Nothing against Nate Horner, but Kenney and his insiders have manipulated the United Conservative Party (UCP) party to clearly sideline former Wildrose party members. Released emails between the Kenney and Jeff Callaway’s UCP leadership campaigns and audio recordings from the Callaway insider club are telling. Kenney and Callaway concocted a scheme to ensure former Wildrose Leader, Brian Jean could not win the leadership of the UCP. “ Wrong answer Kenny, it’s your personal responsibility if you choose to help your mom, not our tax dollars. It’s clear Callaway went into the leadership race to criticize and attack Jean, then as pre-arranged with Kenney operatives, drop out of the race and throw his support behind Kenney when enough damage had been inflicted on Jean. Now Callaway, his wife and other closely connected people have gone to court to stop the investigation into their possible donation violations. Brian Jean is honourable and honest—a conservative with principles who was defeated by the backroom political maneuvering of the Kenney/Calloway team. It’s becoming obvious Alberta has its own dirty little ‘House of Cards’ script of cynical politics. Kenney is not a conservative. He’s a libertarian, neo-liberal and a sadopopulist, whose policies are designed to help the richest of the rich, hurt the “ MAIL BAG most vulnerable in society and gain support through divisive politics. The Callaway/Kenney campaigns lied about Jean’s Christian values, his position on certain pieces of legislation and accused him of cheating during the leadership race. Now being challenged with hard facts, Kenney is using the Trump standard for sleazy politics—lie, deny and deflect. Kenney has a history of shadiness, including cheating the taxpayer of $17,000 between 2012 and 2016 when he claimed as his primary residence the basement of his mother’s bungalow in a Calgary retirement community. Before that he claimed a room in his parent’s house. The rules are clear; a primary residence is where the member spends weekends and most of his time when the House is not sitting. The evidence collected against Kenney was the low number of airline tickets purchased to and from Calgary. When challenged, Kenney used Trumpian techniques—attack the lawyer who had the facts and play the good son card, “I was just helping my mom”. Wrong answer Kenney. It is your personal responsibility if you choose to help your mom, not our tax dollars. Kenney is Alberta’s very own Mike Duffy. Remember, Mike, the man who smelled up the Conservative Party to high heaven when caught claiming his cabin on P.E.I. as his principal residence. Breaking election donation rules wasn’t beyond Kenney either. In 2016 while claiming Alberta as his primary residence, he donated to the Ontario Conservatives. Kenney has been in politics far too long to not know that a non-resident donating to political campaigns is illegal. Surely personal character and integrity should matter when choosing a leader. If it were not for the Kenney/Calloway attack on the democratic process during the election of the leader of the UCP, today our choice could have been between four honourable politicians, Brian Jean, Rachel Notley, Stephen Mandel and David Khan, and our decision would have been based on policy platforms, rather than character. So far so good! Now we find that other than axing the tax, he really doesn’t disagree that much with Notley’s “Climate Change Plan.” “ The caucus member is not given the option to voice the concerns of their constituents in the legislature or parliament. According to the Globe and Mail, he has stated that he believes in humancaused climate change and will find a different way to decrease carbon emissions. It would appear that he completely disregards the science of real climate scientists, that report their findings based on evidence and not consensus like environmental scientists. For example, the temperature on Mars and the Earth exactly parallel to each other and Mars does not have carbon emissions. Kenney should listen to scientists like Freeman Dyson, who is one of the world’s most important thinkers, and Patrick Moore. He is taking the easy way out and just following the herd. He should be condemning Notley’s entire “ Climate Leadership Plan” Kenney is going along with the “old” Progressive Conservative (PC) system of top-down policy development. This included allowing the PC political establishment to orchestrate dishonest candidate nominating contests like the one in the Drumheller Stettler constituency. This board was totally biased in favour of one candidate and did everything it could to prevent members from voting for another candidate. They also found a questionable excuse to disqualify a third candidate from competing. There have been numerous UCP contests that have been controversial with some candidates being disqualified and others have given preferential treatment to the parties “preferred” candidate was allowed to win. What has been obvious ever since the UCP’s founding meeting is that operatives from the legacy PC party have been purging people from the legacy Wildrose Party. They do not want grassroots ideas and influence in this party. Real democracy is not in their DNA. You only use democracy when it works to your advantage. As has been pointed out in articles and columns from other writers the ‘party system’ has a systemic weakness. The leader decides how everyone in the caucus will vote on almost every issue. ECA REVIEW HANNA/CORONATION/STETTLER, AB ApRIL 4'19 7 Change available at the polls Dear Editor, It is fine to talk on about “property rights”, PrairieView, Mar. 21, 2019, titled, Has happened before, however keep talking about property rights for all Alberta if you are concerned about provincial and government control and regulations. The same regulations apply to all title land in Alberta. As far as the “smear campaign”; it has been brought into reality by Rick Strankman and is totally self-inflicted. His actions, through words from the verbatim exchange between Municipal Affairs Minister Shayne Anderson on April 12, 2016 in a Legislative Committee, are recorded in Hansard of Alberta. Independent members of the legislature do not have that constraint. They can freely represent the concerns of constituents in that public form. What you really have with the party system is a different form of herd mentality. The herd follows the leader. In my opinion, if the UCP had real leadership it would be staying true to the grassroots philosophy established at the founding convention in Red Deer on May 4 - 5, 2018. The delegates there did not visualize that the UCP leadership would Strankman, in my opinion, obviously shows no respect for or acknowledgement that our democratically-elected Special Areas councillors and elected board members even exists, as he presses the Minister with comments and questions. After reading those transcripts, it can be concluded, in my opinion, that MLA Strankman is working against the Special Areas Administration by attempting to undermine it. That undermining of the Special Areas by the MLA, in my opinion, must stop. Furthermore, it is the people of the Special Areas, working with their elected council and board members, who decide how the affairs of the Special Form of dictatorship condone cheating to have candidates elected that were the choice of the party hierarchy rather than members. The grassroots members of the party should have been free to nominate candidates that would represent their interests. It seems to me what we will have now in the UCP is a form of dictatorship that represents the aspirations of the leader rather than party members. For example, getting back to the climate change issue, caucus members would have to support the leader’s position on the issue. An independent MLA would be free to expose the fraud that is currently being perpetrated on humanity. Wouldn’t that be a change! MAIL BAG Governments have diminished property rights Dear Editor, On any given day, we can read news articles and information on bullying and its devastating effects. My personal experience started when I was in grade school. It was quietly excused as the “pecking order”. It was not until I started standing up for myself that things changed. From school yards to politicians, domestic and global, the abuse takes many forms from the obvious to the subtle. Subtle is defined as, “quietly making use of clever direct and indirect methods to achieve something”. Past and present Alberta governments have slowly over time diminished property rights. Areas are handled. Similarly, I do not meddle in the affairs of Paintearth or Stettler County affairs because I don’t live there. Conversely, I would politely ask people not to meddle in Special Areas affairs if they do not live here. If an MLA cannot and will not work with and support all municipal forms of government that the present and acceptable to the people of that Riding, then that non-supportive MLA will not be a satisfactory representative for the Riding. This is our situation in Stettler-Drumheller. We need a change. The change is available at the election polls. Doug Fawcett Consort, Ab. So with lots of anticipation and a little desperation, large numbers of Canadians and people from around the world have made Alberta home. In fact, Alberta’s population grew much faster than Canada’s total population from 2001 to 2016. More than a million people decided to become Albertans. That is more people than the total populations of either New Brunswick, Prince Edward Island, Nova Scotia or Newfoundland, or even a couple of those provinces combined. Wow! Put another way, Canada, without Alberta, grew by 11 per cent while Alberta grew three times faster at 33 per cent. And so again Alberta claims the title of the “last best west ” as it had in the early 1900s. Why? Back then it was ‘free’ farmland. Not really free, one still had to risk and work for it. But today it is worthwhile work. If you can’t find that work elsewhere, Alberta has been the place to be most of the time. But today, regular, hardworking Albertans are being punished for their initiative through so-called transfer payments worth hundreds of billions of dollars. And look, the term ‘infrastructure deficit’, which some think was caused by paying down Albertans’ debt, is just a convenient way to blame and bully Albertans. Remember, that while the Canadian government was over-taxing Albertans, we Albertans were absorbing large numbers of newcomers and still paying off our public debt. And to this end, every Canadian government since Alberta’s creation in 1905 has ‘exported’ political divisions like conservative, liberal, and NDP parties. From the very start their aim has been to divide and conquer Albertans. We can solve this by realizing that we are now Albertans and the Canadians we left behind have only ever had their very own interests at heart no matter how much they wrap themselves in a Canadian flag. A flag that now barely covers our attractive Albertan arses. Our first Alberta premier, Alexander Rutherford, once said, much to the chagrin of his Canadian liberal party bosses, “I appeal to you not as liberals or conservatives, but as Albertans. The province must stand before the party.” But today, for Albertans to survive and thrive, Alberta must always stand before Canada. Allow me to get on my soapbox for a minute or two to address our coming election. Once Alberta voters get past the fear mongering from the NDP, we will have a conservative government. I personally do not want a return to total dominance by one party. This is what got us to where we are today. We need conservative independent thinkers in our legislature to hold government accountable. The challenge to Jason Kenney, leader of the United Conservative Party (UCP), is this: If he and the UCP party want to truly be global leaders in respecting more letters on page 22 and 23 Caring for you & your Smile! This gives government absolute authority regarding your property rights!
