The Weekly Times - TWT - 17th April 2019
The Weekly Times - TWT - cheekily describes itself as a campaigning, crusading, truth-seeking, death defying, Aussie battler-aligned, one-eyed-Tiger-led news organisation dedicated to Sydney's north west. It's one of the few remaining independently run community newspapers and turns 100 years old in 2021 - so if you want to show your support for independent media, have a quick look at the paper, submit a letter to the editor via its website or like or share one of its posts on social media. The flip book - or digital edition/replica - of the 17th April 2019 edition of TWT can be reached here: https://weeklytimes.com.au/the-weekly-times-twt-17th-April-2019/ And the most current edition of TWT is always reachable using this short address: bit.ly/OurTWT

EASTWOOD COMMUNITY NEWS
Caring and Catering at the CWA
by Shereen Khor
I first chanced upon the Country Women’s Association (CWA) Rest Centre
Tea Room in Eastwood (Opposite the railway station, behind Eastwood Library)
while looking for a clean, cool, quiet place to read and rest, with a nice
cuppa.
It was a pleasant surprise that one could
get Devonshire Tea (two scones with jam and
cream, washed down with tea or coffee) for
$5.00, and take home scones at 60 cents each.
People who enjoy a home-made scone are
regular customers, as are mothers taking advantage
of the baby-changing facilities.
Also for sale are handicrafts, jams, farmfresh
pure honey, pickles/chutneys - all made/
donated by volunteers, and second-hand
books. With Easter around the corner, Easter
eggs in cute knitted chicks are on sale at only
$2 each.
All proceeds go towards helping families
in the country, especially in drought/floodstricken
areas; country children’s education
grant; and even Ryde Hospital.
The Tea Room is open Mondays to Fridays
from 10.00am to 3.00pm; group catering of
up to 20 people welcome with a week’s notice.
Up to 100 scones can be ordered with 7 days’
notice. Just call: 9858 1911
Volunteers to help serve Devonshire tea and
service customers are needed: once or twice a
month, for morning or afternoon shift. Morning
shift: 9.30am – 12.30pm; afternoon shift:
12.00pm – 3.30pm, Monday – Friday.
Anyone interested please contact: Margery
East 9868 7432 or Jan Eagleton 9871 2702 for
an information/training session.
EASTER CAKES were an irresistible treat for City of Parramatta Lord
Mayor Andrew Wilson in Epping yesterday.
Lord Mayor Wilson visited Epping Bakery and other small businesses
alongside Small Business Minister Damien Tudehope MLC to promote
state government small business initiatives.
The popular Lord Mayor spoke with locals about the exciting cultural
events being hosted by the City of Parramatta this year and the upcoming
opening of the new museum and other brilliant civic developments. TWT
CHANGES TO PARKING ON ROWE STREET
From Tuesday 30 April 2019, the Eastwood Public School “Kiss & Ride”
will be relocated to Rowe Street opposite the school, between the fire
station at Shaftsbury Road and the zebra crossing.
The new “Kiss & Ride” zone will operate from 8.30 - 9.30am and
3.00 - 3.30pm on school days. The old “Kiss & Ride” zone along the
school and fire station frontages on Shaftsbury Road will be removed and
become NO STOPPING at all times. You will no longer be able to stop on
Shaftsbury Road.
There is a zebra crossing at one end of the new “Kiss & Ride”zone with
traffic lights at the other end, where children can safely cross Rowe
Street to and from the school.
How will these changes affect Rowe Street?
There will be additional cars and children in Rowe Street during drop off
and pick up times. When driving in Rowe Street, be sure to watch out for
children crossing at the pedestrian crossing and the traffic lights, and
cars pulling out of the new “Kiss & Ride” zone.
The existing ½ hr parking on this section of Rowe Street will be changed
to NO PARKING between 8.30 - 9.30am and 3.00 - 3.30pm on school
days. Remember to move parked cars from this section of Rowe Street
during these times.
Only parking on the commercial side of the street will be affected by the
proposed changes.
If possible, try to avoid using Rowe Street between 3.00 - 3.30pm when
traffic congestion will be at its peak, unless you are using the “Kiss &
Ride” zone.
Council staff and school volunteers will be helping with the operation of
the new Kiss & Ride zone and directing children to the crossing points in
the first week.
Skin cancers are best
when treated early
BY DR PETER KIM FRACGP FACCS
Skin cancers are best treated early
and when they are small.
When cancer gets to this stage,
there is no other option but surgery.
This patient had skin cancer removed,
and the hole was filled with
a skin graft from the thigh.
They often take a long time to
heal. And the graft surgery can be
avoided if detected early.
