Orland Fire recognizing its
history for 50th anniversary
Dedication paves
the way for open
house in July
Throughout the past 50
years, the Orland Fire Protection
District has grown
from a volunteer fire department
into a full-time
district with high accolades.
And with its 50th anniversary
upon it, Orland
Fire is focusing on its beginnings.
To kick off its 50th anniversary
festivities, Orland
Fire hosted a dedication
ceremony April 27, honoring
past members.
“Each vehicle has a
plaque on the side, and our
goal here is to remember
our history,” Fire Chief
Michael Schofield said prior
to the event. “We have
so many new kids coming
on board, and they have no
idea where we came from,
and it’s important to teach
them and remember these
people.”
Several past members
were honored April 27.
Among them was Art
Granat Jr., who accepted
the honor for himself and
his late father, Art Granat
Sr. OFPD dedicated its
newest fire truck to the father
and son.
“We’re starting with the
Granat family,” Schofield
said. “They were a huge
part of the Village of Orland
Park community and
the fire district.”
The Granat family
helped to build the foundation
of the department.
In fact, Granat Sr. was
the first elected fire chief
when it was a volunteer
department, which was “a
big deal back then,” his
son said. Granat Sr. was
also the first chief for the
then newly established
Orland Fire and was hired
as the first full-time firefighter.
“I followed in my dad’s
footsteps,” Granat Jr. said
prior to the event.
Granat Jr., who was born
and raised in Orland Park,
spent a lot of time at the
station as a child and eventually
joined the department
as a volunteer during
his father’s tenure. He was
also a charter member of
the local union. He spent
38 years as a firefighter
for Orland Fire, retired in
2006 and moved to Wisconsin.
“It’s a big change from
when I was here,” he said.
During the ceremony,
Schofield shared the impact
that the Granats had
on the formation of Orland
Fire, noting Granat Sr.’s
dedication to the community
and the various
aspects that he had to balance
in transitioning from
a volunteer operation to a
full-time employment operation
in 1974.
“During Art’s time as
the fire chief, the department
really soared,” Schofield
said.
Schofield recognized
Granat Jr. for his dedication
to the fire department
during the ceremony, as
well.
“Artie worked hard as a
volunteer and had the same
passion and the same drive
not only for the department
but the entire community,”
Schofield said.
Granat Jr. said he was
humbled by the dedication.
“It’s a very humbling
honor for them to recognize
my father and myself
for what we’ve done, but
it’s not just him or me that
did this,” Granat Jr. said.
“Like they say, ‘it takes a
village.’”
Several community
members close to the
Granat family showed
their support at the event.
