High Force Waterfall
Starting in the scenic Durham Dales, visitors to the
area will certainly have a superb choice of walks,
trails and treks varying in degrees of difficulty and
all delivering soul-satisfying views. To the north
of the area is Derwent Reservoir and an easy walk
taking in the stunning scenery and wildlife. Start at
Pow Hill Country Park and finish three and a half
miles later with a picnic at Millshield.
Located to the west of the Durham Dales is one
of the country's most spectacular waterfalls, High
Force, where the River Tees powerfully plunges
down a 21 metre drop. Combine this with Lower
Force and you have a five mile circular walk
covering mixed terrain of open moorland, rocky
landscapes and forests.
The Durham Heritage Coast from Hartlepool and
Sunderland is 11 miles long but you can take
shorter, circular walks combined with a visit to
one of the villages along the route. Mostly made
from magnesium limestone coastal grasslands,
ramblers can expect to see bluebells, snowdrops
and orchids, wild garlic, insects, skylarks and
lapwings. The coastal walk is home to deer, foxes,
badgers and bats and with the quality of the sea
water improving since the closure of the coal pits,
you may even see a basking shark or seal in the
summer months.
