The Weekly Times - TWT - 17th April 2019
The Weekly Times - TWT - cheekily describes itself as a campaigning, crusading, truth-seeking, death defying, Aussie battler-aligned, one-eyed-Tiger-led news organisation dedicated to Sydney's north west. It's one of the few remaining independently run community newspapers and turns 100 years old in 2021 - so if you want to show your support for independent media, have a quick look at the paper, submit a letter to the editor via its website or like or share one of its posts on social media. Tigers sink Steelers to
push U/16 Cup title claims
The Tiger cubs
showed their champion
qualities with a
spirited 18-10 victory
over Illawarra last
Saturday at WIN Stadium
to advance to
the second week of
the finals.
BALMAIN Under 16 junior representative rugby league
team is on the premiership prowl in the 2019 NSWRL Harold
Matthews Cup finals series.
Ross Mignacca’s talented
charges are on
track to reach the final
four when they square
off with the Canterbury
Bulldogs this Good Friday
at Kogarah Jubilee
Oval at 10am.
But there was no joy
for Scott Kenna’s S.G
Ball cubs who bowed
out of the Under 18 title
race after a disappointing
34-10 loss to
Canberra in a qualifying
final at HE Laybutt Field
at Blacktown.
All eyes will be on
the U/16 Tigers who
displayed true character,
skill and courage
to sink the Steelers on
their home turf with a
dominant second half
performance.
Illawarra crossed
twice for tries through
centre Ben Lavender in
the second minute and
back rower Jarvis Polley
(28th minute) with
five eighth Toby Peters
potting a conversion to
establish a 10-8 lead
after an absorbing first
stanza.
Promising utility back
Alex Miltiadous and
elusive centre Chris
Trad nabbed first half
tries to keep the enterprising
young Tigers in
the hunt.
the Balmain cubs
after the break with the
forwards producing
solid efforts to lay the
foundations for a gutsy
triumph.
and classy fullback
Ponipate Rakuli
in the space of seven
minutes to give the
lead.
MEANWHILE a rampaging
Canberra side
had too many big guns
for a courageous Balmain
outfit in their U/18
S.G Ball qualifying final.
The junior Raiders
blitzed the cubs in a
first half onslaught to
open up a commanding
22-4 lead at the interval.
Sharp centre Junior
Tupou and top prospect
Jack Williams grabbed
try doubles with winger
Aidan Gaffey and fullback
Manase Kaho
completing the six try
rout.
Five eighth Brayden
Robertson capped a
fine game by booting
five goals from six attempts.
Industrious forwards
Zayn Wilkins and
skipper Daniel Sykes
