Dm ROUNDTABLE: GDPR
GDPR one year on: cause for celebration?
The EU GDPR has been in force for a whole year now, but what has been its real
impact on the document and content management sectors as well as the wider
world? DM Magazine shares insights from a selection of industry luminaries in an
attempt to clarify some of the issues
May 2019 marked the first
anniversary of the
implementation of the EU
General Data Protection Regulation, and
early indications would seem to suggest
that it has so far been a success as a
breach notification law. GDPR has been
seen to impact on multiple aspects of a
business - perhaps more than many had
expected beforehand. It has for instance
created increased requirements for
businesses to deal with issues such as
security, compliance, data ownership,
training and data management. The
new regulation has required a
as a reminder of what ought to be
done, but instead as a proper new
regulation. It has changed how
organisations collect and manage data
and personal information, busting the
myth that data management lived in
the IT department silo and making it
relevant for everyone. That has required
extensive investment in people and
tools to oversee, and a re-evaluation of
business relationships with suppliers
and customers alike."
So has GDPR been the game-changer
that many anticipated, wreaking
corporate havoc along the lines of
Sarbanes-Oxley in its day? Some argue
that it has in fact had a far more
positive influence on organisational
behaviours. "Before May 2018 GDPR
was thought to be a regulation that
had the potential to end companies
overnight, but that hasn't happened,"
says PFU's Mike Nelson. "Instead, it's
