Adams, yesterday,
commended President
Muhammadu Buhari for
signing into law June 12 as
Democracy Day even as he
admonished him to go a
step further by ensuring
that Nigeria is properly
restructured.
Adams, who spoke
during the commemoration
of June 12 organized by
Oodua Peoples Congress,
OPC, said that
restructuring remains
imperative if the memory
of the late MKO Abiola
must be honoured.
He said: “If Nigeria is
properly restructured, the
spate of kidnapping,
banditry, cattle rustling and
clashes will become history.
“It is a shame that in the
21st century states still go
to Abuja, cap in hand, for
monthly allocations. That
action is, in itself, contrary
to the spirit of federalism.
Although we are in a
democracy, Nigeria is still
being governed through a
unitary system.”
He also used the avenue
to warn the perpetuators of
kidnapping in Yorubaland
to be mindful of their act,
saying: “I want to say it with
pride that the Yoruba were
never conquered and
nobody can conquer
Yorubaland.
“Those behind this
dastardly act should repent
now or face the music soon.
The patience of our people
has been exhausted. As the

joint campus committee in
Oyo State, yesterday, led a
protest to the Governor’s
Office, Agodi, Ibadan,
demanding from Governor
Seyi Makinde adequate
funding of education in the
state.
The students, who
stormed the state
secretariat, around 1:30 pm
were seen with placards
agitating for adequate
funding of education and

better welfare and
participation of students
in decision making
process on issues that
affect their well-being.''
“Reinstatement of all
victimised student leaders
across the state in which we
are aware of the situation
in the University of Ibadan.
And for the sake of records
our intervention is due.”
Renounce
membership of
secret societies,
Oluwo tells
Yoruba monarchs
IWO—THE Oluwo of
Iwo land, Oba Abdul-
Rasheed Akanbi,
yesterday, called on
traditional rulers in the
South West to renounce
their “membership of secret
societies”.
In a statement by his
press secretary, Ibraheem
Alli, the monarch urged the
traditional rulers to live up
to defend their status as
“divinely appointed rulers”
He said they ought not to
enslave themselves in
secret societies, charging
them to fight against those
societies and not to
empower them through
their membership.
He said: “Our foremost
Yoruba traditional rulers
must defend the status of
their long reign. As kings,
we have exclusive
authority over our subjects.”
“No office or status should
be more powerful,
influential and command
more respect than our
position as monarchs
because we enjoy divine
appointment.
“Many of the criminal
activities in the country
today are linkable to secret
societies. So, no labour is
lost fighting against
existence and membership
of the cults springing up at
alarming rates in the
country.
“I am giving an
assurance of my support for
the emancipation of
enslaved monarchs, who
have already submitted
their authorities to these
inferior secret bodies in
expectation of false spiritual
and monetary gains.''
