Momma never said
there’d be nights like this.
Glenbrook North had a
lot to celebrate on Mother’s
Day weekend when
the IHSA State Championships
were held at Hoffman
Estates High School
On Friday night, the
Spartans finished third in
the IHSA team championship
competition.
On Saturday night their
coach, Ryan Dul, was
selected IHSA Coach of
the Year; Casey Mutchnik
was selected IHSA
Gymnast of the Year and
fellow senior Cam Hardegree
joined the celebration
by decisively winning
the individual championship
in the pommel horse
with a career best score of
9.4500.
“At the end of it I just
knew that everything I’d
work for so long finally
had fallen into place,”
said Hardagree, who’d
participated in club gymnastics
rather than joining
the high school team during
the previous two years
after going to the state
meet when he was a freshman
at Barrington.
The team’s third-place
finish was the Spartans’
best performance in the
state meet in the 10 years
that Dul has been their
coach and he believes it is
the second best in school
history.
“I’m blown away,” he
said. “I’m super happy
and honored. And it’s
awesome for Casey to
be Gymnast of the Year
because that gets voted
on by the coaches, which
makes it very special.
“Cam was such a great
addition to our team, not
only as a gymnast but he
has been a great leader as
well. I don’t want to say
he was the only factor in
our success this season
because the guys already
of work in the off-season.
Cam added the little bit
extra that we needed.”
in their opener against
Libertyville. They then
won their remaining eight
dual meets. In multi-team
invitational meets they recorded
two firsts and two
seconds before prefacing
their state tournament
success story by finishing
second in the Central Suburban
League meet and
first in its IHSA sectional.
“What are you going
to do?” asked Dul, shrugging
off the loss to Libertyville
to start the regular
season. “They’re a great
team. They’re the state
champs.”
Libertyville took the
team title at the state
tournament with a score
of 159.1500. Niles West
was second in the eightteam
competition with
a 158.6500 followed by
GBN with a 157.7000.
Lyons was fourth with a
Joining Hardagree and
Mutchnik on the Spartans’
State Tournament delegation
were seniors Kevin
junior Eamon Henning;
sophomores Daniel
freshmen Ryan Suarez
and Drew Mutchnik.
In the individual competition
the finalists were
the contestants with the
10 highest scores in each
of the events. Because of
ties 11 athletes competed
in the pommel horse, 12
in the floor exercise and
The parallel bars and the
