NBTE.<br />
The Rec<strong>to</strong>r, Dr. Uduak<br />
Ukekpe, who made the<br />
disclosure while<br />
address<strong>in</strong>g matriculat<strong>in</strong>g<br />
students, said the<br />
polytechnic made<br />
significant progress,<br />
especially <strong>in</strong> the area of<br />
physical <strong>in</strong>frastructure <strong>to</strong><br />
meet the requirement of<br />
NBTE.<br />
Ukekpe disclosed that<br />
the man<strong>age</strong>ment of the<br />
<strong>in</strong>stitution had been able<br />
<strong>to</strong> secure Tetfund special<br />
<strong>in</strong>tervention for the<br />
construction of Civil<br />
Eng<strong>in</strong>eer<strong>in</strong>g, Electrical/<br />
Electronic Eng<strong>in</strong>eer<strong>in</strong>g as<br />
well as Science<br />
Labora<strong>to</strong>ry Technology<br />
complex <strong>in</strong> its<br />
determ<strong>in</strong>ation <strong>to</strong> expand<br />
academic programmes <strong>in</strong><br />
the <strong>in</strong>stitution.<br />
He said: “The<br />
man<strong>age</strong>ment is work<strong>in</strong>g<br />
closely with the<br />
Govern<strong>in</strong>g Council <strong>to</strong><br />
<strong>in</strong>vite for a second time<br />

Save us from land grabbers,<br />
Rivers community begs Wike<br />

Rumuokurusi community <strong>in</strong><br />
Obio/Akpor Local<br />
Government Area of Rivers<br />
State, have pleaded with<br />
governor of the state, Mr<br />
Nyesom Wike, <strong>to</strong> save them<br />
from land grabbers.<br />
The community also urged<br />
the state government <strong>to</strong> treat<br />
anyone arrested for the<br />
offence as a crim<strong>in</strong>al,<br />
add<strong>in</strong>g that land thieves<br />
<strong>in</strong>vade the area with guns.<br />
The people of the<br />
community, who made the<br />
call <strong>in</strong> Port Harcourt<br />
yesterday, noted that land<br />
grabbers from a<br />
neighbour<strong>in</strong>g community<br />
<strong>in</strong> Igbo Etche, Etche LGA,<br />
have encroached on their<br />
ancestral homes, add<strong>in</strong>g<br />
their property.<br />
Speak<strong>in</strong>g, the paramount<br />
ruler of Omuwokerebe, Eze<br />
Standford Achor, noted that<br />
the land grabbers use<br />
assorted rifles <strong>to</strong> chase<br />
owners of the land from their<br />
property.<br />
Achor regretted that all<br />
efforts made <strong>to</strong> scare away<br />
the persons <strong>in</strong>volved had<br />
proved abortive, add<strong>in</strong>g<br />
that they (land grabbers)<br />
have also flouted court<br />
order which barred people<br />
from enter<strong>in</strong>g the land.<br />
He said: “As it stands,<br />
land grabbers have f<strong>in</strong>ished<br />
our land. They sell the land<br />
everyday. T<strong>his</strong> th<strong>in</strong>g started<br />
<strong>in</strong> 2016. There was a time<br />
they s<strong>to</strong>pped, but now they<br />
have started aga<strong>in</strong>. They<br />
have s<strong>old</strong> over 200 hectares<br />
of land.<br />
“There is order of court<br />
that barred people of Igbo<br />
Etche and Rumuokurusi<br />
from enter<strong>in</strong>g the land, but<br />
when you go there, you see<br />
boys with guns sell<strong>in</strong>g the<br />
same land.”<br />
Meanwhile, Chairman of<br />
Rumuokurusi Town<br />
Council, K<strong>in</strong>gsley Ejekwu,<br />
has called on Governor<br />
Wike <strong>to</strong> wade <strong>in</strong><strong>to</strong> the<br />
situation <strong>to</strong> ensure that the<br />
activities of land grabbers<br />
were put <strong>to</strong> s<strong>to</strong>p.<br />
He said: “We are call<strong>in</strong>g<br />
on the governor <strong>to</strong> come <strong>to</strong><br />
our aid. The boys are fast<br />
enter<strong>in</strong>g our ancestral<br />
homes. We don’t want <strong>to</strong> be<br />
evicted from our homes<br />
and we don’t want <strong>to</strong> carry<br />
guns <strong>to</strong> face them because<br />
if we do, that part of the<br />
state will become<br />
ungovernable.”<br />
