Hwang Freelance Reporter An appreciation for the artistic endeavors of local students was on full display as more than 300 locals packed Highland Park’s Art Center Thursday, April 11, for the opening of the 2019 Central Suburban League Art Exhibition. The annual exhibition highlights 600-plus twodimensional and threedimensional works of art from the 12 CSL schools. New Trier art department chair Alicia Landes, who has served as the art exhibit coordinator for the past six years, said each school chooses 55 pieces to exhibit. Displayed works include: mediums of drawing and painting, portraits, social justice and expressionism, body art, glass, ceramics, graphic design, sculptures and photography. The exhibition’s opening night drew art-lovers far and wide to Highland Park. It is open to the public and will run through April 20. “It’s not a competition,” Landes said. “It’s a celebration of our student artists. We hope the community comes to see what the kids have created.” Glenbrook North graduate Laura Hanna walked into the opening reception and saw Lee Block, her former art teacher from Glenbrook North High School. “I went into arts education because she inspired me so much, and I want to inspire other kids like she inspired me,” said Hanna, who graduated from GBN in 1996 and is now a fine arts teacher at Maine East High School. Rogerio then thanked Lee, saying “I owe my education to you because you taught my teacher.” “This is a ripple effect that we as artists and art teachers embrace, to be able to inspire those of the future,” said Block, one of the founding members of the CSL Art Exhibition, beaming with pride. “This is so beyond what my hopes and dreams were when I first started teaching 38 years ago — to have a lasting effect on a student who then carries her art spirit to the next generation.” Natalie Sandlow, 15, a sophomore at Glenbrook North, was excited to have her digital photograph of a bicycle carriage driver that she took from a bridge in Chicago with her Nikon D3300 for her Photography 1 class last semester. Sandlow said she is following in the footsteps of her grandfather and her father with her love of photography. Her grandfather traveled the world and took photos while her father likes to take sports photographs of her games. Sandlow is a three-season athlete at GBN, doing cross country, basketball and track and field. “This makes me proud of my work,” Sandlow said. “It’s pretty cool having people see it.” Olivia Wilas, 18, a senior at Glenbrook South, displayed an oil painting of colorful protea flowers titled “Strength,” which she painted in her AP Art class. She plans to attend the Milwaukee Institute of Art & Design, where she hopes to study industrial design. Wilas said this is her second year being a part of this annual student exhibition. Last year, she displayed a two-canvas painting of a heart being ripped apart from her series based on the theme of fear. “This means a lot to me,” Wilas said. “It’s cool to have a bunch of people looking at my work.” A.J. Stephens, 15, of Glenview, displayed a film photograph she took with a manual camera of the Prince Waikiki hotel in Honolulu, where her family spent their last New Year’s Day during winter vacation, for her Photography 1 class at New Trier, where she is a freshman. Stephens said that she was struck by the lines and patterns of the adjacent buildings with the palm trees in the foreground of every building. She loves exploring angles and experimenting with lines and shapes in her photography. “I like the way you can be very exact,” Stephens said. “I know exactly what’s going to be in the photo and if I don’t like it, I can change it.” She said even with film photographs, there are ways to manipulate the photos, such as using chemicals to layer on color in black-andwhite photographs. Police have identified the man as Raul Gonzalez, of Schiller Park. The two-car crash occurred at 5:28 a.m. in the 4700 block of West Lake Avenue. Gonzalez and the driver of the other vehicle were transported to Lutheran General Hospital in Park Ridge, where Gonzalez was pronounced dead at 6:51 a.m. the same day, according to a press release. The second driver was treated at Lutheran General Hospital for non-lifethreatening injuries. Police cleared the roadway for traffic after the Glenview Police Department and the Major Crash Assistance Team investigated the cause of the crash for several hours that morning. and had one passenger in the car, a 42-year-old man from Grayslake. The driver, who is not being identified, opened his car door and intentionally fell out of the moving vehicle on the roadway, for an unknown reason, according to the passenger. Witnesses reported the driver got up and jumped off the overpass, falling onto the railroad tracks approximately 30-feet below the roadway, per the release. The driver sustained serious injuries and was transported to Advocate Condell Medical Center in Libertyville. Sgt. Christopher Covelli, of the Lake County Sheriff’s Office, said the driver is in stable condition at the hospital as of April 9.
