Seventeen-year-old who never came home

IN HER Redcliffs home 

overlooking the sea, you will 

find Jan Bargrove, one of a small 

handful of people still carrying 

the Bargrove name. 

Her late husband Robert 

Bargrove was the great-nephew 

of a young cadet whose life 

was tragically cut short during 

World War 1. 

Tomorrow on Anzac Day, 

he will be remembered, 

along with more than 18,000 

other New Zealanders who 

lost their lives during the Great 

War. 

It was November 19, 1917, 

and Geoffrey Bargrove was in 

his element, the 17-year-old 

was serving as an officer 

cadet aboard the S.S. Aparima, 

which was steaming from 

London to Barry, in South 

Wales.

into Lyttelton Harbour has left 

residents concerned. 

Peninsula Air Ltd has applied 

to the Civil Aviation Authority 

to construct a waterdrome at the 

harbour which would provide 

seaplanes with 

an area to take 

off and land.

TOMORROW IS Anzac Day when we 

remember those who never returned home 

from war. 

We profile one of those poor souls, 

Geoffrey Bargrove (page 1). 

The 17-year-old cadet was from New 

Brighton, and one of his family, Jan Bargrove, lives in Redcliffs. 

Geoffrey was on the steamer Aparima, which was torpedoed 

and sunk by a German submarine in the English Channel in 

November 1917. The torpedo struck in the early hours of the 

morning. 

There was a high chance he would have been asleep with the 

other young cadets on the vessel. They would have stood no 

chance. Young lives taken well before their time. 

So spare a thought tomorrow for young Geoffrey and the 

others who went to war and never came home.

Sumner skate park ideas sought 

SUMNER RESIDENTS will 

get the chance to contribute to 

the design of the planned skate 

park. 

The city council and Sumner 

Community Residents’ 

Association 

will hold a Bays 

Area Skate 

Park interactive 

workshop on 

May 8 from 

Andrew

Stations will be 

set up where people can either 

draw their designs for the skate 

park and adjoining village green 

space or build them out of Play- 

Doh or Plasticine. 

The vacant site at 26 Nayland 

St was approved as the location 

for the skate park by the 

Linwood-Central-Heathcote 

Community Board in 

December. 

City council head of parks 

Andrew Rutledge said it was 

important for the community to 

be involved in the design process 

so the finished park meets their 

needs. 

“The upcoming workshop is 

a creative, fun way for people to 

brainstorm ideas and make sure 

we come up with a new skate 

park that’s a safe, challenging 

and practical recreational space 

for everyone who uses it,” he 

said. 

Ideas for the skate park 

collected at the workshop will be 

incorporated by Richard Smith 

from Rich Landscapes when he 

develops the design. 

Community feedback will be 


sought on his draft design later 

this year. If needed, further 

changes can be made before it 

is presented to the Linwood- 

Central-Heathcote Community 

Board for approval in early 

2020. 

If approved, the aim would 

be for construction to get under 

way in the spring of 2020.

Fire rages, homes at risk

There has been two crashes 

within the space of a week at the

Davidson have been announced 

as The People’s Choice candidates 

for Lyttelton in October’s local 

body elections. 

Mr Fields and Mr Davidson are 

set to contest the two Lyttelton 

seats on the Banks Peninsula 

Community Board. Mr Fields is 

the board’s deputy chairman. 

The People’s Choice is a 

coalition of Labour Party and 

community independents who 

contest elections in Christchurch 

and Banks Peninsula. 

Said Mr Fields: “It was a 

huge privilege to be voted in by 

Lytteltonians last year. It has 

been a massive learning curve 

but I have worked hard and I look 

forward to getting out there and 

talking to everyone again this

a Lyttelton resident, I’m aware of 

the issues and here to serve. I see 

the community board as a bridge 

between residents and local 

government, allowing residents

Young cadet’s death ‘devastating blow’ for family

At 12 knots the steamer moved 

slowly, it had recently been released 

from troopship duties, due 

to her slow pace. 

It was early in the morning and 

the ship was about 10km southwest 

of Anvil Point, nearing the 

Isle of Wight. 

Below the deck, near the ship’s 

stern, the cadets were in their 

sleeping quarters. 

At 12.50am, the Aparima met 

her fate. 

A German submarine, UB-40, 

fired a torpedo, which slammed 

into the ship’s stern. 

It shuddered, and sank rapidly, 

in a matter of minutes. 

Geoffrey, who had only been 

on the ship for three months, 

died, along with 55 others, including 

16 cadets. There were 110 

men on board. It was one of the 

worst losses of New Zealand lives 

at sea during World War 1. 

Except for the men on duty, the 

crew woke to find chaos. 

Of the three row boats that 

were launched, one overturned 

and survivors had to cling to it for 

some time in the icy waters. Fiftyfour 

men managed to survive. 

The cadets aboard the ship 

were not paid, but were provided 

with seagoing experience on the 

working cargo steamer. 

Parents of the young men had 

paid the Union Steamship Company 

for their service. 

A year before the ship’s last 

voyage, the company had written 

to the families of cadets about 

increased dangers, given Germany’s 

decision to wage unrestricted 

warfare against merchant 

shipping. 

The company offered parents 

the option to remove their boys 

from ships. 

However, few parents chose 

that course, often because they 

did not want to be seen as letting 

their country down. 

Cadets’ families saved hard to 

send their boys to sea, in the hope 

they would be repaid once their 

sons entered the navy. 

Geoffrey’s death was a “devastating 

blow” for his family; he was 

the youngest of four children. 

As one of the last few living 

Bargroves in Christchurch, Mrs 

Bargrove has Geoffrey’s memorial 

plaque, also known as a ‘dead 

man’s penny,’ which was given to 

next of kin of every person who 

died at sea during the war. 

Mr Bargrove, was a joiner and 

woodwork teacher and made an 

ornament out of it, by placing 

it inside a small wooden ship’s 

wheel, which she continues to 

clean and maintain. 

“My husband did it years ago, 

putting the wheel around it. It’s 

beautiful. I have heard of other 

people with the pennies, but 

not anyone who has put it into a 

ship’s wheel,” she said.

The couple have three children, 

one son named Grant who had 

two boys, who will carry on the

Tomorrow will be Mrs Bargrove’s 

first Anzac Day without 

her husband, and she plans to 

spend it with family in Akaroa. 

Geoffrey was survived by his 

brother Stanley, who was a radio 

operator during the war, and two 

sisters, Violet and Grace. 

They lived in New Brighton, 

running his father Robert’s business, 

Bargroves Drapery and 

Clothing Emporium on Seaview 

Rd. 

Geoffrey attended New Brighton 

District School prior to Christ’s 

College and received prizes for 

attendance in 1912 and 1913. 


He was posthumously awarded 

the British War Medal and the 

Mercantile Marine Medal. 

He is commemorated in a 

stained glass window at The Arts 

Centre, as well as London’s Tower 

Hill Memorial for Merchant Marine 

casualties, who have no grave. 

He is incorrectly recorded there 

as Bargrove, Cadet T, instead of 

Bargrove, Cadet G. 

Coastal Ward city councillor 

David East is also a descendant of 

the Bargrove family. 

His grandfather was Stanley 

Bargrove, Geoffrey’s brother. 

“My great-grandparents were 

still alive (when Geoffrey passed), 

I think it was quite a devastating 

blow to the family. He was 

never really spoken of . . . for my 

great-grandparents, it was a bitter 

blow.” 

Cr East called the story a “dark 

and murky part of history.” 

“We never really found out a 

huge amount about the family 

. . . it was probably just how death 

was treated in those days. You 

had a period of grieving and 

mourning for someone who was 

lost, but you didn’t commemorate 

it eternally afterwards.” 

As for the Aparima, she lies 

on the seafloor, 42m deep off 

the south coast of England. It is 

possible to dive down to see the 

wreck.

the Tour of New Zealand 

off her bucket list. 

The former

Boys’ High 

School teacher 

has 27 tumours 

she calls “the 

fockers” and says 

she lives her life 

to the fullest “to 

spite them” – 

which is why she 

completed the tour. 

She didn’t cycle the full 

630km, saying she had to 

sit parts out because of the 

weather and her health. 

But she said while 

“conquering the fockers”

Miss Todd had been in 

remission, the cancer has 

come back. She hasn’t been 

able to eat properly and has 

been on an IV. 

“When I was lying on 

the IV drip, I thought what 

the hell am I doing. But I’m 

really pleased I did.” 

Her next treatment will 

be on April 30 and she 

plans to ask her doctors 

how long she has left, then 

she plans to prove them 

wrong.

THE MORNINGS and the 

evenings are certainly telling 

us that autumn is here and that 

winter is on the way. 

The strong seasonal changes in 

our part of the country are spectacular 

with the vivid colours of 

autumn leaves surrounding us. 

And it is also a time of the year 

for reflection. The Easter period 

is a significant Christian time of 

reflection and coming so close 

to Anzac Day, and the terrorist 

events of March 15 still so fresh 

in our minds, is time for us all 

to remember what is important 

in our lives – our family and our 

communities. 

I was disappointed at the negative 

response from some about 

the merging of some RSA Anzac 

Day services, on the advice of 

police. 

I would have thought that we 

would take the advice of our 

police seriously on matters such 

as security and safety. We are 

fortunate that all the Anzac Day 

events in our areas are going 

ahead and I know that they will 

all be well supported as they 

always are. 

Another local event that will 

receive widespread support is the 

recent “handing over” of 14ha of 

land in the Heathcote Valley to 

a charitable trust – Kahukura. 

The riding school started 36 years 

ago, buying the land in the valley 

from farmers. The city council 

later bought some of the land 

to improve water flow through 

Heathcote and develop the 

Ferrymead sports fields and lake. 

The owners wanted to protect 

this special piece of green space 

so have vested the land in this 

trust so that the riding school can 

continue in the future and the 

green space will be protected. 

This is a great gift for the 

environment of the valley 

and will mean that the special 

character which this space 

provides will be retained for 

future generations. 

And it’s a great reflection on 

the generosity of those involved.

Asian-Australasian Flyway 

network 

IN OCTOBER 2018 the Avon 

Heathcote Estuary (Ihutai) 

joined an exclusive list of 

wetlands making up the East 

Asian-Australasian Flyway 

network. The application was 

a two-year joint effort by the 

Department of Conservation 

and the Avon-Heathcote 

Estuary/Ihutai Trust. 

The estuary is very special, as 

it is the only Australasian wetland 

in the Flyway that is within 

a city boundary. This new status 

of the estuary presents both an 

opportunity and a responsibility 

for our city. 

The flyway’s urban setting 

means that there is a new opportunity 

to promote the estuary 

as a reason to spend time in 

Christchurch. 

People are generally aware of 

the annual arrival of 1500 or so 

godwits non-stop from Alaska 

and their departure as summer 

ends, however, godwits represent 

only about five per cent of the 

birdlife. The estuary has well 

over 100 species altogether including 

other migratory species. 

Birdwatchers – or ‘birders’ as 

devotees are sometimes called – 

can be big business. According 

to a United States Fish and 

Wildlife Service study, birders 

contributed $36 billion to the US 

economy in 2006 and birding 

is an important form of ecotourism. 

Our country is already 

well known for adventure tourism. 

Just maybe Christchurch 

can also become known for its 

stunning natural setting and the 

different eco-tourism opportunities 

right here within the city. 

Having a flyway also places a 

responsibility on the people of 

Christchurch to ensure the birds 

continue to thrive. 

Here are a few things we might 

think about: 

•Estuary birds will see a dog as 

a potential predator (ie as a wolf) 

and react accordingly, even if the 

dog is minding its own business. 

Even if they don’t fly away they 

are likely to stop feeding and be 

in a high alert state for quite a 

period of time. The bylaws are a 

bit hard to follow but it’s probably 

illegal to walk a dog on the mudflats, 

and even if it’s not it may be 

kinder to the birds to stay on the 

paths when walking a dog. 

•Drones will also be really 

scary for birds, again because 

they look like a predator. A 

permit is required to use one 

over the estuary and associated 

wetlands so do take care about 

using drones to capture nature 

videos when birds are about. 

•Shellfish gathering is becoming 

increasingly common on the 

tidal flats close to Beachville Rd. 

While there are early indications 

that the level of gathering may 

be unsustainable (and more 

work needs to be done on that), 

there is another aspect to think 

about. The south island pied 

oyster catchers and many other 

birds only feed at low tide. If we 

want them to stay in the estuary 

as a healthy population they 

really need to be left in peace 

during their mealtime. 

The estuary is a great natural 

asset of the city and a fun water 

sports playground when the 

tide is in. Let’s all recognise that 

when the tide is out, it may not 

look like much is happening, but 

its dinner-time for the birds. If 

we value them being there, and 

the granting of flyway status 

suggests we do, maybe let them 

eat in peace because they don’t 

have all day to feed.

The Neil and Liam Finn summer 2018 tour of 

Aotearoa

In the summer of 2018 Neil & Liam Finn teamed up with A 

Low Hum for a tour that took them to spots even the most 

ardent of Kiwi nomads would be hard-placed to point out 

on a map. It was a way to connect with audiences often 

neglected by touring musicians combined with an epic 

summer road-trip. ‘Where’s My Room’ was both a vacation for the Finns and their friends 

and a celebration of that li’l kiwi battler, the community hall. Nineteen shows in all, the tour 

stretched throughout January and saw Neil and Liam Finn debut live a wealth of material 

from their new collaborative album, Lightsleeper, as well as digging into the various band 

members’ envious and deep back catalogue of hits. Utilising his privileged position as 

promoter and tour manager, notorious music photographer Ian Jorgensen captured intimate 

moments of the Finns, crew and the visited communities on 35mm film. His candid 

portraiture documents the tour behind-the-scenes, showing what it’s like to be out on-theroad 

in rural New Zealand from the perspective of one of touring’s most roadworn advocates.

Treasures found under fire station 

Archaeology Week 

runs from Saturday 

to May 5. In the lead 

up to it, the New 

Zealand Archaeological 

Association is highlighting 

some of Lyttelton’s 

history 

•Fire station site 

a treasure trove of 

archaeology 

When the Lyttelton Fire 

Station on London St was 

demolished due to earthquake 

damage, archaeologists 

uncovered more than 1000 items 

of historical interest. In total, 

1991 fragments, comprising 

1312 artefacts, were found (some 

items had been broken and/or 

had pieces missing). The official 

archaeological report prepared 

by Underground Overground 

Archaeology states the site is 

“unique and unusual.” 

“The number of artefacts, 

their location when found, the 

grouping of the objects, and 

how the site was modified over 

time, including rubbish pits, 

basements, and other features – 

all this makes the fire station site 

fascinating,” said New Zealand 

Archaeological Association 

president Katharine Watson. 

“In particular, this is the first 

archaeological analysis of a site 

where aerated water was bottled 

in the Christchurch region.” 

•Sparkling water not a 

new craze 

During the latter half of the 

19th century and early decades of 

the 20th century, the fire station 

site was used for the manufacture 

of at least five different brands of 

aerated water. 

From today’s standpoint, 

combining coal and sparkling 

water may be odd, but it did 

not seem so to Charles Curtis, 

who operated as both a coal 

merchant and an aerated 

water manufacturer at the site. 

Excavation found layers of black, 

ashy material in the ground and 

coal dust scattered across the site.

day, Mr Curtis advertised his 

coal business but not his water, 

prompting speculation that 

perhaps the water business 

was a sideline and not very 

profitable. The Trade Mark Act 

of New Zealand would also 

have prevented any subsequent 

business from using the 

embossed bottles, so perhaps 

they were dumped en masse

a classic example of the mysteries 

that crop up in heritage research, 

where we have to make our best 

guess and remain open to more

In all, 291 aerated water bottles 

were recovered. Along with 

Curtis and Co, the other London 

St producers were J.B. Milsom 

(who manufactured on the site 

from 1885 to an unknown date), 

N.C. Schumacher (1891-1915), N. 

Seaforth (1915-unknown), and 

T.W. Firmin (1920-1942). 

In addition, there were bottles 

from five producers over the 

hill in Christchurch – Ballin 

Brothers (1885-1980s), Phil 

Kortegast (1930s-plus), Lister and 

Co (1894-1906), H. Mace and Co 

(1902-plus), and Were Brothers 

(1911-plus).

“unknowingly” selling 

Mace’s bottles to a West 

Coast company. The 

following year, a report 

in The Star suggested 

Mr Schumacher again 

had issues over the provenance of 

bottles, this time with J.B. Milson 

of Lyttelton. 

•Not exactly ‘temperance 

town’ 

Lest all this evidence of water 

drinking prompts questions 

about Lyttelton’s beer drinking 

credentials, the fire station site 

also contained a large number 

of early black beer bottles. “They 

are called ‘black’ but are actually 

a dark olive green in colour,” 

said Heritage New Zealand 

archaeologist Gwen Jackson. 

The bottles were mostly 

dumped on-site in the 1860s 

and early 1870s, which would 

correspond to the period when 

the Rising Sun Hotel operated at 

the north-east corner. 

Other bottles from a similar 

period may have contained 

whisky, gin, rum and other 

spirits.

Hunger for titles pays off

Estella Hungerford won her 

first open women’s South Island 

championships title in Dunedin 

over the weekend. 

Estella, 17, posted an 11.6 

point total in the open division 

final for a comfortable victory 

over the all-South Island cast of 

surfers at St Clair Beach. 

She also competed in the 

under-18 final on Sunday, where 

a score of 5.9 saw her finish 

third. 

“In 18s it didn’t go my way 

earlier in the day. I had one good 

ride in that final but couldn’t 

find a back-up and lost,” she 

said. 

“I wanted to win the 18s more 

but had a bad heat so that fired 

THE SELWYN Futures Golf Hub

In the longboard division, 

Wallis was forced to settle for 

second after being outclassed 

by defending champion Hugh 

Ritchie, who finished with an 

impressive 11.6. 

Meanwhile, the women’s 

longboard division was taken 

out by Donna Henderson with 

an 11.7. Her daughter Ava 

Henderson finished second in 

well as subsidised coaching and 

off-peak playing rights. 

Dave Williams and his two 

sons, Benji, 8, and Joshua, 5, 

became members of the hub after 

starting off at Wakatipu. 

“I’m time poor, I’d rather go 

out and play with my boys. To 

be playing golf with my boys is 

a bit of a dream and who knows 

when it will end because that’s up 

to them, but they’re sports mad,” 

Mr Williams said. 

He said another positive of the 

concept is meeting and playing 

golf with other families. 

“At this age, we aren’t expecting 

Tiger Woods . . . so as long as it’s 

fun and the kids are enjoying 

the under-20 girls division final. 

There was also success for 

Blair Cooke, who won the standup 

paddleboard with a score of 

9.9 in the final. 

The three-day event was 

hosted by South Coast 

Boardriders and was dual 

sanctioned by Surfing New 

Zealand and the South Island 

Surfing Association. 

Almost 200 entries were 

received for the event, with the 

majority coming from South 

Island surfers eager to contest 

the southern-most nationally 

sanctioned event. 

Surfers will now turn their 

attention to the Exit Surf men’s 

Canterbury championships at 

Gore Bay this weekend.

A SECOND drubbing in as 

many weeks means Sumner will 

be looking for their first win of 

season when they travel 

to Belfast on Saturday. 

On Good Friday, 

Sumner capitulated 

in their 22-76 loss to 

Linwood at Linfield 

Park. The result comes 

on the back of a 26-83 

loss to Marist Albion a 

week earlier. However, 

the results have not been 

a complete loss for the 

side, which gained fourtry 

bonus points in both games. 

In the loss to Marist, 

Sumner missed 46 tackles. But 

coach Martin Dodgson was 

impressed with his side’s initial 

improvement against Linwood, 

in which they missed 12 tackles 

to trail 10-26 at halftime. 

“It’s still wasn’t great, but was a 

marked improvement on the last 

week,” said Dodgson. 

However, the floodgates 

opened in the final stages of the 

match, which saw Sumner miss 

20 tackles in the final 18min.

Mercedes-Benz CLS a real head-turner

I DOUBT I’ll ever know the real 

answer. Why, after many years, 

has Mercedes-Benz gone back to 

a straight six-cylinder engine in 

one of its models? 

It goes like this – for as long as 

I can remember its mainstream 

engines were straight-sixes, 

then in the late 90s the company 

reconfigured them to a V6-type 

that were highly successful, now 

the new CLS-Class arrives with 

an engine that has gone full 

circle – an inline six. 

I can work out the answer to a 

certain extent, and no-one knows 

better than me – most of the 

cars I have ever owned have had 

straight-six engines – they are 

renowned for their smoothness 

and refinement, and I guess that’s 

where Mercedes-Benz is coming 

from, the CLS450 is the epitome 

of sophistication and elegance. 

The CLS is classed as a coupe, 

to me it’s pretty much a coupetype 

sedan with its four doors 

yet definite sloping rear which 

incorporates a deep underliftback 

boot. 

The evaluation car was painted 

black, and it captured attention 

from everyone who gazed at 

it, it’s a stunning looker and 

measures up in the area of 

performance. Mercedes-Benz 

label it a mild hybrid, there 

are engineering aspects which 

gather, store and deliver energy; 

however, for me I still see it as a 

traditional power plant, and that 

fabulous six-potter is amazing 

with its outputs and polish on 

delivery. 

Mercedes-Benz rates the 

turbocharged 3-litre unit 

at 270kW and 500Nm of 

torque, both outputs realised 

at usable points in the rev 

band – 5500rpm and 1600rpm 

respectively. Drive from the 

engine, and small electric motor, 

is channelled through a ninespeed 

automatic gearbox to all 

four wheels, yes the CLS in this 

form utilises the 4Matic system 

carried across many other 

models from this stable. 

Put simply, in the CLS’ case, 

the 4Matic system is a device to 

enhance grip levels on sealed 

surfaces, and that characterises 

the model, it is a slick open road 

charger with handling ability 

to address the power outputs. 

Of course, there are several 

drive modes, and some of those 

are structured so that the high 

country roads can be tackled 

with speed and dignity. 

MERCEDES-BENZ CLS450: Classed as a coupe but with the 

benefit of four doors. 

I took the test car on a short 

Port Hills loop and thoroughly 

enjoyed its ride and handling 

balance. 

The CLS is low (1.4m), as a 

consequence there is little body 

movement over the suspension, 

and if you add in the quality of 

the air suspension elements there 

is little doubt the CLS is made for 

those quick highway journeys. 

Huge low profile 20in Good Year 

Eagle tyres add to the equation, 

grip is high and performance 

barely equalled in a car of this 

type. 

In terms of figures, the CLS 

450 will accelerate to 100km/h 

in 4.8sec and will make a 

highway overtake in 3.8sec, it 

simply scorches through the 

acceleration process, and there’s 

no point where the engine stops 

giving, it is forceful, yet you 

would never know it is working 

hard, it simply delivers without 

sound. 

As honest as it is with its 

response, the engineers have also 

developed the driveline with fuel 

economy in mind. Mercedes- 

Benz claims an 8.7-litre per 

100km (32mpg) combined cycle 

average. That sits well with the 

9.4l/100km (30mpg) figure 

showing constantly on the dash 

display graphics. At 100km/h it 

is sipping fuel at just 5l/100km 

(56mpg) with the engine turning 

over amazingly low at 1250rpm. 

All of these computations add 

up to a beautifully engineered 

vehicle, it also stands out for its 

dignity and all of those values 

you look to Mercedes-Benz for. 

The CLS 450 has a magnitude 

of safety kit, and that’s evident 

every time you drive it. There are

seem like a big outlay, I’d happily 

pay that amount for such a true 

luxury car, one which delivers 

so much in terms of overall 

performance. 

Every time now I get in the 

Kiddie-family Toyota I’m looking 

for the six-cylinder smoothness 

that also makes the CLS so 

desirable. It’s not quite there in 

the Toyota, but it is certainly an 

indication of what the inline-six 

can deliver.
