Vanguard IWD: Women harp on
collaboration, mentoring and inclusion in
politics
*Erefa *Uju *Helen Fausat
*Foluke
the political gaps.
We need to take this issue to the grassroots—Uju
Uzo-Ojinnaka, CEO, TOFA,
Traders of Africa
Interesting! good narrative! Awesome
women with divergent views. I am looking
forward to us implementing some, if
not all that we have enumerated. I am
to be part of the people who are saddled
with the responsibility of redirecting the
future of Nigeria. We need to take this
issue to the grassroots and the enlightenment
must begin in earnest.
Women are not magnanimous
politically—Mrs. Helen
Ominiabohs, representing former
First Lady, Lagos State, Dame
Abimbola Fashola.
I always say if you want to go to
Ibadan and you enter a bus going to
Port Harcourt, there is no amount of
fasting that will get you to Ibadan. So it
is important we begin to hold discussions,
serious ones. My vision for
Nigeria is the opposite of where we are
now. We can take this country to the
standard of the countries we visit on
vacations.
Take the bull by the horn—- Foluke
Adebisi, Head HR, Wartsila marine and
Power Services Nig. Ltd.
The opportunities should be for everybody
and women should take the bull
by the horn. They should not be treated
as second class citizens. They should
be competent and bold to take concerted
decisions capable of moving the
nation forward.
Women suffer if they fail to
change the narrative— Fausat
Ibrahim
Women need to stand up to their responsibilities.
We do not need to sit and
fold our hands. If we do not do something,
nobody will do anything for us.
We will suffer if we fail to change the
narrative and do the needful to make
Nigeria work again.
Every woman should register under
a particular political party—Faoziah
Shade Gamu, Lecturer/Chartered
Estate Surveyor and
Valuer, University og Lagos
We need to act as women and own
our world. Every woman should reg-
Faoziah
ister under a particular political party
to make a statement. Men are not running
this country very well and that is
why I said God made this country to be
the woman’s affair. We need everybody’s
contribution to move this country
forward.
We have to continuously expand
our mind—Angela Okafor Chika,
MD, Parkview Astoria Hotel, PAH
We have to continuosly seek for
ways to expand our minds. When
you put a woman to task, naturally,
she does better than the man. May
be that is how we are wired.
Nestle to step up stakeholder engagement towards
building sustainability
The recent refurbishment of two
primary schools by Nestle Nigeria
in its Ogun operational base is only
part of a larger strategy to build an
ecosystem around its businesses.
Disclosing this to the media recently,
MD/CEO of Nestlé Nigeria Mauricio
Alarcon said the organization believes
that the long term success of its business
is dependent on nurturing thriving
communities closest to its operations.
“We therefore work with our partners to
enhance living conditions in the
localities where most of our staff,
suppliers and host communities reside.
This is one of the ways we ensure that
everyone connected to our business
derives a benefit. We call this Creating
Shared Value.”
The recent handover of the refurbished
facilities in two schools close to the
company’s Abaji and Flowergate
factories underlines its efforts towards
impacting its factory communities
positively. The two schools, LEA
Primary School Manderegi and NUD
Primary School, Owode Egba are part
of Nestlé for Healthier Kids (N4HK), a
school-based nutrition education
initiative supported by the Federal
Ministry of Health and the Federal
Ministry of Education. N4HK achieves
its objectives by teaching and
promoting healthy nutrition, healthy
hydration, hygiene and an active
lifestyle. The training and coaching is
implemented in collaboration with State
Universal Basic Education Board
(UBEB) in Ogun State and Universal
Basic Education Board in the Federal
Capital Territory (FCT). The program is
reaching over 17,000 children and 350
teachers in 30 primary schools. “It would
be difficult for children to imbibe healthy
nutrition and hygiene practices if the
environment is not conducive for putting
what they learn into practice,” said
Nestlé Nigeria’s Corporate
Communications and Public Affairs
Manager, Mrs Victoria Uwadoka. “It was
therefore important to ensure that the
children and teachers have access to
good classrooms, safe clean water, toilets
and handwashing facilities.” At the
handover ceremony of LEA Primary
School project which includes a
refurbished classroom block, two new
blocks of water system toilets, a fully
equipped playground, a borehole and
two water fetching points in January, the
children and teachers expressed their
delight with the improvement to their
facilities. “Our classrooms used to have
holes in the roof where water leaked in
during classes,” said Onyekachi, a pupil
of LEA Primary School. “We put buckets
under the leaking roof to prevent
flooding. Sometimes we used the water
to wash our hands. We are very happy to
have new toilets and water because,
before we had to go to the bush to ease
ourselves. We are very, very happy with
Nestlé. “
The NUD Primary School project, which
includes a refurbished classroom block,
two new water system toilet facilities and
a borehole with water fetching bays as
well as a fully furnished playground, was
commissioned in March. In his welcome
address at the handover ceremony, Mr.
K. I. Keefa, Head Teacher of NUD
Primary school said the project has
contributed immensely to the overall
development of education in Obafemi
Owode Local Government Area as the
school has been transformed into a
standard and model primary school in
the community. He added that the
project has also provided a befitting and
conducive learning environment for the
teachers and learners. The Executive
Chairman, Ogun SUBEB, Alhaji
Olatunde Okewole urged the
beneficiaries of the projects to appreciate
Nestlé Nigeria’s laudable gesture by
utilizing the facilities judiciously and
ensure that they are secured and
preserved for continuous use. Towards
the ecosystem objective, other initiatives
include the endowment of a prize by
Nestle Nigeria, with the Diamond
Awards for Media Excellence, DAME,
awards; as well as collaboration with the
Lagos Business School for training
Nutrition writers.
