We've lost greater part of
democratic gains to Boko
Haram—Gov Zulum
By Ndahi
Marama
M AIDUGURI—
GOVERNOR
Babagana Zulum of Borno
State has said the activities
of Boko Haram insurgents
have eroded the dividends
of democracy from the
people of the state for over
a decade.
Zulum spoke while
addressing citizens of the
state to mark Democracy
Day at Ramat Square,
Maiduguri.
According to him, over 80
per cent of state’s
infrastructural facilities
were destroyed by
insurgents, saying: “Over
the years, we lost greater
part of our democratic
gains to the devilish acts
and destructive tendencies
of Boko Haram insurgents.
Fuludu urges Delta Ijaw
lawmakers to sponsor riverine
communities devt agency bill
By Onozure
Dania
THE Leader, Burutu
Local Government Area
Legislative Arm, Delta State,
Mr Joseph Fuludu,
yesterday, urged the five
Delta Ijaw lawmakers in the
state House of Assembly to
sponsor a bill for the
establishment of riverine
Communities Development
Agency.
Fuludu also appealed to
Governor Ifeanyi Okowa to
consider development of the
riverine communities as it
was imperative to make life
more meaningful for the
coastal community dwellers.
Speaking to journalists at
a reception ceremony in
honour of Mr. Kenneth
Preyor, member
representing Bomadi
constituency; Mr. Peter
Forteta, member
representing Burutu
constituency 1; Mr.
communities and high
number of Internally
Displaced Persons, IDPs, in
the country.”
On other destroyed
facilities, the governor said:
“In the 10-year insurgency,
there were destruction of
irrigation facilities with
collapse of market and
trading facilities. This led
to high levels of food
insecurity. The task before
us is enormous, given the
meagre resource base of the
state. We will never relent
or give up.”
Speaking on security, he
said: “Within the two weeks
of my assumption of office,
I have garnered support to
reinorce security measures
and adopt additional
strategies to counter the
insurgency. I have taken
measures to empower
Civilian JTF, give logistic
support to all security
operatives.”
Ekpotuayerin Pullah,
member representing
Burutu constituency II; Mr.
Emmanuel Senebe, member
representing Patani
constituency, and Mr.
Emomotimi Guwor, member
representing Warri South-
West constituency after their
inauguration into the Delta
State House of Assembly at
Asaba, noted that much
responsibility had been given
to them.
He specifically called on
Preyor, who is the highest
ranking member among the
five lawmakers, to take the
lead and jointly sponsor a bill
for the establishment of
Riverine Communities
Development Agency.
He said:“The riverine
areas of the state are in dire
need for roads and bridges
because of its terrain, hence
this clarion call and demand
since Deltans have identified
Okowa as road master across
the state and silent achiever.”
Delta group commends
Omo-Agege
By Olayinka
Ajayi
THE Vanguard for Political
Expediency, Delta State
has congratulated Senator
Ovie Omo-Agege on his
election as Deputy Senate
President.
The group in a statement
by Akpofure Omoniunu and
Omasone Erute, Chairman
and Secretary respectively
said it believed in Omo-
Agege’s capacity, though he
was one of the last to be
inaugurated in the 8th
Senate but he left his
imprints in that legislative
session.
“Though he was the last
senator to the red chambers,
he has left his print in the
sand of time in the 8th
Assembly. We, therefore,
believe that he is most
qualified for the position
from the South-South Zone.”
The group blamed
immediate past All
Progressives Congress,
APC, National Chairman,
Chief John Oyegun, for
causing disaffection in the
Delta State chapter of APC.
It said: “A very clear case
in point is the on-going legal
battle in Delta State chapter.
He hurriedly inaugurated a
faction of the party into
leadership without due
process, which was latter set
aside and this single action
ruined the fortunes of the
party in the just concluded
elections in the state.”
Taraba, Benue collaborating to fight
kidnapping, other crimes — Bwacha
past Deputy Senate
Emmanuel Bwacha (PDP,
NGO organises free surgeries in memory of
Okparavero
AS part of activities
marking the 10th
anniversary of the death of
Chief Godwin Okparavero
who passed away on June
17, 2009, free surgeries
(fibroids and thyroids) took
place from June 3 to 7, 2019.
disclosed that as part of
moves to nip in the bud,
kidnapping and violent
crimes in Taraba and Benue
states, government of the two
states have resolved to
collaborate to tackle the
These were carried out in
collaboration with Sunshine
Medical Care Initiative, an
NGO founded and headed
by Freeborn Ukpede.
No fewer than 35
surgeries were done (27
myomectomies and eight
thyroidectomies) by
volunteer healthcare
challenges.
Disclosing this in Abuja at
a reception in his honour by
his constituents after the
inauguration of the 9th
National Assembly, Bwacha
said skirmishes in the state
personnel from Sunshine
Medical Care Initiative,
DELSUTH and staff of
Okparavero Memorial
Hospital.
Also, there was an
opening ceremony on June
3 to flag off the anniversary
activities.
SURGERIES: Doctors carrying out surgeries on some patients in
collaboration with Sunshine Medical Care Initiative, an NGO
founded and headed by Freeborn Ukpede as part of activities marking
the 10th anniversary of the death of Chief Godwin Okparavero, in
Delta State.
were “largely informed by
the activities of criminal
elements in the borders of
Taraba and Benue,” noting
that “government is working
assiduously to get to the root
of the matter.”
Bwacha said: “I want to call
on all of us from the south to
embrace peace. If there is
anything we need in the
south, it's peace. The devil
is using some individuals to
create instability in the region
and I want to say that we are
simply one set of people, we
are brothers and sisters, we
don’t need to take up arms
against one another; there is
really no need for that.
“The devil is lurking
around our neighbourhood
to see where they can take
advantage of any opening
and see that we begin to
fight. Whatever we do at the
end of the day, we will still
come and sit on the round
table and dialogue. So, why
can’t we explore those
areas?
“I know the ongoing
skirmishes are largely
informed by the activities of
criminal elements in the
borders of Taraba and Benue.
The criminals take advantage
of this because they know
when there is peace, they
cannot perpetrate their
criminal enterprise and so
they want us to take arms
against ourselves so that they
have time to kidnap people
and lay ransom on
individuals to pay.
“So I want to encourage us,
let us not be tired, let us
explore all avenues that
peace should reign.
"I want to inform you that I
am collaborating with my
colleague from Benue North
West, Senator Gabriel
Suswam, who is a one-time
governor in the state. The
two of us will meet our
governors and they are also
working out something to
ensure that this crisis is
brought to an end.
