The ITF’s headquarters were in Amsterdam during the
1930s. In anticipation of war, most ITF staff relocated to
London in August 1939. One, however, Arie Treurniet,
volunteered to stay behind in charge of the Amsterdam
office. He was there when the Nazis invaded the
Netherlands a year later, was arrested shortly
afterwards and spent over two years in Buchenwald
concentration camp.
