<strong>the</strong>ir deliverance. So <strong>the</strong>y sent ambassadors <strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong> king <strong>of</strong> Assyria, and<br />

desired him <strong>to</strong> send <strong>the</strong>m some <strong>of</strong> those priests <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Israelites whom he had<br />

taken captive. And when he <strong>the</strong>reupon sent <strong>the</strong>m, and <strong>the</strong> people were by<br />

<strong>the</strong>m taught <strong>the</strong> laws, and <strong>the</strong> holy worship <strong>of</strong> God, <strong>the</strong>y worshipped him in a<br />

respectful manner, and <strong>the</strong> plague ceased immediately; and indeed <strong>the</strong>y<br />

continue <strong>to</strong> make use <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> very same cus<strong>to</strong>ms <strong>to</strong> this very time, and are<br />

called in <strong>the</strong> Hebrew <strong>to</strong>ngue Cutlans, but in <strong>the</strong> Greek <strong>to</strong>ngue Samaritans.<br />

And when <strong>the</strong>y see <strong>the</strong> Jews in prosperity, <strong>the</strong>y pretend that <strong>the</strong>y are<br />

changed, and allied <strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong>m, and call <strong>the</strong>m kinsmen, as though <strong>the</strong>y were<br />

derived from Joseph, and had by that means an original alliance with <strong>the</strong>m;<br />

but when <strong>the</strong>y see <strong>the</strong>m falling in<strong>to</strong> a low condition, <strong>the</strong>y say <strong>the</strong>y are no way<br />

related <strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong>m, and that <strong>the</strong> Jews have no right <strong>to</strong> expect any kindness or<br />

marks <strong>of</strong> kindred from <strong>the</strong>m, but <strong>the</strong>y declare that <strong>the</strong>y are sojourners, that<br />

come from o<strong>the</strong>r countries. But <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>se we shall have a more seasonable<br />

opportunity <strong>to</strong> discourse hereafter.<br />

Footnote:<br />

1. This siege <strong>of</strong> Samaria, though not given a particular account <strong>of</strong>, ei<strong>the</strong>r in<br />

our Hebrew or Greek Bibles, or in <strong>Josephus</strong>, was so very long, no less<br />

than three years, that it was no way improbable but that parents, and<br />

particularly mo<strong>the</strong>rs, might <strong>the</strong>rein be reduced <strong>to</strong> eat <strong>the</strong>ir own children,<br />

as <strong>the</strong> law <strong>of</strong> Moses had threatened upon <strong>the</strong>ir disobedience, Leviticus<br />

26;29; Deuteronomy 28:53-57; and as was accomplished in <strong>the</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r<br />

shorter sieges <strong>of</strong> both <strong>the</strong> capital cities, Jerusalem and Samaria; <strong>the</strong><br />

former mentioned Jeremiah 19:9; Antiq. B. IX. ch. 4. sect. 4, and <strong>the</strong><br />

latter, 2 Kings 6:26-29.<br />
