coming to the Seven Lakes area in
the near future.
Pinnacle Storage that recently
opened for business, Domino’s Pizza,
With the widening of Hwy #211 I’m
for new businesses that will
take advantage of this highway opportunity
and the ever changing demographical
make-up in the area.
The “Avenue Of Flags” will be unfurled
are approximately 40 new company
Community Blues @ 9.4 %
It’s community over competition that
connect Moore County’s three breweries,
Pinehurst Brewing Co., Southern
Pines Brewing Co. and Railhouse
Brewery.
Craft beer collaborations typically
inspire creative flavors and methods,
which is certainly the case with
the aptly-named Community Blues,
a Fruited Pastry Weisse,made with
a little local love … and whole lot of
dough-nuts.
“The philosophy behind collaboration
is utilizing something from the community,”
says Eric Mitchell, Pinehurst
Brewing Co’s head brewer. It was the
suggestion of Southern Pines’ Micah
Niebauer to showcase an area staple,
Granny’s Donuts.
The Aberdeen bakery has been an
institution for nearly 40 years and it
was their blueberry cake variety that
ultimately provided the base for their
brew – 50 pounds of them to be exact.
With Southern Pines taking the
lead on the recipe, Mitchell and his
team, along with Railhouse brewers,
all contributed modifications resulting
in the final product, a hugely flavorful
purple-hued beer that packs
fairly powerful punch at 9.4% ABV.
This marks the first collaboration between
the three breweries and Mitchell
hopes there will be more in the
future. “It’s always fun when everyone
gets together because everyone
does things a different way and you
have to find a middle ground.”
Community Blues is currently on tap
at Pinehurst Brewing Company and
Southern Pines Brewing Company.
day and Saturday nights until 1 am.
Pizza lovers in Seven Lakes are about
to see a whole new slice of Domino’s.
Domino’s Franchisee, Gerald Rhodes,
CEO of GBR Pizza which owns 18
stores in North Carolina including
Olmstead Village, Aberdeen and
Whispering Pines is now building the
new store concept in Seven Lakes.
The new store will be located next
door to Pack Ship “N” Moore on the
West side of Seven Lakes.
According to Storm Rutcho, Vice President,
Store Operations & Development,
“our company has been looking
at Seven Lakes for about 10 years.
With the demographics now shifting
to a younger population we have decided
to develop a store there.”
“Domino’s has been shifting strategies
to smaller areas and the older
populace are not dining with as much
pizza as in earlier years. This was
a major factor for our company to
develop the Seven Lakes area.”
I spoke to Danielle Bulger, Program
Leader - Public Relations at Domino’s
corporate offices and she confirmed
that a new “Theatre Style” Domino’s
Pizza store will be opening soon
which will feature both take out and They will be offering the full Domino’s
delivery.
We File menu including pizza, chicken, sandwiches
from Philly cheese steak to
The Domino’s Pizza “theater” is a Insurance new Mediterranean veggie, pasta entrées,
store concept that will feature limited side dishes rounding out with deserts
so guests Located can watch Across their pizza The being Street From Food Lion
Wi-Fi and USB Thursday 10:30 to midnight and Fri-
For ultimate convenience you can
simply go to Domino’s.com to order
online and receive awards for either
pick up or delivery or call the store.
According to Storm, “construction is
underway and he expects the location
to be open in late August to early
September.”
They will be hiring Management from
within and will also be hiring locally.
Since the stores are open by local individuals
they have already indicated
that they are very community oriented
helping fundraisers and giving back
to the community. They expressed
interest in joining the Kiwanis as well
as the Seven Lakes Business Guild.
Domino’s has dipped its toes into the
world of urban renewal. “We don’t
want to lose any great-tasting pizza
to a pothole, ruining a wonderful
meal,” a press release fretted.
In the “Paving for Pizza” program,
Domino’s handed over cash to
municipalities across America, cities
arranged for workers to repair cracks
and potholes. Cities and small towns
in every state benefited from $5,000
to be used for road repairs.
More than 137,000 requests poured
in as residents of towns across the
country asked the brand to come fix
local road nightmares. Stay tuned,
the pizza giant may continue the
program, here in Seven Lakes
With no start-up capital and little
such a venture, we relied heavily
In an effort to raise additional funds necessary to repair the roads
throughout the Seven Lakes business area. The Business Guild
is seeking financial help through donations by all residents of the
community whom utilize these roads on a daily basis.
Without community support, the roads will continue to deteriorate to a
deplorable condition due to limited funds raised by the Business Guild.
The Business Guild’s only income to repair the road structure is derived
from several events held throughout the year including the Meet
The Merchants, Chili Cookoff and McKenzies Mill concert.
We continue to operate with an extreme limitation of proceeds.
You don’t need to go to a fancy gym
to “turn back the clock.”
Despite all the anti-aging products
pushed on us, it’s inevitable that we
will get older. Before you get started,
it’s essential to get checked out by
your doctor. However, some of the
things we lose as we age can actually
be prevented, including:
Strength and Muscle: Some experts
have suggested that muscle mass
declines about 1 percent each year
from age 30. Strength training has
incredible benefits for everyone,
but especially for seniors. Experts
believe that “resistance exercise
may forestall declines in strength
and muscle mass for decades.” Lift
weights for all muscle groups (lower
body, chest, back, shoulders, biceps,
triceps, and abs) at least 2
non-consecutive days each week.
Cardio Endurance: As we age, we
often lose aerobic fitness and experts
believe this contributes to reduced
mobility in daily life. The National
Institute on Aging recommends seniors
shoot for 30 minutes of cardio
exercise each day. Choose an activity
you enjoy and something that’s accessible
such as walking, swimming,
biking, tennis, etc.
Flexibility and Balance: Joints change
with age and this can lead to stiffness,
decreased range of motion and
more injuries.
Balance: Exercise can help you avoid
injuries from falls and keep you independent
and mobile. It’s important to
stay flexible as you get older, so plan
on stretching after your workouts or
incorporate yoga into your routine. Be
sure your muscles are warm when
you stretch, either from working out
or after getting out of a hot bath or
shower. In addition to a basic flexibility
workout, be sure to incorporate balance
exercises into your day.
The good news is that the loss of
strength, endurance, flexibility, and
balance aren’t inevitable. The National
Institute on Aging believes that,
“when older people lose their ability
to do things on their own, it doesn’t
happen just because they have aged.
More likely it is because they have
become inactive.”
Some exercises are unsafe for almost
everyone over 60. Beware of incorrect
Seniors Are Turning
Back The Clock
advice. Here are the ones to avoid
even if a therapist recommends
these exercises always see a physician
specialist when in doubt.
Crunches, leg presses, running (65
years old isn’t the time to start), chest
presses and deadlifts.
The first time George did leg presses,
he felt uncomfortable. The second
time, he felt shooting pains down
both legs. Soon his sciatica was
so severe he needed a series of
pain-numbing epidural injections just
to move around again. Months later,
he was still limping. When I told this
story to Alexandra Smith, a trainer in
Los Angeles who works primarily with
older clients, she said it happens a
lot.
“I’ve had many clients whose doctors
and therapists gave them things that
are completely detrimental to their
well-being,” she says.
It’s Never too Late..No matter how
old you are, exercise can improve
your quality of life and you don’t have
to spend a lot of time doing it to see
and feel improvements.
Remember that any activity is better
than none, so start with something
easy and enjoyable. You’ll find that,
over time, exercise can help you improve
your quality of life and help you
age gracefully.
Tri-City Development located in Rockingham
which have extensive Real
Estate holdings throughout Moore
and Richmond Counties have added
an additional property under contract
to serve the Seven Lakes, Foxfire and
adjacent communities.
Due Diligence Of Phase I Of New
Commercial Development Is Underway
We expect the parcels will be a mix
of convenience and service-oriented
retail or office uses. The uses would
be first-class establishments (probably
national recognized brands) that
service the needs of the community.
The company is a full service commercial
real estate firm dedicated to
helping owners, users, developers,
and investors navigate the commercial
real estate market.
The company was founded in 1964
by founder and sole proprietor,
Claude F. Smith, a life long native of
Richmond County, North Carolina.
Since its inception, the company has
constructed and owns a vast array
of shopping centers, apartments,
homes, clubhouses, golf courses,
office buildings and commercial retail
buildings for most major tenants.
I spoke with Neil Robinett, C.E.O. of
the firm, “We are planning three outlots
that will front Hwy. 211. Each will
be approximately 1.8 – 2.0 acres in
size and will have +/- 200’ of frontage
on Hwy. 211.” Neil received his Masters
of Real Estate Development from
Clemson University. “We are excited
for an opportunity to bring a firstclass
commercial development that
adds needed neighborhood commercial
and service-oriented uses to the
growing community of Seven Lakes.”
Approximately 35 of the 50 acre parcel,
located at 4691 NC Hwy 211, adjacent
to the intersection of Love
adjacent to West End Elementary is
being rezoned to Commercial use.
The company is currently pursuing
a wide range of well established,
first class retail, restaurant, business
medical office users that would serve
as neighborhood convenience and
service providers.
“We are local developers and owners.
We’ve been in business since
the 1960’s and have always been
long-term holders of our real estate
projects. Building community relationships
is important to us, because
we will be here in Moore County for
a long time to come. Our goal is to
deliver a project that is a high-quality
asset that Seven Lakes can be proud
of as a part of their community.”
Tri-City being a local community
oriented firm are cognizant about the
views from adjacent property owners
and are addressing their concerns.
Our rezoning, if approved, will allow
for development of the three out parcels.
for development of any larger com-
Their determination and conservative
investing combined with the commitments
to professional accountability
and detail-oriented teamwork create
the foundation of an innovative and
relentless desire to create and maintain
lasting assets that stand out
as extraordinary examples of sound
investments, community defining
projects and represent a sense of
pride.
The company acting as owner, developer,
and construction manager,
has completed innumerable projects
which included the installation
of construction of over 10 million
square feet of property.
you can take your vehicle to any repair
facility of your choosing, regardless
of what your insurance company
tells you? You may find your insurance
company steering you toward
one facility over others.
Insurance companies often have an
agreement with certain facilities in
order to save the insurance companies
money. That is not always in
the interest of the best quality repair.
Don’t be forced into taking your vehicle
where you are not comfortable.
Ultimately, the choice is yours.
Sometimes fortunes earned over
lifetimes are squandered in a few
short years: the daughter who magnanimously
bestowed her entire
On the other side of the coin, estate
planning sometimes forces parents to
take a stand against certain problematic
behaviors in their adult kids.
Interestingly, one of the biggest problems
affluent parents try to discourage
is reckless consumption.
Just as the wild spender and chronic
loafer present challenges to parents,
so also does the child or grandchild
with obvious self-destructive behavior.
This most often takes the form of alcohol
or drug abuse, criminal behavior,
or frank mental illness.
As a parent, you know how important
it is to talk to your children about sex,
drugs, alcohol and other uncomfortable
topics.
But as we age, we seem to become
more reluctant to talk about such
subjects as money and the distribution
of our belongings.
As uncomfortable as it may be, these
discussions are some of the most
important talks we’ll ever have with
our children.
Kids need to know what they can
expect, even if it’s bad news. If you
don’t discuss the stipulations of the
wills or trusts before your death, your
inheritors will be left with the difficult
task of interpreting your meaning and
intent on their own.
This will only add confusion to the
grief and loss they’re already experiencing.
You can only save them this pain by
openly discussing your estate plans
with your heirs.
Most parents prefer to divide their
assets equally among their kids for a
number of reasons.
They don’t want to show favoritism;
they love them equally; or they don’t
want there to be bad blood among
the kids once they’re gone.
If you can visualize your kids wrestling
over the Jaguar keys in the driveway
of the funeral home, sell it and decide
how to split the proceeds.
Don’t get stuck trying to make sure
everyone’s perfectly happy.
Lay it out for them from the beginning:
“It may not be what each of you
thinks is fair, but it’s the way I feel
most comfortable dealing with the
situation.
If parents don’t have that kind of
dialogue, some kids hang out waiting
for the big jackpot.
The Greatest Generation
A few years ago Tom Brokaw aptly
coined the title of this article for all of
those men and women that served in
WWII.
I am reminded every Memorial Day
about my father who served in the
Korean War and my father-in-law who
enlisted in the armed forces at the
ripe old age of 17, to serve in WWII.
My father-in-law, “Chuck” Levinger
quit high school as many did and got
permission to enlist in the Marine
Corps with his buddies in Pittsburgh,
PA.
talk about the heat, constant exhaustion
and watching as the kamikaze
airplanes from Japan attacked with
“wave after wave on our fleet of ships
offshore.”
When he got home he went to college
outside of Pittsburgh on the new GI
Bill and worked at US Steel at nights
to get his BA degree. He went a few
years later to Pitt and earned his
Masters degree.
He would not even allow a SONY TV in
his house nor anything else made in
Japan.
Military
Military
Appreciation Day
Day
He went on and endured USMC boot
camp at Parris Island, SC in the summer
of 1943. He never went into the
gory details of his service other than
a few tidbits after a few scotches of
his time spent on Okinawa.
The marines came ashore and
“stormed the beaches” on April 1st
and he enjoyed his 19th birthday
while on duty.
He became a corporal and earned
about “$70 bucks a month.” He did
As my husband, Rick always reminds
me, if he knew that the Lexus he purchased
a few years before he passed
away, was actually a Toyota he would
be “rolling in his grave.”
Remember to take a few minutes
between the hamburgers and beer
to reflect on all of those brave souls
that served in the armed forces from
WWI to the current war on terrorism
in Afghanistan.
You can’t blame a dog for trying—and
certainly not when they sound super
cute. “My significant other and I had
been trying to teach our dog to make
less of a mess in our house—specifically,
to not pull toilet paper off the
roll.”
“We weren’t sure we’d been making
any headway until one day we came
home to find that while we’d been
out, about two feet of toilet paper
had been unrolled…and then somehow
rolled back up sloppily. All I can
imagine is her playing with it happily,
hearing us at the door, thinking, ‘Oh,
crap!’ and trying to fix her mess. It
was actually pretty impressive.”
A Very Punctual Puppy
“My dog, Libby, rides with me to pick
up my kids from school, and she
knows exactly what time we leave.
The kids had an after-school activity
so I needed to pick them up an
hour later than usual. When we didn’t
leave at the normal time, she started
whining at me.
5687 NC 211 Hwy · West End, NC 27376
Then barking. Then she swatted my
shoe with her paw, hard, so it flew
through the air and hit me. She threw
my shoe at me!” Libby sounds like a
Real Dogwife of New Jersey.
Egg On Your Face
While some cats like to play with
stuffed mice, catnip, and jingle balls.
“My cat likes to play with plastic Easter
eggs. She picks a half up in her
mouth, and trots around with it, yowling
all the while, with the egg functioning
as an amplifier. One year we
got the kids these big eggs … and
eventually, she found one and tried
to play with it the same way.”
Sadly for this cat, it didn’t work out.
“When she picked it up, it flipped up
over face and covered her eyes. She
panicked and started running around,
clanging into the baseboard heaters
and whatever else. It was hysterical!
She finally dropped it and stood there
dazed. And [then she] picked up the
egg and did it again. And again. And
again.” When will they learn?
Here’s another cat who didn’t learn
from her mistakes.”One day, after we
had gotten seven or eight inches of
snow, my cat decided to be a brave
adventurer and dash out of the door.”
“She knows she absolutely hates
snow, but always does this. …
She runs out, jumps into the snow,
and disappears. I’m sitting there
letting her learn her lesson. I hear a
muffled meow-scream as she very,
very slowly lifts her head up above
the snow. Her mouth stays wide open
HOURS
… and [she] continues to stare at me
doing this meow until I came and
The kitty’s owner wrote that she did
the same exact thing again an hour
later. Too good.
A Sticky Situation
Ever buy your pet an expensive toy
and they still choose to play with a
paper bag instead? “My cat once discovered
a roll of fly tape in a kitchen
cabinet. Not sure how he managed it,
but we walked in the door to find he
had effectively hog-tied himself in the
middle of the floor.
A big fat cat with long gray fur sticking
out in giant tufts between the strips
of tacky, gooey tape he’d managed to
wind all over himself, crimping his tail
in two places.”
“We felt horrible for laughing, but it
was such a ridiculous scene that we
were still cracking up even while cutting
the tape away and checking to
make sure his tail wasn’t broken. (He
was a little traumatized and temporarily
looked like a case of Dr. Jekyll
and Mr. Hyde with many random bald
spots, but otherwise perfectly fine).”
are in town performing so make sure
you take advantage of their appearance
and arrive early for a good seat.
The show is free but donations are
accepted by the Seven Lakes Business
Guild to enhance the Seven
Lakes Business Village.
Reuben Kennedy will “kick off” the
show performing at 6:30. Reuben
is Ryan and Justin’s cousin and is a
local musician. His music is “Southern
Rock Americana” with a folksy
element.
Reuben served 4 years recently in the
Army as a “Combat Medic “ and was
his A.A at Sandhills CC and will
El Paso playing bars and Texas honky
tonks while becoming a seasoned
performer. You can catch a show
with Reuben locally at O’Donnell’s
Pub, Jefferson Inn and other venues.
He also hosts open Mic Night at
O’Donnell’s
McKenzies Mill brothers have been
extremely busy playing at such
venues as the Wild Horse Saloon in
Nashville.
The duo consistently receives rave
reviews for their performances of
fresh “Southern Fried Rock & Roll”,
from the crowd as well as Nashville
insiders.
The music duo are in the process of
heading to the studio to produce an
album consisting of approximately 15
new songs written by the brothers.
Advance production has been finalized
and veteran Nashville musician
and Grammy Nominated producer
Kent Wells will be produc-ing the
album. Among other nota-bles, Kent
is the producer for Dolly Parton.
the connections, the talent and
the passion to help their clients
recently begun pursuing acting.
Justin is on the way to Europe this upcoming
summer as Co-Producer with
Kent and will be the music director
for “About Kings” a progressive
country band based in Austria which
is slated to tour Germany in June and
Austria
in August. The band was founded
in 2017 by Mario Barth and Gernot
joint band project and create their
debut single “Easy Rider “.
The two Easy Riders and their powerful
unique sound now move across
the country together and bringing
“rock music, love and anything but
The comedic talent of Ron Perkinson,
splitting laughter.
Sanford’s Ron Perkinson calls himself
a “recovering attorney.” Legal
work paid the bills for most of his
professional life, and for the last
18 years he’s been a professional
mediator for civil lawsuits – a role in
which he says humor has proven to
be an effective tool.
Which works out well, because
anyone who knows Perkinson knows
of his wit – and maybe of his second
career, which has been in stand-up
comedy. Since 1983, when Goodnight’s
opened in Raleigh, Perkinson
has performed sets off and on, racking
up hundreds of shows and even
rubbing elbows with now-famous
professionals like Jay Leno and Paul
Rob Matthews is a Sanford native
who has earned his spurs as a
dedicated professional musician. His
talents cover a wide range, including
Rob is known for performing a wide
variety of songs with a very unique
one man show that is always full of
energy, and unpredictable at times.
Reviews of his live shows have used
phrases like “smooth voice,” “gritty
and “charismatic” to describe the
West Side President
Art Wieland Resigns
President of SLWLA, Art Wieland
resigned from the Board of Directors
of the West Side. Art announced
his resignation at a recent Board Of
Directors meeting by stating:
“I have invested an enormous
amount of time and energy in SLWLA
since joining the Board in December
of 2017.....always aiming to make the
neighborhood a little better every
day.
I have worked since I was 9 or 10
years old (cutting grass and shoveling
snow) and really have never
stopped working since.
Pat and I recently lost a very close
friend and colleague which caused
me to reevaluate the time I was committing
to things other than simply
enjoying our life together.
My resigning from the Board is an
NEWS
attempt to do just that......and there
is simply nothing more to it. We have
a wonderful community which I will
continue to support and where I fully
expect to live for many, many years to
come.
We have an excellent Board of
Directors and Community Manager
and I urge everyone to support their
efforts. I also want to commend the
hard work of our committee volunteers...they
are the fabric that holds
the community together and I strongly
encourage those of you who have not
yet volunteered to please do so. You
will meet many people you otherwise
wouldn’t.....and be the better for it.
Lastly, I want to thank my fellow
Board members for the immense
privilege they accord me of counting
them as my friends....and, much to
their chagrin.....I do plan on staying in
touch.”
In April the SLGC took a road trip
to JJ’s Place, a nursery and greenhouse
on Route 15/501 in Sanford.
Jessica Faulk (R) & Currin Blakley
Jessica Faulk, owner, and her staff,
Currin Blakley and Susan Hagins,
warmly welcomed the group of 28
to their front porch seating area.
Jessica facilitated an interactive
discussion on plant choices for your
garden, choices that do well in our
area, and design considerations.
They answered many questions and
then led a tour of the greenhouse
area where they demonstrated how
to properly dead head geraniums.
After the tour, participants shopped
both the plant selections and the
unique garden and gift products
offered in the shop.
After our tour and talk at JJ’s Place,
the group headed for Carthage for
lunch, making a couple of brief tops
at White Hill Farm and Ole Carthage
Farm for fresh produce.
The trip was topped off with a buffet
lunch at Aroma in Carthage. We all
returned home with plants, produce,
and full stomachs!
