Jerry recovering from brutal attack
‘He was
bleeding
everywhere’
• By Georgia O’Connor-
Harding
NICHOLA Crawford cannot
fathom the kindness that has
been shown to her following
the brutal attack of her
german shepherd Jerry.
The Riccarton resident
was walking her son’s dog
Jerry along Wharenui Rd
recently when three unrestrained
dogs appeared from
an unfenced property and
attacked him.
“I was a mess, I don’t
remember most of it . . . I was
trying to hold Jerry but he
was on his choker chain, so
I was trying to sort of swing
him around but it was all just
so quick . . . he was bleeding
everywhere,” Ms Crawford
said.
The owner of the three dogs
along with members of the
public helped throughout the
attack, but Ms Crawford has
not heard from the owner
since.
The attack left Jerry with
puncture wounds along his
abdomen, numerous bites and
a wound on his neck.
RIGHT-LEANING Independent
Citizens candidate Catherine
Chu will no longer be running
uncontested for the city council’s
Riccarton Ward in October’s local
body elections.
Former
Halswell-Hornby-Riccarton
Community
Board member
Peter Laloli has
put his name
forward to run
independently
against Ms Chu Peter Laloli
for the job.
The decision was prompted
by current city councillor Vicki
Buck’s announcement to depart
from politics at the end of the
term.
The retired policeman and Riccarton
resident said he had been
considering running for the community
board, but now that Ms
Buck isn’t standing, he will put his
name forward for city council as
well.
Mr Laloli served on the
community board for 15 years
– two terms as the chairman of
the board – before he failed to be
re-elected in 2016.
Daniel Meehan won the junior 60kg
A student at Christchurch Boys’ High and member of the
Smiling Tigers club, it follows on from his recent South Island
useful man with the gloves in his day too.
Fuller said he wasn’t surprised by Daniel’s win in Rotorua, which
“Because of his work rate and his angle changes I think he
had his opponent flummoxed, it was a really convincing win for
Kyle Park reclassification
Decision
likely
today
• By Georgia O’Connor-Harding
A MAJOR step could be taken
today to get the long-awaited
Hornby mega-facility built.
The Halswell-Hornby-Riccarton
Community Board will
consider approving a recommendation
made by a hearings
panel to reclassify part of Kyle
Park and update the Kyle Park
Management Plan 1993.
The changes need to be made
to enable the Hornby
Library, Service Centre
and South West Pool to
be accommodated at the
eastern end of Kyle Park.
Last month, a hearings
panel made up of
Papanui-Innes Community
Board deputy chairwoman
Emma Norrish,
city councillors Sara Templeton
and Tim Scandrett considered
181 submissions on the proposal.
DECISION TIME: The Halswell-Hornby-Riccarton Community
Board may give final approval today to reclassify part of Kyle
Park to allow the Hornby mega-facility to go ahead.
The city council received 163
submissions in favour and 23
in opposition following
public consultation in
March and April.
On June 17, the
hearings panel recommended
the changes go
ahead.
Other recommendations
made was for an
upgrade to the Kyle
Park underpass to be aligned
with the work on the Hornby
mega-facility, as proposed by a
Marc Duff
Crime Protection through Environmental
Design report.
It also supported the community’s
wish to enhance the
amenity of Kyle Park including
land remediation and working
with the Ministry of Education
to install a safe crossing between
Hornby Primary and Hornby
High School.
Greater Hornby Residents’
Association chairman Marc
Duff and member Mark Peters,
who will be attending the
meeting on Tuesday, are hoping
the recommendation will go
ahead to allow for the Hornby
facility to be built as soon as
possible.
Board chairman Mike Mora
agreed and said he hoped there
would be no “hold-ups” at the
meeting.
If the changes go ahead, the
city council will be asked to
confirm the site and scope of the
facility – this confirmation is
scheduled for September.
Last year extensive
geotechnical and contamination
testing undertaken on the
former landfill site by the city
council confirmed Kyle Park
could be safely built on.
Landfill gas testing also began
at the park in April and will run
for about 12 months.
City council head of
recreation sports and events
Nigel Cox said gas comes out
of landfills naturally as rubbish
decomposes.
“If the Kyle Park site is
confirmed, the landfill gas
testing will provide information
needed to mitigate any gasses
in the design of the facility. We
started the testing early so that
we would have the test results
before we start any design
process,” he said.
In Brief
RESIDENTS’ PARKING
A parking restriction exception
scheme could be installed on
two streets in Upper Riccarton
and Ilam. The Halswell-Hornby-
Riccarton Community Board
will today consider approving
the scheme on Athol Tce and
Rutherglen Ave so residents
living on the street don’t have
to comply to the P120 time
limit restrictions. The scheme
allows residents in the street to
purchase a permit for a specific
vehicle. The cost of the permit
is currently $54 per year but
is subject to change due to the
permits requiring to be renewed
annually.
WATER STRATEGY
The Halswell-Hornby-Riccarton
Community Board will
meet tomorrow to make a
submission on the city council’s
Draft Integrated Water Strategy.
The aim of the strategy is
to develop a framework to
help manage the city’s water
resources, values and demands.
Consultation closes on July 21.
The meeting will be held at the
Te Hapua: Halswell Centre at
noon. To make a submission and
to find out more information go
to the city council’s have your
Veterinary practice
“The Needle”
Last week the decision was
made to open up my beautiful
girl Lola to retrieve a “bent
needle” somewhere in her
abdomen. I debated over this
for 24 hours as I don’t like
her having anaesthetics and
I hate cutting her open. She
was telling me she wasn’t
right though, lagging behind
on walks and eventually not
wanting to leave the house,
tucked up sore in her abdomen,
head hung low and those sad
eyes staring at me. She may not
speak English but she sure talks
to me.
She is loved and adored by
everyone at the clinic so my
nurses took blood from her
and run them in house. Everything tested
was within normal limits. Richard Lucy then
ultrasounded her abdomen and again
nothing of concern was seen - thankfully.
We radiographed her spine which appeared
normal. What we did find was what looked
to be a needle
sitting ventrally
in her abdomen. I
was aware of the
needle after her
first surgery to
remove her kidney
due to cancer. The
specialist surgeon
mistakenly had
left it behind. I had
been monitoring
its position with
regular X-rays
and it hadn’t
moved in years.
Last week when
we radiographed her the needle
had moved and appeared bent,
necessitating removal.
My colleague surgically operated
on Lola as I find it difficult to cut my
girl open. The rusty looking needle was
removed and it had passed through a lobe
of liver causing adhesions to the peritoneal
wall lining. This would have caused her pain.
These were freed up and she was closed and
recovered so quickly with the aid of our “Bear
Hugger’ which blows warm air around Lola
on recovery.
She’s getting lots of TLC at
home and work and with my
clients. She’s adored by so
many and everyone wants
her to recover speedily. She’s
fought kidney cancer and
chemo, split pad disease and
intervertebral disc disease.
She’s hard to keep down
and out for too long. So far
so good ( Lucky her parents
are vets!!)- she’s more
comfortable and
moving better and
that needle had
to go!!
• By Devon Bolger
WHEN SUSAN Iffland
first got a call to say she
had won a $40,000 electric
car, she was in disbelief.
“I asked the man on the
other end about 12 times
if he was tricking me and
then later I emailed to ask
if we actually got to keep
the car, not just drive it for
a while.”
But she really had won
the competition after
entering the Star Media
Home and Living Show
which was held between
June 28 and 30.
The car was gifted by
HVS Ltd.
Sales and finance manager
Richard Gardyne said
he was glad it went to Mrs
Iffland.
“I’m stoked, they seem
to genuinely like the
vehicle a lot, so it’s a great
result.”
Mrs Iffland said now
that she knows it isn’t all a
joke, she’s thrilled and the
car couldn’t have come at a
better time.
“We’ve been saving for
a holiday but we thought
that money really should
go on a new car, and now
we’ve won one.”
Her husband Ben said
the couple’s 2004 Volkswagen
Golf was causing
constant issues for them.
“Every time we would
take it for a warrant of
fitness or service, there
would be another problem
with it.”
He said he’s had his eye
on an electric car for a
while.
“I’ve been wanting one
myself, I think they’re great
and I’m definitely a big fan
of saving the planet.”
Mrs Iffland won the car
drawn from 4000 entries.
She said she can’t believe
her name was selected.
“Half the time you
just think, does anyone
actually win these? But it
really does it happen.”
Jerry on road to recovery
•From page 1
He was taken to the vet where
he was sedated so his wounds
could be drained, cleaned
and stitched up – he was also
prescribed antibiotics and painkillers.
Ms Crawford said she doesn’t
blame the dogs or their owner
– but she would like a fence
installed on their property and
has asked the city council’s dog
control team to follow up.
“I said to dog control I don’t
want to take money off them because
it wouldn’t be right. I have
already got the money raised,”
she said.
Within four days after
setting up a Givealittle page to
raise money to cover Jerry’s vet
bill, $1027 was donated by 61
people.
Ms Crawford said most of the
money came on the day she set
up the page and she was overwhelmed
by everyone’s support.
The vet bill was $950, but Ms
Crawford also had additional
costs to cover having Jerry’s
stitches cleaned.
Axel Jones, who made a
donation, said he didn’t know
Ms Crawford but it was such an
unfortunate story.
“As a dog owner you feel that’s
like a friend being attacked and
no doubt a very scary experience
RECOVERING: Jerry the german shepherd was badly injured
following an attack by three unrestrained dogs on Wharenui
Rd recently.
with a big bill to go with it.”
Since the attack, Ms Crawford,
who already has anxiety, said
she has been having panic attacks.
“That was my worst thought
ever happening and now it has
happened,” she said.
Ms Crawford said she has
been left afraid to take Jerry out
but she is hoping with “baby
steps” she will be able to take
him walking regularly again
soon.
•From page 1
But Ms Chu said his decision
to run against her doesn’t change
a lot.
She said his experience could
not be ignored but she hopes to
bring a fresh perspective.
“It has always been about me
fighting for what I believe is right
and fighting for the residents
and being a strong
voice for them,” she said.
In the last elections,
Mr Laloli came third in
the race to secure the
city council’s Halswell
Ward with 1337 votes
– losing by 796 votes to
city councillor Anne
Galloway and 702 votes
to Halswell Community Project
chairwoman Chrys Horn.
He also lost to current community
board members Debbie
Mora by 780 votes and 506 votes
to Ross McFarlane in a bid for
a place on the board with 2634
votes.
But Mr Laloli said: “If you can’t
afford to lose, don’t stand.”
He said his reasoning for his
bid to return to the board is because
“nothing has happened in
three years.”
“The things on the agenda are
council spending
Catherine Chu
exactly the same as what was
there when I left,” he said.
Mr Laloli said some of
these issues being the Hornby
Library, Customer Services and
Recreation and Sport Centre
and roadwork issues on Riccarton
Ms Chu agreed there is too
much bureaucracy that
goes on which wastes time
and process.
“That is why on council
level I want to be able to
make sure this less of that
and things get done more
efficiently,” she said.
Ms Chu said she
believes she can achieve
more on a council level
than at the board – some of her
goals are to review council spending,
Yr 7/8 South West Zones Basketball Tournament
The Year 7/8 Basketball team competed at the South West Zones tournament at
Wharenui Stadium.
The South West Zones Basketball Tournament was held at Wharenui Stadium
on Tuesday 18 June. Nine Senior Students represented Oaklands at this
tournament.
We played a total of four games, wining one of them and losing the other three by
small margins. The team can be very proud of their efforts which resulted in them
finishing third overall.
It was great to see the team working well together with lots of passing and
working together for the common good of the team. Thanks to Marie, Eddie
and Amanda for helping out with
transport. Without our fantastic
parent helpers we could not do what
we do.
While we have not progressed on
to the next round of competition,
we will take our learnings from the
tournament and transfer these into
our weekly Friday games. We look
forward to more exciting Basketball
as the season progresses.
Oaklands School Rebuild
Our rebuild is underway watch our website for updates
Hub 5 Park Detectives
All three Hub 5 classes have visited the Botanic Gardens and were involved
in some learning called ‘Park Detectives’, this was run by educators from the
Christchurch City Council.
The Park Detectives Programme was an informative and interactive lesson and
the children learnt about.....birds, bugs and trees. They discovered how birds
communicate and pollinate our flowers and trees. Students also got a chance
to do some bird watching. They had some great encounters with some fantail.
After that, the children learnt about bugs and how they are so important to the
decomposition of the trees and vegetation. Finally, the students looked at the
New Zealand native trees and how they help our environment. Thanks to all of
our parent helpers!
Josie Leoni’s recap:
On Thursday the 23rd of May 5DH went on a wonderful trip! It took 10 - 15
minutes, once we got to the gardens we got straight into the 1st activity. We
got given a card and got told, “Don’t show ANYONE”. We played a fun game
where we had to find our other bird family by using the voice of the bird. I was a
“Piwakawaka” also known as a “Fantail” after we found our brothers and sisters
we had to find our parent, the fantail’s parent was Jenna’s grandpa.
When we had finished we then had another activity we listened, to the wonderful
chirping of birds. We had a notepad where we recorded the birds.
Hub 3 and 4 at Orana Park!
Hub 3 and 4 were fortunate enough to be able to go to
Orana Park. We had been looking forward to this trip for a
long time, and it did not disappoint!
The weather was kind to us which made for an easy walk
around the zoo. We learnt so much about all the different
animals and sustainability.
We split into our classes and went with different tour
guides. The guides captivated the student’s attention –
and indeed our and the parents – for the entire day, as
their knowledge was taken in by us and the students as
we explored each of the species the Park had to offer. We
saw and learnt more about animals such as the Gorillas,
Cheetahs, Rhinos, Giraffes, Tigers, Birds, and Spider
Monkeys!
The children added to their knowledge of sustainability – to help protect the
Gorillas, you can recycle your old mobile phone! This is so that manufacturers
can reuse a certain material in phones that is found in Gorillas’ habitats! This way,
people don’t have to keep destroying their homes! Also palm oil products were
recommended that we do not buy these products, as Tigers are facing a similar
problem! We all really enjoyed our time at Orana Park and can not wait to learn
more about animals and sustainability in the classroom!
Hub 6 @ Travis Wetlands
Hub 6 visited Travis Wetlands as part of their Science Unit on Sustainability.
See below for some students writing about the Travis Wetlands.
Travis Wetlands - The bus ride was 40 minutes long and quite bumpy, when we
got to the wetlands we had a quick snack and an introduction. After that, we went
to the information centre and found out that 200 years ago, 95% of New Zealand
was wetlands before the Europeans came along. We also found out that a wetland
is like a bed and breakfast, a sieve, an airport, a sponge and a home. Then we split
off into our two groups, my group headed off with Pete to look at water creatures.
We used the retrieval device (a sieve on a stick) to catch the water creatures.
Keisha got super lucky and got about fifteen water creatures on her first go, they
include the water boatman, the backswimmer and the mite. Not long after that, I
found a damselfly nymph and it was going crazy. We also found a water snail, but
we let it go because it wasn’t moving.
Then Pete took ours to show it to
everyone because we had caught the
most. We let them go to finish, which
was sad because I had gotten attached
to those guys. - Written by Scarlett.
Travis Wetlands - As we hopped off the
bus 6RF and half of 6SL put their bags
down. Pete (the instructor) gave us an
introduction about what we were going
to do. We split into two groups and had
two activities. Pete also said how the
Wetlands is a home, a sieve, a bed and
breakfast, a sponge and an airport. He
also explained how 200 years ago 95%
of the land was covered in wetlands,
but now only 4% is left. My first activity
was bird watching. Peter was the name
of the instructor helping us as we got to
the place, it was in a little hut. He told us
to grab binoculars and watch for birds.
I saw paradise ducks, black swans
and shuffler. I enjoyed going to Travis
Wetlands!

Dangerous intersection upgrade plan
• By Georgia O’Connor-Harding
A PLAN to turn the city’s
fourth most dangerous
junction into a T-intersection
to reduce crashes has received
mixed feedback.
The city council has received
137 submissions on
its proposal for a $1 million
safety upgrade at the Middleton,
Ilam and Riccarton Rd
intersection.
A seminar
on the
intersection
was held
between
city council
staff and the
Halswell-
Hornby-
Helen
Broughton
Riccarton
Community
Board last
week.
Board deputy chairwoman
Helen Broughton said she
couldn’t comment on the
meeting due to it being publicly
excluded.
She said there had been
mixed feedback on banning
right turns from Ilam Rd onto
Riccarton Rd, but did not
appear to be “overwhelming
opposition” to the plan.
The plan would involve
restricting Riccarton Rd from
Middleton Rd to left turns in
and out only, as well as narrowing
the road to allow more
footpath space for pedestrians.
The left turn slip lanes from
Ilam Rd into Riccarton Rd
would also be removed.
Mrs Broughton said she
would prefer to have the
intersection realigned so that
Ilam Rd connected through to
Middleton Rd.
The intersection is ranked
the city’s fourth most dangerous
with 40 crashes with
varying degree of injury since
2011.
“It is a very dangerous
intersection. We have always
wanted it done but we have
never been able to get it done,
the reason now is it is part of
the cycleway programme,”
Mrs Broughton said.
The intersection will be upgraded
as part of the Nor’West
Arc Major Cycle Route, which
was approved in March last
year.
A report will be presented
to the board on July 23 with
submissions on the proposal
to be made public at the same
time.
Skylah’s bid to reduce road toll
A YEAR 12 Villa Maria
College student wants to help
reduce New Zealand’s road
toll.
Skylah Holmes is one of
12 students from around the
country to have been chosen
as a national student representative
for Students Against
Dangerous Driving.
Skylah will empower young
people to make safer and better
choices on the road as both
drivers and passengers.
The national leadership
programme for SADD fosters
young emerging leaders who
are passionate about safe driving
and making a difference in
their community.
As part of the programme,
Skylah, of Halswell, will travel
to different parts of the country
to participate in workshops
to develop new resources,
campaigns and ideas that will
positively impact on New Zealand’s
roads.
“I am proud to represent
Villa Maria College on this national
platform and hope that
as a team, we can make a real
difference to our nation’s road
toll,” said Skylah.
She said it is important all
young drivers understand and
appreciate what constitutes
dangerous driving, and have
tools to ensure they are safe on
the roads.
“This also goes for passengers.
I want to see the road toll
dramatically reduced, I want
everyone who heads out in
their vehicles each day to get to
their destinations safely, and
get home to their loved ones.”
Skylah said.
She is passionate about road
safety and is planning a number
of initiatives at the school
to promote road safety to her
fellow students.
“Young people can make
a difference. By teaching our
young people about road
safety, we hope this flows to
the rest of the community
and creates safer roads for
everyone,” Skylah said.
Poetry inspires peace garden
• By Georgia O’Connor-Harding
SIRWAN MOHAMADI loves
writing poetry.
“As a human, I need to express
myself in a certain way, it is
about expressing feelings and
emotions and putting it on
paper,” he said.
His passion for writing is what
inspired him to build a garden
as a statement of peace and
unity within the multi-cultural
community at Harrington Park
in Riccarton.
Mohamadi has been working
with members of the community,
including the Oak Development
Trust, on the concept of the
Riccarton Peace Garden.
The idea was presented to the
Halswell-Hornby-Riccarton
Community Board last week in
a bid to form a partnership with
city council park staff on the
project.
A key element Mohamadi is
planning for the garden is to
have standing stones, similar to
Stonehenge, which people can
write on.
“The idea is about inspiring
the young generation into
writing . . . one of the ideas is to
inspire young people to express
themselves in a way that is
artistic and can help mentally
and emotionally,” he said.
The group also plans to
transform an outer ring
surrounding the stones into a
path of pebbles with railing for
elderly people.
The aim is for the garden to
complement the Harrington
Park playground renewal, with
work planned to be completed in
October.
Mohamadi, who is originally
from Iran, said the garden is not
about the March 15 attacks, but
about respecting diversity in
Riccarton.
But he said everyone will have
different opinions on what the
garden may relate to.
It comes as The New
Zealand Federation of Islamic
Associations revealed designs
last month for a proposed
mosque attack memorial either
at the Christchurch Botanic
Gardens or Linwood Cemetery.
Garden in
Harrington
Park has
been
presented to
the Halswell-
Hornby-
Riccarton
Community
Board.
The proposal, which would
include an ornamental water
feature, conference centre and
playground, could cost more
than $15 million.
Mohamadi said the
Harrington Park project is still
in the planning stages and city
council staff will need to be
involved in establishing the cost
of the project, but it will be open
to financial support.
The idea was well-received by
the board. Chairman Mike Mora
congratulated the group.
Said city councillor Vicki
Buck: “I think it is wonderful and
I love the idea of a community
park.”
The garden proposal has
been passed onto city council
staff for consideration and will
come back to the community
board.
Students presented their own repertoire at the Musical Extravaganza
Riccarton High School was again successful
in this year’s winter sports tournament, the
Kaikorai Exchange, in which they competed
against Kaikorai Valley College in Dunedin, with
a handsome shield at stake.
The two schools take turns to visit each other
for summer and winter tournaments each year,
and this time it was RHS’s turn to host their
Dunedin counterparts. The tournament took
place on June 13 and 14, with the RHS team led
by the school’s heads of sport, Orion Chau and
Grace Ward.
The students competed in badminton, hockey,
rugby, basketball, netball, football, table tennis,
theatre sports – and a new event this year,
debating. The RHS team won everything except
the table tennis and debating, picking up the
shield for the 38th time.
A highlight of the event was the social on the
Grace Ward and Orion Chau display
the Kaikorai Exchange shield.
Thursday evening, with a sun, sand and surf
Hawaiian theme, and music provided by DJ
Chris Singh – the school’s counsellor in his other
life.
The tournaments have been held since 1959
and over the years have seen many strong
friendships forged between the students from
the competing schools.
Riccarton High School’s music students had the
opportunity to showcase their diverse talents
in the annual Musical Extravaganza held in the
school hall on May 30.
There was a full house for the event, which
featured all musical genres taught in the school,
ranging from classical and jazz to contemporary
and funk, and performances included concert
bands, jazz bands and combos. The students
had put together a repertoire of their own
OpeN NIGHT ATTRACTS HuNdRedS TO RHS
Around 900 people turned up for
Riccarton High School’s open night
on May 16, all taking the opportunity
to visit the school and get a taste
of what it has to offer potential
students.
“Previously, our open day was held
in two parts with a presentation
evening followed by a series of
afterschool tours, but this year we
changed it and opened the school up
to the community and prospective
students and their families in the
evening,” Principal Neil Haywood says.
There were two sessions – one at 5.pm and
one at 6.30pm. Each one kicked off with a
presentation in the hall where Neil and several
other speakers provided information about the
school, after which visitors were shown around
the nine curriculum areas.
“We had 130 students on site demonstrating
aspects of the curriculum and interacting with
the visitors, and these were very popular,” Neil
says.
“We had very good feedback on the evening,
with people commenting on the passionate
teachers, the students as wonderful
ambassadors for their school, and the family
atmosphere and sense of inclusion that
Riccarton High School presents.”
There was also a lot of technical work behind
the scenes, with the students making sure
the sound levels and lighting were right. “It’s
a big event for the students and it gives them
a chance to show leadership,” says teacher in
charge of music, Anne-Marie Plummer.
The music department presents three major
performance opportunities each year – the
Musical Extravaganza in May, the Music Soiree
in September and the Junior Showcase in
December.
Student demonstrations were popular
with visitors to the open night.
A number of parents filled out enrolment forms
on the night, with a large amount of interest still
being generated by those out of zone, Neil says.
“Our reputation for diversity and inclusion still
attracts people from out of our normal school
zone.”
The intake for 2020 will be approximately 200
Year 9 students, the majority being in-zone
students, but with a limited number of out of
zone students being balloted in should numbers
permit it.
“As part of a wider zone review process across
Christchurch, we are currently working with the
Ministry of Education to slightly increase our in
zone and it will be interesting to see the effect
that this will have on our enrolment numbers. If
successful with the zone change this will come
into force at the beginning of 2020,” Neil says.
RICCARTON WAy SyMbOL ReCReATed
At Riccarton High School, the Riccarton Way
(RW) is the philosophy that underpins the way
students, teachers and staff think, act and feel
about themselves, others at the school, and
those in the local and international community.
It supports the school’s vision for the students
through emphasis on the key values of
commitment, honesty, respect and excellence.
Recently, the school’s media co-ordinator
Will Eason and the principal’s assistant Karen
Churchward took on the challenge of recreating
the RW symbol on the field with the students.
The symbol was last created and photographed
in 2012, and this year the task was to recreate
the symbol – this time, with 1100 students
instead of 900.
Groundskeeper John Steeds took the
measurements off the 2012 photo, adjusted
them, and marked out the shape for the
students to stand in. Network assistant Alex
Clark then flew a drone up to take photos and a
video of a perfect RW.
GIFTed STudeNTS NuRTuRed THROuGH eNRICHMeNT OppORTuNITIeS
Riccarton High School provides an extensive
programme for gifted students, and it is one
that has evolved and developed since Gifted
and Talented Education Co-ordinator Tania
Hawes started in her role more than 10 years
ago.
“Our Gifted and Talented Education programme
– GATE, is now very diverse, with a wonderful
mixture of areas,” Tania says.
“We are committed to providing for gifted
students in all areas – academically, musically,
sport – everything. It’s not purely academic.”
The programme offers many enrichment
opportunities, including a live Google site,
which students can access 24/7 and find a raft
of ever-changing content, Tania says. As well,
talented people come to the school and speak
to the students – two of those have been author
Eleanor Catton and sculptor Lew Summers, and
the students visit places such as the art gallery
and the Court Theatre, where they are shown
what goes on behind the scenes.
The school has also established links with
the University of Canterbury and with
professionals working in a variety of industries
so gifted students can discover the range of
opportunities open to them.
Gifted students are often those that sit outside
the bounds of normal assessment, Tania says,
and her goal is to give these students the
chance to see pathways to success. As she
explains, students with special abilities may not
realise it because they haven’t been exposed
to an environment in which those abilities are
recognised and encouraged.
“By talking to them about their interests we help
them realise what their special abilities are and
how they can develop them for future success,”
Tania says.
The school recently held a Gifted Awareness
Week to raise awareness of gifted students’
needs, and Riccarton High School also works in
with contributing primary schools to organise
a week of activities at the end of the year
designed specifically for gifted students, Tania
says.
Cookbook to honour Hornby legend
• By Georgia O’Connor-Harding
A COOKBOOK will be
produced to celebrate the life of a
“Hornby legend”.
Nova Mayo died at her home
on June 21 at the age of 79.
Heavily involved in the
Hornby community, nearly 1000
people turned out to honour
her life at a service at the Upper
Riccarton Methodist Church
recently.
“She was obviously a very kind
and caring person. She would
volunteer for anything and was
very committed to her community,”
her son Ashley Mayo said.
He said Mrs Mayo was a very
good cook and would often run
demonstrations for the Salvation
Army in Hornby and the Hei Hei
Broomfield Community Development
Trust, also known as 126
On The Corner.
She would also cater for many
community events including
break-ups at the Hornby Panthers
Rugby League Club.
But she was “famous” for her
cream horns – which is one of
many of her recipes along with
meringues and cinnamon oysters
which will be included in the
cookbook in her memory.
Mr Mayo said plans for the
cookbook are in the early stages
LOVED: Nova Mayo, who died at the age of 79, was described
as a legend in the Hornby community.
at the moment, but it is hoped it
will be able to raise funds to support
the community.
He said she was a “people’s
person” and it would often take
her about two to three hours to
get around the supermarket at
The Hub Hornby because she
was talking to people.
“She didn’t judge people. She
had dealings with members of
Parliament, gang dudes and
everyone was just a person to
her,” Mr Mayo said.
Many tributes have been
made online in honour of Mrs
Mayo – including from Greater
Christchurch Regeneration
Minister Megan Woods.
Dr Woods said she was a
passionate, generous, kind,
clever woman of Hornby
who supported many of her
campaigns and often provided
catering for volunteers on
election day.
Mrs Mayo was also a huge supporter
of Hornby High School.
She was involved in the
establishment of the school in
the 1970s, was on the PTA and
worked at school canteen for
about 15 years.
Hornby High School principal
Robin Sutton said she left her
own extraordinary and indelible
mark on the community and her
unmistakable and positive laugh
would be missed.
Mrs Mayo was involved
in volunteering for many
community groups including
the Hornby Community Care
Centre, the Rotary Club of
Hornby and the Christchurch
South Rotary Club.
She was one of about 3000
people awarded The New
Zealand 1990 Commemoration
Medal for her services to the
community.
“We only found out about it
when we were going through her
stuff the other day so she kept
that very quiet,” Mr Mayo said.
Boxing champ’s son takes title
• By Gordon Findlater
CHRISTCHURCH BOYS’ High
School’s Daniel Meehan has
continued his impressive junior
boxing career with a win at the
New Zealand Golden Gloves.
Meehan, 16, backed up his
recent South Island Golden
Glove title by going on to claim
the junior 60kg national Golden
Gloves title by unanimous
decision in Rotorua.
Boxing is in his blood. Meehan
is the son of Danny Meehan – a
former Jameson Belt holder.
The belt is awarded to the most
scientific senior boxer at the
national championships.
The teenager has been boxing
for the past four-and-a-half years
at the Smiling Tigers Boxing
Club under coach Mark Fuller.
Meehan’s title came as
little surprise to Fuller. He
has previously won two New
Zealand titles and an Australian
Golden Gloves title. He also
came into the NZ Golden Gloves
on the back of a win in Australia.
“Because of his work rate and
his angle changes I think he had
his opponent flummoxed, it was
a really convincing win for him,”
said Fuller.
Titles were also won by
Woolston boxers Hamuera
Tainui, Ryley Sutherland
and Meehan’s Smiling Tigers
clubmate Kwahli Beauchamp.
Tainui took out the junior 66kg
title, Sutherland won in the 46kg
SPORT
cadet, while Beauchamp won the
40kg cadet title.
All four Canterbury boxers
have also been selected in
the New Zealand junior
development squad following the
Golden Gloves. The squad will
travel to Australia later in the
year.
“They’ve actually started
concentrating on the juniors
as well which is really good
. . . this is the first time in a very
long time that they’ve sent away
a good size squad like this, it’s
going to be great and a good sign
of things to come I think,” said
Fuller.
“All of those four boys have
been around a wee while now,
they’re only young, but they’ve
got quite a bit of experience
and they’re only going to get
better with what the Canterbury
association is doing to support
them.”
CONTENDER: Daniel Meehan
won the junior 60kg title at
the New Zealand Golden
Gloves.
China
tournament
for student
footballers
THREE FOOTBALLERS from
western secondary schools have
been selected to represent New
Zealand at an under-16 women’s
tournament in China this month.
Alyssa Whinham of Riccarton
High School, Freya Lodge-
Whitham of Christchurch Girls’
High and Claudia Wilson of
Burnside High will take part in
the tournament from July 14 to
22 in Weifang, where they will
play three matches against yet-tobe-confirmed
Asian opposition.
They will be joined by three
other Canterbury players Kate
Taylor, Zoe McMeeken and Samantha
Senior in the squad of 18
which will be staking their claim
to be part of next year’s FIFA
U-17 Women’s World Cup.
“It will be a real eye-opener for
the players in terms of the level
required and . . . they need to go
out and showcase themselves,
both individually and collectively.
It should give us real clarity
around where we’re at, which
would be a good space to be in
15 months out from the World
Cup,” said coach Leon Birnie.
No players are returning from
last year’s U-17 Women’s World
Cup, in which the New Zealand
team captured the hearts of the
country’s sporting public with a
remarkable third place finish.

Eat healthy using delicious ingredients
Salads never need to
be boring, as seasonal
ingredients are just that
– seasonal. Winter brings
delicious flavours and
textures which go great with
grains. But don’t forget to
add a punchy dressing
Buckwheat with
autumn vegetables and
pomegranate dressing
Ingredients
250g buckwheat groats, rinsed
well
1 bulb fennel, cut into thin
wedges
250g pumpkin, peeled and
deseeded, cut into cubes
1 red onion, peeled and cut into
wedges
¼ cup parsley, roughly chopped
2 Tbsp fennel tops, roughly
chopped
Dressing
2 Tbsp pomegranate molasses
1 Tbsp maple syrup
4 Tbsp olive oil
¼ tsp ground cinnamon
Pinch of salt
Directions
Heat the oven to 200 deg C.
Bring a medium-sized pot of
lightly-salted water to the boil.
Add the rinsed buckwheat and
cook for 25-35min. The groats
should be tender when cooked.
Drain and rinse under cold
water. Put into a large bowl.
While the groats are cooking,
prepare the vegetables.
Put the chopped vegetables
into a bowl with enough olive
oil to coat them well. Season
with salt and cracked pepper.
Toss to combine. Spread evenly
over a suitably-sized oven dish.
Roast, turning occasionally so
the vegetables cook evenly and
colour all over (30min).
Add the ingredients together
and pour over the dressing in a
small bowl and whisk together.
Add the roasted vegetables to
the cooked buckwheat, drizzle
over the dressing and add the
herbs. Toss gently to combine,
taste and adjust, seasoning if
necessary.
Top off your healthy salad
with a nutritious treat
Hazelnut bliss balls
Ingredients
½ cup hazelnuts
½ orange (juice and grated zest)
1 cup fine coconut
1 Tbsp coconut oil
½ tsp cinnamon
1 Tbsp dark cacao powder
1 tsp vanilla essence
Pinch of salt
Chunks of your favourite (storebought)
dark chocolate for the
centre of each bliss ball.
Directions
Place all the bliss ball
ingredients (except the chunks
of chocolate) into a bowl and
mix well. Then roll balls out of
the mixture.
Push a chunk of chocolate into
the centre of each bliss ball while
shaping them in your hands. You
can choose how big you make
the bliss balls.

Learn business
and computing
for free
Vision College’s free 20-week Certificate in Business
(Administration and Technology) is a level 3 course
that offers computer skills within a business focus for
those wanting to retrain for modern office systems.
The course is designed for those wanting to run
the admin side of their own business, work in an
administration role, or upskill. While covering
computer applications like Microsoft Word, Excel
and Publisher, it includes business report writing,
communication skills and creating business
documents.
Vision College’s self-paced course allows students to
work through a series of computer-based skills with
tutor support, at times that suit their lifestyle. “Classes
are held during normal working hours, but we can be
flexible with hours that best suit our student’s lifestyle.”
says Gary Taylor, Vision College Campus Manager.
“So, the learning is delivered by way of a workbook,
along with organised tutorials where tutors are on
hand to offer one-on-one tuition when required. While
some theory is included, the course is very practical
and students are at a computer from the first lesson.”
Added Taylor.
This course is available for domestic students aged
16+.
We recommend students bring their own devices to
work from, however, we do have computers available
for students who do not have access to their own.
REAL ESTATE
Living the dream…
56 Purau Port Levy Rd, Purau Valley, Lyttelton Harbour
Price: $799,000
4 bedrooms | 2 bathrooms | 2 living rooms | 2 car garage | Listing Number: 8885
A charming, delightful 1950’s bungalow set
on nearly 1 acre of flat and very productive
land. North facing, sheltered, sunny and
private, this charming home is in excellent
order throughout having been loved and
carefully maintained over the years.
The top level of the house comprises 2
living areas, a large modern farmhouse style
kitchen with plenty of storage, a massive
master bedroom with adjoining bathroom
and a single bedroom currently used as an
office.
The master bedroom opens onto a covered
North facing verandah with a cosy coveredin
area with a day bed, the perfect place to
enjoy the afternoon sun, peace and birdlife
and to while away a few hours. Downstairs,
(externally accessed) are 2 double bedrooms,
bathroom and a kitchenette/dining area so
semi self-contained, perfect for extended
family or teenagers.
This is a rare opportunity to purchase in
the beautiful picturesque Purau Valley and to
obtain a small manageable holding like this is
really one of a kind.
The land is a mixture of lawns, gardens
and the most established and productive
orchard I have ever seen, with many many
fruit trees established vege beds and native
plantings. There is excellent access, a large
double garage, greenhouse and other useful
sheds and most importantly excellent water
supplies.
My vendors are retiring very reluctantly
and have loved every minute of the 10 years
they have spent here.
Purau Bay is approximately 30 minutes’
drive from Christchurch, making it a highly
desirable destination as it is so useable being
close to Christchurch.
Properties in this lovely valley and by
such a safe swimming beach are defying all
the odds and selling fast generally as they
come up very seldom. Excellent swimming,
boating, walking and stunning sunsets on
the hills, quick and easy access to Lyttelton
via the Diamond Harbour ferry (approx. 5
mins), local shops, cafés and bar make this a
fun filled place to visit.
Properties here make an excellent
investment and Purau Bay and valley is a
truly magical place to live.
Myth # 2
You can trust
everything you
read.
Yeah right! There’s a lot of news
available out there, but some sources
are more informed than others.
2 out of 3 readers agree newspapers are
their most trusted source of news and
information*
If you’re going to believe everything
you read, make sure you’re reading a
newspaper.
