Justin Cooper saw exactly
what he wanted from
his Glenbrook North team
at its IHSA sectional.
The Spartans finished
ninth in the 14-team sectional
held at Loyola in
Wilmette on Thursday,
May 9, but many of his
young Spartan athletes
finished with personal records
at the right time.
“Generally I was really
happy with how things
went,” the head coach
Cooper said. “We didn’t
qualify anybody to state
but we continue to get
better and better, so I’m
really excited for where
we’re at.”
New Trier won the sectional
with 98 points, edging
out Evanston in the final
event of the afternoon,
who finished the meet
with 97 points.
One of the highlights
for the Spartans in a day
filled with person bests
came when sophomore
Natalie Sandlow finished
third in the 400-meter
dash having entered the
meet with no prior official
time in the meet. Because
of that, Sandlow raced in
the third heat of the race,
beating the rest of the
competition with quite the
advantage.
Sandlow’s large lead
actually made it hard for
her to keep pace with
what the state-qualifying
time would’ve been, according
to her head coach.
‘That’s really challenging
to run out,” Cooper
said. “I’m really proud of
her and how the girls ran
today.”
Alexandra Chertok and
Claudia Herman provided
some other highlights in
the 3,200 run. Chertok
and Herman finished fifth
and sixth, respectively, in
the meet and improved
on their own times. Junior
Carly Anderson finished
fourth in the pole
