Dear Parents,
As we are about to break up for the summer we say goodbye to a number of colleagues who are
moving on to pastures new and I wish them all the best for the future in their new roles. A special
mention must go to Mrs Elisabeth Wall who is retiring from teaching MFL after 29 years of service
to our community and to Mrs Carole Beagle who has also worked at CtK for 29 years ensuring
that the school is kept clean and safe for our students. They have both worked extremely hard to
support the needs of our students and I wish a long and happy retirement to them both. I am
looking forward to welcoming some new colleagues in September and I hope that they will have
a very successful career here at CtK.
May I remind you that the new term will begin on Wednesday 4th September for Year 7 and the
Sixth Form, all other students will start on Thursday 5th.
Thank you for all your support this year. I hope that you have a very happy summer break and I
look forward to seeing you all in September.
ICE Students reach Boccia Finals!
Well done to the students from ICE who qualified for the School Games Finals in Boccia
after beating other secondary schools in the Gedling area. The students played extremely well in
the finals at NTU Clifton Campus and managed to come third in their group. They did CTK proud,
well done to them all!

Year 8 Art Academy Trip
On Wednesday 10 th July our Year 8 Art Academy took a trip to the Yorkshire Sculpture Park (YSP).
We had an inspiring guided tour in the morning from one of the resident artists at the park. She
shared her knowledge and gave the students lots of opportunities to draw and make. Then, after
a sunny picnic lunch, the students demonstrated fantastic team work skills whilst creating their
own group sculptures. The results were brilliant. As always the CTK students were praised by the
YSP staff on their creativity as well as their behaviour and conduct whilst at the park. A thoroughly
enjoyable day was had by all!!!!

Easter Liturgy
On return from the Easter break, we all started the next term with a
whole school celebration at Good Shepherd Church to celebrate
Easter. It was a great celebration all about turning over a new leaf,
starting a fresh and moving forward with new values and attitudes.
The Chaplaincy Team spoke about how forgiveness is the key to this
and when we forgive ourselves and others, we live our lives with a
greater sense of happiness. The Chaplaincy Team led this liturgy and
explained their message through the Bible, freeze
frames and prayers. The highlight for the students
was when a paper mashie Easter egg in their
House colours was destroyed and broken.
On this egg, there were certain words that
prevented us from forgiving others. This
shows that Jesus overcame all and came to
save us all.
Family ‘Pub’ Night
To help us raise money for the Sixth Form students
going to Lourdes, we prepared and ran our annual
Family ‘Pub’ Night, where fish and chips and a quiz
are provided at Christ the King. This fundraiser
always brings fun and joy to the many families and
friends that attend. Not only did the Sixth Formers
set everything up and serve everyone tea, they also
led from the front and planned and delivered the
quiz, with Bryce Bardwell and Kieran Bottoms being
our resident quizmasters. We had a huge raffle
take place with great prizes from Nottingham
Forest, Trent Bridge, Bohn’s Burgers, Travellers Rest
and a huge hamper which was donated by Boots.
We are so grateful to all of these companies for
helping us in our efforts. All the Sixth Formers
deserve full credit, they came early to help, they
kept on top form throughout the night and then
put the school back together during the clean-up.
They are a credit to the school and to their families
who are supporting them and sending them to
Lourdes. The night was a huge success with lots of
money being raised and lots of people smiling and
having a great time.

Lourdes Leg Wax
In the run up to the Diocesan Lourdes Pilgrimage, we had one final
fundraising opportunity at Christ the King, in the form of a leg wax!
This took place during our Year 6 transition day, so the young
people coming up to Christ the King in September could get a real
feel of how we fundraise and what we are all about at CtK! Each
form group had to raise £15 and this meant that one strip was
stripped from our legs. Our Sixth Form students also got involved by
either pulling the strip, or getting waxed themselves, and no
member of staff that visited to support was safe! A big thank you to
Mr Jorgensen who willingly volunteered to help after the
students cheered him on to take part. A great deal of money
was raised and this has been greatly appreciated by our
students who go to Lourdes on Friday 12 th July.
This is the highest number of students that Christ the King has taken to Lourdes for a long, long
time. They are a fantastic group who show care, love and support to each other and, most
importantly, smile every day! We look forward in the next newsletter to hearing news of their
Lourdes visit.

PE NEWS
Year 10 Footballers make history!
The Year 10 Football Team completed
a brilliant and successful season,
winning the South Notts Cup on
Monday 24 th June.
Throughout the season the team
performed really well, putting in
confident performances against Newark
Academy, The Minster School and
National Academy without conceding a
goal.
The semi-final against Redhill was up
next and CTK started the game on the
front foot and raced into an early 2-0
lead. It was a well-controlled first half
display and the team was unlucky not to
go in at half time with a bigger lead with
a goal disallowed and hitting the post as
the half drew to a close.
Redhill came out fighting in the second half and pulled a goal back with 20 minutes to go. The
lads showed tremendous character
and fighting spirit to battle
through the pressure and were
rewarded with a counter attacking
goal in injury time to seal a 3-1 win
and place in the final.
Carlton Le Willows awaited in the
final at Highfield Sports Complex.
It was extremely tight and tense
game throughout. Both teams had
decent spells of possession but
excellent defensive displays from
both teams meant that scoring
chances were few and far between.
After an even contest, both teams
played out an entertaining 0-0
draw eventually going to penalties.

Christ the King lost the toss and were to take their penalties second. Carlton Le Willows went up
first and missed to intensify the drama. Lewis Bottoms stepped up and sent the keeper the wrong
way to give CTK a 1-0 lead in the shootout. More drama immediately followed with a goalkeeper
swap due to severe cramp to Gianni Musson meant Harvey Fisher was reinstated in goal for the
rest of the shootout. He was about to make a huge impact with a crucial save and with Tom
Rowlands stepping up and placing his penalty into the corner of the goal, CTK found themselves
with a 2-0 lead. Carlton Le Willows missed their third penalty meaning Nico Cohen could win the
Cup for CTK if he scored from the spot. Up he stepped and hit his penalty into the roof of the net
with too much pace for the goalkeeper to have a chance to save. CTK celebrated wildly to win the
South Notts Cup.
Firstly, I would like to thank all the students involved this season. They have shown incredible
character this year along with commitment and a desire to succeed. It has been a pleasure to
manage this team. Well done lads! Also a huge thank you to members of staff who gave up their
free time to come and support the team in the final. It gave the boys a massive boost and they
really appreciated the support during the game.
Looking forward to another successful season in Year 11.
THE WONDERFUL WORLD OF WORK!
On Monday 24 th June, our year 10 students began their Work Experience
Week (WEW).
This compulsory activity for all students is designed to give students a taste
of what it’s like to do a job rather than learn and study in school. Placements
are found either by the students themselves or online with help from Ms
Southgate and Mr Pringle, with Ms Mansell, the year 10 Director of Learning,
taking a keen interest in where the students worked and how they fared.
The range of sectors in which students were placed was wonderfully varied –
they included the Health Service, schools and day nurseries, hospitality,
retail, architecture, vets and doctors’ surgeries, IT and many more.
The feedback the school received about students was invariably very positive
– here are some examples:
xxx was enthusiastic from the moment she walked through the door and joined in with a wide
variety of daily tasks and activities. She has a natural ability
to engage with a diverse range of people and has been a
credit to herself and her school.
Your work experience candidate, xxx has just completed his
weeks work experience with our company and we must say
that he performed to a commendable level as we would
expect from any other employee. His work ethic,
punctuality and engagement was perfect for the entire
week. He applied himself to listening, learning and
developing a basic knowledge of online marketing.
xxx has been undertaking his work placement this week with us and I would just like to say
what a fantastic young lad he is. He came on his first day very nervous and hardly saying
a word to today having a laugh and a joke with us all about how many cups of tea he has
with 2 sugars! Thanks for sending a great student out to us, he is a credit to your school.
In 2020 our new cohort of year 10 students will again be participating in their WEW. Wise
students would think now about what type of placement they might like and start asking
potential employers if they would be willing to offer a placement.
175 th Year of the Cathedral in Nottingham
On Tuesday 11 th June at Saint Barnabas Cathedral in Nottingham, two of our students, Ania
Jackowska (Y12) and Ben Jackowski (Y7), attended a Mass celebrated by Cardinal Vincent Nichols
to celebrate the 175 th Year of the Cathedral in
Nottingham. As part of this schools and
guests from across the Diocese attended this
celebration. It was a wonderful way to
commemorate a beautiful and sacred
building. On arrival, there were lots of familiar
faces and lots of important figures were
invited, such as the Knights and Dames of the
Holy Sepulchre, The Lord Lieutenant and Lady
Peace were among some of the guests there. It
was a beautiful celebration with so many known
faces and a massive attendance. We all finished
our celebration in the Albert Hall where the
joyous occasions continued. It was a truly
worthy celebration of our Cathedral.
Theatre Cake
Olivia Brogan in Year 7 made this wonderful gluten-free
Globe Theatre cake as part of her Macbeth homework
project – her English class thought it was a 5 star effort!
I wonder if it tasted as yummy as it looks!!

Year 10 Briars Trip
In May Christ the King took 49
students from Year 10 to The
Briars Catholic Youth Retreat
Centre. This was a great chance
for them to enjoy themselves and
explore their faith during a
stressful period of time for them.
They didn’t quite know what to
expect, all we had told them was
they were going to have a week of
questioning and looking deeper
into their faith, whilst also having
the most amazing week of their
life full of fun, great memories and hopefully a better relationship with God. We arrived and were
greeted very kindly by The Briars Team who made everyone feel welcomed and happy before we
went in. This would be a sign of things
to come as the week was a neverending
time of joy. From start to finish
the smiles never left the young
people’s faces, whether it was the
team building games at the start of
the week or the talent show/disco at
the end of the week. It was a fun filled
journey and a great time to relax.
Overall, the retreat met our aims and
goals that we wanted to see. We
wanted the young people to feel
better about being themselves and be
more comfortable in their own skin. By
the end of the week there was not a
single person leaving The Briars without a
massive smile on their face. They left with
things every chaplain could only dream of,
they left feeling 100 times happier, they
left with a renewed faith in Jesus and last,
but not least, new friendships and
connections with people they would never
have thought of having at CtK. The young
people were a credit to the school and
their families, everyone on that retreat
deserves all the thanks and praise. What a
week!
