‘It’s just such a talented bunch’
GBN math team
three-peats as
state champs
Martin Carlino, Editor
Glenbrook North’s math
team has done it again.
The highly skilled group
of GBN students made history
on May 4, delivering
another championship performance
to win their third
straight state title from
the Illinois Council of
Teachers of Mathematics.
During the history-making
trip to the state final,
the Spartans finished first
overall as a team, and also
took home first place in
seven of 11 events. For a
state-record 39th-straight
year, the team qualified
its entire lineup for the
state final, with 30 North
students competing in this
year’s tournament. This
year’s title was GBN’s
fourth, with previous
championships coming in
2001, 2017 and 2018.
“It’s really exciting —
I’m so happy for the kids,”
said Steve Goodman, head
coach of the GBN math
team. “I have to stop and
take a step back to just remember
how lucky I am
to work with this group.
It’s just such a talented
bunch.”
At the individual level,
the Spartans had top finishers
across multiple grade
levels and state championship
events. Senior Siva
Muthupalaniappan and
sophomore Brendan Biernacki
each repeated as the
individual state champion
for their grade level, with
Muthupalaniappan earning
the title in precalculus
A group of graduating Glenbrook North seniors on the school’s math team gather
Math Contest. Photo Submitted
and Biernacki winning in
geometry.
Aside from the seven
first-place finishes, GBN
finished top-five in five additional
events.
Goodman said the
team’s group of seniors
is “the deepest class that
he’s ever had,” and from
the start, he could tell it
was a special group of
students.
“I don’t want to let them
go ... it’s such a pleasure
to work with them both in
the classroom and during
practices,” he said.
In addition to the seniors,
students at each
grade level won events at
the tournament, an imperative
factor in winning a
team state championship.
Each grade level works
with GBN educators who
are also coaches on the
team. Doing so is a key to
the group’s success.
“I depend so much on
my wonderful assistant
coaches,” Goodman said.
“We wouldn’t have the
success we do without
their hard work. Brad Benson,
Mike Campbell, John
Krickl and Mark Lewis put
in countless hours working
with these kids, and our
math department supervisor,
Maria Vasilopoulos,
also came with us downstate.
I am so fortunate to
be able to work with each
of them.”
During an interview
with The Tower, members
of the GBN math team said
the group’s overall team
chemistry has been key
in winning three consecutive
titles. Senior Britney
Sun described the group
as a family, and a group
that lifts each other up and
encourages everyone to do
their best.
The graduating seniors
said ending their math
team careers with state titles
is a proud accomplishment
and their time on the
math team is something
they’ll all cherish.
Outside of the team,
many students volunteer at
their junior high schools’
math programs, work with
local educational nonprofits
and offer math sessions
at the Northbrook Public
Library.
“It just amazes me how
wonderful these kids are,”
Goodman said.
Northbrook Plan Commission
Developers make final adjustments to Northbrook Court proposal
Commissioners
weigh changes
before scheduled
May 21 vote
Neil Milbert
Freelance Reporter
The Northbrook Plan
Commission concluded its
prolonged hearings on the
proposed redevelopment of
Northbrook Court during
its Tuesday, May 7 regular
meeting, and directed Village
staff to prepare a resolution
on the proposal that
has as its key component
luxury apartments targeting
active adults, young professionals
and empty nesters.
“Next meeting on May
21 we will vote either up
or down,” Commission
Chair Marcia Franklin said
after her resolution motion
passed unanimously, concluding
the public hearings
that began on March
5 and continued on April
4. “There will be no public
comment at that time.”
Following the Tuesday,
May 21 vote, the redevelopment
proposal and the
Plan Commission’s recommendation
will be submitted
to the Village Board of
Trustees for further deliberation
and a final decision
on the fate of a property
that currently produces 25
percent of the village’s tax
revenue.
The applicants are
Northbrook Anchor Acquisition,
LLC — which is a
joint venture of Brookfield
Properties and Ryan Companies
— and Westcoast
Estates, owner of the land
where the shopping center
that dates back to 1976 is
located.
Following each of the
prior hearings, in response
The Northbrook Plan Commission is scheduled to vote on a Northbrook Court
redevelopment proposal at its Tuesday, May 21 meeting. Included in the proposal is
the construction of a 315-unit luxury apartment building where Macy’s now stands.
Design rendering courtesy of Brookfield Properties.
to strong objections from
residents of the neighborhood,
the board asked the
applicants to make modifications.
Mainly their
complaints concerned the
proximity of the apartment
building to residences, the
height of the building and
the inclusion of a grocery
store in the redevelopment
package.
At the May 7 meeting,
members of the commission
heard presentations
from Michaela
Kohlstedt, Northbrook’s
deputy director of development
and planning service,
and the would-be developers
Brookfield Properties
Senior Vice-President
Adam Tritt and Ryan Company
Senior Vice-President
Dan Walsh, and listened
to ongoing concerns of
neighborhood residents.
Franklin, Steve Elisco,
Johannah Hebl, Mark De-
Bartolo and Norm Jacobs
seemed inclined to vote in
favor. Jennifer Lawrence,
Jeremy Melnick and Dan
Pepoon still had some
misgivings but weren’t
adamant.
Speaking before a standing-room-only
crowd of
more than 70 people that
came to the hearing, Tritt
and Ryan addressed the
third revision modifications
in the proposed project that
entails the construction of a
315-unit luxury apartment
building where Macy’s
now stands.
The developers also consider
the ground level and a
grand lawn connecting the
development with the existing
mall where Lord and
Taylor and Nieman Marcus
department stores are located
to be integral parts of the
makeover.
“The lawn is the pivotal
point,” Tritt said. “It’s
important to us that the
new and existing work
together.”
Among the other major
components in the redevelopment
are parking for
apartment residents and
guests, a restaurant, a fitness
center, dance studios,
amusement and recreation
facilities and a car
dealership.
Kohlstedt provided a detailed
rundown of the modifications
submitted by the
developers.
They call for the residential
building to be shifted
28 feet to the north to increase
the setback; the accompanying
grocery store
to be shifted to the north;
residential units to be shifted
to a new north wing; the
parking/drop off area to be
reconfigured to accommodate
these shifts; and grading
to be modified to cover
the parking podium to the
south with landscaping to
be added to this area.
Walsh and Ryan elaborated
on the updates, adjustments
and refinements.
“We’re moving mass
from the upper floors,”
Ryan said. “The top floors
are set back further. The
height of the southernmost
façade is now 52 feet. The
berm area will fully cover
parking area and we add
landscaping to soften (the
impact).”
Tritt talked about the
Northbrook Court redevelopment
vision, grocery
market studies, retail development
use studies, alternative
master plan considerations
and the proposed
site plan alterations.
A market analysis conducted
by the shopping
center consultant, Melaniphy
& Associates, LLC,
showed that only 2 percent
of grocery sales are e-commerce,
a stark contrast with
the sale of merchandise
via the Internet outlets and
Amazon.
According to Tritt, grocery
sales in the Northbrook
area total $140 million
but 17.4 percent of
these sales are outside the
area and predicted that a
Northbrook Court grocery
store would not only
significantly reduce this
percentage but also that 20
percent of the new grocery
volume would come from
outside the area.
He said in the last nine
years his firm has added 15
grocery store locations in
11 states and 11 additional
stores, including the one in
Northbrook Court, are in
the development stage in
six states.
Tritt cited the success of
the firm’s mall redevelopment
ventures in Maryland,
Massachusetts and
the Oakbrook Center in the
western suburbs.
14 locals continue to
express concern
Following the presentations,
15 members of the
audience addressed the
Plan Commission. Despite
the modifications,
all but one expressed their
dissatisfaction.
“Moving the building 28
feet is still not acceptable to
residents,” said Ken Smith,
president of the Glenbrook
Countryside Property
Owners Association. “We
had a neighborhood meeting
and the main thrust of
comments were about the
building. Everyone was
against it. Where it is right
now is not viable for us.
The top floor is too close
to backyards, too close and
too high.
“We’re not against this
project at all. We’re for it.
It’s just not acceptable right
now.”
Mark Lenz, an attorney
representing landowners
south of the complex, said
the apartment building will
impact privacy and may
impact property values.
Janice Gould, president
of the Williamsburg Square
Homeowners Association,
asked: “Who will help us
get in and out when our
roads are blocked (because
of traffic created by the
apartment residents)?”
“It would be nice to
redo Northbrook Court
and redevelop Lord and
Taylor instead of doing it
piecemeal,” suggested Jim
Beckett, who has put on
hold his plans of selling his
home. “We are concerned
with the loss of property
value because the development
is too close and too
high. We can do better.”
“There is no compelling
evidence that the grocery
store cannot go to the
south side of the building,”
argued Leonard Ginzbeg.
Ken Slepicka, a 20-year
Northbrook resident who
spent four years as a Park
Board Commissioner,
was the lone proponent to
address the Commission.
“Northbrook Court needs
a redesign,” he said. “Oakbrook
Center is a thriving
complex. We need that kind
of complex here. If we lose
Northbrook Court, taxes
will go up 25 percent.”
“Do what is best for the
Northbrook Court’s Macy’s to close —
despite outcome of redevelopment proposal
Frankie
The Volpe Family, of Northbrook
Frankie is a 7-year-old French
Bulldog full of personality.
While he’s predominately a
couch potato, some of his
other favorite pastimes include
serving watch to protect the
neighborhood from small wildlife, going for long
walks around the block and standing in front of the
refrigerator until someone opens it up to give him
a carrot treat. He also enjoys hanging out with his
best friend, Jackson the Beagle. Together, the two
of them co-conspire to catch chipmunks by combining
their keen sense of smell and ability to dig.
Thankfully, they have had no success to date.
Martin Carlino, Editor
After 24 years as one
of Northbrook Court’s anchor
stores, Macy’s will
officially close its doors in
the coming weeks, according
to a statement from the
department store company
sent to The Tower.
Carolyn Ng Cohen, a
spokeswoman for Macy’s,
told The Tower the store
will run for approximately
8-12 more weeks before
closure.
Signage indicating
a clearance sale and
store closure was posted
throughout the store in
early May, according to
Ng Cohen.
Macy’s officials previously
shared the information
with its colleagues.
Per Ng Cohen, “regular,
non-seasonal employees
who we are unable to place
at Macy’s will be eligible
for severance, including
outplacement resources.”
The store’s closure
comes amid ongoing discussions
in the Village of
Northbrook for a massive
proposed redevelopment
of Northbrook Court.
The potential developers
are Northbrook Anchor
Acquisition, LLC —
which is a joint venture of
Brookfield Properties and
Ryan Companies — and
Westcoast Estates, owner
of the land where the shopping
center is located.
Brookfield Properties
purchased Northbrook
Court’s Macy’s store in
early 2018 for $25 million,
as reported by The Tower.
Following the sale, Macy’s
leased back the store to remain
in operation.
Included in the potential
development is the
construction of a 315-unit
luxury apartment building
where Macy’s now stands.
Among other elements
in the proposal are parking
for apartment residents
and guests, a restaurant, a
fitness center, dance studios,
amusement and recreation
facilities and a car
dealership.
The Northbrook Plan
Northbrook Court’s Macy’s store will close its doors in
the coming weeks after 24 years as one of the mall’s
anchor stores. Martin Carlino/22nd Century Media
Commission concluded its
months-long hearings on
the proposed redevelopment
during its Tuesday,
May 7 meeting. Commissioners
have yet to offer
their official approval —
or disapproval — of the
proposal yet.
The Commission is expected
to vote at its Tuesday,
May 21 meeting.
Once the Commission delivers
a ruling, it will make
its way to Northbrook’s
Village Board.
But regardless of if the
redevelopment passes, the
store will still close.
“Brookfield’s plans for
redevelopment of the mall
will impact the Macy’s
Northbrook store. ... The
decision to close stores
is always a difficult one,
but Macy’s is delighted
to have served the Northbrook
community over
the past 24 years,” the
statement reads in part.
court
From Page 6
whole of the village, not
just a small part,” Slepicka
urged the commissioners.
“We can’t let perfect get in
the way of good enough.
I think the project as put
forward is good enough.”
The commissioners who
supported the project were
of the same opinion.
“The developer has done
what we asked,” Elisco
said. “Reducing the height
from 80 feet to 52 feet satisfied
the bulk and mass concerns
I had. It is a drastic
reduction of the mass at the
setback area. I believe this
is a good compromise.”
Comments made
by remaining Plan
Commissioners
Jacobs: “The petitioner
came back with the information
we asked for and
the changes we asked for.
I believe they’ve made a
good effort.”
DeBartolo: “We’re here
to advise and advocate for
the community as a whole.
They can’t go anywhere to
the north, west and south.”
Hebl: “I’m satisfied.
It’s not a perfect idea. I
think it’s a good idea. I do
support this project.”
Lawrence was the most
resistant of the commissioners
with misgivings.
“I hope the grocery
store doesn’t come back to
haunt the project,” she said.
“From knowing what’s
working in the town with
grocery stores it’s hard to
bless the project. I feel it’s
very close.”
Melnick and Pepoon
seemed on the verge of becoming
proponents.
“I feel this project is
necessary for Northbrook;
if they change it a little
bit I’m all for it,” Melnick
said.
“The most important
thing is Northbrook Court
doesn’t go down,” Pepoon
said. “The market research I
read is that a grocery store is
one of the best anchors you
can have in a development.
“The apartment building
is in the right place; it’s just
one story too high. Reduce
the height a little bit more.
I’d like to see more of a
tweak.”
Franklin had the last
word.
“We’ve heard your concerns,”
the chair told the
mall’s neighbors. “We
made sure the developer
did as well. Good, not
perfect, is an accurate description.
I think we’ve
gone about as far as we
could. We’ve pretty much
accomplished as much as
we can accomplish.”

Westmoor library goes beyond reading books
Chris Pullam
Freelance Reporter
Refreshing the library
options at Westmoor
School in Northbrook
could’ve been a pretty
simple process. Then
again, “simple” would’ve
meant wasting a valuable
learning experience.
During the 2018-2019
school year, Westmoor
librarian Tara LaCerra
launched Northbrook
School District 28’s firstever
Library Advisory
Committee, made up of
12 students in grades
3–5, to develop leadership
skills while simultaneously
building their
self-confidence.
“The students (on the
committee) are ambassadors
of the library for their
respective classes,” LaCerra
said. “They go back to
class after spending their
lunch period in the library
and talk about the author
who’s going to visit or
the new programming or
books we just got.
“But most importantly,
they’re able to put
their mark on our school
through the library, which
touches every student.
Their ability to leave here
knowing they did something
tangible that will
help future students is
invaluable.”
While the experience is
invaluable, the books cost
real money. With approximately
$1,200 to spend on
new books this year, LaCerra
tasked the committee
with surveying students
and staff about their book
needs, creating graphs
and charts to outline the
requests, considering the
budget, and figuring out
which books were already
in the library.
Then, they spent nearly
two hours exploring
genres, debating titles,
calculating funds, and researching
reviews at a field
trip to the Book Bin, 1151
Church St., Northbrook.
Now, thanks to their efforts,
Westmoor’s library
is stocked with a host of
new titles for current and
future students to enjoy.
“Throughout this entire
process, they learned so
much about what goes into
a library, that it’s so much
more than just a place with
a lot of books,” LaCerra
said. “… It’s important for
kids to see that libraries
can evolve with them and
their needs.”
At the end of the field
trip, the Book Bin’s owner,
Alli Gilley, gave each student
an advance copy of
a book from his or her favorite
genre, allowing the
students to read the titles
before almost anyone else
in the world. And as an
added bonus, according to
LaCerra, some of the kids
learned about the existence
of brick-and-mortar bookstores,
opening a whole
new world of possibilities
to these early learners.
In order to join the committee,
students had to
pitch themselves to LaCerra
and her assistant, Kim
Burnson, through writing
or an audio recording. The
librarians initially expected
to accept three students
from each grade level,
3–5, but since so many of
Westmoor’s 350 students
applied for the committee
positions, they eventually
accepted 12 students
without considering age.
“We went through and
used a rubric to see if any
of the students’ answers
were innovative or different
form the others,” LaCerra
said. “We wanted to
know what each student
As part of Northbrook School District 28’s first-ever Library Advisory Committee,
Westmoor School students traveled to Northbrook’s The Book Bin to buy books for
the school’s library. Photo Submitted
Westmoor students help pick out books at the Book Bin.
would bring to table that
no else would. In the end,
we thought it was more
important to focus on the
answer and student rather
than trying to represent a
certain grade level.”
With five committee
members graduating
from Westmoor this year,
LaCerra encourages both
new and current students,
who may have developed
or changed over the past
nine months, to apply for
the opening spots. While
she will ask the other current
members if they want
to stay on the committee
next year, she doesn’t
expect any to give up the
opportunity.
And with a successful
first year in the books,
LaCerra, who has been the
librarian at Westmoor for
15 years, hopes other D28
schools will create their
own committees based on
their model.
THE GLENVIEW LANTERN
Glenview Village Board:
New tobacco businesses
banned for 120 days
Glenview won’t be
welcoming additional tobacco
stores, vaping supply
stores, cigar lounges
or hookah lounges in the
immediate future.
During its Tuesday,
May 7 meeting, the Glenview
Village Board unanimously
approved a moratorium
that would prevent
the issuance of licenses to
any new retail businesses
that primarily specialize
in tobacco or alternative
nicotine products.
The moratorium will expire
after 120 days unless
extended by future board
action and will not restrict
or impede any existing
businesses that already
exist.
The decision came
amidst a broader discussion
about tobacco access
across Illinois, and trustees
hope to prevent new
tobacco-centric business
from entering the village
until they have a chance to
decide how Glenview will
approach the issue, whether
adopting the state’s
new regulations, keeping
the village’s current
regulations or adopting
something more unique.
Currently, state statutes
allow individuals 18 years
of age or older to purchase
tobacco and alternative
nicotine products at
physical stores and online.
The sale of these products
to minors, as well as
the possession of these
products by minors, is
considered a petty offense
punishable by a $200 fine
for first-time offenders.
Increased fines of up
to $800 per offense apply
if multiple offenses
occur within any 24-month
period.
Wood Oaks students present final projects on genocide prevention
Submitted Content
Wood Oaks eighth-graders
recently presented their
final projects on genocide
after studying genocide
and genocide prevention
in social studies classes.
The students have been
studying the issue of
genocide, particularly in
Darfur and Rwanda. They
participated in a half-day
workshop in March with
Carl Wilkens, who was
the last American to stay
in Rwanda during the
genocide there in 1994.
He is credited with saving
hundreds of lives by his
humanitarian efforts.
The student projects
ran the gamut, from posters
to videos, to pieces of
art. The students were encouraged
to be creative,
said Gella Meyerhoff, one
of the Wood Oaks social
Paige Star, left, and Madison Rosengard show off their
genocide projects at Wood Oaks Junior High School.
studies teachers.
“Because the unit on
genocide has troubling
and emotionally charged
content, students were encouraged
to use art as a
means of expression, reflecting
their response to
this important and difficult
subject,” Meyerhoff said.
Two students, Alex
Smith and Maddie Furman,
created a claw-type game
with the words “Never
Again” scrawled on the
background. Each of the
“prizes” included a photo
and information about a
genocide event in history,
thus the sign on the machine
which reads, “Don’t
play the game of genocide
... we all know it’s rigged.”
Paige Star created a
structure that looked like
a barn to represent one
Wood Oaks eighth-graders Alex Smith, left, and Maddie Furman created this clawtype
game for their genocide project. Photos courtesy of District 27
that her great-grandfather
sought refuge in after escaping
the Nazis during a
death march in World War
II.
Meyerhoff said the
unit is designed to not
only teach the students
about genocide, but arm
them with information
to keep the killings from
happening again.
“Our eighth grade students
explore genocide
and genocide prevention
to envision the ways
that they might transform
their learning into action
as global citizens impacting
the world in a positive
way,” she said. “Our goal
is to empower students to
‘remember the past and
transform the future.’”
D28 teachers craft musical from scratch
Alexa Burnell
Freelance Reporter
Northbrook School District
28 fifth-grade students
learned the many
life lessons that come
with being on the stage
during their annual musical
production “Going to
America,” written, produced
and directed by art
teacher Jeremy Blair and
music teacher Jeremy
Bartunek.
Although the production
ran earlier this month,
the idea was conceived
nearly two years ago
when Bartunek and Blair
decided a home-grown
production would result
in a most-powerful educational
experience for the
students.
“What I love about District
28 is the focus on developing
the whole child,”
Blair said. “With that concept
in mind, we looked at
the performance as a way
to teach the students how
art, math, literacy, engineering
and other subjects
all overlap, resulting in
a full-fledged production
that the students can
proudly say they helped
create.”
Over the past several
years, these two
teachers spent countless
hours — in and outside
of school —writing the
script, writing songs, cutting
soundtracks, choreographing
dances, casting
the production and so
much more. In the end,
the product was even
more than they could have
imagined because of the
78 students who committed
themselves to the
process.
“I cannot tell you how
incredibly satisfying it
is to see our idea evolve
into a full production with
lighting, sound, music and
a thoughtful plot,” Bartunek
said. “Now, watching
the students share in
our sense of satisfaction
makes it all that much better;
we relied on them just
as they relied on us.
“For example, there
was a point when we realized
we were short a few
lines in one of the songs,
so several kids jumped
in and wrote the lyrics.
Those with math expertise,
helped us map out
stage placements; four
girls manned the entire
sound board alone. This
production was a true
collaborative effort.”
Along with learning the
ins and outs of a production,
young performers
learned valuable lessons
from the storyline as well.
“Going to America” details
the trials and tribulations
that many families
face, while leaving their
homelands for better
opportunities.
Ethan McClure played
Johnny, a character who
traveled from Ireland with
his pregnant wife, unsure
of what his future would
hold. The theme was
one that resonated with
McClure.
“I really appreciated
Johnny because I could
understand how he felt,”
he said. “Not long ago,
I moved from Atlanta
for many reasons; one of
them to have a better public
school opportunity. At
first, I was scared to start
over. But now, I’m so happy
to be here. I have new
friends and a great school.
Just like Johnny, I had to
be brave, stay focused on
the positive and not let fear
get in my way.”
Similarly, Michael
Eichstadt, who also played
Johnny, said his character
and the storyline taught
him about perseverance.
“I learned that in order
to achieve happiness, you
must just keep going and
don’t let the little things
stop you from going after
your dreams,” he said.
“Johnny was scared, but
he didn’t let him stop him.
He had to care for his family
and keep going after
Molly McAnally (left), and Emily Rogers perform during
“Going to America,” a production created completely
by District 28 educators Jeremy Blair and Jeremy
Bartunek. Alexa Burnell/22nd Century Media
what he wanted. Johnny
never gave up. ”
Ella Marks, who played
Fiona, Johnny’s wife,
learned the real challenges
an immigrant faces when
coming to a new country.
“Fiona tried to put on
a brave face, but she was
scared. She was pregnant,
leaving her family, coming
to a new land and not
knowing anyone,” Marks
said. “I realized how scary
it must be for someone in
that position. This story
taught me that life is not always
easy, but if you keep
trying, you can achieve
your dreams; never let fear
stand in your way.”
Salt Creek Tacos offers new concept on the North Shore
Alyssa Groh
Contributing Editor
John des Rosiers knows
a thing or two about operating
a successful restaurant
on the North Shore.
As the owner of two
restaurants in Lake Bluff,
Inovasi and The Otherdoor,
des Rosiers decided
to venture out into Highland
Park and try his hand
at a third restaurant, Salt
Creek Tacos.
Salt Creek Tacos, 431
Temple Ave., Highland
Park, is considered the
middle child of all of his
restaurants.
“I wanted to do something
that slid in between
The Otherdoor and Inovasi,”
des Rosiers said.
The Otherdoor is a fastcasual
Mexican restaurant,
while Inovasi, which is
celebrating its 10th anniversary
this year, is an upscale
American restaurant.
“[Salt Creek Tacos] is
a little bit higher end than
The Otherdoor with an
added focus on every single
item being hand-made,”
des Rosiers said. “I also
wanted to do a place that
was focused on tequila, and
I think we put together a
hell of a good list.”
Running three completely
different restaurants can
be challenging, but it’s
something des Rosiers has
thought about for years.
“I had been thinking a
lot in the last couple years
about the places I want to
build, and what the market
needs,” he said. “I think
something like this is exactly
what a lot of people
are looking for, and what a
lot of people are going to
discover is what they have
been looking for. It’s a
place where everything is
high quality, but affordable
for almost anyone to come
in and eat.”
And in finding the middle
ground between his
other two restaurants, Salt
Creek Tacos is considered
a casual restaurant with a
twist.
“It’s not completely fast
casual and it’s not full service
dining, it’s kind of in
the middle,” des Rosiers
said.
Salt Creek Tacos runs
things slightly different
than most restaurants.
When guests arrive they are
seated at a table and mark
down their own orders on
an order form and bring
it up to the front counter.
Then, the staff will prepare
the food and drinks, and
serve it to guests.
The menu at Salt Creek
Tacos is small — on
purpose.
“I didn’t want us to get
distracted by doing too
many things, I wanted
to do a small number of
things really well.”
One thing Salt Creek Tacos
prides itself on it making
every single item by
hand. Des Rosiers said every
day he has three people
come in just to make tortillas
from scratch, which is
difficult, time consuming
and expensive.
Not only do they take
pride in offering handmade
menu items, they
place an added emphasis
on consistency.
“We want people to
come in and have a taco
10 days in a row and have
it exactly the same every
time,” des Rosiers said.
The grilled steak taco ($4) at Salt Creek Tacos features steak, cilantro, poblano salsa, pickled sweet onion in a
warm tortilla made in-house. Photos by Eric DeGrechie/22nd Century Media
The grilled chicken taco ($3.50) is made with chicken,
avocado, salsa verde, cotija cheese and radish.
“We kept it so that the
menu is easy and fast for
customers to read and order,
it’s easy and fast for us
to make it, it’s consistent
and it’s all done by hand
and it’s high quality.”
After hearing all about
the hand-crafted menu,
22nd Century Media editors
couldn’t wait to dive
in and try some of the food
from Salt Creek Tacos.
We started out with a
classic, house-made chips
& guac ($7). The guacamole
is freshly made
with a lot of flavor and the
hand-made chips are extra
crunchy and unlike typical
tortilla chips.
Next up, we tried three
of five of the taco offerings
at Salt Creek Tacos.
The smoked pork taco
($3.50), is made Veracruz
style with olives, caper, tomato,
sunflower seeds and
jalapeños.
salsa verde, cotija
cheese and radish.
Grilled steak taco ($4)
is topped with cilantro,
poblano salsa and pickled
sweet onion.
After trying each of the
tacos it was hard to choose
a favorite — but one thing
was for sure, they all included
big, bold flavors.
Quesadillas, salads, esquite,
chicharrones and an
extensive tequila and mezcal
list are among some of
the items that round out
the rest of the menu at Salt
Creek Tacos.
Salt Creek Tacos does
not accept reservations,
but offers an online wait
list system where guests
can put their name on the
list and know how long
they have to wait for a
table, before they arrive at
the restaurant.
Athlete of the Week
Michal Dwojak/22nd Century Media
10 Questions
with Jamie Kempner
Kempner was a Glenbrook
North girls basketball
player who signed her
letter of intent to play at
Carthage College.
When and why did
you start playing
basketball?
I started when I was
about 6. I was really drawn
to it, my dad and my
brother, we used to have
a basketball court in my
backyard and that’s when I
really started liking it.
What do you like most
about the sport?
I just like the team part
about it. I think having
a solid team and a group
of girls that are so close.
That’s just the best.
Do you have any
superstitions before a
game?
I always take a shower
before a game. I started
doing that my sophomore
year. It makes me more
awake and in the shower, I
think about the game.
What is your favorite
sports moment?
It wasn’t my senior
night, it was the senior
night during my junior
year against Deerfield and
I made a 3-pointer and that
brought us into overtime.
Everyone was really into
it.
What is one thing
people don’t know
about you?
People don’t know that I
have a twin.
If you could be any
superhero, what super
power would you
want?
I would want to fly. I always
thought that would
be cool.
What would you do if
you won the lottery?
I would donate a lot to
charity. The first thing has
to do with cancer research
and mental health wise.
And then just save it.
If you could play any
other sport, which
would you play?
Probably soccer. I used
to play that but gave it up
for basketball.
What is one thing on
your bucket list?
I want to go zip line
somewhere tropical.
If you could be any
animal, which animal
would you be?
I would be a Great White
Shark because I’ve always
been very fascinated with
them.
GBN gymnasts who
emerged from the preliminary
competition as finalists—Hardagree
in three
events and Mutchnik in
one.
In addition to winning
the pommel horse
Hardagree earned an
award in the vault, tying
Hersey’s Garrett Naughton
for fifth with a score
of 9.4000. Deerfield’s
Matthew Kroscher was
the winner with a 9.6000.
Hardagree’s other event
was the rings in which
he finished 10th with
an 8.8000 followed by
Mutchnik with an 8.2500.
Hardagree said he made
the decision to join the
high school team because
his body felt battered at
the conclusion of the club
season last year.
“I knew there had to be
some sort of change,” he
explained.
“It’s different than club
atmosphere. We are always
together. We’d go
to school, we’d practice,
and we’d go home and
then we’d repeat it the
next day. It was fun going
vault with a 9-foot-3 jump
while Sarah Cottick and
May Radziewicz finished
sixth and seventh, respectively,
in the 200-meter
dash.
All of the strong performances
from the meet
have Cooper and the
other returning Spartans
thinking in a year or two,
they’ll be competing for
the sectional title in the final
event of the meet.
That’s the goal,” Cooper
said. “A lot of the
girls that are running are
sophomores and juniors.
We had some great senior
leadership but we really
had six seniors on the
team so I’m excited to see
what the future holds and
hopefully we get better.”
Glenbrook South junior
Raelyn Roberson has
made a name for herself in
the area when it comes to
her jumping abilities.
The Titan built upon a
strong sophomore campaign
when she finished
second in the state in the
long jump and brought it
into her junior year.
But after winning the
long jump sectional and
qualifying for a return
date the state meet with
an 18-foot-9 jump, she
wasn’t only exciting about
returning to state.
“I’m excited I won’t be
to state as a freshman but
this year was a blast.”
Mutchnik, meanwhile,
has been a GBN gymnast
ever since he was a
freshman and this season
marked the fourth time he
earned a trip to the state
standing by myself,” Roberson
said with a smile.
The junior will be
joined by sophomore Sydney
Willits, who finished
second in the long jump
and also qualified for the
state meet, jumping at 18
feet, 4.5 inches. Willits
also advanced to the state
meet after her third-place
finish in the triple jump
with a 36-foot-9.5 jump.
South finished fourth in
the meet with 64 points.
Roberson failed to qualify
for the state meet in her
races, which she was disappointed
with.
But she’s excited to see
her hard work pay off for
a return visit to the state
meet.
meet.
He downplayed his selection
as IHSA Gymnast
of the Year — an award
that “embodies the spirit
of high school athletics.”
“The coaches seem to
think I represent the sport
“It felt great because I
know that I put in a lot to
work and to see that work
pay off really feels good,”
Roberson said.
Lake Forest’s Sydney
Leonardi didn’t think
she’d be running again
this season let alone qualifying
for the state meet.
After falling in the final
hurdle in a sectional meet
her freshman year and
then tearing her hamstring
the next season, the junior
didn’t imagine that she’d
be celebrating with teammates
after her run in the
300-meter hurdles.
The Scout just missed
out on finishing first in the
meet, settling for second
with a 45.37-second finish.
and the state and if that’s
the case it’s an honor,” he
said. “Individually, it was
my highlight but it’s always
about the team and
the highlight of the weekend
was our team getting
third in the state.
“It felt amazing,” Leonardi
said. “I didn’t even
know if it was going to be
able to run this season, so
to qualify for state is honestly
amazing.”
Her performance was
the highlight of the day
for the Scouts, who finished
12th in the meet
with nine points.
While the Scouts will
end the season, one Lake
Forest runner will continue
to run, even after she
thought she wouldn’t.
“It feels amazing,”
Leonardi said. “Just to
know what I went through,
which made me stronger
as an athlete and a competitor,
so it made it feel
really good and better.”
Glenbrook North boys gymnast Daniel Lavrentiev competes at the IHSA State Meet on Saturday, May 11, in
Hoffman Estates. Gary Larsen/22nd Century Media
“This year we were so
deep and we were putting
together routines that we
weren’t doing last year. On
all four of my good events
I put together better routines
on each of them.”

Scheyer surprises Northbrook’s Willowbrook students with visit
Submitted content
It’s not every day a basketball
giant just walks into
a classroom for a friendly
chat with students, teachers
and administrators.
But May 6 was a very
special day for Willowbrook
School kindergartners
in Sarah Lerman’s
classroom because that is
exactly what happened.
District 30 alumnus and
Mr. Basketball of Illinois
2006, Jon Scheyer, joined
the students and teachers,
to the delight of all present,
especially his nephew
Blake Resnick, who is a
student in the class.
Scheyer, whose smile lit
up the classroom, is now
the associate head coach
of the University of Duke
Blue Devils men’s basketball
team.
He led Glenbrook North
High to an Illinois state
basketball championship
as a high-school All-American
and was on the 2009-
10 Duke Blue Devils team
that won the 2010 NCAA
Basketball Championship,
as a college All-American.
However, at Willowbrook,
he towered over the
excited kindergartners at
6-foot-6, dressed in shorts
and a Duke jacket, and was
their hero of the day.
Nephew Blake Resnick
sat at his side while he
spoke to the children about
things that he, as a team
recruiter, looks for when
looking for new players.
“One must have high
character. Do you listen
to your teachers? Are you
a good person?” he asked.
He then stressed that
good grades, talent and
practice are also very important
to succeed as an
athlete or in any profession.
During a question-andanswer
period, one student
asked what his favorite
number is.
Scheyer said it is 30,
which was his number
when he played at Duke.
When he was in elementary
school, he said his favorite
number was 23 (Michael
Jordan’s number). Then
later, seven was his number
of choice. By the time he
played basketball in college
at Duke, he had chosen the
number 30, and it stuck.
His mother Laury
Scheyer and sister Jenifer
Resnick (mother of Blake),
Jon Scheyer visited Willowbrook School in Northbrook on May 6 in a fun surprise for students and teachers.
Photos submitted
were also in the classroom,
with Principal Dr. Scott
Carlson, and Superintendent
Dr. Brian Wegley.
The kids, with the help
of teacher assistant Sara
Weinstein, handed out
their handmade cards to
Scheyer. In return, he
gave each person an autographed
photo of himself
on the cover of Sports Illustrated
magazine, when
the Blue Devils won the
championship in 2010.
As impressed as the children
were by this super athlete’s
myriad accomplishments,
there was one thing
that they kept asking him to
repeat while he was in their
classroom. That was to
touch the ceiling simply by
just stretching out his arm.
The chant, “Do it again,
do it again,” rang loudly
throughout the room.
However, as most adults
already know, it’s never
truly easy to reach a ceiling.
It takes practice, a lot
of practice.
Scheyer talks to the class and shares words of advice.
Girls Soccer
Spartans fall short in upset bid of New Trier
Michal Dwojak, Sports Editor
Some athletes can’t get a
second chance.
When New Trier midfielder
Emma Weaver
scored the lone goal against
Glenbrook North on May
7, she proved why she was
on of those athletes. The
junior had a perfect opportunity
to break the scoreless
match in the early part
of the second half when she
lead the way on a one-onone
breakaway with the
Spartans goalkeeper. What
seemed like an easy goal
for the sharpshooter turned
into a ball that sailed over
the net.
Weaver got her second
chance.
Almost a minute later,
the Trevian got another opportunity
to break the tie
and this time didn’t sail it,
scoring on a point-blank
shot to secure New Trier a
1-0 win.
“Emma Weaver is death
by woodpecker,” New
Trier head coach Jim Burnside
said. “She’s just going
to keep pecking away and
she’s going to get one eventually.”
Weaver’s goal came in
a matchup between the
Central Suburban League
South champion Trevians
and the CSL North champion
Spartans in one of
the final matches for both
teams before the start of
postseason play.
New Trier started the
game on the attack, creating
pressure and countless
opportunities on the Spartans
side of the ball. The
Trevians failed to score,
though, thanks in part to
great goalkeeping from junior
Ellie Scott and some
misses by New Trier.
Once the Trevians
scored, the Spartans started
to open up their game, creating
opportunities of their
own, but North couldn’t
capitalize against a strong
defense.
“I think we did a good
job of limiting their opportunities,
got lucky a couple
times and got some opportunities
ourselves,” North
head coach Tony Valsamis
said, “but we just couldn’t
ourselves. Against a team
like New Trier, they’ll figure
out how to win.”
North battled the game
without junior captain Olivia
Kosla. The defensemen
has missed several
games due to a concussion
but is expected to return
in time for the start of the
postseason.
Playing a team like New
Trier was good preparation
for what Valsamis knows
his team will see in the
postseason. If North would
win its opening games to
advance to the IHSA regional
final, it would likely
play rival Glenbrook
South, a team very similar
to New Trier.
While the Spartans
wanted to upset one of the
better teams in the state,
matches like the CSL
Crossover are good ways
to help Valsamis grow his
young program.
“Regardless of how this
season ends, I’m happy
with how far we’ve come,
how we’ve developed as
a team and I’m optimistic
looking forward to next
year.”
Spartans see glimpses of future at sectional
Justin Cooper saw exactly
what he wanted from
his Glenbrook North team
at its IHSA sectional.
The Spartans finished
ninth in the 14-team sectional
held at Loyola in
Wilmette on Thursday,
May 9, but many of his
young Spartan athletes
finished with personal records
at the right time.
“Generally I was really
happy with how things
went,” the head coach
Cooper said. “We didn’t
qualify anybody to state
but we continue to get
better and better, so I’m
really excited for where
we’re at.”
New Trier won the sectional
with 98 points, edging
out Evanston in the final
event of the afternoon,
who finished the meet
with 97 points.
One of the highlights
for the Spartans in a day
filled with person bests
came when sophomore
Natalie Sandlow finished
third in the 400-meter
dash having entered the
meet with no prior official
time in the meet. Because
of that, Sandlow raced in
the third heat of the race,
beating the rest of the
competition with quite the
advantage.
Sandlow’s large lead
actually made it hard for
her to keep pace with
what the state-qualifying
time would’ve been, according
to her head coach.
‘That’s really challenging
to run out,” Cooper
said. “I’m really proud of
her and how the girls ran
today.”
Alexandra Chertok and
Claudia Herman provided
some other highlights in
the 3,200 run. Chertok
and Herman finished fifth
and sixth, respectively, in
the meet and improved
on their own times. Junior
Carly Anderson finished
Dul named Coach of the Year, Mutchnik Gymnast of the Year
Freelance Reporter
Momma never said
there’d be nights like this.
Glenbrook North had a
lot to celebrate on Mother’s
Day weekend when
the IHSA State Championships
were held at Hoffman
Estates High School
On Friday night, the
Spartans finished third in
the IHSA team championship
competition.
On Saturday night their
coach, Ryan Dul, was
selected IHSA Coach of
the Year; Casey Mutchnik
was selected IHSA
Gymnast of the Year and
fellow senior Cam Hardegree
joined the celebration
by decisively winning
the individual championship
in the pommel horse
with a career best score of
9.4500.
“At the end of it I just
knew that everything I’d
work for so long finally
had fallen into place,”
said Hardagree, who’d
participated in club gymnastics
rather than joining
the previous two years
after going to the state
meet when he was a freshman
at Barrington.
The team’s third-place
finish was the Spartans’
best performance in the
state meet in the 10 years
that Dul has been their
coach and he believes it is
the second best in school
history.
“I’m blown away,” he
said. “I’m super happy
and honored. And it’s
awesome for Casey to
be Gymnast of the Year
because that gets voted
on by the coaches, which
makes it very special.
“Cam was such a great
addition to our team, not
only as a gymnast but he
has been a great leader as
well. I don’t want to say
he was the only factor in
our success this season
because the guys already
won their remaining eight
dual meets. In multi-team
to do?” asked Dul, shrugging
off the loss to Libertyville
season. “They’re a great
team. They’re the state
champs.”
Libertyville took the
team title at the state
of 159.1500. Niles West
junior Eamon Henning;
sophomores Daniel
Northbrook Baseball announced
May 6 that it will
open its own state-of-theart
indoor baseball training
facility.
Scheduled to open later
this Spring, the Northbrook
Baseball Kipnis Center is
part of the organization’s
ongoing effort to improve
the quality of youth baseball
in the area by providing
Northbrook Travel and
House League players an
unprecedented opportunity
to work with their coaches
year-round in a facility of
their own. The facility will
also host other Northbrook
Baseball-sponsored clinics.
Located at 1851 Janke
Rd., the Kipnis Center is
scheduled to open in June.
The Kipnis Center was
made possible by a generous
donation from Cleveland
Indians second baseman,
Jason Kipnis. Kipnis
is a Northbrook native who
played with Northbrook
Baseball during his youth
before going on to become
a star at Glenbrook North.
Additional important donations
have also been
made by other long-time
Northbrook Baseball volunteers,
which, along with
a recently-launched capital
campaign, will ensure the
facility’s long-term financial
stability.
“Northbrook and Northbrook
Baseball played significant
roles in shaping
me into the person I am today,
and some of my best
childhood memories are
of playing baseball with
my friends on the fields
around town,” Kipnis said.
“Coming from a community
and a youth baseball
environment that gave so
much to me, I am really
happy to have found a way
to give something back.
This facility will help ensure
that the quality of
baseball in Northbrook remains
high and that players
of all levels get access
to year-round training.”
The climate-controlled
facility will feature stateof-the-art
lighting designed
to replicate outdoor
daylight conditions, along
with artificial turf, batting
and pitching tunnels, highquality
pitching machines
and a full array of additional
baseball training
equipment.
As part of the ongoing
partnership between
Northbrook Baseball and
Glenbrook North Baseball
— through the GBN Feeder
Baseball Program —
Glenbrook North Baseball
will also have access to
the Kipnis Center during
weekday mornings and after
school, at a time when
North baseball players somewhere to hit indoors. Photos by Michal Dwojak/22nd
Century Media
The facility is expected to open in June.
the facility would otherwise
sit empty. This will
assist the program with its
player development, winter
scheduling and help
overcome Chicago’s challenging
Spring weather.
“For many years, our
House League teams have
not had access to indoor
training space and our
Travel teams have been
forced to rent space at various
private indoor facilities
throughout the area —
usually at a high cost and
with less than ideal time
slots,” said Mark Gerstein,
president of the Northbrook
Baseball Board of
Directors. “The arrival of
the Kipnis Center makes
those issues problems of
the past. Through the generosity
of Jason and others,
we have developed a firstrate
indoor training center
while managing to keep
the cost of playing baseball
in Northbrook very
low. This is something our
entire community can take
pride in.”
Listen Up
“At the end of it I just knew that everything I’d
work for so long had fallen into place. ”
