Summer is finally here and with its arrival 

there are many new businesses 

coming to the Seven Lakes area in 

the near future. 

Pinnacle Storage that recently 

opened for business, Domino’s Pizza, 

O’Reilly’s Auto Parts and more dining 

options with Tri-City development in 

the initial planning stage adjacent to 

the Elementary school. 

With the widening of Hwy #211 I’m 

sure this is just the “tip of the iceberg” 

for new businesses that will 

take advantage of this highway opportunity 

and the ever changing demographical 

make-up in the area. 

The “Avenue Of Flags” will be unfurled 

for Memorial Day, and there 

are approximately 40 new company 

as well as individual sponsors.

Community Blues @ 9.4 % 

It’s community over competition that 

connect Moore County’s three breweries, 

Pinehurst Brewing Co., Southern 

Pines Brewing Co. and Railhouse 

Brewery. 

Craft beer collaborations typically 

inspire creative flavors and methods, 

which is certainly the case with 

the aptly-named Community Blues, 

a Fruited Pastry Weisse,made with 

a little local love … and whole lot of 

dough-nuts. 

“The philosophy behind collaboration 

is utilizing something from the community,” 

says Eric Mitchell, Pinehurst 

Brewing Co’s head brewer. It was the 

suggestion of Southern Pines’ Micah 

Niebauer to showcase an area staple, 

Granny’s Donuts. 

The Aberdeen bakery has been an 

institution for nearly 40 years and it 

was their blueberry cake variety that 

ultimately provided the base for their 

brew – 50 pounds of them to be exact. 

With Southern Pines taking the 

lead on the recipe, Mitchell and his 

team, along with Railhouse brewers, 

all contributed modifications resulting 

in the final product, a hugely flavorful 

purple-hued beer that packs 

fairly powerful punch at 9.4% ABV. 

This marks the first collaboration between 

the three breweries and Mitchell 

hopes there will be more in the 

future. “It’s always fun when everyone 

gets together because everyone 

does things a different way and you 

have to find a middle ground.” 

Community Blues is currently on tap 

at Pinehurst Brewing Company and 

Southern Pines Brewing Company.

stores in North Carolina including

new store concept in Seven Lakes.

According to Storm Rutcho, Vice President,

“our company has been looking 

at Seven Lakes for about 10 years. 

With the demographics now shifting 

to a younger population we have decided 

to develop a store there.” 

“Domino’s has been shifting strategies 

to smaller areas and the older 

populace are not dining with as much 

pizza as in earlier years. This was 

a major factor for our company to 

develop the Seven Lakes area.”

corporate offices and she confirmed 

that a new “Theatre Style” Domino’s 

Pizza store will be opening soon

With no start-up capital and little 

guidance on how to start 

such a venture, we relied heavily 

on the efforts of family members 

and teammates to plan, organize, 

and execute the benefit. 

In just 5 weeks, a small group of approximately 

15 people raised money, 

garnered donations from the 

surrounding North Carolina communities 

of Southern Pines, Fayetteville, 

and Pinehurst, and as far 

reaching as Dallas, New York City, 

and Miami. 

What started out as a plan to buy a 

keg of beer, grill hamburgers, and 

celebrate the lives and legacies of 

Duskin and Stephens with their 

families, bolstered into a highly 

organized event, attended by nearly 

2,000 people and raising more 

than we could have ever imagined. 

Now the Beef and Beer is an annual 

staple in the Sandhills community 

and continues to grow in 

attendance and success each year.

The Sandhills Motoring Festival will take place Memorial Day Weekend from 

Friday, May 24th through Monday, May 27th. Each club has lined up a variety 

of events for their respective members, along with combined club events, 

all culminating in the Sunday Car Show taking place in the historic Village of 

Pinehurst from 9am until 3pm. Any proceeds from the event will be donated 

to Sandhills Community College Foundation. 

The Sandhills Motoring Festival has events lined up for every car 

enthusiast culminating in a “Concours in the Village” on Sunday May 

26th on the streets of the historic Village of Pinehurst. 

Key Events Include: 

“Automobiles & BBQ” Friday, May 24th 

Sandhills Motoring Festival kicks off the weekend of events with 

Automobiles & BBQ at Little River Golf Resort in Carthage taking

In an effort to raise additional funds necessary to repair the roads

deplorable condition due to limited funds raised by the Business Guild.

to “turn back the clock.” 

Despite all the anti-aging products 

pushed on us, it’s inevitable that we 

will get older. Before you get started, 

it’s essential to get checked out by 

your doctor. However, some of the 

things we lose as we age can actually 

be prevented, including: 

Strength and Muscle: Some experts 

have suggested that muscle mass 

declines about 1 percent each year 

from age 30. Strength training has 

incredible benefits for everyone, 

but especially for seniors. Experts 

believe that “resistance exercise 

may forestall declines in strength 

and muscle mass for decades.” Lift 

weights for all muscle groups (lower 

body, chest, back, shoulders, biceps, 

triceps, and abs) at least 2 

non-consecutive days each week. 

Cardio Endurance: As we age, we 

often lose aerobic fitness and experts 

believe this contributes to reduced 

mobility in daily life. The National 

Institute on Aging recommends seniors 

shoot for 30 minutes of cardio 

exercise each day. Choose an activity 

you enjoy and something that’s accessible 

such as walking, swimming, 

biking, tennis, etc. 

Flexibility and Balance: Joints change 

with age and this can lead to stiffness, 

decreased range of motion and 

more injuries. 

Balance: Exercise can help you avoid 

injuries from falls and keep you independent 

and mobile. It’s important to 

stay flexible as you get older, so plan 

on stretching after your workouts or 

incorporate yoga into your routine. Be 

sure your muscles are warm when 

you stretch, either from working out 

or after getting out of a hot bath or 

shower. In addition to a basic flexibility 

workout, be sure to incorporate balance 

exercises into your day. 

The good news is that the loss of 

strength, endurance, flexibility, and 

balance aren’t inevitable. The National 

Institute on Aging believes that, 

“when older people lose their ability 

to do things on their own, it doesn’t 

happen just because they have aged. 

More likely it is because they have 

become inactive.” 

Some exercises are unsafe for almost 

everyone over 60. Beware of incorrect

than none, so start with something 

easy and enjoyable. You’ll find that,

your quality of life and help you

Kids need to know what they can 

expect, even if it’s bad news. If you 

don’t discuss the stipulations of the 

wills or trusts before your death, your 

inheritors will be left with the difficult 

task of interpreting your meaning and 

intent on their own. 

This will only add confusion to the 

grief and loss they’re already experiencing. 

You can only save them this pain by 

openly discussing your estate plans 

with your heirs. 

Most parents prefer to divide their 

assets equally among their kids for a 

number of reasons. 

They don’t want to show favoritism; 

they love them equally; or they don’t 

want there to be bad blood among 

the kids once they’re gone. 

If you can visualize your kids wrestling 

over the Jaguar keys in the driveway 

of the funeral home, sell it and decide 

how to split the proceeds. 

Don’t get stuck trying to make sure 

everyone’s perfectly happy. 

Lay it out for them from the beginning: 

“It may not be what each of you 

thinks is fair, but it’s the way I feel 

most comfortable dealing with the

The Greatest Generation 

A few years ago Tom Brokaw aptly 

coined the title of this article for all of 

those men and women that served in 

WWII. 

I am reminded every Memorial Day 

about my father who served in the 

Korean War and my father-in-law who 

enlisted in the armed forces at the 

ripe old age of 17, to serve in WWII. 

My father-in-law, “Chuck” Levinger 

quit high school as many did and got 

permission to enlist in the Marine 

Corps with his buddies in Pittsburgh, 

PA. 

talk about the heat, constant exhaustion 

and watching as the kamikaze 

airplanes from Japan attacked with 

“wave after wave on our fleet of ships 

offshore.” 

When he got home he went to college 

outside of Pittsburgh on the new GI 

Bill and worked at US Steel at nights 

to get his BA degree. He went a few 

years later to Pitt and earned his 

Masters degree. 

He would not even allow a SONY TV in 

his house nor anything else made in 

Japan.

He went on and endured USMC boot 

camp at Parris Island, SC in the summer 

of 1943. He never went into the 

gory details of his service other than 

a few tidbits after a few scotches of 

his time spent on Okinawa. 

The marines came ashore and 

“stormed the beaches” on April 1st 

and he enjoyed his 19th birthday 

while on duty. 

He became a corporal and earned 

about “$70 bucks a month.” He did 

As my husband, Rick always reminds 

me, if he knew that the Lexus he purchased 

a few years before he passed 

away, was actually a Toyota he would 

be “rolling in his grave.”

certainly not when they sound super 

cute. “My significant other and I had 

been trying to teach our dog to make 

less of a mess in our house—specifically, 

to not pull toilet paper off the 

roll.” 

“We weren’t sure we’d been making 

any headway until one day we came 

home to find that while we’d been 

out, about two feet of toilet paper 

had been unrolled…and then somehow 

rolled back up sloppily. All I can 

imagine is her playing with it happily, 

hearing us at the door, thinking, ‘Oh,

whining at me.

Egg On Your Face 

While some cats like to play with 

stuffed mice, catnip, and jingle balls. 

“My cat likes to play with plastic Easter 

eggs. She picks a half up in her 

mouth, and trots around with it, yowling 

all the while, with the egg functioning 

as an amplifier. One year we 

got the kids these big eggs … and 

eventually, she found one and tried 

to play with it the same way.” 

Sadly for this cat, it didn’t work out. 

“When she picked it up, it flipped up 

over face and covered her eyes. She 

panicked and started running around, 

clanging into the baseboard heaters 

and whatever else. It was hysterical! 

She finally dropped it and stood there 

dazed. And [then she] picked up the 

egg and did it again. And again. And 

again.” When will they learn? 

Here’s another cat who didn’t learn 

from her mistakes.”One day, after we 

had gotten seven or eight inches of 

snow, my cat decided to be a brave 

adventurer and dash out of the door.” 

“She knows she absolutely hates 

snow, but always does this. … 

She runs out, jumps into the snow, 

and disappears. I’m sitting there 

letting her learn her lesson. I hear a 

muffled meow-scream as she very, 

very slowly lifts her head up above 

the snow. Her mouth stays wide open 

HOURS 

… and [she] continues to stare at me 

doing this meow until I came and

A Sticky Situation 

Ever buy your pet an expensive toy 

and they still choose to play with a 

paper bag instead? “My cat once discovered 

a roll of fly tape in a kitchen 

cabinet. Not sure how he managed it, 

but we walked in the door to find he 

had effectively hog-tied himself in the 

middle of the floor. 

A big fat cat with long gray fur sticking 

out in giant tufts between the strips 

of tacky, gooey tape he’d managed to 

wind all over himself, crimping his tail 

in two places.” 

“We felt horrible for laughing, but it 

was such a ridiculous scene that we 

were still cracking up even while cutting 

the tape away and checking to 

make sure his tail wasn’t broken. (He 

was a little traumatized and temporarily 

looked like a case of Dr. Jekyll 

and Mr. Hyde with many random bald 

spots, but otherwise perfectly fine).”

More than fourteen thousand bluegill 

were put in Lake Auman on Wednesday, 

April 24th when the Seven Lakes 

Landowners Association used Lake 

Auman Sports Club volunteers to 

stock these fish in the lake. 

New Home For 

14,000 Bluegill’s 

The fish were placed in the water at 

twelve different sites spread around 

the lake in locations that provided 

habitat and good cover. 

Five Sports Club members, nicknamed 

the “Bluegill Bucket Brigade”, 

participated in the stocking effort. 

They were Glenn Anderson, Ben Benjamin, 

Ed Cockman, Bob Long and 

Don Smith, who organized and supervised 

the stocking again this year. 

SLW Landowners Association with 

help from the Lake Auman Sports 

Club addresses the primary recommendation 

for Lake Auman identified 

in a professional lake study of the 

lake conducted in 2012. 

The fish that were stocked were two 

to four inch bluegills. T 

hey were purchased from and delivered 

by Carolina Fish Hatchery in 

Turkey, NC and certified as non-invasive 

species. 

Don’s visiting grandchildren, James 

and Paige Nungester, helped put fish 

in the lake at Johnson Point and his 

grandsons Jason Lovett and Kyle 

Nungester assisted the bucket brigade 

at every stop. 

The annual stocking of fish by the

place on an ongoing basis throughout 

the year by the LA Sports Club, whose 

mission is to enhance the value of

Catching Up With Music Artists 

Ryan & Justin Harris 

McKenzies Mill 

Ryan and Justin Harris, of McKenzies 

Mill Band will be traveling from Nashville, 

TN to Seven Lakes for a benefit 

show performing on stage outdoors 

at the Lakehouse Bar and Grill on 

May 17th. 

It’s not very often that the brothers 

are in town performing so make sure 

you take advantage of their appearance 

and arrive early for a good seat. 

The show is free but donations are 

accepted by the Seven Lakes Business 

Guild to enhance the Seven 

Lakes Business Village. 

Reuben Kennedy will “kick off” the 

show performing at 6:30. Reuben 

is Ryan and Justin’s cousin and is a 

local musician. His music is “Southern 

Rock Americana” with a folksy 

element. 

Reuben served 4 years recently in the 

Army as a “Combat Medic “ and was 

deployed and served a tour in Afghanistan 

where he was awarded the 

Bronze Star and the Combat Medic 

Badge. Reuben recently completed 

his A.A at Sandhills CC and will 

be attendng ECU to earn his B.S. in 

nursing. 

Reuben continued to perfect his 

“hobby” while stationed at Ft. Bliss in 

El Paso playing bars and Texas honky 

tonks while becoming a seasoned 

performer. You can catch a show 

with Reuben locally at O’Donnell’s 

Pub, Jefferson Inn and other venues. 

He also hosts open Mic Night at 

O’Donnell’s 

McKenzies Mill brothers have been 

extremely busy playing at such 

venues as the Wild Horse Saloon in 

Nashville. 

The duo consistently receives rave 

reviews for their performances of 

fresh “Southern Fried Rock & Roll”, 

from the crowd as well as Nashville 

insiders. 

The music duo are in the process of 

heading to the studio to produce an 

album consisting of approximately 15 

new songs written by the brothers. 

Advance production has been finalized 

and veteran Nashville musician 

and Grammy Nominated producer 

Kent Wells will be produc-ing the 

album. Among other nota-bles, Kent 

is the producer for Dolly Parton.

desert, the idea arose to create a 

joint band project and create their 

debut single “Easy Rider “. 

The two Easy Riders and their powerful 

unique sound now move across 

the country together and bringing 

“rock music, love and anything but 

good” to the masses. The first full 

length record of “About Kings” is currently 

being recorded in Nashville and 

is set to release for the summer 2019 

with their first tour.

What’s That Big White Blooming 

Bush? You may have noticed that big 

beautiful white flowering bush at the 

corner of 211 and Seven Lakes Drive 

and wondered what it is! If you get 

close it even smells good! 

For those who want to know, it is a 

White Fringetree. Chionanthus Virginicus 

is a tree native to the savannas 

and lowlands of the southeastern 

United States. 

The primary attraction of this 15-30 

ft., deciduous tree or shrub is the 

drooping clusters of fragrant, white 

blossoms. 

Open House/Yard Sale Rules and Regulations: 

Resident who owns the property has to call the gate to let them know 

the specific date and time of the Open House. 

You are welcome to have an Open House/ Yard Sale sign 50 yards 

from Seven Lakes Drive Main entrance. 

Real Estate Agent or homeowner can give the gate maps, directions, or flyers. 

The security officers are not allowed to give directions. 

No signs are allowed on property. 

You are allowed to have balloons on the turning points. They must be

Art Wieland Resigns 

President of SLWLA, Art Wieland 

resigned from the Board of Directors 

of the West Side. Art announced 

his resignation at a recent Board Of 

Directors meeting by stating: 

“I have invested an enormous 

amount of time and energy in SLWLA 

since joining the Board in December 

of 2017.....always aiming to make the 

neighborhood a little better every 

day. 

I have worked since I was 9 or 10 

years old (cutting grass and shoveling 

snow) and really have never 

stopped working since. 

Pat and I recently lost a very close 

friend and colleague which caused 

me to reevaluate the time I was committing 

to things other than simply 

enjoying our life together. 

My resigning from the Board is an

attempt to do just that......and there 

is simply nothing more to it. We have 

a wonderful community which I will 

continue to support and where I fully 

expect to live for many, many years to 

come. 

We have an excellent Board of 

Directors and Community Manager 

and I urge everyone to support their 

efforts. I also want to commend the 

hard work of our committee volunteers...they 

are the fabric that holds 

the community together and I strongly 

encourage those of you who have not 

yet volunteered to please do so. You 

will meet many people you otherwise 

wouldn’t.....and be the better for it. 

Lastly, I want to thank my fellow 

Board members for the immense 

privilege they accord me of counting 

them as my friends....and, much to 

their chagrin.....I do plan on staying in 

touch.” 

The Foxfire Village Appearance Committee is requesting 

volunteers to assist with re-staining the pool facility 

fence. The scheduled workday is Saturday - May 18th 

- 9:00 AM. All volunteers are asked to bring their own 

brushes, rollers, sprayers, and drop cloths. The Appearance 

Committee will supply the stain.

the Lake Auman Sports Club (LASC) 

volunteered to clean up Pine Island 

and make it more accessible for walking 

around.

It’s a picturesque course – as the one-loop 6.2 mile course circles 

Lake Pinehurst on quiet residential streets.

Spring Field Trip 

They cleared 50 feet in from the 

bulkhead along 75% of South side of 

island (swimming side). 

The project was two four hour work 

days eleven days apart. The volunteers 

on April 2nd included: co-leaders 

Dave Lamon and Tom Lawless, 

with Ben Benjamin, Charlie Flinchum, 

Tom LoSapio, Joe Easley, Mike Casey, 

Sara Casey, Lissy Casey, Phil Menendian, 

Mark Haut, Wendell Kronis, Ron 

Workman, and Dick Williams. 

They also cut off branches along the 

perimeter up to 6 and 7 feet high plus 

an additional 20 feet in along the 

whole South side of island.

In April the SLGC took a road trip 

to JJ’s Place, a nursery and greenhouse 

on Route 15/501 in Sanford.

to their front porch seating area. 

Jessica facilitated an interactive 

discussion on plant choices for your 

garden, choices that do well in our 

area, and design considerations. 

They answered many questions and 

then led a tour of the greenhouse 

area where they demonstrated how 

to properly dead head geraniums. 

After the tour, participants shopped 

both the plant selections and the 

unique garden and gift products 

offered in the shop. 

After our tour and talk at JJ’s Place, 

the group headed for Carthage for 

lunch, making a couple of brief tops 

at White Hill Farm and Ole Carthage 

Farm for fresh produce. 

The trip was topped off with a buffet 

lunch at Aroma in Carthage. We all 

returned home with plants, produce, 

and full stomachs!
