Imminent cholera outbreak looms in
northeast Nigeria, NRC warns

N ORWEGIAN
Refugee Council,
NRC, has raised the alarm
over the overcrowded
displacement camps
coupled with a lack of basic
sanitation facilities and
hygiene in the North East
of the country, warning that
the condition will cause
another cholera outbreak if
action is not taken now to
prevent it.
It could be recalled that
in 2018, 10,000 cases of
cholera were recorded
with more than 175
registered deaths.
Statistics from the
Nigerian Centre for
Disease Control, NCDC,
weekly epidemiological
report for week 10 in the
month of March 2019,
between weeks 1 and 10,
2019, a total of 323
suspected cholera cases
with four laboratory
confirmed and 19 deaths
from 14 LGAs in seven
states were reported
compared with 1,476
suspected cases and 33
deaths from 50 LGAs in 13
States during the same
period in 2018.
In a statement, NRC's
Country Director for
Nigeria, Eric Batonon
warned: "If the camps are
not decongested and
sanitation facilities
improved, cholera will
inevitably return, and
vulnerable displaced
people will bear the brunt
of the epidemic again."
Over the last decade,
northeast Nigeria has been
affected by cholera on a
yearly basis. Following a
rise of violence in late 2018
forcing over 100,000
people to flee,
displacement camps and
sites are overcrowded. This
has resulted in a
deterioration of the living
conditions and a lack of
sanitation facilities. For
instance, 466 people are

of the displacement camps
in the state of Borno,
according to the
Humanitarian Office for
the Coordination of
Humanitarian Affairs,
OCHA.
This is nine times above
the agreed humanitarian
standards, which is set at
50 people per latrine in
emergency situations. As a
result of lack of sanitation,
people choose to defecate
in the open, exacerbating
an already vulnerable
situation and increasing
the likelihood of the spread
of disease.
Batonon said: “We are
calling for Nigerian
authorities to provide
additional land to develop
decongestion plans and to
enable the construction of
new water and sanitation
facilities.
“At the same time, the
international community
should provide the
necessary funding to
respond quickly and
efficiently so we can end the
cycle of yearly cholera
outbreaks in the region."
US agency endorses
LUTH cancer centre

Hospital LUTH for
putting in place
comprehensive cancer
treatment centre in
Lagos.
Speaking during a
courtesy visit, Acting
Director of the Agency,
Thomas Hardy said that
the quality of equipment
and infrastructure at the
centre gladding his heart.
“Looking around the
centre, am very pleased
with the structure and
equipment in particular.
They are of a quality
standard that meets up
with a globally acceptable
standard. I’m very
confident that the centre
will impact positively on
the quality of care provide
to Nigerians.
“There was a time in
this country that the
whole functioning
radiotherapy machine
was not up to three. But
to see LUTH alone
having three high
standard radiotherapy
machines gives me joy.”
Hardy, however,
NAFDAC destroys N2.8bn unwholesome products

NATIONAL Agency
for Food and Drugs
Administration and
Control, NAFDAC,
yesterday destroyed
expired, substandard and
falsified medical products
worth over 2.8 billion.
Speaking during the
exercise, NAFDAC
Director General, Professor
Mojisola Adeyeye said that
the products been
destroyed were seized by
the Agency from
manufacturers, importers,
distributors and expired
products voluntarily
handed over to the Agency
by compliant companies,
Non-Governmental
Organizations (NGOs) and
Trade Unions.
"The estimated street value
of the products scheduled
for destruction today is N2,
675,896,538.20). While the
street value of the banned
Tramadol
is
N283,500,000.00.
She explained that the
Agency has prosecuted
some importers who did
not mean well for the
country.
"In the first quarter of 2019,
Mr. Luke Mbah, has been
arraigned at the Federal
High Court, Lagos for
smuggling banned and
fake 488 cartons of Barcadin
with Codeine (cough
syrup), Fake 207 cartons of
Afrodiac Diclofenac
Potassium tablets among
others.
"One Mr. Madubuike
Chukwunonye who
allegedly sold Cough
Syrup with Codeine to a
BBC undercover agent in
April, 2018 was arraigned
at the Federal High Court,
Lagos. Another Mr.
Ebenezer Arimiwem, was
convicted of the
manufacture, distribution,
packaging, labelling and
processing of different
brands of Counterfeit
Cosmetic Products and was
sentenced to fifteen months
in prison without an option
pleaded that they will do
everything with their
reach to ensure that good
initiative of such continues
in the hospital.
While conducting the
delegate round the centre,
the Chief Medical
Director, LUTH, Prof.
Chris Bode said the aim
was to establish a worldclass
cancer treatment
Centre to reduce medical
tourism.
“This centre is not just a
pride of Nigeria but the
whole West Africa. We will
guarantee optimal service
to everybody who comes
here and our service will
be cheaper than anything
you can get anywhere in
Nigeria or other parts of
the world.
“It is a group of investor
that invest $11 million to
establish this centre, the
way forward is for us to
render good service
consistently for the next
10 years and beyond so
that investor will make
their money back.
Bode said the project
came with a written 10
years maintenance
services and the
equipment, for now, will
work at least for 10 years
trouble free and when it
breaks, it would be
speedily fixed by virtue of
maintenance agreement.
