5 injured as explosion rocks Port Harcourt shopping mall<br />

explosion that rocked a<br />

popular shopping mall in Port<br />

Harcourt, Rivers State,<br />

yesterday, reportedly injured<br />

five people.<br />

The explosion, which<br />

occurred around 5p.m., forced<br />

the management to shut<br />

operations immediately.<br />

ADO-EKITI<strong>—</strong>THERE was<br />

confusion at Ilasa-Ekiti in<br />

Ekiti East, yesterday, as an<br />

unidentified herdsman chopped<br />

off the head of his girlfriend with<br />

a cutlass.<br />

The incident which occurred<br />

near a stream when the deceased<br />

went to fetch water, Tuesday<br />

evening, has thrown the agrarian<br />

community, popular for its<br />

huge yams’ market, into<br />

confusion.<br />

The assailant was said to<br />

have laid ambush, grabbed the<br />

girl from behind as she bent to<br />

collect water from the stream and<br />

chopped the head off.<br />

He was said to have taken<br />

to his heels after the act,<br />

but was later arrested<br />

through the<br />

information provided<br />

by the younger sister of the<br />

deceased, who was at the scene<br />

of the incident.<br />

Multiple sources in the<br />

community, including the<br />

traditional ruler, the Alasa of Ilasa,<br />

Oba Ajayi Omolagba, revealed<br />

that the young lady had been<br />

allegedly betrothed to the<br />

suspected assailant as a future<br />

wife, while she was still a<br />

teenager in line with their custom<br />

many, who had gone to the<br />

shopping mall for relaxation to<br />

mark the June 12 celebration of<br />

Democracy Day, were still at the<br />

centre when explosion went off.<br />

A source, who did not want<br />

his name in print, disclosed that<br />

the explosion happened in one<br />

of the kitchens.<br />

The source disclosed that it<br />

was a gas cylinder that<br />

exploded, adding that five of<br />

the staff working in the kitchen<br />

and tradition.<br />

According to the sources,<br />

trouble started last month when<br />

the suspect requested the lady to<br />

spend the Eld el-Fitr with him,<br />

but the family of the lady<br />

refused to release her,<br />

a situation which<br />

angered the suspect,<br />

who assumed the<br />

contract had been<br />

breached<br />

by the<br />

Meanwhile, the Public<br />

Relations Officer of the Rivers<br />

State Police Command, DSP<br />

Nnamdi Omoni, confirmed that<br />

the explosion came from a<br />

cooking gas cylinder used in<br />

one of the kitchens.<br />

Omoni also confirmed that<br />

five persons were injured,<br />

adding that they have been<br />

hospitalised.<br />

NAF helicopter crash-lands<br />

in Katsina, detonates bomb<br />

K ATSINA<strong>—</strong>RESIDENTS<br />

near the Umaru Musa<br />

Yar’Adua International Airport,<br />

Katsina State were, yesterday,<br />

gripped by fear when a Nigerian<br />

Air Force, NAF, helicopter<br />

involved in the anti-armed<br />

banditry combat mission in the<br />

North-West under Operation<br />

Hadaran Daji crash-landed and<br />

allegedly detonated a bomb in the<br />

airport.<br />

Sources said the helicopter<br />

crash-landed while returning<br />

from operation and detonated a<br />

bomb.<br />

It was gathered that the empty<br />

shell of the bomb smashed<br />

glasses in the new terminal wing<br />

of the airport and hit a residential<br />

house few metres from the airport.<br />

A combined team of soldiers,<br />

Police, Air Force, officials of the<br />

FAAN barricaded the main gate<br />

to the airport, making it difficult<br />

to gain entrance into the area.<br />

Zaharadeen Dayyabu, one of<br />

the landlords whose house was<br />

hit by the empty shell of the<br />

detonated bomb, said his fence<br />

saved him and his family from<br />

being hurt by the bomb.<br />

According to him, “we were in<br />

the house with my family when<br />

we heard a heavy sound. My wife<br />

was the first to run out, only to<br />

see our fence penetrated by the<br />

empty bomb shell.<br />

“It was the fence to my house<br />

that protected and saved us from<br />

being hit by the shell. It was God<br />

that saved us.”<br />

Omolagba, said the community<br />

has been in shock since the<br />

incident occurred.<br />

He said he had summoned the<br />

families of all parties involved and<br />

their landlords to a meeting,<br />

where resolutions were reached<br />

on how to forestall future<br />

occurrence.<br />

Oba Omolagba noted that the<br />

community would also make<br />

necessary appeasements to the<br />

gods, as such an incident was<br />

strange and a taboo in the land.<br />

Officer in the state, Caleb<br />

Ikechukwu, who confirmed the<br />

killing, said the suspect had been<br />

arrested while investigations into<br />

the incident had commenced.<br />

… as herders kill one in Osun<br />

In another development, some<br />

herders, yesterday, reportedly<br />

attacked passengers on the Ife-<br />

Ibadan Highway, killing one<br />

person.<br />

It was gathered that the dead<br />

man was identified as Mr.<br />

Adenipekun Ademiju, a worker<br />

in the Atakumosa West Local<br />

Government Area of Osun State.<br />

Ademiju was said to have<br />

boarded a vehicle at Osu town<br />

going to Ibadan, when he and<br />

other passengers were attacked<br />

at Ikire community along the<br />

expressway.<br />

According to an eyewitness,<br />

Ademiju was hit by bullet as the<br />

robbers fired indiscriminately to<br />

forcefully stop the vehicle.<br />

The eyewitness said: “The man<br />

was killed instantly by herdsmen,<br />

who rob regularly on this road. It<br />

was Ademiju and the driver that<br />

were in the car, but while the<br />

robbers were shooting<br />

indiscriminately to forcefully stop<br />

them, the bullet hit the deceased.<br />

“The driver ran into a nearby<br />

bush and Ademiju’s body was left<br />

on the highway by the robbers,<br />

who went away with the car.”<br />

SP Folashade Odoro, who<br />

confirmed the incident in an<br />

interview with newsmen, said<br />
