How Do You Know When to Paint
a Scratch or Just Buff It Out?
Notary
So, you’ve got an unsightly scratch on
your beautiful automobile? What should
you do? Should you ask the repair facility
to paint it or buff it out? The rule of
thumb is if you can catch your fingernail
in the scratch, then you need to paint it.
If not, it may buff out.
What did develop in the generations
of the Baby Boomers is the presence
of many educational, financial, and
social opportunities. Schools were
no longer one room buildings with
and now, Baby Boomers are starting
to shift their interests. But with
change of life comes change of life
plans, and many have embraced
them with open arms.
As their families grew, some having
three and four children, many people
bought bigger houses to accommodate
all the young feet running
around. But, those feet aren’t young
anymore. So Baby Boomers are now
looking to downsize into one or two
Older generations were interested in
working until the day they retired. At
that point, they wanted to hang up
Living healthy hasn’t always been an
interest of the Baby Boomers. This
is the generation that is responsible
for the rise of McDonald’s and Burger
King, microwavable TV dinners, and
snacks on the run. They’ve also adopted
healthier eating habits. Bottled
water and natural foods are now the
focus throughout the day.
Many of the Baby Boomers grew
up with parents who were against
divorce. They would gut it out if a
marriage didn’t work because they
thought more of the kids than they
did of themselves.
The Baby Boomer generation did not
hesitate to call their marriage what it
was. If it was over, then it was over
and they weren’t afraid to walk away.
They look online and go to meet-up
groups. Dating is still a huge trend for
Baby Boomers, who haven’t given up
on finding love.
simply aren’t true. The idea that the
youth of today are paying for an older
generation’s huge pension plans is
not true. The idea that the older generation
is sitting on a fortune is also
From conserve to indulge to conserve
again. A shift in focus has certainly
taken place. They want to stay forever
young and if they can’t do that,
then they are determined to always
feel young.
Live Like the Rich and Famous…
Without Their Bank Accounts
An overseas retirement offers so
many benefits…an escape from bitterly
cold winters, affordable healthcare,
a wider range of real estate options,
and a more comfortable, less
stressful lifestyle.
In the right locations around the world,
what would be an unremarkable budget
in the U.S. or Canada, will deliver
Beverly Hills-style opulence. We
have homed in on retirement havens
worldwide where a better bang for
your buck lets you upgrade your lifestyle
to luxury levels.
swings, and massive over-the-top villas.
But, you can stay in Bali and enjoy
all of the same sights, experience
all of the same beaches, and even
indulge in a private villa for a fraction
of the cost.
“Private villas perched high on clifftops
or with ocean-front views are
easy to find with a quick search, and
you could hire a local driver to tour
the popular places from around $45
a day.
area on the Pacific.
Here you can get a sunrise instead of
sunset because it’s on the east side
of the peninsula. The beach is an
easy walk from town, where you’ll find
a unique freshwater waterfall right on
the sand, with pools for soaking and
swimming.
“Since Montezuma is off the beaten
path, there are still good real estate
rental deals to be found,” says Kathleen.
“You can find a two-bedroom
place to rent for anywhere from $500
to $1,000 per month. “Without a
car, and living a modest retirement,
a couple could live on $1,500 to
$1,700 month.”
riage rides.
A couple could live well in this artsrich
tourist town on a budget of
$3,065 a month, though on less elsewhere
in Portugal.
Columbia
Cartagena is one of Colombia’s most
popular tourist destinations thanks
to its interesting history, excellent cuisine,
and amazing shopping. Located
on the Caribbean coast, 256 miles
from the Panama Canal, Cartagena is
a major seaport for both commercial
shipping and vacationers on cruise
ships.
Here are five places where retirees
can live like the rich and famous,
without their bank balance, in Italy,
Bali, Costa Rica, Portugal, and Colombia.
Italy
The sophisticated Italian lifestyle attracts
the rich and famous droves—
including none other than George
Clooney and his wife Amal in Lake
Como. Jonny Depp, Sir Richard Branson,
and Leonardo DiCaprio all make
Italy their home for part of the year,
too.
With superstars like these, many retirees
wrongly assume that Italy, with
its rich history and culture, is outside
their budget. However, in the likes
of Arezzo, life truly is beautiful and affordable.
It is easy to see why Benigni
used his hometown as the set of his
Oscar-winning film Life is Beautiful.
“For all its quality of life and location,
the surprise is that Arezzo isn’t more
“discovered” and higher priced. Being
at the eastern fringe of Tuscany,
it has stayed off the radar, providing
one of Tuscany’s real gems.” Here, a
Hollywood budget is not required to
live the good life—a couple could live
well on a monthly budget of $1,524.
Bali
“In 2018, Kim Kardashian, John Legend,
and Pink, just to name a few, all
chose Bali as their vacation destination.
Instagram was overflowing with
photos of temples, beaches, jungle
“Even better, hire a car and tour the
island. Follow the coastal road, pass
through the black sandy beaches of
Amed, and frolic in the balmy waters
of Lovina. Along the way uncover ancient
rice field terraces and temples
with significant Balinese history.”
The tropical climate of Bali has enticed
retirees for many years and it
offers a relaxed, simple lifestyle with
world-class dining at very affordable
prices. Here, retirees can enjoy
a comfortable life with a budget of
around $1,150 a month, push that to
$1,800 and you will really be enjoying
the high life.
Costa Rica
Costa Rica has long been a much
sought after vacation destination
but it’s also become a popular spot
for longer stays. Super Bowl star Tom
Brady and his wife, model Gisele, are
regular visitors to Costa Rica’s Pacific
coast.
On the far tip of the Nicoya Peninsula,
the fishing village of Montezuma is
great for those looking for a laid back
destination. There is no major development
and the town center has just
a few restaurants, hotels, and shops.
The roads on the way to this part of
Costa Rica can be rough, especially
in rainy season from May to November,
but it’s well worth visiting this
“Without a car, and living a modest
retirement, a couple could live on
$1,500 to $1,700 month.”
Portugal
Portugal attracts the crème de la
crème of A-listers, from Scarlett Johansson
and Bryan Adams to Sting
and Michael Bolton. But it’s the favorite
summer retreat of the former royal
family, Sintra, that stole Madonna’s
heart.
Sintra is located northwest of Lisbon,
perched on a sometimes mist-covered
hilltop surrounded by a pine
tree-filled national forest. It is packed
with opportunities to explore—from
the gothic-style National Palace in
the center of town to the ramparts of
the 8th-century Moorish castle.
Perhaps the town’s standout attraction
is the pastel-painted Palace of
Pena, a 19th-century Romanticist
marvel sitting high atop Sintra’s hill,
surrounded by pine forests—the pink
turrets, daffodil-yellow tower, and
monstrous gargoyles are incredibly
striking. A glorious example of
19th-century Romanesque Revival
architecture, the Palace of Pena is
recognizable for miles due to its location
on one of the highest points in
Sintra and its vivid colors.
Explore the palace’s lovely park, with
walking paths, hiking trails, moss-covered
rocks, and meandering streams.
Visit the farm and stables, where you
can arrange for horse, pony, or car-
And the chances of rubbing shoulders
with the glitterati are on the rise
here as more and more discover the
delights of city—just like Mick Jagger
and Justin Bieber have.
Although it gained its independence
from Spain on November 11, 1811,
Cartagena retains much of the original,
colonial architecture. As you walk
through the old city, you will find narrow,
cobblestone streets, old churches,
museums, and restaurants, and
shops housed in colonial buildings,
making you feel like you have stepped
back in time.
Oozing history and romance, Cartagena’s
residents like to stroll along
the wall, warmed by ocean breezes,
to take in the breath-taking views and
listen to the waves crashing to the
shore close by.
There is a large expat community who
enjoy the many benefits of retiring in
Cartagena. There are many recreational
activities including boating,
swimming, bicycle riding around the
city, and playing golf. It is easy to lead
an active, vital life in Cartagena.
Shopping is exceptional in Cartagena.
Upscale boutiques, local artisanal
shops, and sidewalk vendors provide
a variety of options for every budget.
Emeralds are an especially popular
item. Despite the glamour, a couple
can live well here on a monthly budget
of $1,615 to $2,015, depending
on the lifestyle they choose.
You can’t blame a dog for trying—and
certainly not when they sound super
cute. “My significant other and I had
been trying to teach our dog to make
less of a mess in our house—specifically,
to not pull toilet paper off the
roll.”
“We weren’t sure we’d been making
any headway until one day we came
home to find that while we’d been
out, about two feet of toilet paper
had been unrolled…and then somehow
rolled back up sloppily. All I can
imagine is her playing with it happily,
hearing us at the door, thinking, ‘Oh,
crap!’ and trying to fix her mess. It
was actually pretty impressive.”
A Very Punctual Puppy
“My dog, Libby, rides with me to pick
up my kids from school, and she
knows exactly what time we leave.
The kids had an after-school activity
so I needed to pick them up an
hour later than usual. When we didn’t
leave at the normal time, she started
whining at me.
5687 NC 211 Hwy · West End, NC 27376
Then barking. Then she swatted my
shoe with her paw, hard, so it flew
through the air and hit me. She threw
my shoe at me!” Libby sounds like a
Real Dogwife of New Jersey.
Egg On Your Face
While some cats like to play with
stuffed mice, catnip, and jingle balls.
“My cat likes to play with plastic Easter
eggs. She picks a half up in her
mouth, and trots around with it, yowling
all the while, with the egg functioning
as an amplifier. One year we
got the kids these big eggs … and
eventually, she found one and tried
to play with it the same way.”
Sadly for this cat, it didn’t work out.
“When she picked it up, it flipped up
over face and covered her eyes. She
panicked and started running around,
clanging into the baseboard heaters
and whatever else. It was hysterical!
She finally dropped it and stood there
dazed. And [then she] picked up the
egg and did it again. And again. And
again.” When will they learn?
Here’s another cat who didn’t learn
from her mistakes.”One day, after we
had gotten seven or eight inches of
snow, my cat decided to be a brave
adventurer and dash out of the door.”
“She knows she absolutely hates
snow, but always does this. …
She runs out, jumps into the snow,
and disappears. I’m sitting there
letting her learn her lesson. I hear a
muffled meow-scream as she very,
very slowly lifts her head up above
the snow. Her mouth stays wide open
HOURS
… and [she] continues to stare at me
doing this meow until I came and
The kitty’s owner wrote that she did
the same exact thing again an hour
later. Too good.
A Sticky Situation
Ever buy your pet an expensive toy
and they still choose to play with a
paper bag instead? “My cat once discovered
a roll of fly tape in a kitchen
cabinet. Not sure how he managed it,
but we walked in the door to find he
had effectively hog-tied himself in the
middle of the floor.
A big fat cat with long gray fur sticking
out in giant tufts between the strips
of tacky, gooey tape he’d managed to
wind all over himself, crimping his tail
in two places.”
“We felt horrible for laughing, but it
was such a ridiculous scene that we
were still cracking up even while cutting
the tape away and checking to
make sure his tail wasn’t broken. (He
was a little traumatized and temporarily
looked like a case of Dr. Jekyll
and Mr. Hyde with many random bald
spots, but otherwise perfectly fine).”
