Charles “Chuck” Ritz has been selected<br />
to be this years Grand Marshal of<br />
the <strong>Toledo</strong> <strong>Summer</strong> <strong>Fest</strong>ival <strong>2019</strong>.<br />
Chuck is a long time resident of <strong>Toledo</strong>.<br />
He was born in Newport but<br />
raised in North Lincoln County, where<br />
he graduated from Taft High school in<br />
June 1956.<br />
Chuck enlisted in the Air Force in July<br />
1956 and served until Sept 1964. He met<br />
his future wife Terry Keeper whom he<br />
married right as his enlistment was over.<br />
He and his bride moved back to Lincoln<br />
County where he went to work for Georgia<br />
Pacific until his retirement in 1999.<br />
He was a founding member as well<br />
as charter member of Lincoln County<br />
Search & Rescue in the early 1970s. He<br />
also was very involved in Boy scouts as<br />
a Den Leader and Assistant Scout Leader.<br />
Additionally, when Don Deering was<br />
killed in an automobile accident Chuck<br />
took on the role of Scoutmaster. He is<br />
still a Committee Member with <strong>Toledo</strong><br />
Troop 30 as well as on the district commission<br />
for the Yaquina District from<br />
1995- 2005. He is still very active with<br />
Troop 30, he does many events like<br />
the annual rendezvous where he helps<br />
with the buck saw event. With the help<br />
of <strong>Toledo</strong>'s Veterans of Foreign Wars<br />
Post 4227, he has provided opportunities<br />
for scouts to earn their Eagle<br />
Scouts and a place for weekend outings<br />
and camping. Annually with help<br />
from VFW Post 4227, Chuck and Troop<br />
30 place flags on every Veteran grave<br />
at the <strong>Toledo</strong> Cemetery.<br />
Chuck has been an active member<br />
of VFW post 4227 since 2003. He was<br />
Post Commander from 2017-<strong>2019</strong> currently<br />
he is Senior Vice Post Commander.<br />
During his time as Commander he<br />
brought the membership from 31 to<br />
currently 69 members. He initiated<br />
the Junior/Senior high scholarships<br />
for <strong>Toledo</strong>, Eddyville and Lincoln City<br />
as well as awards for Police, Firefighters,<br />
and Teachers. Chuck initiated an<br />
annual Thanksgiving and Christmas<br />
dinner because no Veteran should<br />
be alone for the holidays. He has arranged<br />
funding for multiple Veteran<br />
assistance programs at the local, state,<br />
and national level. Nationally given<br />
hurricane aid, State wide honor flight<br />
which sends a veteran to Washington<br />
DC, and locally a local toy drive, meals<br />
to Veterans in need.<br />
He may have retired in 1999 but that<br />
just gave him more time to be<br />
active in this community.<br />
