Man nabbed smuggling hard drugs into Kuje Prisons

ABUJA—A man, Clement
Jacob, of Deidei village in
Abuja, who was about to smuggle
substances suspected to be Indian
hemp into Kuje Medium Security
Prisons in Abuja, has been
arrested.
Jacob hid the suspected
substance he was to deliver to an
inmate of the prison, one Emeka
Onyejikachi, in a sandal.
Public Relations Officer of the
Federal Capital Territory, FCT,
Command of the Nigerian Prisons
Service, Humphrey Chukwuedo,
in a statement, yesterday, said:
“The inmate of Kuje Prison,
Onyejikachi, is in custody for a
case of possession of hard drugs.”
Luck, however, ran out on Jacob
when he exchanged his sandals
with that of the inmate after his
session of prison visit.
According to Chukwuedo,
“Inspector Hussain Ibrahim, the
officer in charge of the visiting
area, noticed the quick exchange
of footwear and requested for
another search after the visiting
session was over.

Hussain carefully tore open the

KATSINA —NO fewer than
34 persons were reportedly
killed by bandits in three local
governments areas of Batsari,
Danmusa and Faskari in Katsina
State.
Locals in the areas said 18 were
killed in Yargamji, Batsari Local
Government; five in Mara
Zamfarawa, Danmusa Local
Government, and 11 in Sabon
Layi village, Faskari Local
Government.
Scores were reportedly said to
have sustained degrees of
injuries, while some were still
missing and their livestock carted
away by the bandits.
Some residents of Batsari, one
of the areas frequently attacked
have, staged a protest to the
government house with corpses of
victims of the attack, where they
were received by Governor Aminu
Masari.
The governor was moved to
tears upon seeing the corpse
mostly youths.
Eyewitnesses and survivors of
the attack in Batsari, who were
among the protester, said 18
persons were killed, many were
still being recovered and others
missing.
They said the bandits came on
motorcycles and attacked them on
their farmlands.
One of them said: “We were told
on phone, as we were at the
Government House, that bodies
were being recovered and
conveyed to the palace of
traditional leaders. 10 others were
still missing.
“We started with a visit to our
District Head with the corpses to

On interrogation, Jacob, who
feigned ignorance, said one Mrs
Emeka had called him to assist her
in paying Mr. Emeka a visit. He
was also instructed to exchange his
footwear with the inmate before
leaving the premises.
Chukwuedo added: “The

Aformer Assistant Comptroller
General of Nigeria Customs,
Bridget Okafor, was yesterday
arraigned by operatives of the
Economic and Financial Crimes
Commission, EFCC, before a
Federal Capital Territory, FCT,
High Court, over alleged N3 billion
fraud.
Okafor, who is currently facing a
13-count charge bordering on
abuse of office, was arraigned
before Justice Venchak S. Gaba of
FCT High Court, Kwali.
The charge reads: “That you,
Bridget Okafor, while being
employed in the public service and
serving as Assistant Comptroller
General of Nigeria Customs
Service in charge of Finance and
the public and family members
of inmates of their responsibility
in ensuring that the inmates are
properly reformed and
rehabilitated.
“The Controller of Prisons
pledged the commitment of the
officers and men of the
Command to rid prisons in the
command of illicit transactions
that are capable of
compromising security and
discipline in the Service.”

of Ramadan. We live in fear.

call the security agencies, they
don’t respond to our calls.”
Contacted, spokesman of Katsina
State Police Command, SP Gambo
Isah, said only five were killed in
Faskari, but was yet to confirm
attacks in the other two
councils.
According to him, “on the
Faskari incident, a group of
Yansakai from Sabon Layi
village, Faskari, went into the
forest and confronted the
bandits since yesterday and did
not report back.
“Two corpses were recovered
and buried by the villagers
yesterday. A search party led by
the DPO of Faskari recovered
three others inside the forest. A
bandits camp was also
discovered abandoned.
Investigation is ongoing.”
At press time, the Police is yet
to respond to enquiries on the
Batsari and Danmusa attacks.
