The Weekly Times - TWT - 17th April 2019
The Weekly Times - TWT - cheekily describes itself as a campaigning, crusading, truth-seeking, death defying, Aussie battler-aligned, one-eyed-Tiger-led news organisation dedicated to Sydney's north west. It's one of the few remaining independently run community newspapers and turns 100 years old in 2021 - so if you want to show your support for independent media, have a quick look at the paper, submit a letter to the editor via its website or like or share one of its posts on social media. The flip book - or digital edition/replica - of the 17th April 2019 edition of TWT can be reached here: https://weeklytimes.com.au/the-weekly-times-twt-17th-April-2019/ And the most current edition of TWT is always reachable using this short address: bit.ly/OurTWT

Thunder develop strong leadership
LOCAL students including Shakthikram Kulandaivel from Homebush Boys High
School were each awarded for their outstanding contributions to the community in
the Sydney Thunder’s leadership program.
This marked a very special
occasion for Homebush Boys
High, Hills Sports High and
Westfields Sports High schools,
where awarded students became
the first alumni of this
year’s leadership program, progressing
through the various
stages of leadership development.
Students worked with local
primary schools by leading
reading and cricket sessions
- helping to umpire and coordinate
the Cricket NSW Woolworths
Cricket Blast School
Cup.
Students also volunteered
at community organisations
alongside Creating Links - an
organisation who engages
members of the community
through innovative programs
and activities by identifying local
needs - reading to children
at the Community Reading Day
in Chester Hill.
Each student was given the
opportunity in a leadership
workshop to fine-tune and reflect
on their skills with Sydney
Thunder boss, Lee Germon
- readying them for their final
years of schooling.
Star Thunder BBL wicketkeeper
Jay Lenton and WBBL
veteran Alex Blackwell - among
others - featured throughout the
program sharing their insights
on leadership, goal-setting and
belonging.
Sydney Thunder General Manager
Lee Germon and WBBL
star Hannah Darlington were on
deck to present each individual
with their leadership awards.
“Sydney Thunder is committed
to providing real and
genuine opportunities for people
across the Thunder Nation”
Germon said.
“The Thunder Leadership
Program enables students to
develop their leadership skills,
grow their self-confidence and
feel a sense of belonging in their
community.”
Sydney Thunder pride themselves
on engaging with their
surrounding community and
giving back to their fans - this
year alone, the Thunder have
helped provide over 63,000
meals to those in need through
Thunder Nation.
Hunters Hill and Lane Cove women
asked to share inspiring stories
A NEW project is inviting women in Hunters Hill and Lane Cove are being encouraged
to share their achievements and discuss the challenges of re-entering the
workforce.
The story sharing project titled
‘The NSW Inspirational Women
Online Showcase’ aims to feature
a range of women sharing
videos online and giving advice
for other women.
Lane Cove MP Anthony Roberts
hopes that women of all
ages with inspiring stories of
courage will take part in this initiative.
“I would encourage the women
of the Lane Cove Electorate
who feel they can offer encouragement
or inspiration to other
women to share their stories
and participate in the online
mentoring campaign,” he said.
“Women from our community
come from all walks of life
and have valuable insights that
can empower young women to
develop confidence and reach
their full potential.”
The campaign is part of the
NSW Women’s Strategy 2018-
2022 which Mr Roberts described
as a whole-of-government
response to improve the
economic, social and physical
wellbeing of women.
The Minister for Women Tanya
Davies hopes the project will
particularly help women to re
enter the workforce after maternity.
“Giving women access to
information, support and networks
is vital to ensure they see
a broad range of career opportunities
available to them and
can also help make re-entry
into the workforce after having a
family less overwhelming,” she
said.
“These videos will inspire
and encourage all women,
young and old, to follow paths
they may have otherwise overlooked,
by seeing how others
are navigating their way and
overcoming challenges unique
to women.
“Enabling women to build
confidence and resilience to
pursue careers and opportunities
in traditionally male-dominated
fields is one of the aims
of this new NSW Government
online mentoring campaign.”
Mr Roberts said the videos
can now by viewed on a smart
Some mothers may be
overwhelmed by the prospect
of resuming a career
after maternity, but a new
project can offer advice.
phone.
“Videos can be filmed on a
smart phone or on a tablet and
will be reviewed to ensure they
highlight a diverse range of insights,
stories and accomplishments;
they will be available on
the Women NSW website and
social media channels,” he said.
