Westside residents and friends from the surrounding communities
came out to beautify the area during the 22nd annual
South Central Hilltop Cleanup held on May 4. For close to two
hours, volunteers dodged recurring rain showers as they traveled
up and down Sullivant Avenue and its connector streets
and alleyways clearing hundreds of pounds of litter and debris
found along the way. Organizer and founder Lisa Boggs said
she was thankful for the continued support for the event as she
hopes there will still be a passion to clean up this community
even as she steps away from coordinator duties next year. “It is
time to pass this event off to our younger generation,” she said.
“We need them to speak up, to stand up, and continue to work
to make this community a better and healthier place to live.”
When the Columbus City Council
begins to prepare the annual capital
improvements budget and the capital
improvements plan, they often seek the
advice of the local area commissioners to
provide insight on which investments residents
may want to see in their communities.
In order to facilitate the request by city
officials, the Greater Hilltop Area
Commission launched a community survey
on its website and social media pages earlier
this year. The nine question community
survey asked residents which infrastructure
projects should be prioritized in
regard to amenities at local parks and
recreation centers, public service, and public
utilities.
The responses collected from the 66 residents
who participated in the survey were
presented at the full commission meeting
on May 7.
According to Dean Smith, commissioner
and co-chair of the planning and economic
According to the Mid-Ohio Regional Planning
Commission (MORPC), one million new residents are
expected to call central Ohio home by the year 2050.
More residents will mean a greater need for public
transportation.
“We are expecting growth but not expecting much more
roadway,” said Kelsey Ellingsen, the local government
affairs director with COTA, at a recent Grove City Council
meeting.
Ellingsen and Elliott Lewis, with MORPC, attended the
council meeting to engage community stakeholders about
the funding needed for future growth.
“Affordability of living in central Ohio is changing,” said
Ellingsen. “We have seen a 45 percent increase in the cost
of housing alone since 2020. If we want our neighbors to
stay our neighbors, we have to think about how we arrest
the growth and those costs.”
Ellingsen spoke about LinkUs, central Ohio’s comprehensive
transportation initiative to help address growth,
affordability, and opportunity gaps in the community. This
program will create faster, more reliable public transportation
through Bus Rapid Transit corridors, as well as safer
and expanded bicycle and pedestrian paths.
“If we are going to implement LinkUs, we are going to
make historic infrastructure investments,” said Ellingsen.
COTA has already planned to move forward with three
corridors for the Bus Rapid Transit plan. One will run
along West Broad Street from the downtown area, through
the Hilltop, all the way to Prairie Township. The other two
that have already been determined are East Main Street
and a northwest corridor. COTA plans to choose two more
corridors this summer.
According to COTA, with a Bus Rapid Transit system,
customers would pay fares before getting on the vehicle
and will no longer have to step up into the vehicle. The
boarding platform will be level with the floor of the vehicle.
This level boarding also allows riders to roll a bike right
into the vehicle and stow it in an on-board bike rack. Once
customers are safely inside, the doors close. Unlike noise
pollution created by most vehicles, the buses will be electric
and easy on the ears. Rapid transit vehicles will zip
through the region in dedicated lanes with traffic signal
priority, meaning public transit will have priority at intersections.
Ellingsen said this is part of an overall $8 billion
revenue plan by 2050.
“That’s very significant,” she said.
COTA is currently funded by a 0.5 percent sales
tax. The organization will be looking for federal
grants as well as considering the placement of a
levy on the ballot in November. Ellingsen said both
Cleveland and Cincinnati have a sales tax of 1 percent
for its public transportation system. Columbus
would like to follow suit.
There are also plans to expand the COTA Plus
service, with up to 16 new zones by 2050.
COTA Plus was launched as a pilot program in
Grove City in July 2019. The shuttle service provides
customers on-demand rides via a mobile app.
Like other rideshare services, COTA Plus transports
customers from point A to point B. The service
is delivered by COTA operators using a fleet of
branded, ADA-accessible vehicles. This provides
customers with access to jobs, healthcare and more.
In addition to the transportation aspect of the
May 19, 2024 - WESTSIDE MESSENGER - PAGE 3
Regional transportation plan presented by COTA and MORPC
initiative, Lewis said MORPC is looking at a mobility initiative.
He said most people cannot walk out their front
door to a bus stop. They use sidewalks to get to that stop.
“If there is no sidewalk or it is crumbled, that makes it
more difficult for people to access public transportation,”
said Lewis.
According to Lewis, MORPC will be looking at 500 plus
miles of safer and expanded bike and pedestrian paths
throughout its coverage area. The organization is working
with municipalities to identify local areas of concern.
Highlighting the neighborhood with Home and Garden Tour
By Christine Bryant
Staff Writer
Although Emilee Johnson and her family
have lived in the Westgate neighborhood
for only three years, they’ve made countless
memories in their 1920s cottage-style
Tudor home.
Now she’s welcoming the community to
her home to share in the warmth of those
memories, preserved alongside many of the
home’s original features.
Johnson’s home is one of eight stops on
this year’s Westgate Home and Garden
Tour. The annual event will take place
from 2 to 6 p.m. June 8 and will include the
Third Way Coffee House, 3059 W. Broad
St., one home on South Brinker Avenue,
two homes on South Southampton Avenue,
three homes on South Roys Avenue and
one home on South Algonquin Avenue.
“This year we are celebrating the centennial
of the Westgate neighborhood,”
said Kate Futty, who is a Westgate
Neighbors Association (WNA) board member
and a member of the Home and Garden
Tour committee. “The first homes were
built in the neighborhood in 1923, but it
was not given the name ‘Westgate’ until
1924.”
The three homes on South Roys Avenue
are the oldest structures on this year’s
tour, all built in the 1920s.
“About half of the homeowners on this
year’s tour also have children, so I think
this year is especially unique as tour-goers
will get an idea of how these families make
it work in homes that are smaller and have
far fewer bedrooms and bathrooms than
what you typically see on HGTV. We are
thrilled that in the year of Westgate’s
Centennial celebration, we can highlight
the neighborhood’s next generation.”
When Johnson first saw her South Roys
Avenue home, she says she fell in love with
the front door. Once she opened it, Johnson
discovered there was so much more to love.
“I love the brick patio in our backyard, I
love all of the built-in cabinetry that we
have in the bedrooms upstairs, and we
have a wonderful cedar closet in our children’s
bedroom that when I first saw it, I
envisioned they could make into their little
fort as they get older,” she said. “I love the
open space in our living and dining areas,
and just the overall design of the home that
allows me and my husband to collaborate
our styles with the home instead of having
the desire to change it.”
Johnson’s outdoor garden is among one
of her favorite spaces in the home since it
allows her to connect with nature while
sharing its bounty with the community.
“We’ve been adding more to it with each
season that comes, and it makes me excited
to have a surplus of homegrown food that I
can give to neighbors and friends,” she
said.
A few blocks away is another stop on the
tour at Third Way Coffee House, which
recently called the Westgate neighborhood
home.
“Third Way was previously located on
the north side of West Broad Street, but
moved across the street to the south side of
West Broad last year, which now officially
puts them in the Westgate neighborhood,”
Futty said.
Third Way will provide its full-service
coffee bar for the duration of the tour, and
AJ’s Tacos food truck will be on site as well,
she said.
“There is also one stop on this year’s
tour that is garden-only and excludes the
interior of the home, but the garden at this
stop is incredibly impressive and spans
both the front, side and back of the property,”
Futty said.
Other highlights of the tour include A
Cape Cod-style home built in 1941 that is
full of mid-century modern charm and
boasts many characteristic quirks of the
neighborhood, a mid-century modern ranch
built in 1953 that features solar panels and
a garden that grows peppers for homemade
hot sauces, and a Craftsman built in 1923
that experienced a fire early last year.
“Since then, it has been fully renovated
to not only update the electric, HVAC,
plumbing and venting, but the homeowners
have meticulously rebuilt as many of
the original features of the home as they
could to maintain its craftsman essence
and charm,” Futty said.
Each home on the tour is assigned one
lead volunteer, in addition to other volunteers
who help guide visitors through the
homes and gardens, she said.
“At least one homeowner is also present
on tour day to help answer questions about
their property that the volunteers may not
be able to answer,” Futty said.
Proceeds from the tour help fund the
Westgate Neighbors Association scholarship
program, which is awarded to one student
every year who is pursuing continued
education either through a certificate or
degree program. The scholarship is open to
students living in the Westgate neighborhood,
as well as any West High School students
or alumni.
Proceeds from the event also go toward
the continued preservation, improvement
and enhancement of the neighborhood, as
well as the Westside community as a
whole, Futty said.
Pre-sale tickets are $15 for WNA members
and $17 for the general public. The
event will be held rain or shine. Tickets are
available online through June 7 at westgateneighbors.org.
On the day of the tour, tickets are $20
and available at the registration tent at
West Gate Lodge, 2925 W. Broad St. Cash,
check or credit card are accepted only at
the registration tent, which opens at 1:30
p.m. Parking for registration is available
behind the lodge.
HILLTOP
Continued from page 1
development committee, these are the five
priority requests that residents want the
city to fund in the near future.
•The installation of sidewalks and traffic
calming devices on Steele Avenue
•The installation of traffic calming
devices around Hauntz Park
•The addition of sidewalks on N.
Westgate, N. Westmoor, N. Huron, and
Haldy Avenues
•Improvements to Holton Community
Center
•Decorative street lighting on Union
Avenue
The installation of sidewalks and/or
traffic calming devices on Steele Avenue
was ranked as the first priority by residents,
said Smith, because reckless drivers
are putting pedestrians at risk.
“There are a lot of issues with traffic and
speeders,” he said, “and there are opportunities
to make it a more walkable space.”
The request to place traffic calming
devices around Hauntz Park and add sidewalks
to N. Westgate, N. Westmoor, N.
Huron, and Haldy Avenues ranked as priority
two and three, respectively, for much
of the same reason as the first priority
request.
Smith said he and fellow commissioner
James White recently met with the newly
formed Friends of Hauntz Park. During the
meeting, the Friends of Hauntz Park members
told the commissioners protective barriers
are needed around the park on
Columbian Avenue because motorists are
constantly speeding and endangering the
lives of pedestrians and park visitors.
Improvements to Holton Community
Center came in at number four on the priority
list. Residents said they would like to
see exterior and interior improvements at
the center and around the property. They
also said they want the city’s recreation
and parks department to add beautification
elements and safety features.
Rounding out the priority list at five was
decorating street lighting on Union
Avenue. Survey participants said the portion
of Union Avenue from Ryan Avenue
and Central Avenue needs aesthetic
upgrades and safety upgrades as the area
is utilized by numerous motorists and
pedestrians.
The commissioners did not have any
objections to this list, though commissioners
Adhanet Kifle and Malik Moore asked
why there were not more requests for
adding sidewalks to areas around
Westgate Park or the resurfacing of alleys
and streets.
Commissioner Ashley Montana, who is
also a member of the planning and economic
development committee, said they
removed requests for improvement projects
that have already been earmarked by the
city.
The commission approved the capital
improvements requests at the meeting. It
will be sent to the city council for funding
considerations on future infrastructure
projects.
In other news, Olabisi Eddy, the westside
neighborhood liaison with the city’s
department of neighborhoods, said the
resurfacing of Mound Street (between S.
Wayne and Central Avenue) will begin in
July. From July 4—12, the city will begin to
replace curbs and add ramps that comply
with the Americans with Disabilities Act;
from July 15 through Aug. 3, the city will
begin to resurface the road. The city is also
planning to add a pedestrian beacon at
Mound and Wheatland.

Pre-planning your final wishes: A healing gift to your family
Losing a loved one is a crushing experience. It knocks the
wind out of you so much it’s hard to think. It’s ironic that when
we are grief stricken and overwhelmed, we must make some of
the most difficult decisions like how to honor our loved one,
one final time.
Writing an obituary, planning a service, and choosing a
monument can seem unwieldy in those moments. What if you
never discussed those things? What if you are not sure what
they’d like, or your family members disagree? What if the costs
are not within your budget? These challenges could be eliminated
by preplanning.
According to the National Funeral Directors Association,
the median cost of a traditional funeral today is $7,640, before
cemetery and headstone costs. Inclusive of them, it can be a
$10,000 investment or more.
Making final plans is a wonderful gift to a family. It not
only protects loved ones from unplanned expenses, it takes the
guesswork and stress out of making important decisions during
an emotional time. Today, it is possible to plan, design, and pay
for everything up front from the service, burial, and headstone.
In fact, companies like Modlich Monument Company can produce
a headstone in advance, adding final touches at the passing
of a loved one.
Pre-planning gives the family time to research options, talk
and include personal details that ads a special touch. Pre-planning
also locks in the cost and removes the financial burden
from survivors, a gift they will truly appreciate.
Arthritis and exercise
Exercise can be beneficial in the treatment
of arthritis, say many doctors.
Physical activity can reduce stiffness and
increase muscle strength and flexibility. It also
has overall health benefits, such as improving
cardiac fitness and physical endurance. Three
types of exercise are most appropriate for
those who have arthritis:
•Strength training: Strong muscles help
support and protect joints affected by arthritis.
Lifting weights can provide this.
•Range of motion exercises: Dancing,
tai chi, Pilates, swimming, and other activities
that push the body to stretch and move help
maintain normal joint motion and relieve stiffness.
•Aerobic activities: Activities such as
brisk walking, bicycle riding, skating and more
are good for the heart. They also moderate
weight, which in turn puts less strain on joints,
particularly the knees. Some studies show
that aerobic exercise can reduce inflammation
in some joints.
Before beginning an exercise program,
discuss with your doctor what activities might
be right for you.
The Leadership
of the Ohio
House of
Representatives
Managing the legislative work that gets completed
by the Ohio House of Representatives takes a hierarchy
of leadership. In a previous column, I described
the responsibilities of our House Speaker,
Jason Stephens of Lawrence County. He presides
over the legislature during our meetings, directs
legislative procedures, and appoints committee
chairs and members. Today I will describe the
remaining House officers and summarize their
responsibilities.
The Speaker Pro Tempore becomes the temporary
Speaker in the absence of the Speaker. The position
for this General Assembly is held by Scott Oelslager
of Canton, a 34-year veteran of the legislature.
The Majority Floor Leader (or, simply, Majority
Leader) develops and implements the legislative
agenda of the majority (Republican) caucus. Bill
Seitz of Cincinnati, a 20-plus year legislator, currently
holds that position. The Assistant Majority
Leader assists the Majority Leader in these endeavors.
Jon Cross of Findlay fills this position.
The Majority Whip is Jim Hoops, a third-term legislator
from the northwest corner of Ohio. He is responsible
for monitoring legislation and securing
votes for a given bill’s passage. It’s been my experience
thus far that he keeps a pulse of each representative’s
support (or lack thereof) of a measure,
rather than tries to persuade support. I never have
been instructed to do anything but vote my conscience
on any bill; the Whip simply keeps track of
intended votes. The Assistant Majority Whip is
Sharon Ray of Medina. The term Whip originated in
the Parliament of Great Britain and derives from the
”whipper-in” at a fox hunt.
The leadership of the minority party (Democratic)
caucus consists of the Minority and Assistant Minority
Floor Leader and the Minority and Assistant Minority
Whip. Their roles are similar to those of their
majority counterparts. The current Minority Leader
is Allison Russo of Upper Arlington, and the Assistant
Minority Leader is Dontavius Jarrells of Columbus,
whose district abuts ours on the north and east.
The Minority Whip is Dani Isaacsohn of Cincinnati
(the only freshman legislator in leadership) and the
Assistant Minority Whip is Michele Grim of Toledo.
Although the entire House votes on all the leadership
positions, legislators typically (but not always)
defer to their respective party selections, especially
for the Leader and Whip positions. The current
make-up of the House is 67 Republicans and 32
Democrats. The Senate manages itself similarly.
There are 26 Republican and 7 Democratic Senators
in the 135th General Assembly.
(Dave Dobos represents the 10th District in the Ohio
House of Representatives, which consists of parts of
West, Southwest, and South Columbus, Grove City,
Urbancrest, and portions of Franklin and Jackson
Townships. He reports regularly on his activities in this
position and his campaign has paid for this communication
with you.)
Beyond having the distinction as being one of the only sugarfilled
foods that did not make my adolescent skin erupt like a volcano,
I cannot say that the once frequent consumption of the Pop-
Tarts breakfast pastry added any real value to my life when I was
younger, particularly in regard to actual nutritional needs. As an
adult — questionably — I cannot say the same when it comes to the
recent consumption of Pop-Tarts related media because it is now
two-for-two in providing a real sense of happiness to my old and
weary soul.
The first instance of this long forgotten breakfast staple becoming
a beacon of joy in my life took place at a collegiate football
game, of all things. It was at the conclusion of an otherwise
uneventful bowl game between Kansas State and North Carolina
State and the sponsors had just rolled out the float for the trophy
presentation ceremony. Standing atop of the festively adorned
structure was a gigantic and sweet faced pastry named
Strawberry. As the official mascot of the inaugural Pop-Tarts
Bowl, the smiling Strawberry whipped out a sign declaring
“Dreams Really Do Come True” and waved manically as it was
slowly lowered into an industrial sized toaster.
Although Donna Summer’s hit 1979 song “Hot Stuff” was blaring
throughout the Camping World Stadium, gasps could be heard
in the crowd. Before the guests could get too whipped up from having
seen a high fructose massacre, a secret compartment on the
float opened to reveal an oversized Pop-Tart on the slab, frosted
and toasted and ready to be consumed by the victorious — and
apparently ravenous — Kansas State players.
The sacrificial breakfast pastry moment immediately went
viral on the internet, deservedly so. It was one of the funniest and
most bizarre scenes ever broadcast on television and it brought so
much happiness because of the fact. Nearly six months have gone
by since that event and I still go back and watch the clip whenever
I need a good laugh.
The second instance in which the breakfast pastry brought a
sense of joy to my life was during a recent viewing of “Unfrosted,”
a new movie on Netflix which is extremely loosely based on the
race to create a shelf-stable breakfast option. Unsurprisingly, it is
as absurd as it sounds but unfortunately it never comes as close to
the level of greatness of Strawberry cheerfully sailing into the big
toaster in the sky.
SPECIAL OFFER
The Reel Deal
In this completely
silly and mostly
faux tale of the creation
of the Pop- Dedra Cordle
Tart, noted cereal
enthusiast Jerry Seinfeld plays Bob
Cabana, an executive at Kellogg’s who has
three main concerns in life: paying the
annual tuition of $200 for his children to
attend college; saving enough money to
replace his yard grass with sod; and finding
a way to beat cereal rival Post to the creation
of a shelf-stable breakfast pastry that
could replace cereal as the top breakfast choice for kids across the
country.
Although Kellogg’s has been the reigning champs of the cereal
industry for decades now — they constantly sweep the annual
breakfast award — CEO Edsel Kellogg III (Jim Gaffigan) has
become somewhat paranoid over what Post CEO Marjorie Post
(Amy Shumer) could have baking in the lab. In order to quell his
concerns that they could be usurped in the hearts of sugar-loving
children around the globe, he orders Bob to assemble a team of
shrewd individuals to design and build this elusive breakfast
beast.
The first person he turns to is former colleague Donna “Stan”
Stankowski (Melissa McCarthy), who left the company to join
NASA to work on the moon race. To get her to come back, Bob ruefully
asks whether she believes they will really go to the moon.
When she expressed her belief that they would not, she is back on
board, simple as that.
With the dynamic duo back together — they were responsible for
the creation of many cereal flavors and the corresponding mascots
— they recruit a powerful breakfast commission that includes bicycle
king Steve Schwinn (Jack McBrayer), fitness guru Jack
LaLanne (James Marsden), ice cream connoisseur Tom Carrel
(Adrian Martinez), pasta pro Chef Boy Ardee (Bobby Moynihan)
and possible former war criminal Harold Von Braunhut (Thomas
Lennon). Since none of these people on the breakfast commission
actually know anything about the creation of breakfast meals,
chaos quickly ensues. Over the course of several weeks in the
Kellogg’s lab, a sentient sea monkey gets baked into ravioli, one of
the commissioners loses his life in a freak taste testing accident,
and they have to grapple with an underground movement led by
Frosted Flakes mascot Tony the Tiger (a grrreat Hugh Grant) to
sabotage the breakfast pastry movement.
Based on what I have just written about some of the key plot
points in this movie, I cannot in good faith say that “Unfrosted” is
a “good” film. By most standards, it is not. Seinfeld, making his
directorial debut, is limited in his vision (it essentially amounts to
a point and shoot direction) and the screenplay he co-wrote with
“Bee Movie” scribes Spike Feresten, Barry Marder, and Andy
Robin does not even attempt to tell a complete narrative — the
third act crumbles like a pastry, as if everyone ran out of ideas and
just decided to throw absurdities at the wall. None of these things
are promising in a movie. And yet…I laughed. A lot. I laughed
because this movie about the invention of the Pop-Tart and its
rival, the Post Country Squares, is very, very, silly and sometimes
you just need something very, very silly in your life.
Much like the actual breakfast pastry — or any other food
stuffed with sugar — I urge caution if you want to consume
“Unfrosted” because I know its humor will not be for everyone. It’s
completely absurd, it completely embraces that absurdity, and it
completely expects the viewer to do so as well. Not everyone can,
of course, but the viewing experience will be so much better if you
put seriousness aside. Grade: B
The Columbus Arts Festival, produced
by the Greater Columbus Arts Council
(GCAC) and presented by the American
Electric Power Foundation, is looking for
energetic, fun-loving individuals to join
their corps of volunteers for the festival,
held June 7-9 on the downtown riverfront.
The Columbus Arts Festival kicks off
summer with a weekend event including
more than 250 artists selling work; multiple
stages featuring performances in
music, theater, dance and spoken word;
more than 40 food and drink vendors; and
hands-on art activities and demonstrations.
In order to create this event for more
than 500,000 people, GCAC recruits hundreds
of volunteers to join their team over
Pet Corner
the festival weekend.
“The Columbus Arts Festival couldn’t
happen without our dedicated volunteers,”
said Festival Director Alexis Perrone.
“We’re grateful to our long-time volunteers
and we’re always ready to welcome more
into the fold. The commitment is easy, and
it’s a fun way to experience the festival
from the inside while contributing to such a
valuable community event.”
Volunteers do everything from help with
the kid’s hands-on art activities, to staffing
artists’ booths while they take a short
break, to being a stagehand. With a commitment
of just a few hours, volunteers can
be part of the annual event, and will
receive a T-shirt, snacks and bottled water.
Volunteers must be 12 years of age or
older, and those ages 12-16 must participate
with an adult during their shift.
Volunteers who monitor artist booths must
be 16 or older. Volunteers for beverage
booths must be 21 or older.
Scouts help to build a brighter community
Residents living at National Church
Residences Lincoln Village on the westside
of Columbus recently received a special gift
from eight local Scouts. The Scouts
planned and built two raised garden beds
to enhance the recently donated and
installed paver patio outside the assisted
living community.
“This is an amazing project,” said
Executive Director Kyle Schmidlapp of
Lincoln Village. “These new flower beds
add aesthetic appeal to the patio and
should help foster a sense of connection
and engagement among our residents as
they become involved in gardening.”
Adam Harrington, age 17, led the team
of Scouts and adult volunteers. He is working
toward earning his Eagle Scout badge,
which is the highest designation in Boy
Scouts of America. In order to achieve the
Eagle Scout rank, Harrington must complete
a series of requirements over several
years, including a community project.
Harrington developed the project, made
a step-by-step plan, raised the funds to pay
for it, provided directions to the Scouts
before construction began and then guided
them through building the raised garden
beds.
While developing ideas for his Eagle
Scout project, Harrington visited Lincoln
Village on the advice of his father, who has
served as the consulting pharmacist for
this community for several years.
“When I got here and saw this patio,
there was just benches. I thought that we
could add something here for the seniors to
do,” said Harrington, a member of the
National Honor Society and a junior at
Dublin Scioto High School.
During the six-hour project, the event
became an intergenerational meeting with
many residents visiting with the young volunteers
and watching as they built the
raised garden boxes and then anchored
them in the ground.
“Many residents came out and talked to
the kids and thanked them, which really
The volunteers from Boy Scout Troop 185 and its sister Troop 581 spent time building
garden beds at a senior living community in the Lincoln Village are on the westside.
In 2008, the Pittsburgh Steelers’ defensive
unit was a dominant force in the
National Football League, leading all other
teams in nearly every major statistical category
and playing an integral role in the
team’s AFC Championship and Super
Bowl XLIII victories.
It is that season that London native and
Pro Football Hall of Famer Dick LeBeau
chose as the focus of his forthcoming book,
“Legendary: The 2008 Pittsburgh Steelers
Defense, the Zone Blitz, and My Six
Decades in the NFL.” Published by
Triumph Publishing, the book is slated for
release on July 9.
A football lifer, LeBeau was a member
of Ohio State University’s 1957 national
championship team. He went on to play for
the Detroit Lions for 14 years, then
embarked on a 45-year NFL coaching
career, spending 16 of those seasons guiding
the Steelers’ defense. He retired from
the NFL in 2017 and decided a few years
ago to look into writing a book about the
2008 season.
“I thought it would be good if there was
something down in writing to commemorate
what these guys did in that year,” he
said.
“Legendary” marks LeBeau’s first journey
into authorship.
“They say everybody’s got one good book
in them. It was kind of fun to jump in the
water and see what the temperature was. I
enjoyed it,” LeBeau said of the writing
process.
That process spanned two-and-a-half
years and involved meticulous research.
“We had to substantiate a lot of stuff
and research the numbers,” LeBeau said,
referring to the statistics that set the team
apart. “I went back and looked at every
game from that season and contacted a lot
of the players and did a lot of interviewing.
“I had a good memory of the general
things that happened, but I wanted to be
pretty exact in what I was writing about.”
LeBeau praised his co-authors, sportswriters
Scott Brown and George Von
Benko, for their work on the book.
news and notes
In his forthcoming book, London native
Dick LeBeau delves into the details that
made 2008 a standout season for the
Pittsburgh Steelers’ defense. He also
includes anecdotes from his nearly 60
years as an NFL player and coach.
“The way we pieced it together, it makes
for interesting and light reading,” LeBeau
said. “Readers can jump around if they
want. Each chapter covers a couple of different
areas.”
In addition to detailing the 2008 season,
the book includes anecdotes from LeBeau’s
nearly 60 years in the league, as well as
recollections from players who helped to
bring LeBeau’s groundbreaking defensive
strategy to life. Those players include Hall
of Fame Safety Troy Polamalu, 2008 NFL
Defensive Player of the Year James
Harrison, and essential linebacker James
Farrior, to name a few.
Born in 1937, LeBeau graduated from
London High School in 1955. He currently
lives in Cincinnati with his wife, Nancy.
About his hometown, LeBeau said, “I
couldn’t have had a better place to grow up,
better people to grow up with, or a better
environment to prepare myself to have a
very happy life.”
Six Decades in the NFL” can be preordered
