Light Rail: Apapa gridlock may spill over <strong>to</strong> Oyo, Amaechi warns By Adeola Badru IBADAN—THE M<strong>in</strong>ister of Transport, Rotimi Ameachi, yesterday, warned the Oyo State Government <strong>to</strong> be ready <strong>to</strong> take over the stress of traffic congestion that characterizes Oshodi/Apapa Expressway from the nation’s largest seaport immediately the Lagos-Ibadan corridor of the light rail project is completed. Amaechi, who was on an <strong>in</strong>spection of the project <strong>in</strong> Ibadan, noted that most conta<strong>in</strong>ers and commercial goods would be transported through the rail <strong>to</strong>wards Ibadan and it would ease traffic on the Oshodi/Apapa expressway. He, however, advised that the <strong>in</strong>com<strong>in</strong>g adm<strong>in</strong>istration of governor-elect, Mr. Seyi Mak<strong>in</strong>de <strong>to</strong> develop adjo<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g roads around the Ibadan Inland Dry Port <strong>to</strong> ease traffic around the area. You have journeyed well and I congratulate you and your family for your success. “Let me quickly add that the Lagos-Ibadan light rail project, on completion will ease the Apapa expressway gridlock <strong>in</strong> Lagos and my fear is that I don’t know if Oyo State government is ready for the shift of the gridlock <strong>to</strong> t<strong>his</strong> axis of Ibadan.” Ondo students shut down Akure over tuition fees By Dayo Johnson Afrom KURE—STUDENTS the Adekunle Ajas<strong>in</strong> University Akungba Akoko, AAUA, and Ondo State University of Science and Technology, OSUSTECH, Okitipupa, yesterday, disrupted both commercial and vehicular movement <strong>in</strong> Akure and called for a reduction <strong>in</strong> tuition fees by the state government. For hours, students from the state-owned <strong>in</strong>stitutions shut down Akure, the state capital protest<strong>in</strong>g the hike <strong>in</strong> their school fees. Man<strong>age</strong>ment of the two <strong>in</strong>stitutions had earlier shut the schools over students’ protest <strong>in</strong> April. The protest<strong>in</strong>g students displayed various placards with <strong>in</strong>scriptions like: No Reduction, No Resumption, Akeredolu Reduce or Resign, Education Must Be Free and Say No <strong>to</strong> N250, 000. Speak<strong>in</strong>g with newsmen, the students’ union president of AAUA, Samuel Adesomoju vowed that “the protest would cont<strong>in</strong>ue until Governor Oluwarotimi Akeredolu reduces tuition fees.” Adesomoju said: “The current fees of N250, 000 which was <strong>in</strong>creased last year has not brought any <strong>in</strong>frastructural development <strong>to</strong> <strong>in</strong>stitutions <strong>in</strong> the state. “We are here t<strong>his</strong> morn<strong>in</strong>g <strong>to</strong> make our demand known once aga<strong>in</strong>. We are tell<strong>in</strong>g Governor Akeredolu that our school fees must be reduced now because we will not resume if the fees are not reduced. “It is our right <strong>to</strong> have education but the governor is gradually tak<strong>in</strong>g it away from us with <strong>his</strong> policies. “If the governor wants <strong>to</strong> generate revenue, he should look elsewhere not our schools. “We are send<strong>in</strong>g him a clear mess<strong>age</strong> <strong>to</strong>day that we will not leave t<strong>his</strong> road until he reduces the fees and he should not th<strong>in</strong>k about open<strong>in</strong>g the schools without reduc<strong>in</strong>g tuition. We are go<strong>in</strong>g <strong>to</strong> resist it.” Also speak<strong>in</strong>g, a former NANS JCC chairman, Kowe said: “Education is our right and we are here fight<strong>in</strong>g for it. Speak<strong>in</strong>g yesterday <strong>in</strong> Abuja when he appeared before the Senate for hours at Plenary, M<strong>in</strong>ister of Health, Professor Isaac Adewole disclosed that secondary healthcare <strong>in</strong> the states had no staff, doc<strong>to</strong>rs, nurses and even <strong>in</strong> cases where they had, they were not paid, add<strong>in</strong>g that when they were even paid, they were paid only what he described as a fraction of what people get <strong>in</strong> tertiary health <strong>in</strong>stitutions. The m<strong>in</strong>ister expla<strong>in</strong>ed why the tertiary <strong>in</strong>stitutions are overstretched, not<strong>in</strong>g that there were states where <strong>in</strong> a general hospital, one f<strong>in</strong>ds only one doc<strong>to</strong>r and <strong>in</strong> some others, no doc<strong>to</strong>r is found. Adewole urged state governors <strong>to</strong> <strong>in</strong>vest <strong>in</strong> secondary healthcare if the sec<strong>to</strong>r must be improved on. However, he disclosed that fourteen states were yet <strong>to</strong> key <strong>in</strong><strong>to</strong> the Basic Health Provision Fund. Accord<strong>in</strong>g <strong>to</strong> the M<strong>in</strong>ister, only twenty- two states have so far registered for the fund. Professor Adewole listed Kebbi, Jigawa, Akwa Ibom, Cross River, Rivers, Gombe, Borno, Zamfara, Benue, Taraba, Ogun, Soko<strong>to</strong>, Ondo and Nasarawa as states yet <strong>to</strong> register for the fund. Before the appearance of the M<strong>in</strong>ister, the Sena<strong>to</strong>rs had gone <strong>in</strong><strong>to</strong> a closed door session which lasted for thirty m<strong>in</strong>utes. The appearance of the M<strong>in</strong>ister was sequel <strong>to</strong> <strong>his</strong> be<strong>in</strong>g summoned last week <strong>to</strong> brief the Sena<strong>to</strong>rs at plenary on the current state of facilities and healthcare services <strong>in</strong> <strong>Nigeria</strong>n Teach<strong>in</strong>g Hospitals. Resolutions of the Senate <strong>to</strong> summon the M<strong>in</strong>ister was sequel <strong>to</strong> a motion entitled, “Alarm<strong>in</strong>g report on poor quality of services <strong>in</strong> <strong>Nigeria</strong>n Teach<strong>in</strong>g Hospitals” sponsored by David Umaru (Niger East). Present<strong>in</strong>g the motion, Sena<strong>to</strong>r Umaru, lamented widespread cases of poor electricity supply, obsolete medical equipment, decayed <strong>in</strong>frastructure and other fac<strong>to</strong>rs which, made it extremely difficult for <strong>Nigeria</strong>n Teach<strong>in</strong>g Hospitals <strong>to</strong> provide tertiary healthcare <strong>to</strong> patients with complex ailments such as cancer, kidney failure etc. Meanwhile, the Senate President, Dr. Bukola Saraki however, lamented that <strong>in</strong>spite of the huge sums of money for teach<strong>in</strong>g hospitals across the country, <strong>Nigeria</strong>ns die everyday. Saraki who stressed the need for the budgetary releases <strong>to</strong> be looked at <strong>in</strong> order <strong>to</strong> fund the health sec<strong>to</strong>r, said that there was the urgent need <strong>to</strong> improve on releases, add<strong>in</strong>g that there must be adequate releases. By Daud Olatunji ABEOKUTA—SCORES of aggrieved residents of Ogun State have rejected the appo<strong>in</strong>tment of some of the 75 coronet Obas enthroned by Governor Ibikunle Amosun. The protesters, who were drawn from Eruwon Kajola <strong>in</strong> Obafemi- Owode local government, Olohunda <strong>in</strong> Abeokuta North and Ibese <strong>in</strong> Yewa-North local government area of the state among others, vowed <strong>to</strong> prevent the controversial Obas from enter<strong>in</strong>g their communities. Amosun had promoted 75 vill<strong>age</strong> chiefs, otherwise known as Baale, <strong>to</strong> coronet Obas. Speak<strong>in</strong>g on behalf of the people of Kajola, the Oluwo of Eruwon, Chief Adisa Soyoye and Balogun of Eruwon, Chief Tade Sodipo lamented that the appo<strong>in</strong>tment of the new Olu of Kajola, Chief Akanji Sowonoye did not have their <strong>in</strong>put. They described the appo<strong>in</strong>tment of Sowonoye as illegal and shock<strong>in</strong>g. Also, residents of Olorunda Community <strong>in</strong> Abeokuta North Local Government area of the state st<strong>age</strong>d a peaceful protest seek<strong>in</strong>g the removal of their traditional ruler, Oba Segun Ogunsola for allegedly not belong<strong>in</strong>g <strong>to</strong> the community. T<strong>his</strong> is why we shall not hesitate <strong>to</strong> listen <strong>to</strong> ideas that will drive the state forward.
