Speed limit
plan ‘great
for safety’
– residents
• By Georgia O’Connor-Harding
A PLAN to lower the speed limits
for roads in the south-west has
been applauded by Halswell and
Hornby residents.
The city council is seeking
feedback on lowering the limits
along several roads in the area.
Under the suggested changes,
most roads would have a 60km/h
limit, while some – Halswell
Junction Rd and Kennedys Bush
Rd, as well as parts of Cashmere
Rd and Hendersons Rd – may
be changed to 50km/h. John
Paterson Drive and roads in the
new Cloverden subdivision, off
Murphys Rd, have a proposed
40km/h limit.
A 60km/h speed limit is
proposed for Marshs, Shands,
Springs, Hodgens, Fountains,
Whincops, Downies, Quaifes,
Sabys, Sutherlands and Hoon
Hay Valley Rds, as well as
Cashmere Rd (between
Kennedys Bush Rd and the
existing 50km/h zone north of
Hoon Hay Valley Rd).
The proposed changes have
been welcomed by residents.
Hornby’s Mark Peters fully
supports the plan.
“It is great for safety on Springs
Rd, he said.
YOU HAVE to applaud Eva Haerewa and
Jazz Thorman in their bid to make cycling
safer (see page 1).
Eva has very personal reasons why – her
older sister Sharla was tragically killed
when she was hit by a truck in Lincoln Rd while biking to work.
Her death highlighted how vulnerable cyclists are on our roads.
And Eva herself has had a close call. She was knocked off her
bike while on the way to school, but luckily escaped with minor
injuries.
So Eva and Jazz have via funding been able to hand out 75
high-vis vests to other pupils at their school, with a design to
make them more “cooler” for kids of their age.
Good stuff.
Cyclist rides through cancer
Wins gold
10 months
after surgery
DENNIS PARKER hasn’t let
cancer get in the way of winning
gold medals.
The St Martins resident took
out the 65-69 category at the
New Zealand age group M7 road
cycling national championships.
Less than a year earlier in June,
he had surgery to remove several
tumours after his hairdresser
noticed a lump on his neck.
“This is a result that for most
of last year I would not have
thought possible,” he said.
Tests revealed he had cancer
in his tonsils with an additional
tumour in his neck.
Only a week prior to his
diagnosis, Mr Parker won his age
category in Le Race.
After his operation he couldn’t
eat, drink, speak or swallow,
but he worked on re-building
his health and fitness by doing
45min walks every second day.
After six weeks he was back on
the bike training.
Mr Parker said it’s been a
challenging time, both physically
and emotionally, dealing with
cancer and the post-operative
recovery process.
CHAMPION: Dennis Parker won the 65-69 category at the New Zealand age group M7
road cycling national championships just 10 months after he had surgery to remove several
tumours.
The right side of his neck and
his shoulder are still numb due
to nerve damage, but he said he
feels about 90 per cent back to
normal.
“Maybe more like 100 per cent
when cycling.”
He has been able to restart his
governance and management
support business in the notfor-profit
sector, and has added
another area of support – health,
cancer and recovery.
He has also reached out to
Canterbury District Health
Board to thank everyone
involved in his care and recovery.
“To my medical support team –
your interventions, support and
advice has been awesome,” he
said.
Keeping kids
Speed limits under review
safe on bikes
•From page 1
The nursing student was on her
way to work when a 75-year-old
truck driver took a turn without
seeing her. She was hit and pulled
under the truck. The driver
pleaded guilty to careless driving
causing death and was sentenced
to pay reparations and disqualified
from driving for
eight months.
Last year Eva was
also knocked off
her bike by a vehicle
while she was cycling
to school. She was
Sharla
lucky to come away
with minor injuries,
but said she was
shaken after the incident.
“These are the reasons why
I decided it was important to
stand up and do something that
could help save the lives of others,
especially kids who cycle or scooter
to school,” said Eva.
With funding help from Youth
Voice Canterbury’s ‘big ideas
fund’, Eva and Jazz have gifted
75 fluro vests to pupils who cycle
to school. They are adorned with
a surfer-inspired design and the
message ‘marutau – be safe’. “It
was important to us that the design
would be seen as cool by other kids
to overcome the ‘that’s naff’ thing
that stops us from wearing this
there is more development in
the area and there is more traffic
he said.
His views were backed by the
chairman Mike Mora, who said
it is an “ideal opportunity” due
to the build-up of residential
density and developments.
Mr McFarlane said
CATCHMENT: The flood risk in Woolston and Linwood has been reduced.
Drainage scheme reduces flood risk
A $19 MILLION land drainage
scheme has reduced the flood
risk for dozens of properties in
the Woolston and Linwood area.
Thousands of native trees and
plants have been planted in Te
Oranga Waikura Urban Forest,
which sits off Ferry Rd and covers
2.75ha.
The forest, which is open to
the public, acts as a storage basin
in heavy rain events, reducing
the frequency and severity of
flooding in the surrounding
area.
As part of the flood mitigation
work, Bells Creek has also
been realigned and naturalised
through Linwood College.
The realignment of the creek
means Linwood College has
additional buildable land that it
can use to accommodate future
growth.
The sports field at Edmonds
Park can also be used as a
stormwater basin.
It has been excavated by about
1m to form a stormwater basin,
which can be used to store excess
water when it rains heavily.
A new stormwater pump
station has also been built in
Richardson Tce.
Its recent commissioning
marks the completion of the
Bells Creek flood mitigation
work.
The pump station is important
because it allows the catchment
to drain when water levels in the
Heathcote River are high, city
council land drainage manager
Keith Davison said.
“Without the pump station,
the existing gravity outfall
cannot discharge water from the
catchment until the water level
in the Heathcote drops lower
than the outfall pipe, which
means water backs up in the
catchment causing flooding.”
Walls go up at new school
• By Louis Day
THE FIRST walls of the new
Redcliffs School went up
recently.
Pupils watched on as the precast
concrete walls were placed
on May 17 .
Principal Rose McInerney
was delighted with the progress
being made.
“After a lot of uncertainty, it
is great to see that it is definitely
going to happen. There were so
many bridges that we had to
cross to get here, but it is great
knowing that we will have our
school return to the community
next year,” she said.
Pupils will move into
the new school on April 27 and
the official opening will be held
in June.
Prime Minister Jacinda
Ardern said she will “do
everything she can” to be at the
opening of the school in a letter
to pupils.
Ms McInerney is confident Ms
Ardern will be there.
“We are pretty sure that she
will be there. We are really
excited that she wants to come,
she knows that we have been on
the biggest journey to get here,”
she said.
to keep the school open, then-
Education Minister Hekia Parata
It was decided the school
would relocate to Redcliffs
Lay of the Land
Brent Forbes
Brent Forbes exhibits his latest work in a solo show
‘Lay of the Land’ at Little River Gallery which opens
Saturday June 1st.
Brent writes about his painting practice. “It’s like
driving somewhere. A shape, a curve in the road or a
certain piece of light comes to your attention then just
as quickly disappears in the rear-view mirror. Several
kilometres down the road the same thing happens
again, each new vista either forgotten or somehow
remembered, an accumulation of random memories.
Upon arrival you now have a loose set of images
in your mind – some can be tied to a certain
place, others cannot – but either way there has
been a conscious and unconscious engagement
with your surroundings.
Then you head into the studio and use these points
of reference to start working. But working is
something else. There is experimentation, conflict
and resolution. There is engagement and restraint.
There is a journey with its own rules.
Sometimes you end back up where you started, but
if you are lucky you can end up somewhere new –
discovered because you had an idea of where you
wanted to go but as you set off you threw the map
out the window.”
Fence removal pleases
SOUTHERN VIEW
Local
News
Now
Fire rages, homes at risk
• By Louis Day
THE FENCE at the bottom
of Balmoral Hill has been
removed.
The fence, which was put there
following the February 22, 2011,
earthquake, was removed on
Tuesday after the city council
found it was no longer needed.
Over the last
18 months the
city council
has been
undertaking
a review and
clean-up of the
Christine
Toner
fences remaining
around the city
post-earthquake.
“There was a delay in
removing the fence as there
was a redundant drain that
had to be made safe. As this
has happened, and other
maintenance was undertaken
(trimming of vegetation), the
fence has been removed,’’ said
city council delivery transport
and planning manager Lynette
Ellis.
Redcliffs Residents Association
chairwoman Christine
Toner was delighted to see the
fence removed.
“It is just fantastic, we are just
absolutely thrilled about it,” she
said.
MAKEOVER: Contractors have removed the fence at the
bottom of Balmoral Hill.
Linwood-Central-Heathcote
Community Board member
Darrell Latham thought the
removal of the fence would
enhance the entrance into the
village.
“This is a such stunning
location
with beautiful cliffs
and coastal areas through which
thousands of people transit
daily. The removal of the fence
and the trimming of the
vegetation is really positive
and it is another box ticked
in the return to normality for
residents on this side of town,”
he said.
ACTION: The design for the $22 million pool and community
facility on the corner of Smith St and Linwood Ave has been
approved.
Linwood Pool design signed off
• By Matt Slaughter
A CONCEPT design for the
new $22 million Linwood Pool
complex has been approved.
The site is set to open in late
2021. The facility, which was
signed off by the Linwood-
Central-Heathcote Community
Board, will be built on the
corner of Smith St and Linwood
Ave. It will include a 25m lane
pool, deep-water pool with an
area for jumping off, family spa
pool, learn to swim pool, toddler
pool and a water deck.
There will also be an outdoor
community space with a
gathering area, picnic tables,
tennis and multi-use courts,
cycle stands and car parks.
The facility will be integrated
with Linwood Park and
offer a range of indoor and
outdoor recreational activities.
Community meeting rooms and
a kitchen will also be included in
the design.
Linwood Ward city
councillor Yani Johanson
said conversations about the
possibility
of building a
facility like this
in Linwood had
been happening
for about 20
years.
It would be a
great asset for
the community
once it was
Yani
Johanson
constructed, Cr Johanson said.
“It does point to a really
significant investment into a
community that certainly has
been overdue for it.”
Community benefits from basketball court
Fire rages, homes at risk
A HOON Hay basketball court
has been transformed into a
well-lit community hub, thanks
to a group of motivated young
men.
New floodlights, a sheltered
barbecue area, tiered seating and
extra picnic tables and rubbish
bins have been added to the
basketball court at Hoon Hay
Park, which has also been given a
fresh coat of paint.
The group of 10 Pacific Island
youths involved, who are
now aged 19 and have known
each other since they started
school together at Rowley
Avenue School, are all keen
basketball players and have been
campaigning for improvements
to their local court for four years.
With support from the Cross
Over Trust and Spreydon
Youth Community Trust, they
started fundraising when they
were in their mid-teens before
approaching the Spreydon-
Cashmere Community Board
for help.
They spoke at a board
meeting and later took part in
the city council’s Annual Plan
workshops to advocate for their
ideas, accompanied by their
mums. Their vision was to make
Hoon Hay park a safe, well-used
space, which would be appealing
to all generations of the local
community.
Along with financial support
from the community board and
the city council, they have also
received grants from the Rata
Foundation, Rotary Club and
Lions Foundation.
Michael Pule, 19, who has been
involved since the project began
and is now training to become
a youth worker himself, says he
is proud the group’s ideas have
been listened to and supported.
“The main part for me
is having the adults and
community back us, and now
seeing it coming to life. I’m
pretty pumped that we’ve had
a youth voice and been listened
to and been able to create
a safe environment for the
community.”
Basketball is so popular in
the area that Mr Pule and other
members of the group have
started organising a Hoon Hay
Hoops community basketball
competition. The last event in
2017 attracted about 200 people.
Hoon Hay Hoops will be
held in October using the new
UNDER
the newly-lit
basketball
grandstand, lighting and other
facilities, and is likely to be even
bigger. The idea has also taken
off in other areas, with a Hornby
Hoops competition under
way and one about to start in
Bromley.
Cross Over Trust community
worker Roy Kenneally said the
youths involved are “stoked”
with the final result after years of
effort.
“It’s a community-led
project and gives power back
to the people, especially in a
community like ours, which has
twice as many kids as most other
suburbs.
“They’re role models for the
next generation and they’ve
shown what can be done when
you take ownership. They’ve
learnt that if you really want
something then you have to work
hard to get it.”
City council community
recreation adviser Emma Pavey,
who has been involved with
the group for several years, said
what they’re doing is “absolutely
exceptional.”
“This is a real grassroots
project that’s been driven
completely by these young
people. Their commitment and
energy is fantastic. They’re so
much fun to be around and
they’re always willing to help
out. They’re quite thoughtful
boys and it’s fantastic that it’s all
coming together for them.”
Mrs Pavey encouraged the
young men to take part in the
city council-run Get Set Go
workshops to learn more about
organising community events.
They have also helped out with
the Hoon Hay Fiesta and the
Rugby League Pacific Series.
“They’ve become really
well-organised and they know
how to run things themselves
now.”
Hopes for trampoline success
SPORT
• By Jacob Page
HORNBY’S Olympia
Gymsport’s Lauren Sheere is
aiming to earn a medal on the
trampoline at the Australian
Gymnastics Championships,
this week in Melbourne.
The Heaton
Intermediate
student
and national
championship
medallist
made the
final in the
Lauren Sheere
under-15
age-group
at the same event last year but
that was while competing up a
grade against more experienced
competitors.
Lauren will compete in the
individual category as well as
the synchro event in the international
youth grade, where she
will team up with an Aucklandbased
friend.
“The two things are form
and height, they get measured
on their time of flight and how
long they are in the air and also
where they land, her mum,’’
Sandy Sheere said.
“It’s a really big competition,
so I’d like to make the final
first which is the top eight and
then push for the podium from
Championships last year.
there,’’ Lauren said.
“Because I over-qualified last
year, I was moved up a grade
and while I still made the final
which was awesome, I’m looking
forward to competing with my
own age group this year.”
“She had a real trade-off to
compete in the higher grade,
because she had a real chance of
medalling in her usual grade,’’
Mrs Sheere said.
Lauren trains and competes
for Olympia and can train for
up to 12 hours a week in preparation
for the event.
“I don’t get much time at home
sometimes but I ride horses as
well but training is worth it,”
Lauren said.
“The last two months has been
some of the best training I’ve
had and I’ve picked up a new
skills, so I’m feeling really good.
“Winning a medal would
be worth it, it would be really
cool. One day I’d love to go to
the Olympics but that will be in
a few years,” Lauren said.
“My main goal is to qualify for
the world champs in November
next year.”
TWO WOOLSTON boxers have
warmed up for the South Island
Golden Gloves at Kaiapoi this
weekend by winning medals as
part of the New Zealand team at
the Arafura Games in Darwin.
Chrissy Reid won gold in the
women’s middleweight 75kg class
while Trevor Swainson earned a
bronze medal in the men’s 81kg
class.
Reid beat South Australia’s
Laura Wright in the semifinals
and won the final against
Queensland’s Rhiana Kerr.
Swainson lost his semi-final
against Queensland’s Roger
Grant.
The Arafura Games saw boxers
representing Australian states
compete in various weight classes.
Both boxers will be aiming to
at least replicate their results at
the South Island Golden Gloves at
push their claims for the nationals
later in the year.
Swainson, a 26-year-old builder
“I know I lost the fight but I
was actually really happy with
how I performed, it was a great
opportunity.
Swainson has boxed competitively
for the past three years and
is a former South Island champion.
Reid, has only been in the
sport for the past 18 months and
described her time in Darwin as
surreal.
The Irish-born engineer said
it was special to represent New
Zealand for the first time.
“To wear the silver fern and
come away with the win was
something I couldn’t believe,” she
said.
“It took a while to sink in.”
Reid made the Canterbury
team last year and she hoped to
replicate the efforts once again
this year.
“I got into boxing for fitness
but also I like having something
to train for, an end goal and
fighting an opponent at the end of
a training camp does that for me.”
Tasty Middle Eastern takeaways
a popular choice in Halswell
Now firmly established as one of
Halswell’s most popular takeaway food
outlets, Souvlaki King offers an extensive
range of authentic Middle Eastern food
that’s fresh, healthy and delicious.
In the last few weeks they have introduced
two new items to the menu, offering even
more choice for customers. These are the $11
Snack Box, which comprises scrumptious
hot chips with lamb, beef, chicken, falafel
or mixed, topped with cheese and barbeque
sauce or your choice of chili sauce, and the
traditional Shawarma, which is a roll filled
with meat, vegetarian falafel or feta cheese,
and topped with barbeque or your choice
of chili sauce. This is also $11, or $14 with
hot chips.
Both these items are proving very popular
for lunch, the business owners say.
The souvlakis are available in three
portion sizes – small, large or triple, with
a choice of chicken, lamb, beef, kofta or
falafel and served with coleslaw, lettuce,
tzatziki, hummus and your choice of chili
or barbeque sauce.
All ingredients used at
Souvlaki King are sourced
locally to ensure freshness and
quality, including the meats,
which are supplied by the local
butchery.
The falafel is freshly prepared
every day to their own secret recipe,
and is another very popular item,
even for non-vegetarian customers,
and all the salads and sauces are
prepared on the premises every day.
For a sweet taste, they offer the traditional
baklava, and cake slices,
while beverages
include a selection
of coffees, teas, hot
chocolate, milk shakes
and thick shakes.
Souvlaki King has just
launched its website, www.
souvlakiking.nz, so you can
now order online and your
food will be ready to pick up
and pay for when you arrive.
You can also order by phone,
(03) 322-4888. Pre-ordering is
especially recommended on the
busy Friday and Saturday nights.
Souvlaki King is located at 1
Kennedys Bush Road, with plenty
of parking outside. Opening hours
are Monday to Thursday 10am-8pm,
Friday 10am-9pm, Saturday 11am-
WORKSAFE NEW Zealand
has b en a proached in a bid to
fina ly repair the potholes in New
Brighton’s Hawke St car park.
Coastal-Burw od Ward city
counci lor David East wants
WorkSafe to pre sure the car
park’s private owners into
repairing the potholes which are
a “trip and vehicle” hazard.
WorkSafe chief inspector
a se sments southern Da ren
Handforth said it may be able to
take action under the Health and
Safety at Work Act 2015, “as a
person conducting a busine s or
undertaking.”
Mr Handforth said WorkSafe
is aware of the concerns raised by
Cr East abou the car park.
“WorkSafe has completed
an a se sment visi to the site
and is engaging with the owner
to advise them that it is their
responsibility to manage their
risks a propriately.”
Different parts of the car park
are owned by various people
and the Coastal-Burw od
Community Board recently
wrote to them about its concerns
around health and safety.
Cr East said the bi gest i sue
in the past has b en ge ting in
touch with the landlords and
owners and ge ting them to
agr e to anything. “The board
a preciates that multi-ownership
of the parking space may present
a difficulty in co-ordinating
repair/resurfacing but felt obliged
to pa s these concerns onto you,”
said the le ter.
One reply has b en received so
far from an owner who is wi ling
to discu s the i sue. However, a l
the owners would have to agr e
to undertake work.
Cr East said there had b en
a “number of incidences” in
the car park of people injuring
themselves which had gone
unreported.
“I’ve always though that it
has b en quite amazing that we
haven’t had any serious a cidents
or senior citizens perhaps
tri ping in those potholes and
doing themselve some damage.”
He is confiden the new
a proach wi l bring results.
“I think the WorkSafe
involvement may prove to be the
lever that we are l oking for.”
New bid to fix potholes
Action looms
THE PAPANUI-I nes
Community Board has taken the
rare step of starting a petition
to figh the city council over
funding.
Signatures are being co lected
in a bid to get funding for a community
facility in Shirley.
It comes after the city council
removed funding for the centre
pla ned for Shirley Rd, near the
intersection with Hi ls Rd. This
was the site of the former community
centre, which was badly
damaged in the February 2,
20 1, earthquake.
The removal o funding
prompted community board
chairwoman Ali Jones to threaten
to stand down, citing it as her “die
in the ditch” project.
Ms Jone said the board’s role
is to represen the community,
and by gathering signatures from
residents, it was fulfi ling that
role.
“One of the roles of a community
board is to represent and act
as advocate for the interests of its
community and this is what we
are doing. The LTP and annual
plans are a l about lo bying the
council.”
Apartments’
sign-off
this week
• By Sarla Donovan
THE OWNERS of Sumner’s Cave
Rock Apartments ar expecting the
Earthquake Commi sion to sign-off
on a se tlement agr emen this w ek.
Body corporate chairman Mike
White said the group had gone
into mediation with IAG and EQC
on February 20, and signed off
on a deal with IAG on February
2 – coincidenta ly seven years
to the day after the February 2,
20 1, earthquake. However, they
are waiting for EQC to sign the
agr ement.
“Given that EQC actua ly drafted
the agr ement, there’ l be no
problem with them doing that.”
The apartment suffered damage
in the February and June, 20 1,
earthquakes and were demolished in
late 2012. In 2016, IAG’s offer of the
difference betw en indemnity value,
$10 mi lion, and the sum insured,
$16 mi lion, was rejected by the body
corporate.
The mediation agr ement
prevented Mr White from disclosing
the se tlement amount, but he said it
involved the two parties paying “a bit
more money than they’d wanted to
earlier.”
The preparation for this year’s
met in Auckland every two
Mr Garth, who has b en a
competition brought back his
“Doing a l thi stuff and
ideas, it just brings that flair
back for you,” he said.
Mr Garth hopes to own a
“In two years’ time, we’ l be
AN U PER Ri carton butcher
above his Au sie rivals at an
international competition.
Elite Meats owner Corey
Winder was named in the a l
star team a the World Butchers’
Cha lenge in Northern Ireland.
Mr Winder and his team, the
Pure South Sharp Blacks, which
includes W olston butcher
Jeremy Garth, finished second
in the competition.
He said the cha lenge started
as a “transtasman test match”
seven years ago.
The preparation for this
year’s World Butchers’ Challenge
was intense as the team
members met in Auckland
every two months for lengthy
w ekend practices. Mr Winder
said coming second against 1
other countries was a “fantastic”
result.
“To get second behind Ireland
was a huge achievement and to
be ahead of Australia is an
even bi ger thing for us,” he
said.
But Mr Winder admires the
Australian team.
“Those guys over there
[Australia] are on top of their
game, they do a g od job,” he
said.
“And it just showcases that
New Zealand has got some
of the best butchers in the
world,” he said.
WORKSAFE NEW Zealand
has b en a proached in a bid to
fina ly repair the potholes in New
Brighton’s Hawke St car park.
Coastal-Burw od Ward city
counci lor David East wants
WorkSafe to pre sure the car
park’s private owners into
repairing the potholes which are
a “trip and vehicle” hazard.
WorkSafe chief inspector
a se sments southern Da ren
Handforth said it may be able to
take action under the Health and
Safety at Work Act 2015, “as a
person conducting a busine s or
undertaking.”
Mr Handforth said WorkSafe
is aware of the concerns raised by
Cr East abou the car park.
“WorkSafe has completed
an a se sment visi to the site
and is engaging with the owner
to advise them that it is their
responsibility to manage their
risks a propriately.”
Different parts of the car park
are owned by various people
and the Coastal-Burw od
Community Board recently
wrote to them about its concerns
around health and safety.
Cr East said the bi gest i sue
in the past has b en ge ting in
touch with the landlords and
owners and ge ting them to
agr e to anything. “The board
a preciates that multi-ownership
of the parking space may present
a difficulty in co-ordinating
repair/resurfacing but felt obliged
to pa s these concerns onto you,”
said the le ter.
One reply has b en received so
far from an owner who is wi ling
to discu s the i sue. However, all
the owners would have to agr e
to undertake work.
Cr East said there had b en
a “number of incidences” in
the car park of people injuring
themselves which had gone
unreported.
“I’ve always though that it
has b en quite amazing that we
haven’t had any serious a cidents
or senior citizens perhaps
tri ping in those potholes and
doing themselves some damage.”
He is confiden the new
a proach wi l bring results.
“I think the WorkSafe
involvement may prove to be the
lever that we are l oking for.”
THE PAPANUI-Innes
Community Board has taken the
rare step of starting a petition
to figh the city council over
funding.
Signatures are being co lected
in a bid to get funding for a community
facility in Shirley.
It comes after the city council
removed funding for the centre
planned for Shirley Rd, near the
intersection with Hi ls Rd. This
was the site of the former community
centre, which was badly
damaged in the February 2,
20 1, earthquake.
The removal o funding
prompted community board
chairwoman Ali Jones to threaten
to stand down, citing it as her “die
in the ditch” project.
Ms Jones said the board’s role
is to represen the community,
and by gathering signatures from
residents, it was fulfi ling that
role.
“One of the roles of a community
board is to represent and act
as advocate for the interests of its
community and this is what we
are doing. The LTP and annual
plans are a l about lo bying the
Apartments’
sign-off
this week
• By Sarla Donovan
THE OWNERS of Sumner’s Cave
Rock Apartments are expecting the
Earthquake Commi sion to sign-off
on a se tlement agr emen this w ek.
Body corporate chairman Mike
White said the group had gone
into mediation with IAG and EQC
on February 20, and signed off
on a deal with IAG on February
2 – coincidenta ly seven years
to the day after the February 2,
20 1, earthquake. However, they
are waiting for EQC to sign the
agr ement.
“Given that EQC actua ly drafted
the agr ement, there’ l be no
problem with them doing that.”
The apartments suffered damage
in the February and June, 20 1,
earthquakes and were demolished in
late 2012. In 2016, IAG’s offer of the
difference betw en indemnity value,
$10 mi lion, and the sum insured,
$16 mi lion, was rejected by the body
corporate.
The mediation agr ement
prevented Mr White from disclosing
the se tlement amount, but he said it
involved the two parties paying “a bit
more money than they’d wanted to
earlier.”
A WOOLSTON butcher proved
to be a cut above the rest in an
international competition.
New World Fe ry Rd butcher
Jeremy Garth and his team, the
Pure South Sharp Blacks, recently
came second a the World
Butchers’ Cha lenge in Northern
Ireland.
It was the firs time Mr Garth
had competed in the cha lenge
and he was “rea ly proud” of
how the team performed.
“We produced some top quality
products and came away
with a g od result so we’re very
ha py,” he said.
The preparation for this year’s
World Butchers’ Cha lenge was
intense as the team members
met in Auckland every two
months for lengthy w ekend
practices.
Mr Garth, who has b en a
butcher for 14 years, said the
competition brought back his
pa sion for the job.
“Doing a l this stuff and
m eting new people, s eing new
ideas, it just brings that flair
back for you,” he said.
Mr Garth hopes to own a
butcher shop of his own someday
but says for now he wi l focus
on ge ting more experience
and on the 2020 cha lenge.
“In two years’ time, we’ l be
going back to try and win the
title,” he said.
However, the public has li tle
Only eight submi sions were
aimed at regulating commercial
activities in public places.
The district council wi l be
holding a hearing for the Public
Places Bylaw and Policy on Commercial
Activities and Events in
Public Places.
A hearing is scheduled to be
held on Thursday.
The bylaw comes as an increasing
number of mobile traders
are s eking to operate in Selwyn,
especia ly during the summer
months.
In the past year, the district
council has received five inquiries
about se ting up a mobile busine s
on private or public land.
A report said there are two
As a tribute to those who
served, members of the trust wi l
Mr A pleton said it was
But he said the presentation
AN UPPER Ri carton butcher
has proven himself to be a cut
above his Au sie rivals at an
international competition.
Elite Meats owner Corey
Winder was named in the a l
star team a the World Butchers’
Cha lenge in Northern Ireland.
Mr Winder and his team, the
Pure South Sharp Blacks, which
includes W olston butcher
Jeremy Garth, finished second
in the competition.
He said the cha lenge started
as a “transtasman test match”
seven years ago.
The preparation for this
year’s World Butchers’ Challenge
was intense as the team
members met in Auckland
every two months for lengthy
w ekend practices. Mr Winder
said coming second against 1
other countries was a “fantastic”
result.
“To get second behind Ireland
was a huge achievement and to
be ahead of Australia is an
even bi ger thing for us,” he
said.
But Mr Winder admires the
Australian team.
“Those guys over there
[Australia] are on top of their
game, they do a g od job,” he
said.
“And it just showcases that
New Zealand has got some
of the best butchers in the
world,” he said.
Board chairman Mike Mora
told Western News the submi sion
“You can just about guarant e
Mr Mora said he wasn’t sure if
the city council would endorse the
“I’d like to think so because the
city council has had their eyes
Mr Mora said the community
