This is approximately the same number of overdose deaths seen in 2017. Opiate-related deaths accounted for almost 92 percent of overdose deaths for 2018. Fueling this was fentanyl which accounted for 79 percent of all overdose deaths. In the same period for 2017, opiates accounted for 87.8 percent and fentanyl accounted for 61 percent of overdose deaths. Carfentanil-related overdose deaths decreased in 2018 to 1.1 percent, whereas, in the same period for 2017 they accounted for 18.5 percent. Heroin-related deaths also decreased to 12.2 percent from 15.9 percent in 2017. Cocaine, methamphetamine and benzodiazepine-related overdose deaths increased in 2018 compared to 2017 with cocaine: going to 39.4 percent from 35 percent; methamphetamines to 10.3 percent from 4.9 percent; and benzodiazepines to 6.7 percent from 4 percent. Looking at race and ethnicity, 22 percent of those who died of overdose deaths were African American, an increase of 2 percent from 2017. Hispanics also saw an increase in overdose deaths from 1 percent in 2017 to 3 percent in 2018. The Caucasian population saw a decrease in overdose deaths from 78 percent in 2017 to 74 percent in 2018. The number of males dying of overdoses continues to be higher than that of females with numbers unchanged from 2017, males 69 percent and females 31 percent. The top five zip codes with the highest number of overdose deaths for 2018 were 43207, 43204, 43223, 43206, and 43228. Drug Drop Box The Madison Township Police Department provides an opiate prescription “Drug Drop Box” for the community. This drop box is located in the lobby of the Madison Township Police Department, 4567 Madison Lane, and is accessible to the public during normal office hours Monday through Friday 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Any person can walk-in and dispose of new or old pills, including prescription medications, or any other illegal substances and place them into this box with no questions asked. www.columbusmessenger.com Golden Cruiser Club Groveport Madison Schools invites senior residents of the district to attend athletic and performing arts programs showcasing the talents of its students.
