Ecuador-born artist Mariana del Castillo uses found
objects to construct and explore stories relating to cultural
dislocation through migration.
Perceived indifference tells the story of the recent demolition of her
childhood home in Ecuador. del Castillo addresses questions around
her own identity by reconnecting with her personal sense of loss
which overtime, she has chosen to abandon.
del Castillo’s installation is a portrait of a woman who’s conflict
comes from experiencing a sense of loss, alienation and isolation
caused by the dislocation of migrating from her birth country to an
unknown place. Found objects become motifs to explore her story
and suggest a sense of memory and loss created by places she
once inhabited. Using intricate sewing skills handed down to her by
the women in her family de Castillo meticulously wraps and binds
delicate objects to illustrate her feelings of fragility which she holds
under her skin.
She addresses issues of identity in relation to profound childhood
memories of place and how these memories are reconstructed
within our own consciousness. Through her investigations, based
on the experiences of returning to Ecuador, del Castillo concludes
that individuals have more than one identity: one that is based on
a sense of unity and place which comes from belonging to a shared
culture; and one that is based on identification and histories that are
passed down.
When individuals migrate they do not leave their beliefs, customs,
skills or idioms behind, no matter what the circumstances of their
migration. In this installation the ordinary becomes magical,
nostalgic and quirky, while also being dramatic and unsettling, and
what appear to be simple, familiar shapes and motifs aren’t always
what they seem.
