Palm Beach Scopus Award Gala<br />

and Annual Leadership<br />

Education Forum<br />

<strong>AFHU</strong>’S Southeast Region hosted its Palm Beach<br />

Scopus Award Gala on Sunday, January 19, 2019, at The<br />

Breakers in Palm Beach, FL. <strong>AFHU</strong> paid tribute to this<br />

year’s Scopus Award recipients, Marjorie and Robert<br />

Emden, for their commitment to humanitarianism<br />

and their dedication to the continued growth of the<br />

Hebrew University of Jerusalem. Guests were treated<br />

to a star-studded performance by Tony Award winner,<br />

LaChanze, from The Color Purple and Summer: The<br />

Donna Summer Musical on Broadway.<br />

The Israel-Asia<br />

Connection<br />

<strong>AFHU</strong>’s Southeast Region was proud<br />

to host The Israel-Asia Connection on<br />

October 11, 2018, welcoming Eli Gil,<br />

Consul and Head of Administration for the<br />

Consulate General of Israel in Miami, and<br />

Hebrew University Student Ambassador<br />

Shirley Lukin. Over 50 people attended<br />

the event, hosted by Dr. Myles Krieger<br />

and Yaffa Reznik.<br />

The following day, <strong>AFHU</strong> hosted the Annual Leadership<br />

Education Forum (ALEF). The event showcased<br />

groundbreaking research and practical applications<br />

emerging from the Hebrew University. Professor<br />

Hermona Soreq shared how her revolutionary<br />

research has led to a greater understanding of<br />

neurogenerative diseases like Alzheimer’s and<br />

Parkinson’s, while Professor Shmuel Peleg and his<br />

colleague, Johnmichael O’Hare, showcased BriefCam<br />

video technology and how it transforms hours of<br />

surveillance footage into actionable data. Keynote<br />

speaker Professor Eugene Kandel, CEO of the<br />

Start-Up Nation Central, spoke about the intricacies<br />

of Israel as the Start-Up Nation, and Dr. Yaron<br />

Daniely highlighted the most innovative and exciting<br />

products emerging from HU’s technology transfer<br />

company. Professor Asher Cohen, President of<br />

the Hebrew University, and Ambassador Yossi Gal,<br />

Hebrew University’s Vice President for Advancement<br />

and External Relations, shared news from Jerusalem<br />

and their vision for the future.
