again with <strong>the</strong> great difficulty <strong>the</strong>re was in obtaining it; that <strong>the</strong> rivers were so large and deep that <strong>the</strong>y could not be passed over; and that <strong>the</strong> hills were so high that <strong>the</strong>y could not travel along for <strong>the</strong>m; that <strong>the</strong> cities were strong with walls, and <strong>the</strong>ir firm fortifications round about <strong>the</strong>m. They <strong>to</strong>ld <strong>the</strong>m also, that <strong>the</strong>y found at Hebron <strong>the</strong> posterity <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> giants. Accordingly <strong>the</strong>se spies, who had seen <strong>the</strong> land <strong>of</strong> Canaan, when <strong>the</strong>y perceived that all <strong>the</strong>se difficulties were greater <strong>the</strong>re than <strong>the</strong>y had met with since <strong>the</strong>y came out <strong>of</strong> <strong>Egypt</strong>, <strong>the</strong>y were aftrighted at <strong>the</strong>m <strong>the</strong>mselves, and endeavored <strong>to</strong> affright <strong>the</strong> multitude also. 3. So <strong>the</strong>y supposed, from what <strong>the</strong>y had heard, that it was impossible <strong>to</strong> get <strong>the</strong> possession <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> country. And when <strong>the</strong> congregation was dissolved, <strong>the</strong>y, <strong>the</strong>ir wives and children, continued <strong>the</strong>ir lamentation, as if God would not indeed assist <strong>the</strong>m, but only promised <strong>the</strong>m fair. They also again blamed Moses, and made a clamor against him and his bro<strong>the</strong>r Aaron, <strong>the</strong> high priest. Accordingly <strong>the</strong>y passed that night very ill, and with contumelious language against <strong>the</strong>m; but in <strong>the</strong> morning <strong>the</strong>y ran <strong>to</strong> a congregation, intending <strong>to</strong> s<strong>to</strong>ne Moses and Aaron, and so <strong>to</strong> return back in<strong>to</strong> <strong>Egypt</strong>. 4. But <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> spies, <strong>the</strong>re were Joshua <strong>the</strong> son <strong>of</strong> Nun, <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> tribe <strong>of</strong> Ephraim, and Caleb <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> tribe <strong>of</strong> Judah, that were afraid <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> consequence, and came in<strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong> midst <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>m, and stilled <strong>the</strong> multitude, and desired <strong>the</strong>m <strong>to</strong> be <strong>of</strong> good courage; and nei<strong>the</strong>r <strong>to</strong> condemn God, as having <strong>to</strong>ld <strong>the</strong>m lies, nor <strong>to</strong> hearken <strong>to</strong> those who had aftrighted <strong>the</strong>m, by telling <strong>the</strong>m what was not true concerning <strong>the</strong> Canaanites, but <strong>to</strong> those that encouraged <strong>the</strong>m <strong>to</strong> hope for good success; and that <strong>the</strong>y should gain possession <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> happiness promised <strong>the</strong>m, because nei<strong>the</strong>r <strong>the</strong>. height <strong>of</strong> mountains, nor <strong>the</strong> depth <strong>of</strong> rivers, could hinder men <strong>of</strong> true courage from attempting <strong>the</strong>m, especially while God would take care <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>m beforehand, and be assistant <strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong>m. "Let us <strong>the</strong>n go," said <strong>the</strong>y, "against our enemies, and have no suspicion <strong>of</strong> ill success, trusting in God <strong>to</strong> conduct us, and following those that are <strong>to</strong> be our leaders." Thus did <strong>the</strong>se two exhort <strong>the</strong>m, 67
and endeavor <strong>to</strong> pacify <strong>the</strong> rage <strong>the</strong>y were in. But Moses and Aaron fell on <strong>the</strong> ground, and besought God, not for <strong>the</strong>ir own deliverance, but that he would put a s<strong>to</strong>p <strong>to</strong> what <strong>the</strong> people were unwarily doing, and would bring <strong>the</strong>ir minds <strong>to</strong> a quiet temper, which were now disordered by <strong>the</strong>ir present passion. The cloud also did now appear, and s<strong>to</strong>od over <strong>the</strong> tabernacle, and declared <strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong>m <strong>the</strong> presence <strong>of</strong> God <strong>to</strong> be <strong>the</strong>re. 68
