When the Hampton Beach Comedy Festival comes to the iconic Ashworth by the Sea, 295 Ocean<br />

Boulevard, from July 25-28, it will be exactly what comedian Jimmy Dunn envisioned when he started<br />

it 10 years ago.<br />

“I just wanted to invite my funniest, nicest friends to come enjoy the ocean, do a show, and have some<br />

laughs,” says Dunn, a Hampton resident who -- since the first festival in 2009 – has starred in a CBS<br />

sitcom, appeared on Letterman, Conan, and Judd Apatow’s Netflix Series Love, and is currently working<br />

as a writer on the DIRECTV series Loudermilk. “All of the comedians are funny and they’re also fun to<br />

hang out with. Some of them come up to go swimming in the afternoon, and then after most shows we<br />

go to the arcade. Then at the shows, I get to see a lot of friends from around town, and the Ashworth<br />

is the perfect host. It’s a beautiful place, but also comfortable and very welcoming. People are really nice<br />

here, and it reminds me of when I was a kid, parking cars out front.” (As a teenager, he was a valet.)<br />

Among the new faces to join the festival this year is Boston legend Kenny Rogerson, whose industry<br />

credits include FX’s Rescue Me, Letterman, and the documentary When Stand-up Stood Out.<br />

The festival is produced by Scamps Comedy, a company headed by fellow comedian Dave Rattigan.<br />

Dunn hosts every show, which features at least six other comedians. In addition to the lineups, highprofile<br />

friends such as Juston McKinney often drop in for unannounced guest sets.<br />

“The audiences are always laid back and lots of fun, and there are always a lot of folks who come<br />

every year, sometimes to multiple shows,” Rattigan says. “I get calls and emails from comedians and<br />

agents from all over the country, but this is a different kind of comedy festival. There are no contests<br />

and nobody comes here to get a TV deal. We’re here for our audience, and maybe to stop at Jimmy’s<br />

for a steak.”<br />

Showtime is at 8 p.m. each night, and tickets are $20, available at HamptonBeachComedy/Weebly.<br />

838-3006. Tickets will also be sold beginning at 7 p.m. at the door (cash only) on show nights.<br />

Along with Rogerson, newcomers this year include radio personality/actor Chris Zito (mornings on<br />

Mix 93-1 and notably in HBO’s Clear History), popular club comics Chris D. and Andrew Della Volpe,<br />

and newcomer Quin Nehr, who is still in high school. Also, Karen Morgan (who works nationally in<br />

theaters) will make her return after a multiple-year absence.<br />

They’ll join old favorites including Kelly MacFarland, Will Noonan (Improper Bostonian’s “Best<br />

Comedian,” and featured on New England Honda commercials), Mark Riley, Tony V., Dan Boulger,<br />

Lamont Price (named “Best of Boston” by Boston Magazine) and several more, including many with<br />

ties to the New Hampshire seacoast. That batch includes national touring act Jim McCue (Hampton),<br />

Massachusetts’ Funniest Person Carolyn Riley (Newmarket), Steve Scarfo (Raymond), and from<br />

Massachusetts Jeff Koen (Newburyport), Paul Gilligan (Ipswich) and L.A. resident/Ipswich native TV<br />

writer and producer Courtney Cronin.<br />
