celebration of the resurrection 

Easter Day Sunday and followed 

this year on Thursday 

by Anzac Day commemorations.

celebrations of the St George’s Guilds in

The Guilds are members of the International 

Fellowship of Scouts and Guides and

Trump Climate panel could 

expose huge UN IPCC fraud 

Dear Sir, 

The collective freak out 

over President Donald 

Trump’s proposed Presidential 

Committee on 

Climate Science (PCCS) 

highlights the fact that the 

hysteria surrounding the 

man-made global-warming 

hypothesis is unscientific 

— and that it must be 

re-examined by competent, 

credible experts. 

According to scientists 

and experts, reported in The 

New American, if the science 

on “climate change” 

were truly settled, Democrats, 

tax-funded climate 

alarmists, and the establishment 

media would all be celebrating 

another committee 

to confirm that “conclusion.” 

Instead, the unhinged 

shrieking over Trump’s plan 

to investigate the matter 

strongly suggests something 

very fishy is going on, 

critics argued. Indeed, there 

is a good chance that even 

more fraud could be revealed. 

The hysteria first broke out 

last month. In late February, 

documents emerged showing 

that the White House 

was planning to create a 

committee of federal scientists. 

Their job: re-examine 

widely disputed conclusions 

on climate change by previous 

government bodies. 

Especially problematic 

to the man-made globalwarming 

theorists was the 

prestigious scientist selected 

to lead the commission, 

Princeton University 

Physicist and national 

security advisor Dr William 

Happer. 

Of course, Happer is a 

widely respected scientist 

who happens to disagree 

with the increasingly discredited 

hypothesis that 

man’s emissions of CO2 - a 

fraction of one percent of 

all the greenhouse gases in 

the atmosphere - control the 

climate. 

“CO2 will be good for the 

Earth,” Happer told The 

New American magazine 

at a 2016 climate conference 

in Phoenix Arizona 

that brought together leading 

scientists and experts in 

various fields to expose the 

lies and alarmism.

I secured 12.27 percent 

of first preference votes, 

which equates to 5,496 

votes. Given that my campaign 

actively commenced 

in mid-February, I think this 

is a worthwhile outcome that 

sends a strong message to 

the incumbent. 

But of course none of this 

would have been possible 

without your very kind support, 

whether as a campaign 

assistance, brochure distributor, 

pre-poll volunteer, funds 

donor, booth co-ordinator 

or helper on Election Day. I 

have been deeply touched 

by the willingness and generosity 

of so many people, 

some of whom I had not met 

previously, to volunteer and 

lend support where needed. 

Throughout the campaign, 

I believe we all acted with 

great dignity and integrity, 

and I am very appreciative 

of your collective ethical 

approach. I will be pursuing 

what I regard as some 

false, misleading and illegal 

electoral material that was 

distributed with the NSW 

Electoral Commission in the 

coming weeks so that those 

responsible are identified 

and held to account. 

As I said to many who 

asked early in the campaign 

“What are your chances?”, 

my standard reply was 

that “as Stephen Bradbury 

knows so well, you can never 

win a race unless you’re in 

it”. Given the short campaign 

and preparation time, I think 

the third place ‘bronze’ is a 

pretty good result! 

I will be in separate direct 

contact in the coming week 

with those who generously 

provided financial support.

Free speech of 

censorship? 

Dear Sir, 

I am again appalled by 

the blatantly and unashamedly 

racist content of 

Tony Ikonomou’s letter in 

TWT last week, and by this 

papers continued publishing 

of this sort of nasty 

and divisive rhetoric. 

There is free speech and 

then there is hate and racist 

speech. 

The repeated attacks by 

Ikonomou and his ilk on 

people from India, Asia 

and the Middle East have 

regularly been given column 

inches by TWT and it is time 

to take a stand against this 

type of nasty race based 

prejudice. 

I’d suggest that TWT’s 

readership catchment is 

made up of a very substantial 

percentage of those very 

people being attacked in 

these letters. 

This must be extremely 

hurtful and somewhat confusing 

given these are people, 

who have done nothing 

wrong and are only being 

targeted because of the colour 

of their skin and their 

race of origin. 

Allowing this type of 

speech to appear in print is, 

in my opinion, not in the best 

interest of our community 

and may in fact be seen as 

a green light for more public 

displays of hateful speech 

and actions. Enough is 

enough.

Big celebrations 

at ice rink 

Dear Sir, 

Macquarie ice rink has a 

huge month and I thought 

a great opportunity to 

keep the rink in the community’s 

mind and of 

course a way to support 

some of our upcoming 

events. 

On April 25 we are holding 

our annual fundraising 

gala. All the money raised 

goes to the rinks international 

skaters to help with 

the cost of representing their 

country on the International 

and World Circuit. 

As always Brendan Kerry 

our two time Olympian (and 

my son) is back home to perform, 

along with Chantelle 

Kerry and Andrew Dodds 

who have just returned from 

the World Championships 

and many more local and 

International skaters. 

The local community have 

always been a big supporter 

of this event and it is also 

another opportunity for us to 

thank the community. 

We also have the ice 

hockey starting up again 

this month, and will have the 

Easter Bunny skating at the 

rink on Easter Sunday handing 

out Easter eggs.

Easter celebrates resurrection 

of individuals and communities 

THIS SUNDAY April 21 

some of our local residents, 

whether their religious 

background is 

Christianity or not, will be 

celebrating Easter. 

It is the day on which 

the resurrection of 

Jesus is said to have 

taken place. 

Also, in a bigger 

picture, everyone 

would celebrate all of 

its elements: Easter 

eggs, chocolates or 

fast. 

I am a religious 

minister of a local 

church and I invite 

members of the church, 

neighbours and friends 

to celebrate Easter. 

My interest in Lent and 

Easter always reminds 

me of this season in 

my motherland Korea, 

which is a personal 

element of Easter. 

Where I grew up, the 

celebration of Easter 

fell in the season of 

Spring. 

Weather became 

warmer, mother 

washed all clothes of 

winter and Father rang 

all family members and 

friends for season’s 

greeting. 

Easter was for 

me a rite of spring, 

celebrating the 

changing of seasons. 

Maybe some new 

neighbours around us 

realise that weather in 

Australia, particularly 

this time of the year is 

bit different from where 

they come from. 

I guess there would 

be multiple layers of 

receiving Easter and its 

blended message.

Caring and Catering at the CWA

I first chanced upon the Country Women’s Association (CWA) Rest Centre 

Tea Room in Eastwood (Opposite the railway station, behind Eastwood Library) 

while looking for a clean, cool, quiet place to read and rest, with a nice 

cuppa. 

It was a pleasant surprise that one could 

get Devonshire Tea (two scones with jam and 

cream, washed down with tea or coffee) for 

$5.00, and take home scones at 60 cents each. 

People who enjoy a home-made scone are 

regular customers, as are mothers taking advantage 

of the baby-changing facilities. 

Also for sale are handicrafts, jams, farmfresh 

pure honey, pickles/chutneys - all made/ 

donated by volunteers, and second-hand 

books. With Easter around the corner, Easter 

eggs in cute knitted chicks are on sale at only 

$2 each. 

All proceeds go towards helping families 

in the country, especially in drought/floodstricken 

areas; country children’s education 

grant; and even Ryde Hospital. 

The Tea Room is open Mondays to Fridays 

from 10.00am to 3.00pm; group catering of 

up to 20 people welcome with a week’s notice.

CHANGES TO PARKING ON ROWE STREET 

From Tuesday 30 April 2019, the Eastwood Public School “Kiss & Ride” 

will be relocated to Rowe Street opposite the school, between the fire 

station at Shaftsbury Road and the zebra crossing. 

The new “Kiss & Ride” zone will operate from 8.30 - 9.30am and 

3.00 - 3.30pm on school days. The old “Kiss & Ride” zone along the 

school and fire station frontages on Shaftsbury Road will be removed and 

become NO STOPPING at all times. You will no longer be able to stop on 

Shaftsbury Road. 

There is a zebra crossing at one end of the new “Kiss & Ride”zone with 

traffic lights at the other end, where children can safely cross Rowe 

Street to and from the school. 

How will these changes affect Rowe Street? 

There will be additional cars and children in Rowe Street during drop off 

and pick up times. When driving in Rowe Street, be sure to watch out for 

children crossing at the pedestrian crossing and the traffic lights, and 

cars pulling out of the new “Kiss & Ride” zone. 

The existing ½ hr parking on this section of Rowe Street will be changed 

to NO PARKING between 8.30 - 9.30am and 3.00 - 3.30pm on school 

days. Remember to move parked cars from this section of Rowe Street 

during these times. 

Only parking on the commercial side of the street will be affected by the 

proposed changes. 

If possible, try to avoid using Rowe Street between 3.00 - 3.30pm when 

traffic congestion will be at its peak, unless you are using the “Kiss & 

Ride” zone. 

Council staff and school volunteers will be helping with the operation of 

the new Kiss & Ride zone and directing children to the crossing points in 

the first week.

GLADESVILLE’s famous Aussie Bites Cafe kiosk in Trim Place has urged readers 

of The Weekly Times to sign a petition to keep it open.

the petition which calls on 

Trim Place landlord - The 

City Of Ryde - to provide 

the maintenance and upgrades 

he needs to stay in 

business in a competitive 

local cafe market. 

The petition states: 

“For over a year we have 

been having discussions 

with the council with regard 

to expanding our kiosk 

so we can provide our 

customers with better service 

and variety. 

“Unfortunately the City 

of Ryde Council has not 

been very helpful with the 

ongoing maintenance of 

the space and have suggested 

the space is more 

suitable for another type of 

trade, not a cafe, and shut 

us down. 

“Please support us by 

signing this petition so 

council can act now to 

help us stay trading in Trim 

Place.” 

Although his petition 

does not mention competition 

from new and upmarket 

cafe restaurants 

around him on Victoria 

Road, Gladesville, Mr Pahali 

is aware that Trim Place 

needs urgent improvement 

with pavements repaired 

and gardens upkeep. 

“Just look at the place, 

the pavement is not even, 

the gardens could be in 

better condition and we 

have even had the local 

school come out to cut the 

grass,” he said. 

“Gladesville is growing 

and there is not a lot of 

public space where you 

can enjoy a coffee with 

friends, family and pets 

outdoors.” 

Mr Pahali pays rent to the 

council and has offered to 

contribute his own money 

to help pay for a new look 

venue. 

“There is a real potential 

for this space to look fantastic 

and I will pay for the 

fit out of a new kiosk if the 

council will provide one.” 

As good as his word, he 

has previously paid for and 

submitted architect designs 

for a new look Trim 

Place backed by a 20 page 

submission of suggested 

options. 

He thought his efforts 

had been ignored until he 

recently received this text 

message from the City of 

Ryde, which he passed on 

to The Weekly Times. 

“It may be that your current 

or future business 

operations do not match 

what is possible on this 

space,” the text message 

read. 

It left him fuming. 

“What do they want 

here instead, a cigarette 

stand?” 

“What a comment to 

make after I’ve been here 

for 11 years providing a 

service for thousands of 

local people in a safe and 

friendly environment for 

parents and children,” he 

said. 

“My cafe kiosk is a landmark 

in Gladesville and 

the first day I received a 

hundred signatures for the 

petition.” 

When he reaches his 

goal of a thousand signatures, 

the petition will be 

presented at an upcoming 

council meeting by Clr 

Roy Maggio, who told The 

Weekly Times he hoped Mr 

Pahali will not throw in the 

towel out of frustration. 

“Our Mayor says he supports 

the growth of local 

small business and here is 

an opportunity for him to 

show he does,” he said. 

“It is also an opportunity 

for this council to work 

with George and with his 

ideas to make Trim Place a 

showpiece site for Gladesville.”

overdevelopment court case 

A LANDMARK case brought by the City of Ryde against over development was lost in court 

last Friday. 

The Land and Environment 

Court dismissed the City of 

Ryde’s case that the State 

Government’s Medium Density 

Code should be ruled 

invalid and that controversial 

developments under the 

code could subsequently be 

unlawful 

The City of Ryde case alleged 

the government failed 

to consider certain environmental 

issues it was legally 

required to undertake before 

implementing the code. 

In his judgement, Justice 

Brian Preston SC effectively 

ruled that the Medium Density 

Housing Code was valid. 

City of Ryde Mayor, Clr Jerome 

Laxale said he is disappointed 

by this ruling. 

“While it is a disappointing, 

the City of Ryde respects 

the court’s decision,” Mayor 

Laxale said. 

“However, our community 

does not respect the Government’s 

continued targeting 

of Ryde with overdevelopment. 

“Coupled with the Priority 

Precinct program, the City of 

Ryde still maintains that the 

Medium Density Housing 

Code will have dire consequences 

for our entire community. 

“The code is yet another 

example of NSW Government 

intervention with the 

intention of overdeveloping 

Ryde.” 

He said the court decision 

will not stop the City 

of Ryde’s campaign against 

over development. 

“We will continue our campaign 

for the NSW Government 

to give us a complete 

exemption from the Medium 

Density Housing Code and 

support Council in its efforts 

to continue its work in successfully 

delivering diverse 

and affordable housing supply 

for the community,” Mayor 

Laxale said. 

“I was heartened to read 

that the new Planning Minister 

is not wedded to particular 

government policies 

currently in place. 

“I will request a meeting 

with him to work through 

the situation created by the 

NSW Government’s planning 

laws and help shape 

policies that will deliver appropriate 

development and 

infrastructure while maintaining 

our City’s great character.” 

Nonetheless, the Mayor 

conceded that the court ruling 

is a heavy blow for ratepayers. 

“First it was Priority Precincts, 

cramming 15000 

dwellings into Macquarie 

Park, and now the code will 

lead to planning chaos in our 

quietest streets,” he said. 

“The code will completely 

change the character of 

our City as it will mean the 

number of sites capable of 

being developed for medium 

density housing would have 

increased substantially. 

“Overnight, the City of 

Ryde could be transformed 

from predominantly lowdensity 

neighbourhoods 

with the required supporting 

infrastructure in place to 

medium density neighbourhoods 

outstripping available 

infrastructure and putting 

untold strain on our local 

natural areas. 

“ It is these serious concerns 

that led Council to 

commence legal proceedings 

against the NSW Government 

and the code. 

“The code could also result 

in an additional 60,000 residents 

in these neighbourhoods 

– five times higher 

than the targets set by the 

Greater Sydney Commission.” 

Mayor Laxale Clr said 

Council would also lobby 

new NSW Planning Minister 

Rob Stokes for the City of 

Ryde to be permanently exempt 

from the Medium Density 

Housing Code. 

Council acknowledges Land and Environment Court decision 

Last week, the Land and Environment Court dismissed a claim

The City of Ryde commenced proceedings in the court on behalf 

of residents alleging the government failed to consider certain 

environmental issues it was legally required to undertake before 

implementing the code. 

While it is a disappointing outcome, the City of Ryde respects 

the court’s decision. However, our community does not respect 

the NSW Government’s continued targeting of Ryde with 

overdevelopment. Coupled with the Priority Precinct program, the 

City of Ryde still maintains that the Medium Density Housing Code 

will have dire consequences for our entire community. 

I can assure you the City of Ryde will continue its campaign for the 

NSW Government to give us a complete exemption from the code 

and I plan to request a meeting with new Planning Minister 

Rob Stokes to try and achieve that. 

New skate park completed 

I am delighted to announce that construction of the Meadowbank 

Outdoor Youth and Family Recreation Space has been completed 

and the new skate and scooter park is now open to the public. 

This first-class facility delivers on Council’s commitment to provide 

more recreational outdoor spaces for the entire community. 

I would encourage everyone to get down to the skate and scooter 

park on Saturday 27 April for its official opening. This will be a 

fantastic day out featuring demonstrations by professional skaters,

“very spiritual” experiences 

from his past experiences 

in the Way Of 

The Cross Walk which 

includes one particular 

moment during the crucifixion 

scene at Villa Maria. 

“The most amazing moment 

was the Good Friday 

afternoon when it was 

very misty in the grounds 

of Villa Maria and at the 

moment Jesus died on the 

Cross the was an almost 

eerie calm and a deep and 

solemn silence,” he said. 

“Regardless of whether 

or not your are a Christian 

or even religious the Way 

Of The Cross Walk is just 

such a rewarding experience 

and such a beautiful 

story. 

John de Angelis will 

spend the next two days 

reflecting on the spirituality 

of his role. 

“The journey to Cavalry 

on Good Friday is just like 

our own journey through 

the hard times in life,” he 

said. 

“My own role will give 

me an opportunity to understand 

the emotions

A reflection on Easter 

from a local Parish Priest

STORIES about people bravely rescuing others from dire situations have an uncanny 

ability to captivate our attention and admiration. 

Take last year’s account 

f the rescue of that young 

hai soccer team which had 

ecome trapped by rising 

oodwaters in the cave they 

ere exploring. 

The unfolding drama capured 

the imagination of 

he whole world as we witessed 

how those skilled 

ivers first found them, 

nd then concocted a darng 

plan to get them all out 

afely, against all the odds. 

Even the Thai Navy 

EALS, who participated in 

he rescue, said that they 

ere “not sure if this is a 

iracle, a science, or what” 

hat they were so successul. 

It was as if that soccer 

eam had come back from 

he dead! 

What we Catholics and 

hristians celebrate at Eastr 

is that God concocted 

omething similar for us. 

nd it is this astounding 

ne-off event which still inpires 

us to be better peole, 

and strive for a better 

orld, year in year out. 

The message of Easter is 

good one and it is timeess. 

It may not be believble 

to some people, but it 

s one that deserves to be 

ondered. 

Seeing us trapped in a 

hopeless situation from 

which we unable to save 

ourselves, mortal beings 

that we are yet with an ardent 

longing to live forever, 

God sent his Son into the 

world to get us safely back 

to our Heavenly Maker. 

In doing so an unforgettable 

scene was created in 

history, etched into our consciousness 

like the images 

of the Thai cave rescue and 

recounted for us by the eyewitnesses 

who participated 

in the unfolding drama. 

We call it Holy Week, the 

last week Jesus spent on 

earth in his non-resurrected 

form. It is also the most important 

week in the Christian 

calendar. 

A man enters Jerusalem, 

mounted on a donkey, to 

the roar of the welcoming 

crowd. Only that man we 

also believe to be equally 

the Son of God. His name 

is Jesus, and he came to 

rescue us from the certainty 

and inevitability of death. 

We call that Palm Sunday. 

He then celebrates a final 

meal with his followers, 

indelibly etched into their 

collective memory when he, 

the Master, humbly washed 

his disciple’s feet as a sign 

of gratuitous service. We 

call that the Last Supper. 

He then goes off to an 

olive grove to pray for the 

strength to get through the 

ordeal ahead of him. The 

grove and the prayer is 

called Gethsemane, and the 

ordeal he will face the Way 

of the Cross. 

This perhaps incredible 

tale to some is what we 

Christians have recounted 

from one generation to 

the next for close on 2000 

years. Yet we are constantly 

on the lookout for modern 

day metaphors in real life to 

deepen our understanding 

of this event, and appreciate 

what Jesus did for us. 

The Thai cave rescue 

helped make that event 

more graphic. For like the 

divers who had to escort 

those young boys and their 

coach out through the dark 

and murky waters of that 

intricate cave, so too did 

Jesus find a way out for us. 

We often find ourselves 

trapped in bad habits that 

are hard to break, which 

hurt ourselves and others, in 

which we say and do what 

we know we shouldn’t, and 

fail to do or say what we really 

should. And we find it 

hard to break the inertia and 

indifference which rob us of 

the energy to do something 

for others. 

We call that sin. It is like 

the rising floodwaters of 

that cave. Dark and perilous. 

A threat to the promise 

of eternal life. There seems 

to be no way out of them. 

The divers who went into 

that flooded cave knew the 

risks, but the stakes were 

equally high. The soccer 

team faced almost certain 

death in that cold flooded 

cave if they didn’t act decisively 

on their behalf. 

One of the divers didn’t 

make it out alive. I was 

deeply moved when news 

of his self-sacrifice became 

known, and of the widow 

and family he left behind in 

order to secure their safety. 

He paid the highest price for 

them to be saved. 

Holy Week is our week of 

remembrance of the incredible 

deed that Jesus, whom 

we believe to be the Son of 

God, did for us. We especially 

celebrate the day he 

rose from the dead. We call 

that Easter Sunday. 

But we also remember 

with gratitude and admiration 

the supreme sacrifice 

on Good Friday that he 

made. He, too, paid the 

highest price for us, we be- 

lieve that he sacrificed his 

earthly life that we might 

have a beautiful life beyond 

the murky curtain of death. 

At a press conference, to 

thank the rescuers for their 

incredible bravery and skill, 

one of the boys reflecting on 

his experience said that it 

had taught him to be “more 

careful and live my life to the 

fullest.” 

That is what we take away 

with us from Holy Week. A 

renewed desire to live our 

lives better and to the fullest, 

so that our limited time 

in this world not be wasted, 

and in some way to imitate 

Jesus’ self-sacrifice on the 

Cross for others, in gratitude 

to the One who “loved 

us and gave up his life for 

us”. 

For if our lives have been 

rescued by Jesus like those 

boys in that cave, and there 

is an afterlife with our Maker 

in Heaven, then we have a 

lot to thank our divine rescuer 

for. 

Personally, my hope this 

Easter is to be inspired to 

help rescue others from 

the “rising floodwaters” of 

a modern way of life lived 

centred on ourselves, our 

wellbeing and a comfortable 

existence. 

By doing so, we can miss 

the opportunities to do 

something heroic for others, 

something admirable, 

involving gratuitous service 

and sacrifice, because we 

have developed the bad 

habit of living basically for 

ourselves. 

Once again, I invite you 

all to get down to your local 

churches and delve into the 

message of Easter for yourselves, 

like those intrepid 

divers, two and a half miles 

from the entrance to that 

cave. 

The Christian year really 

starts and ends with Holy 

Week, these eight days of 

reflection which start us all 

off on a good heading for 

the year ahead. It is meant 

to be a celebration of the 

power of love over evil, of 

selflessness over selfishness, 

of life over death, and 

not the other way round. 

So have a beautiful Easter, 

reflecting on what Jesus 

has done for you. It could 

help us to be “more careful” 

with what we do and say, 

and inspire us to “live our 

lives to the fullest” over the 

coming year. 

And it could be more riveting 

and edifying than even a 

visit to the Easter Show!

“We hope to encourage 

water dragons – 

and other creatures – 

to visit.” 

The plan also incorporates 

compost bins, 

reducing landfill waste 

while also keeping the 

garden fertile. 

“We frequently run 

working bees with parents 

and local community,” 

Jacqui said. 

“The big tasks – preparing 

and setting up 

the garden spaces – 

will be community activities.” 

The children get to 

muck in, too: “We have 

kid-sized shovels and 

watering cans for gardening, 

and kid-sized 

baskets for collecting 

food,” Jacqui said. 

“Last week, the children 

helped prepare 

the garden with sugarcane 

mulch.” 

The children already 

help prepare meals; 

now they will help 

collect, save and dry 

pumpkin and tomato 

seeds to later plant, 

and later still, harvest, 

taking the process full 

circle. 

This grant is funded 

from the sale of Woolworths 

recyclable Bag 

for good, introduced 

in 2018 when the supermarket 

stopped using 

single-use plastic 

bags.

bodily function and

There are a several 

misconceptions regarding 

pain and what 

it actually means. 

Here are six rules of

1. Pain is an output 

of the brain:

pain in different regions

pain is generated always

and interpretation

3. Pain is influenced

more like a discussion 

where parts of 

your brain vote on 

how much pain to express. 

Regardless of the injury, 

pain experience 

can increase if the 

injury has significant 

implications. 

Likewise, pain experience 

can significantly 

drop if in a present 

environment such as 

a social event. 

4. New pain act as 

natural protection 

against danger or injury: 

Pain is a good thing. 

Without it there 

would be significantly 

less motivation to 

avoid and address 

potentially damaging 

issues to the body. 

It serves as our 

body’s natural defence 

mechanism. 

5. Long term chronic 

pain is a result of a 

oversensitive nervous 

system which no 

longer warns against 

damage: 

Sometimes our detection 

system malfunctions 

where pain 

still presents after the 

initial injury is gone. 

This type of pain 

can be confusing as 

listening to pain normally 

is beneficial 

6. Many modalities 

of treatment including 

physiotherapy are 

able to address these 

issues: 

Pain is a complex

reasons for its presence, 

physiotherapy

Thunder develop strong leadership 

LOCAL students including Shakthikram Kulandaivel from Homebush Boys High 

School were each awarded for their outstanding contributions to the community in 

the Sydney Thunder’s leadership program. 

This marked a very special 

occasion for Homebush Boys 

High, Hills Sports High and 

Westfields Sports High schools, 

where awarded students became 

the first alumni of this 

year’s leadership program, progressing 

through the various 

stages of leadership development. 

Students worked with local 

primary schools by leading 

reading and cricket sessions 

- helping to umpire and coordinate 

the Cricket NSW Woolworths 

Cricket Blast School 

Cup. 

Students also volunteered 

at community organisations 

alongside Creating Links - an 

organisation who engages 

members of the community 

through innovative programs 

and activities by identifying local 

needs - reading to children 

at the Community Reading Day

Hunters Hill and Lane Cove women 

asked to share inspiring stories 

A NEW project is inviting women in Hunters Hill and Lane Cove are being encouraged 

to share their achievements and discuss the challenges of re-entering the 

workforce. 

The story sharing project titled 

‘The NSW Inspirational Women 

Online Showcase’ aims to feature 

a range of women sharing 

videos online and giving advice 

for other women. 

Lane Cove MP Anthony Roberts 

hopes that women of all 

ages with inspiring stories of 

courage will take part in this initiative. 

“I would encourage the women 

of the Lane Cove Electorate 

who feel they can offer encouragement 

or inspiration to other 

women to share their stories 

and participate in the online 

mentoring campaign,” he said. 

“Women from our community 

come from all walks of life 

and have valuable insights that 

can empower young women to 

develop confidence and reach 

their full potential.” 

The campaign is part of the 

NSW Women’s Strategy 2018- 

2022 which Mr Roberts described 

as a whole-of-government 

response to improve the 

economic, social and physical 

wellbeing of women. 

The Minister for Women Tanya 

Davies hopes the project will 

particularly help women to re 

enter the workforce after maternity. 

“Giving women access to 

information, support and networks 

is vital to ensure they see 

a broad range of career opportunities 

available to them and 

can also help make re-entry 

into the workforce after having a 

family less overwhelming,” she

The 35-year old will 

bring down the curtain 

on his 18-year career

Thieves impersonate Eastwood police 

Police allege the pair 

entered the shop around 

1.20pm and forced the 31 

year old male customer 

to the ground, while the 

other jumped over the 

counter and emptied the 

contents of a safe into a 

bag. 

Two wallets were also 

stolen before the pair fled 

the store before taking 

the pair’s wallets. 

One alleged theif is described 

as being around 

20 years old, about 

182cm tall, with mediumlength 

strawberry blond 

hair. 

The other alleged thief 

is described as being of 

Caucasian appearance 

with a tanned complexion, 

aged in his late 20s, about 

180cm tall, with short 

black hair, and a trimmed 

beard. 

Both are depicted wearing 

black suits with white 

shirts, black ties, and sun- 

glasses.

A WEST RYDE man 

was arrested and charged 

with Indecent Assault last 

week. 

Police allege the 31 year 

old indecently assaulted a 

23 year old woman near 

Meadowbank Station at 

11.57 pm on Friday, April 

5th. 

“The woman walked up 

the stairs onto the footbridge 

followed by the 

man,” police said. 

“The woman stopped as 

she was attempting to put 

her shoes on and the man 

followed her, with his face 

covered with a bandana. 

“He then indecently 

grabbed the woman. 

“The woman then 

grabbed the man by the 

hair, pulling two of his 

dreadlocks from his head, 

screamed out and another 

man came to assist her.” 

Officers later found the 

man near the site of the 

alleged assault but he 

was unconcious and was 

taken to Concord Hospital 

after being treated by 

paramedics. 

He was later released 

from hospital into the custody 

of police and was 

charged with 

Indecent Assault and 

Stalking/Intimidation.

junior field athlete Ben,14 

IN the competitive sport of field athletics they don’t come tougher than 14 

year old Ryde Little Athletics whiz Ben Stevens. 

The Concord West 

resident has burst onto 

the athletics scene with 

stand out performances 

in the shot put, hammer 

throw and discus 

at elite junior level. 

Since taking up athletics 

as a raw boned 

10 year old, the promising 

Stevens has earned 

an amazing 23 State 

and National medals 

and is keen to expand 

his already impressive 

collection. 

Now in his third season 

with Ryde Little 

Athletics Club, dedicated 

Ben trains four 

times a week with his 

Trinity Grammar School 

coach David Bruce. 

At the recent Australian 

Junior Athletics 

Championships staged 

at Sydney Olympic 

Park, Stevens won 

gold in the Under 15 

Shot Put - improving 

on his bronze at the 

2018 nationals. 

He finished sixth the 

following day in the 

hammer throw final 

before backing up two 

days later to try and 

defend his national discus 

title. 

Ben was in top form 

leading into this event 

- throwing a solid 53.37 

metres at the NSW Little 

Athletics Carnival a 

few weeks prior. 

The young gun managed 

to deliver a massive 

last throw but 

unfortunately his foot 

caught the rim of the 

circle and a foul was 

recorded - leaving him 

with a silver medal in 

his pet event. 

During the championships 

Ben was 

thrilled to meet one of 

his sporting idols in 

New Zealand’s world 

shot put champion and 

Olympic medallist Tomas 

Walsh. 

The talented Stevens 

was honoured to have 

won gold at the same 

meet as Walsh, who 

claimed shot put gold 

in the Open division 

at Australian National 

titles. 

Ben was in recordbreaking 

form at this 

year’s State Little 

A’s Championships - 

smashing both the shot 

put and discus records 

that had been standing 

since 1998. 

He set a new mark for 

Ryde Little Athletes by 

winning State gold in 

shot put with a throw 

of 15.19m and discus 

(53.37m). 

Stevens is an emerging 

all rounder and 

represented Ryde in 

Dubbo recently where 

he placed third at the 

NSW State Combined 

event that consists 

of six track and field 

events. 

Ben’s long term goal 

is to represent Australia 

at the 2022 Youth 

Olympic Games in Africa. 

It is a huge challenge 

juggling training and 

school work but the 

Trinity Grammar student 

is well on the way 

to realising his athletics 

dream.

to advance to

skill and courage 

to sink the Steelers on 

their home turf with a 

dominant second half 

performance.

potting a conversion to

World Cup gold for local Taekwondo pupils 

A BAND of Taekwondo students from the ITF Fitness Centre at Rydalmere 

have covered themselves in glory at the 7th ITF World Cup in Sydney. 

Under the guidance of Grandmaster 

Michael Daher, the 

President of ITF Taekwondo 

Australia, the local contingent 

did their country proud by collecting 

a swag of medals which 

included an impressive nine 

gold. 

Large teams from the Oceania 

and Asia region were a contributing 

factor to the success of 

the World Cup event with New 

Zealand topping the medal tally 

with 62 gold, 53 silver and 67 

bronze and Australia finishing 

second with 27 gold, 22 silver 

and 40 bronze. 

There was no prouder mentor 

than Grandmaster Daher - the 

highest ranked ITF taekwando 

martial artist in the Oceania region 

- who has coached the ITF 

Rydalmere contingent with outstanding 

results. 

Leading the gold medal rush 

was 21 year old world sparring 

technique champion Chris 

Sarkis, who finished first at the 

World Cup in the 6-Dan division. 

The skilful Sarkis confirmed 

his status as an international 

powerhouse with a flawless 

display in his category and will 

be chasing more gold later this 

month when he defends his title 

at the World Taekwondo Championships 

in Germany. 

Other Rydalmere gold medallists 

at the World Cup were 

George Khoury (15-17yrs Sparring); 

Fred Sarkis (15-17yrs 

Sparring Technique); Andrew 

Dib (18-35yrs Sparring) and 

Meline Khadi (Female 36-45yrs 

Sparring). 

Four students Matthew Travieso, 

Jacob Kadi, Corey Massoud 

and James Sarkis all picked up 

gold medals in the World Cup 

Team events. 

Picking up a silver medal in 

the 15-17yrs Sparring division 

was Fred Sarkis - a cousin of 

Chris Sarkis and a talented 

taekwondo exponent in his own 

right. 

Four Rydalmere students also 

grabbed bronze medals - Daniel 

Sarkis in the 12-14yrs Sparring; 

Jon Boumelhem in the 15- 

17yrs Sparring; James Sarkis 

in the 15-17rs 1st to 3rd Dan 

Sparring and Shianne Massoud 

in the Female 12-14ys Sparring 

divisions.
