Albatros
With strong footholds in Kangerlussuaq and Ilulissat, we
can provide your guests with a seamless experience of
the epitome of Greenland.
Three decades ago, we were one of the first travel
operators to venture into the Arctic wilderness of
Greenland. Today, we have cemented our presence in
the form of accommodation, excursions and restaurants
owned and operated by Albatros Arctic Circle and our
staff, with local expertise and Arctic know-how.
ARCTIC CIRCLE
Greenland is a matchless, unique
place, and we are determined to
show guests from abroad how
incredibly beautiful and untouched
this great Arctic island is.
We cherish the wide, open spaces,
the long, dark winters only
brightened by the sparkling snow,
breathtaking Northern Lights (the
Aurora Borealis), the short - and
surprisingly green- summers lit by
the midnight sun, the seemingly
endless icescapes and the warmth
of the Greenlandic people. Yes, the
list is long and we could go on.
We don’t just know Greenland’s
history, the names of its birds,
wildlife and its nature. We breathe
the crisp, Arctic air and feel it
coursing through our veins.
We treasure the warmth and culture
of its people, its rich history and
beauty.
Our passion for Greenland is all
encompassing and reflected in
everything we do. We have had
offices In Greenland for decades.
Our staff in Kangerlussuaq and
Ilulissat has lived there for years,
even decades, and many of them
are born and raised there.
We look forward to sharing our
love and admiration for this
magnificent country with you
and your guests. Unforgettable
experiences await!
encounter not many have the chance to have. This
location is an extraordinary place, covered by
waterfalls, lakes, crystal-blue meltwater streams
EXPLORE
ANOTHER WORLD
- Venture deep into a white wonderland
The opportunity to simply set foot on the
Greenland’s Ice Sheet is a great experience,
but to walk amid its white emptiness on a mini
expedition is truly an unbeatable adventure.
In this exciting full-day excursion, we will have
8 hours to explore the Greenland Ice Sheet.
Few people venture onto the Ice Sheet, yet so
much awaits only a little deeper within, where a
great ice landscape unfolds! On this excursion,
we will wander among the hills and valleys, and
eventually find ourselves surrounded by crystal
blue streams, rivers, waterfalls and lakes - all
formed by melt water from the ice.
Equipped with crampons and hiking poles,
walking across the ice sheet is still a bit more
challenging than trekking across hilly terrain,
but you will manage the technique after some
instruction from our guides. All levels of
experience are welcome to join. With 500
meters of ancient ice compacted beneath our
feet, we will wander through the Arctic Desert
in pursuit of the ideal spot to enjoy lunch.
Here, the drinking water comes directly from
the glacial lake!
During our drive to and from the Greenland
Ice Sheet, we will pass through serene Arctic
landscapes, which are home to reindeer, musk
oxen and many varied species of Arctic birds and
plant life.
Be sure to bring adequate gear for the hike,
including sunglasses, sunscreen, a warm jacket
and hiking boots.
THE EDGE OF
GREENLAND’S ICE
SHEET
Very few places in Greenland offer such a
phenomenal sensation and view of the
Greenland Ice Sheet as Point 660, located
at the Ice Sheet’s edge.
The Greenland Ice Sheet is a fantastic natural
formation developed over millions of years as
layers of compacted snow and ice, gasses,
dust and water accumulated. Although the
landscape appears to be a frozen mass that
has stood unchanged for eons, the Ice Sheet is
active just like a living, breathing, evolving
organism.
In fact, with an average thickness of 2- to
3-kilometers (1.25-1.75 miles), the immense
weight continues to push the ice outward
toward the sea, which is why this so-called inland
ice sheet can also be seen along much
of Greenland’s coast.
As the excursion to Point 660 begins, our
4WD-vehicle or coach will pass Kangerlussuaq’s
makeshift golf course, a miniature forest of
conifers and a roughly 400-meter high
cone-shaped rock called Sugarloaf.
As Kangerlussuaq fades in the distance, we
enter a stunning landscape of mountains,
plains and semi-desert valleys. The route to
the Greenland Ice Sheet winds along the
beautiful valley of Sandflugtsdal and its
equally long, milky turquoise meltwater river.
The terrain alternates between fertile moor
and dense scrub with sandy dunes and barren
mountain slopes. By Greenlandic standards,
this landscape is mild, with rich flora and
speckled with lakes, yet relatively arid.
A few kilometers from the Ice Sheet’s outer
periphery lies the Russel Glacier, an impressive
sight with vertical ice walls rising as high as 60
meters.
Our final destination, Point 660, is nearby
at the edge of the Greenland Ice Sheet. Its
towering backdrop of glacial foothills stretches
from North to South as far as the eye can see,
and is quite a remarkable sight to behold.
You will have the opportunity to explore the
surrounding area on foot and breathe in the
Ice Sheet’s one-of-a-kind atmosphere.
After an hour on the ice, we will have time
to warm-up on the bus as we drive through
Greenland’s beautiful tundra landscape during
our return to Kangerlussuaq. There is a good
chance we will spot reindeer, musk oxen and,
depending on the season, many species of
birds and flowers.
AN UNFORGETTABLE
ICE CAMPING AND
TREKKING ADVENTURE
ONLY TWO ICE SHEETS EXIST IN THE WORLD,
NAMELY IN ANTARCTICA AND IN GREENLAND,
WHERE THE SETTLEMENT OF KANGERLUSSUAQ IS
FORTUNATE TO ENJOY A DISTINGUISHING FEATURE:
IT IS THE ONLY PLACE IN GREENLAND WHERE
YOU CAN LITERALLY DRIVE TO THE GREENLAND
ICE SHEET, AND IT IS SITUATED ONLY 25 KM FROM
KANGERLUSSUAQ! FROM ALL OTHER LOCATIONS IN
GREENLAND, YOU MUST HIKE, SAIL OR FLY.
This mini-expedition offered both Summer and
Winter, begins in our 4WD all-terrain vehicle, which
features large panoramic windows, making it easy to
enjoy
the changing landscape along the way. We will drive
approximately one hour to our destination, Point 660,
and hold an important briefing on safety and the
forthcoming activities.
Following the leadership of our experienced guide, we
will venture onto the Greenland Ice Sheet and walk in
the footsteps of legendary explorers such as Fridtjof
Nansen.
Upon reaching our destination, our first priority will
be setting up camp. With our night’s accommodations
in order, it is time to relax with a warm beverage
and enjoy the total silence that prevails only a few
kilometers into the ice sheet. Isolated from modern
electrical appliances and the buzzing of city lights,
this is an extraordinary opportunity to witness the
Northern Lights (Aurora Borealis) amid the Winter’s
darkness.
Dinner is warm, wholesome and simple, consisting
of freeze-dried food that is easy to carry on such an
expedition. In an environment where no other food
sources are available, this humble meal leaves us
feeling happy and at ease.
Following an adventurous night spent snuggled in our
warm sleeping bags and an energy-packed breakfast,
it is time to get going on our hike.
Following a route across seemingly eternal fields of
ice, we set our sights on Russell Glacier. We must
proceed with thoughtfulness, heeding any potential
ice fissures. Throughout the duration of this
expedition, we will maintain a safe distance from
danger and plot a route across secure terrain.
Crampons and trekking poles will provide each
guest with extra stability. Ropes will not be used.
Depending on the weather conditions, we will
enjoy our packed lunch while in route or back at
base camp. As our adventure concludes, we will
break camp, packing up our goods and leaving only
footprints behind. We will return to civilization,
feeling enriched and awakened by our winter
Don’t miss this exciting opportunity to explore the stunning
nature and wildlife around Kangerlussuaq.
EXPLORE
GREENLAND’S
BACKCOUNTRY
With a fjord on one side and the massive
Greenland Ice Sheet bordering the
other, Kangerlussuaq is surprisingly one
of the most ice-free tracks of land in all
of Greenland. Its location is a paradise for
both reindeer and musk oxen, who thrive in
this environment due to the relatively mild,
stable and dry climate and the abundance
of food.
The trip takes place on one of our tough,
off-road 4WD coaches, which are outfitted
to accommodate transport in the Arctic’s
Summer and Winter terrain. We will follow
a route through the beautiful tundra
landscape, while the guide tells us about
the surrounding flora and fauna.
With a bit of luck, we will observe musk
oxen roaming freely in their natural habitat
around Kangerlussuaq and learn about
these incredible creatures. Musk oxen can
be aggressive and charge without warning,
so we are unable to confirm how closely we
can observe their behavior. However, the
guide will always bring a pair of binoculars,
ensuring you have a chance to watch these
impressive animals.
We will also be on the lookout for other
wildlife in the area, such as reindeer, and
learn about the tundra’s vegetation and
flowering plants, including the dense
scrub that grows on the south-facing
rocky slopes and the wooded thickets of
Arctic willow that thrive along the rivers
and streams.
Geologically-speaking, Kangerlussuaq’s
history dates back 2.8 – 2.7 billion years,
and at least once, the area has been
completely frozen over in ice from
Kangerlussuaq to the coastal town of
Sisimiut. This is evidenced by the area’s
rigid, moraine landscapes and generally
lower geological reliefs, in comparison to
the geological mass that lies to the north.
In other words, the geological structure of
Kangerlussuaq’s mountain landscapes has
been eroded by ice through the ages.
Today, the height of the largest rounded
hills in the area does not exceed 700 meters.
On this excursion, we often drive up to
the American-named mountain of Tacan.
It is a mountain south of Kangerlussuaq
that offers fantastic panoramic views of
the valleys, rivers, Kangerlussuaq and
even parts of the Greenland Ice Sheet.
We will take a few breaks during the
excursion, so you can stretch your legs
while enjoying the peacefulness, the fresh
air and views of the distant horizon.
DOG SLEDDING
TOUR
- 2 or 4 hours
DURATION: 2 OR 4 HOURS
SEASON: JANUARY TO APRIL
Spending any time above the Arctic Circle during the
winter sledding months certainly calls for a classic dog
sledding experience.
Not only will you gain new respect for the Greenlandic
sled dog’s keen abilities and innate environmental
awareness, but you will also better understand the
importance of sled dogs to man’s survival and everyday
life north of the Arctic Circle. It is truly a heartwarming
cultural experience.
The sled dog is a working animal and does not share
much in common with a typical family pet. It enjoys an
iconic status in Greenland, and fulfills a very important
role in the Greenlandic way of life. Due to Greenland’s
isolated location and Greenlanders keen awareness of
the sled dog’s unique abilities, breeders have placed
great importance on maintaining the breed’s purity and
imposed strict regulations to prevent crossbreeding.
These efforts have ensured the Greenlandic sled dog
is one of the world’s most pure breeds.
Here in Kangerlussuaq, the fjord offers the opportunity
for a sledding excursion across the frozen, flat ice, which
can provide a more pleasant and smoother ride than
when driving across hilly terrain.
To ensure you are comfortably warm during the drive, we
provide the same type of outerwear and footwear that
actually many drivers prefer, including warm fur clothing
and good boots with appropriate insulation that can
withstand the biting cold temperatures and wind.
The sled team will lead you over the fjord to enjoy the
magnificent nature, as well as the love these dogs have
for pulling the sled across the frozen terrain. Sled dogs
work as a team with a clear hierarchy, where the driver is
head of the pack. To begin, the driver will lead the team
halfway, and then provide a lesson on how to control and
care for the dogs. Before the excursion is over, you will
have a chance to drive the sled and lead the team!
Dog sledding is a meaningful part of Greenlandic Culture and
is a traditional, age-old form of transportation that has been
used by the Inuit for centuries when the landscape becomes
otherwise impassable beneath blankets of snow and ice.
The trip between Kangerlussuaq and Sisimiut offers a true
expedition experience, allowing you to test your limits in a
controlled environment and truly begin to grasp Greenland’s
enormity. During the 3-day journey, you will mostly overnight
in remote hunting cabins, but some time will be spent in a
tent.
INFORMATION
When booking a dog sledding
tour, the number of guests
permitted on the sled per
excursion is two. The minimum
age for participation is 10.
Pricing varies depending on
the number of guests who will
be joining the excursion.
Together with the sled driver on this expedition, you will
experience Greenland’s harsh and captivating environment,
where people, animal and nature work harmoniously. You will
become an important part of the team and will be involved
with preparing food, packing the sled and feeding the dogs.
The trip can be quite challenging at times and guests should
be in good health and condition. Due to the rough and
unpredictable terrain, including ascents and descents, we do
not recommend this tour for people who have back problems.
Please note that it is obligatory to rent polar clothing
(seal skin or down) and boots, unless you have proper
polar equipment of your own. In our experience, very few
participants bring adequate equipment to ensure their safety
and comfort while on the expedition. Our staff will determine
whether you have proper clothes for this expedition.
NORTHERN
LIGHTS
- The best in the world !
DEPARTURE: 3 HOURS
SEASON: SEPTEMBER TO APRIL
During the frozen winter months, Greenlandic fjord fishermen return to the age-old techniques
developed centuries ago by their Inuit ancestors. On this ice fishing excursion, you too can try your
hand at these traditional fishing methods and learn how locals have adapted to life in the Arctic
winter.
Every winter when Kangerlussuaq Fjord, known in English as ”the Big Fjord”, freezes, sailors return
to shore as their boats are pulled from the unnavigable waters. These seemingly lifeless waters
are a sure signal that winter has taken hold! However, even in these frigid temperatures, life buzzes
both above and below the surface with local residents and visitors enjoying popular winter activities,
such as sledding, snowmobiling and ice fishing.
On our ice fishing excursion, we will drive about 13 km (8 mi) from Kangerlussuaq, and then, venture
onto the frozen fjord in search of our perfect fishing spot.
Arriving well-prepared with our ice drill, we will bore our way through the thick surface and drop
our hooked fishing line in hopes of great catch. There are usually many fish, primarily cod bites, but
it is important to remain both patient and vigilant, giving the line a gentle pull once in a while.
While you are testing your luck at ice fishing, the excursion guide will serve up hot drinks along with
a fishing story or two.
The weather is typically calm, but the conditions are cold, so it is necessary to outfit yourself with
the appropriate outwear to fully enjoy the nature, fresh polar air and calm environment.
INFORMATION
Paddle in a kayak and witness up close the overwhelming
beauty of icebergs of the Iulissat’s Icefjords.
Kayaking in Ilulissat is a unique activity for two reasons. The
first one is very obvious, kayaking is possibly the best way
to experience the Ilulissat Icefjord (UNESCO World Heritage
Site). Being at the sea level, without any sound and just
using your own body to sail among icebergs, makes it very
special.
The duration of our activities
includes the time to gear-up /
dress-up, safety briefings and
transfers to departure points.
The time spent in the water
paddling is 2 hours.
The second one, perhaps not that known among people
visiting us, is that 4,000 years ago, people already used
“qajaat” (traditional kayaks) for travelling and hunting in
Greenland and most of the Inuit region.
Thanks to our experienced and certified kayaking guides,
modern expedition equipment and safety protocols, we
make it possible for you to kayak among icebergs, even if
you have never been kayaking before. Besides, they will
introduce you to the fascinating world of the original kayak
“qajaq”, invented in Greenland and made out of drifting
wood and animal skin.
• Equipment: snowmobile,
helmet, extra warm jacket and
pants, mittens, boots
• Hot drinks and snacks
DIFFICULTY LEVEL
• 3 out of 5
The snowmobile has become a very frequent form of
transport in Arctic countries, because it adapts to a
wide variety of terrains and allows quick access to the
remotest places.
The backcountry of Ilulissat offers great landscapes to
be discovered. Our local guides and modern
snowmobiles are a great way to explore snowy valleys
and mountains, frozen lakes, fjords and the sea ice.
Our guide will choose the route depending on snow,
ice and weather conditions. One choice will be visiting
the authentic settlement of Oqaatsut 20 km north from
Ilulissat where 37 Inuit live all year round.
The other choice is a route that has an unbeatable
scenery. We will go up the mountains, see dogsleds
doing their route to ice-fish in the Icefiord, and reach
a series of viewpoints of Ilulissat, Disko Bay and the Ice
Cap. In both routes we will stop to have some hot drinks
and biscuits.
INFOMATION
This tour is on a shared basis with
a driver and guest per snowmobile.
All participants driving must have a
valid driving license, either for car
or motorcycle.
The duration of our activities includes
the time to gear-up/ dressup,
safety briefings and transfers to
departure points.
From mid-April, the daylight is
longer, so our tours will be during
the sunset and not when the night
is dark.
No previous experience is required. We provide all the
equipment and our experienced guide will teach how to
drive the snowmobile.
AUTHENTIC
SETTLEMENT
EXPERIENCE
Establish a connection with the Inuit culture
and the Arctic environment.
DURATION: 3 DAYS
SEASON: FEBRUARY TO APRIL
This is a journey to the heart of Greenland, where
winter is cold but the hearts of people are warm.
Riding a snowmobile to the settlement, walking over
the sea ice to see northern lights, eating local food,
meeting and spending time with the local families
of the settlement… And the highlight of the trip, a
dogsled journey with a local from the settlement
and his dogs.
The snowmobile has become a very frequent mean
of transport in Arctic countries, because it adapts
to a wide variety of terrains and allows quick access
to the remotest places. This is why we are using this
mean of transport to travel from Ilulissat to the
settlement of Oqaatsut. The scenery of this journey
is beautiful and varied, with snowy valleys and
mountains, small huts of hunters, lakes with black
ice and a big bay that freezes over with icebergs
stuck in the midst of the sea ice.
In Oqaatsut you will be accommodated in a local
house that has been converted into a B&B, with
private rooms for 1 or 2 people and a big living room
where we will eat breakfast and enjoy spare time,
with views of the frozen sea and the mountains in
the back. The meals will be cooked by local families
with local ingredients and our guide will be your
interpreter to talk with them in Greenlandic.
One of the night activities will be walking from the
settlement over the frozen sea, to find the best spot
to see our shades under the full moon or the natural
phenomena of the Northern Lights. The other night
activity will be indoors, a warm evening with locals.
The second day, our full day of in the settlement, we
will do something unique: dogsledding. A local musher
will take you with his dogs to do an unforgettable
journey through the untouched surroundings
of Oqaatsut.
Travel back in time and get away from everything
you know. Far away from your everyday lifestyle,
discover a new, real world where nature is the
one setting the pace.
The last day is when we depart from Oqaatsut,
saying goodbye to these cold and beautiful surroundings
and its warm and welcoming inhabitants.
We will ride back with our snowmobiles to Ilulissat,
a journey with great scenery, ideal as a farewell for
these three authentic days in the settlement.
The duration of our activities includes
the time to gear-up / dressup,
safety briefings and transfers to
departure points.
Our day starts with a safety briefing before we gear
up. When we are all set, we will start our way to a
small hunter’s hut by snowmobile. The route takes
around an hour and a half, where we will follow the
dogsled way. This same way is used by fishermen from
Ilulissat to go fishing to the frozen fjord of Sikuiuitsoq
(in Greenlandic: place that always has ice). Along the
way we will stop in some viewpoints to see impressive
panoramic views of the Ilulissat Icefiord and the ice
cap.
In the hunter´s hut we will leave the snowmobiles, put
our snowshoes on and continue walking inside the
UNESCO area (where snowmobiles are not allowed).
It is time to start our adventure over the frozen sea
and the small mountain next to the hut. The guide will
choose the best itinerary according the location’s,
safety and physical condition of the group. This
snowshoe hike will take around 1 hour.
After the hike we will stop for lunch. Then we will ride
our snowmobiles back to Ilulissat, following the same
way we came.
the Arctic winter. This unique natural phenomenon
pushes out 20 million tons of ice every day, in form
of gigantic icebergs that can rise up to 100 meters
above the sea level. Take this unique opportunity
and join our guided hike with snowshoes to explore
snow-covered tundra and snowcapped
mountain landscapes.
We scout for musk oxen and go dogsledding across the
sparkling, silent winter backdrop, and when darkness falls,
we hope to see the northern lights dance across the starry
sky.
The wavering, green band of Northern Lights is truly an
unforgettable sight. The weather in this time of year is
often stable and clear, and just before the spring equinox,
the northern lights shine brightest.
We are in the perfect setting to experience the enigmatic
phenomenon. During this adventure, we will be sampling
local specialties and drinks.
