Transcorp Hilton takes youth on
career development
BY VICTORIA OJEME
RECENTLY, some young and
creative Nigerian female
make-up artists were put to test in
Lagos in a dual purpose manner;
to bring out the best, inspire,
empower and instill independence
and confidence in them. This was
made possible when some makeup
artists in the country who may
not have been given that much
chance to excel in the beauty
industry, found time in the midst
of a competitive environment to
make an impact.
In a series titled: The Making of
Entrepreneurs: Lagos Chapter
Make-up Series, held in Lagos, the
founder, Women’s World Show,
WWS, Clara Chizoba Kronborg in
collaboration with Dabota Lawson
of Dabota Cosmetics, engaged
some young Nigerian beauticians
in a make-up training exercise.
Mrs. Clara Kronborg, Europebased
Nigerian entrepreneur and
global talk show personality, had
series of projects aimed at giving
back to society just to change the
narrative of a typical African
woman. To her, this is one way of
giving voice to women in Africa.
“This is the making of an
entrepreneur, a segment in the
Women World Show. We are
engaging the beauty entrepreneurs
to showcase their talents. They are
not really professionals but they are
good artists and need support to
grow,” says Clara.
She further disclosed: “This is
what we are doing to establish
them. It is all about reaching to
women, talking to them, using our
success stories to inspire them but
at the end of the day, we want to
reach out to those that do not have
the avenue to have to be where they
week hospitality internship
program in the hotel,” Adeyemo
informed.
Participants were taken in a guided
tour of the building as well as various
departments where they met with
professionals from all areas of
activity at the hotel.
“Through career speed
networking, team members shared
advice on the skills and attributes
participants need as they embark on
their chosen careers.
“Careers@Hilton Live events
want to be. Using myself as a case
study, I want them to be confident
and independent. I do not want
them to go through what I went
through. I want to be able to see a
woman’s life transform.
“We have done fashion series in
Abuja, right now, we are doing
makeup series in Lagos and there’s
a lot of it coming up in Rwanda,
Kenya and other African
countries. In each of these shows,
I collaborate with people who are
experts in their profession to make
it a reality,” Clara added.
The exercise had about five
female contestants showcasing
various creative makeup styles in
regulated timing, each working on
a model in an intense and
compelling condition. At the end
of the show, a winner who
surpassed expectations was chosen
provide unique opportunity for
Hilton team members to inspire and
encourage those interested in the
hospitality industry.”
Earlier in his remarks, the General
Manager, Transcorp Hilton, Abuja,
Kevin Brett, noted that since young
people have continued to face
challenging employment prospects,
it was pertinent to ensure they receive
information and advice about
available options, skills and
attributes required as they embark
on their chosen careers.
“We are passionate about raising
awareness of the opportunities the
THE Transcorp Hilton Hotel,
capacity-building programme
towards educating young people
about existing opportunities in the
hospitality industry.
Youth in Hospitality Month, the
series of programmes which are
expected to last till the end of the
month, has been described as the
largest global career events
organised by the hotel.
According to the Public
Relations Manager, Mr. Shola
Adeyemo, the initiative is part of
Bright Blue Futures - a global
program that encourages Hilton
team members to devote their time
and expertise in helping young
people pursue professional
development.
The hotel had recently hosted a
Career Fair for the youth. The
programme provided platform for
interaction between participants
and Hilton team members.
“The Career Fair familiarised
them with Hilton’s organisational
culture. Over 300 students drawn
from 15 secondary schools in Abuja
participated at the Fair.
“Also in attendance at the Fair
were 45 young men and women,
who will be taking part in a fourand
rewarded with a make-up
pack, courtesy of Dabota
Cosmetics and a cash prize of
N100, 000 with other incentives.
All other contestants were equally
rewarded.
Speaking after the show, Dabota
Lawson, founder, Dabota
Cosmetics said: “Honestly I think
it is a very good platform for
women. I did not know what to
expect when Clara approached me,
but today, I must say I am really
impressed. I look forward to
collaborating with her on more
events that hinge on empowering
women even if it has nothing to do
with beauty. I like what she is doing
– ‘women supporting women’. To
me, this is really great and the
women have really put in their best.
We saw a winner, someone who has
really put in her best to take the
knowledge given to her to the next
hospitality industry offers and we
are delighted to be doing this
during the month of May when we
are celebrating 100 Years of
Hilton,” Brett stated.
For the Director, Human
Resources, Omorinsola Sofola,
“activities we have put in place for
this year’s Careers@Hilton are a
great way of engaging and
inspiring the youth, and we are
delighted to be part of such a
fantastic initiative.”
Careers@Hilton Live: Youth in
Hospitality Month is part of Hilton
Worldwide’s Open Doors
commitment aimed at positively
impacting not less than one
million young people by the end of
2019 by preparing them to reach
their full potentials.
Linda Nwankwo, Women World
Show Nigerian coordinator, also
said: “This is generally about
empowering women using a
successful woman on that same
field as an inspiration to empower
others. We are going to make more
series of making an entrepreneur
in women workshop. For now, it is
a segment in the Women World
Show. We are going to cities and
other African countries. One thing
we are doing differently is that we
don’t just give people money on the
street, but we discover you on the
street and begin to build your life,
career, promote you on our
platform, use our own connections
to give you businesses. Women
World Show is not an ordinary show
but a way of reaching out to
younger ones and empowering
them,” concludes Linda.
•Omolara Adagunodo
Firm urges
Sanwo-Olu to
set agenda on
tourism
BY EBUNOLUWA SESSOU
LAGOS State Governor, Mr.
Babajide Sanwo-Olu has
been urged to focus on sustainable
tourism to further boost the
chances of Lagos becoming a 21st-
Century economy to take the
Nigerian tourism industry to the
next level and ensure that the sector
contributes more to the state’s
Gross Domestic Product, GDP.
Managing Director of Jumia’s
hotel and flight marketplace,
Omolara Adagunodo, disclosed
this in a statement while setting out
a tourism agenda for the new
governor.
Adagunodo who noted that the
past administration led by Mr.
Akinwunmi Ambode featured
tourism as one of its developmental
agenda, called on Sanwo-Olu to
follow suit.
“As the government is settling
down to work, I encourage the
administration to concentrate on
Sustainable Tourism.
“This is because the next phase
of tourism is for it to become
sustainable, and for Lagos to
establish a robust tourism
industry, it requires a roadmap
that takes full account of tourism’s
current and future economic,
social and environmental impacts,
addressing the needs of visitors, the
industry, the environment and host
communities.
“In fact, a combined report by
the United Nations World Tourism
Organisation, International Trade
Centre and Enhanced Integrated
Framework, EIF reveals that
tourism is sustainable and it is
widely recognised as a key sector
for achieving the United Nations
Sustainable Development Goals,
SDGs, given its major potential to
contribute to jobs and wealth
creation in the developing world.
Tourism is estimated to represent
10% of global GDP and generates
directly or indirectly one in ten jobs
globally.
“Interestingly, the development
agenda of the Governor is geared
towards achieving sustainable
tourism. Tagged: Project THEME, the
administration’s pillars of
development will focus on traffic
and transportation, health and the
environment, education and
technology,” she said.
Adagunodo added that alongside
sustainable tourism, the government
should invest massively in
infrastructure, give a facelift to the
state’s tourism assets, look into
taxation challenges in the hospitality
industry as well as the ratings and
classification of hotels.
She urged the government to
consolidate on the commendable
tourism work of the previous
administration.
