Hempstead Plant Renovations
FDR Services is continuing into Phase III of our $10 million renovation project at our Hempstead, New York plant.
Phase III includes upgrades made to maintain our commitment to the safety and security of our employees. We have
installed a new employee entrance with a key card entry. Key card entries have been installed at each entrance to the
building, all time clocks and work stations. Each employee has been given an ID card which, in addition to granting
access to the building, is used to clock in and out.
Proper training to ensure the safety of our employees has always been at the forefront of our employee safety
program. Expansion on our current training program is taking place as part of our Phase III safety initiative. FDR is
working with a new payroll company, Paychex, which offers online employee training that is compliant with HLAC and
OSHA regulations. All new employees will be required to take online training programs before starting work and
current employees will be required to take follow up courses.
Using The Joint Commission Standards to Aid in Effectively Managing Linen
Obtaining Joint Commission accreditation is a lengthy and complex process for healthcare facilities. As a linen
company, FDR takes responsibility in knowing and understanding not only our products and services, but the latest
guidelines of the healthcare industry.
Knowing the facts...
A common misconception of a Joint Commission guideline is 96 hours worth of linen has to be kept on site at all times.
While The Joint Commission requires the hospital’s Emergency Operations Plan to identify their capabilities and
procedures to provide patient care for 96 hours, hospitals are not required to stockpile supplies (including linen) to
last for 96 hours of operation.
Knowing your products...
Facilities may feel that disposable cubical curtains are the more hygienic option because they can eliminate the chance
of cross contamination. While disposable curtains are hygienically safe if changed often, using reusable cubical
curtains helps to control costs while being hygienically safe as disposable curtains. As Linda Fairbanks, executive
director of ALM, stated, “I fail to see how this decision reduces the likelihood of cross contamination if the facility does
not increase the frequency of curtain changes.”
Knowing your facility’s rules...
Utilizing a scrub and lab coat rental program allows FDR to safely and hygienically launder your employees’ attire. The
Joint Commission standards are not being followed if your facility allows employees to home launder; the garments
can become contaminated by external sources, putting patient safety at risk. FDR barcodes all scrubs, lab coats and
uniforms and provides comprehensive tracking reports to help ensure your employees are sending in their garments
for washing and not home laundering.
We are here to help
Contact us to find out how FDR can help ensure all of your linen and uniform Joint Commission requirements can be
met and maintained through our innovative products and services. Our Certified Laundry and Linen Manager (CLLM)
staff members are available to do a cost-free assessment of your current program at any time!
Featured product: DermaCare Pads
DermaCare pads are 100% bonded which reduces the possibility of a pressure ulcer or bed sores while being twice as
absorbent as a standard underpad. Customers that have converted over to the DermaCare product have seen
anywhere between a 30-40% reduction in usage of reusable pads, due to the size
and absorbency of the product. DermaCare pads can also eliminate in the need for
draw sheets, since DermaCare pads are used for both their intended purpose and
patient positioning. This product is not only improving the patient experience, but it
is also showing a cost saving for the facility.
