Man nabbed smuggl<strong>in</strong>g hard drugs <strong>in</strong><strong>to</strong> Kuje Prisons<br />

Jacob, of Deidei vill<strong>age</strong> <strong>in</strong><br />
Abuja, who was about <strong>to</strong> smuggle<br />
substances suspected <strong>to</strong> be Indian<br />
hemp <strong>in</strong><strong>to</strong> Kuje Medium Security<br />
Prisons <strong>in</strong> Abuja, has been<br />
arrested.<br />
Jacob hid the suspected<br />
substance he was <strong>to</strong> deliver <strong>to</strong> an<br />
<strong>in</strong>mate of the prison, one Emeka<br />
Onyejikachi, <strong>in</strong> a sandal.<br />

Federal Capital Terri<strong>to</strong>ry, FCT,<br />
Command of the <strong>Nigeria</strong>n Prisons<br />
Service, Humphrey Chukwuedo,<br />
<strong>in</strong> a statement, yesterday, said:<br />
“The <strong>in</strong>mate of Kuje Prison,<br />
Onyejikachi, is <strong>in</strong> cus<strong>to</strong>dy for a<br />
case of possession of hard drugs.”<br />
Luck, however, ran out on Jacob<br />
when he exchanged <strong>his</strong> sandals<br />
with that of the <strong>in</strong>mate after <strong>his</strong><br />
session of prison visit.<br />
Accord<strong>in</strong>g <strong>to</strong> Chukwuedo,<br />
“Inspec<strong>to</strong>r Hussa<strong>in</strong> Ibrahim, the<br />
officer <strong>in</strong> charge of the visit<strong>in</strong>g<br />
area, noticed the quick exchange<br />
of footwear and requested for<br />
another search after the visit<strong>in</strong>g<br />
session was over.<br />

K<strong>AT</strong>SINA —NO fewer than<br />
34 persons were reportedly<br />
killed by bandits <strong>in</strong> three local<br />
governments areas of Batsari,<br />
Danmusa and Faskari <strong>in</strong> Kats<strong>in</strong>a<br />
State.<br />
Locals <strong>in</strong> the areas said 18 were<br />
killed <strong>in</strong> Yargamji, Batsari Local<br />
Government; five <strong>in</strong> Mara<br />
Zamfarawa, Danmusa Local<br />
Government, and 11 <strong>in</strong> Sabon<br />
Layi vill<strong>age</strong>, Faskari Local<br />
Government.<br />
Scores were reportedly said <strong>to</strong><br />
have susta<strong>in</strong>ed degrees of<br />
<strong>in</strong>juries, while some were still<br />
miss<strong>in</strong>g and their lives<strong>to</strong>ck carted<br />
away by the bandits.<br />
Some residents of Batsari, one<br />
of the areas frequently attacked<br />
have, st<strong>age</strong>d a protest <strong>to</strong> the<br />
government house with corpses of<br />
victims of the attack, where they<br />
were received by Governor Am<strong>in</strong>u<br />
Masari.<br />
The governor was moved <strong>to</strong><br />
tears upon see<strong>in</strong>g the corpse<br />
mostly youths.<br />
Eyewitnesses and survivors of<br />
the attack <strong>in</strong> Batsari, who were<br />
among the protester, said 18<br />
persons were killed, many were<br />
still be<strong>in</strong>g recovered and others<br />
miss<strong>in</strong>g.<br />
They said the bandits came on<br />
mo<strong>to</strong>rcycles and attacked them on<br />
their farmlands.<br />
One of them said: “We were <strong>to</strong>ld<br />
on phone, as we were at the<br />
Government House, that bodies<br />
were be<strong>in</strong>g recovered and<br />
conveyed <strong>to</strong> the palace of<br />
traditional leaders. 10 others were<br />
still miss<strong>in</strong>g.<br />
“We started with a visit <strong>to</strong> our<br />
District Head with the corpses <strong>to</strong><br />

On <strong>in</strong>terrogation, Jacob, who<br />
feigned ignorance, said one Mrs<br />
Emeka had called him <strong>to</strong> assist her<br />
<strong>in</strong> pay<strong>in</strong>g Mr. Emeka a visit. He<br />
was also <strong>in</strong>structed <strong>to</strong> exchange <strong>his</strong><br />
footwear with the <strong>in</strong>mate before<br />
leav<strong>in</strong>g the premises.<br />

Bridget Okafor, was yesterday<br />
arraigned by operatives of the<br />
Economic and F<strong>in</strong>ancial Crimes<br />
Commission, EFCC, before a<br />
Federal Capital Terri<strong>to</strong>ry, FCT,<br />
High Court, over alleged N3 billion<br />
fraud.<br />
Okafor, who is currently fac<strong>in</strong>g a<br />
13-count charge border<strong>in</strong>g on<br />
abuse of office, was arraigned<br />
before Justice Venchak S. Gaba of<br />
FCT High Court, Kwali.<br />
The charge reads: “That you,<br />
Bridget Okafor, while be<strong>in</strong>g<br />
employed <strong>in</strong> the public service and<br />
serv<strong>in</strong>g as Assistant Comptroller<br />
General of <strong>Nigeria</strong> Cus<strong>to</strong>ms<br />
Service <strong>in</strong> charge of F<strong>in</strong>ance and<br />
the public and family members<br />
of <strong>in</strong>mates of their responsibility<br />
<strong>in</strong> ensur<strong>in</strong>g that the <strong>in</strong>mates are<br />
properly reformed and<br />
rehabilitated.<br />
“The Controller of Prisons<br />
pledged the commitment of the<br />
officers and men of the<br />
Command <strong>to</strong> rid prisons <strong>in</strong> the<br />
command of illicit transactions<br />
that are capable of<br />
compromis<strong>in</strong>g security and<br />
discipl<strong>in</strong>e <strong>in</strong> the Service.”<br />

“We have about 30 mosques <strong>in</strong><br />
our area, but I can tell you that you<br />
can hardily f<strong>in</strong>d people pray<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong><br />
three of them at night <strong>in</strong> the month<br />
of Ramadan. We live <strong>in</strong> fear.<br />
“They prevented us from rear<strong>in</strong>g<br />
lives<strong>to</strong>ck and farm<strong>in</strong>g. When we<br />
call the security <strong>age</strong>ncies, they<br />
don’t respond <strong>to</strong> our calls.”<br />
Contacted, spokesman of Kats<strong>in</strong>a<br />
State Police Command, SP Gambo<br />
Isah, said only five were killed <strong>in</strong><br />
Faskari, but was yet <strong>to</strong> confirm<br />
attacks <strong>in</strong> the other two<br />
councils.<br />
Accord<strong>in</strong>g <strong>to</strong> him, “on the<br />
Faskari <strong>in</strong>cident, a group of<br />
Yansakai from Sabon Layi<br />
vill<strong>age</strong>, Faskari, went <strong>in</strong><strong>to</strong> the<br />
forest and confronted the<br />
bandits s<strong>in</strong>ce yesterday and did<br />
not report back.<br />
“Two corpses were recovered<br />
and buried by the vill<strong>age</strong>rs<br />
yesterday. A search party led by<br />
the DPO of Faskari recovered<br />
three others <strong>in</strong>side the forest. A<br />
bandits camp was also<br />
discovered abandoned.<br />
Investigation is ongo<strong>in</strong>g.”<br />
At press time, the Police is yet<br />
<strong>to</strong> respond <strong>to</strong> enquiries on the<br />
Batsari and Danmusa attacks.<br />
