Young leader off to China
AVONSIDE GIRLS’ High School
student Kathrine Wiki Arapeta
will play a key part in the New
Zealand China Youth Leadership
Summit.
It will be the year 13 student’s
second summit after she travelled
to China for the event last year.
St Andrew’s College will host
the summit, which is set to run
from July 13-23.
Kathrine will attend this
year’s event as a youth leader.
She said the best part about the
previous summit was discovering
and sharing in a new culture.
“I personally, got a whole
new outlook on the world, how
every country fits together, and a
vision for the future of bringing
countries closer together. It
definitely helped to prepare us for
our own future, how we could be
leaders of our own country, and
how we could work together with
people from other countries.”
The event will celebrate the
close relationship between sister
cities in New Zealand and China
by bringing together about 100
student leaders from the two
nations.
Senior high school student
leaders, along with first-year
tertiary students, are invited to
apply to take part.
This summit aims to empower
students to be effective, culturally
aware, socially responsible
YOUNG LEADER: Avonside Girls’ High School student Kathrine
Wiki Arapeta will take part in her second New Zealand China
Youth Leadership Summit next month.
global citizens. Founder Jan Fitz-
Gerald said delegates will learn
about the importance of China
and New Zealand’s long-term
relations, make new friends and
gain a deeper understanding of
each other’s culture and customs.
“We will provide opportunities
for all students to develop skills,
knowledge and capabilities to
be global citizens and effective
future leaders in a challenging
world,” she said.
Keynote speaker Stephen
Jacobi, of the New Zealand
China Council, will be joined
by a host of other speakers and
presenters.
Students will learn about
leadership in a cross-cultural
environment. Workshops,
lectures and forums will cover
topics on being prepared
and working together, global
relations, cultural intelligence,
social responsibility and
resilience.
Students will also produce and
present a group project.
St Andrew’s College rector
Christine Leighton was delighted
to be hosting the event.
“This is a fabulous opportunity
for young New Zealanders to
learn and grow as global citizens
and future leaders.”
