that had passed; how <strong>the</strong> <strong>Egypt</strong>ians were destroyed when <strong>the</strong>y attempted <strong>to</strong><br />
detain <strong>the</strong>m, contrary <strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong> command <strong>of</strong> God; and after what manner <strong>the</strong><br />
very same river was <strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong> o<strong>the</strong>rs bloody, and not fit for drinking, but was <strong>to</strong><br />
<strong>the</strong>m sweet, and fit for drinking; and how <strong>the</strong>y went a new road through <strong>the</strong><br />
sea, which fled a long way from <strong>the</strong>m, by which very means <strong>the</strong>y were<br />
<strong>the</strong>mselves preserved, but saw <strong>the</strong>ir enemies destroyed; and that when <strong>the</strong>y<br />
were in want <strong>of</strong> weapons, God gave <strong>the</strong>m plenty <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>m; - and so he<br />
recounted all <strong>the</strong> particular instances, how when <strong>the</strong>y were, in appearance,<br />
just going <strong>to</strong> be destroyed, God had saved <strong>the</strong>m in a surprising manner; and<br />
that he had still <strong>the</strong> same power; and that <strong>the</strong>y ought not even now <strong>to</strong> despair<br />
<strong>of</strong> his providence over <strong>the</strong>m; and accordingly he exhorted <strong>the</strong>m <strong>to</strong> continue<br />
quiet, and <strong>to</strong> consider that help would not come <strong>to</strong>o late, though it come not<br />
immediately, if it be present with <strong>the</strong>m before <strong>the</strong>y suffer any great<br />
misfortune; that <strong>the</strong>y ought <strong>to</strong> reason thus: that God delays <strong>to</strong> assist <strong>the</strong>m, not<br />
because he has no regard <strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong>m, but because he will first try <strong>the</strong>ir fortitude,<br />
and <strong>the</strong> pleasure <strong>the</strong>y take in <strong>the</strong>ir freedom, that he may learn whe<strong>the</strong>r you<br />
have souls great enough <strong>to</strong> bear want <strong>of</strong> food, and scarcity <strong>of</strong> water, on its<br />
account; or whe<strong>the</strong>r you ra<strong>the</strong>r love <strong>to</strong> be slaves, as cattle are slaves <strong>to</strong> such<br />
as own <strong>the</strong>m, and feed <strong>the</strong>m liberally, but only in order <strong>to</strong> make <strong>the</strong>m more<br />
useful in <strong>the</strong>ir service. <strong>That</strong> as for himself, he shall not be so much concerned<br />
for his own preservation; for if he die unjustly, he shall not reckon it any<br />
affliction, but that he is concerned for <strong>the</strong>m, lest, by casting s<strong>to</strong>nes at him,<br />
<strong>the</strong>y should be thought <strong>to</strong> condemn God himself.<br />
5. By this means Moses pacified <strong>the</strong> people, and restrained <strong>the</strong>m from<br />
s<strong>to</strong>ning him, and brought <strong>the</strong>m <strong>to</strong> repent <strong>of</strong> what <strong>the</strong>y were going <strong>to</strong> do. And<br />
because he thought <strong>the</strong> necessity <strong>the</strong>y were under made <strong>the</strong>ir passion less<br />
unjustifiable, he thought he ought <strong>to</strong> apply himself <strong>to</strong> God by prayer and<br />
supplication; and going up <strong>to</strong> an eminence, he requested <strong>of</strong> God for some<br />
succor for <strong>the</strong> people, and some way <strong>of</strong> deliverance from <strong>the</strong> want <strong>the</strong>y were<br />
in, because in him, and in him alone, was <strong>the</strong>ir hope <strong>of</strong> salvation; and he<br />
