Free Meal Monday Update
Since its launch at the start of the year, we've been
pleased to see a steady increase in the number of
people attending our free monthly lunch club.
Thanks to a group of dedicated volunteers, we have
been able to feed up to 30 people at each session.
The food used to create the meals comes from
food donated to the community fridge along with
produce grown on the ESCAPE allotment project
when it is in season.
From August onwards we will be changing the
times of the lunch from 11am - 1pm to 12noon -
2pm to allow more people to be able to attend and
to avoid booking clashes.
We hope to see more new faces in the coming
months, there is no need to book, just turn up.
Food will be served on a first come, first served
basis, so arrive early to avoid disappointment!
Pot of Gold : Swaffham Shanty Crew
We apologise, for wrongly describing Swaffham
Shanty Crew, as 'Swaffham Shantymen' in Swaffham
Arts' June article. There are in fact two women in
the crew.
West Acre Village Fete
Thank you to everyone who came along to the
West Acre Village fete on 15th June to enjoy playing
games or just relaxing to the music with something
to eat and drink. We would like to thank all of the
local businesses who generously donated raffle
prizes and to everyone who contributed towards
the tombola, cake stall, books and bric-a-brac
which, along with all the games play an important
part of the day. Most of all a big thank you to
Garlinda for allowing us to use her garden again
and all the volunteers who gave up their own time
to make the day happen and help raise £3653 for
the West Acre Village Hall.
New Swaffham Blog Launched
Fed up with bad news and negative news on the
national news bulletins? So am I. That is why I have
set up a blog: www.letthegoodnewsroll.co.uk to
promote only good news and good deeds-the sort of
things that you don't normally hear about, but should
get to hear about. Please have a look at the website.
If you have a good news story or a good deeds story I
would love to hear from you. My contact details can
be found on the website. Thank you.
The Nicholas Hamond Academy
Proud show of support for Armed Forces
Day, TNHA students attended school in
their uniforms including Army & RAF
Cadets, Guides, Scouts & St. Johns Ambulance.
We welcomed a serving member of the military
as our special guest who spoke about his various
experiences in the Army. Students had the chance
to ask questions and stood for a ‘civilian salute’. The
Mayor, Deputy Mayor & governors also attended as
part of the celebrations.
Furthering our support for the military and their
families, we are proud to have signed the Armed
Forces Covenant, especially with our local links
to RAF Marham. A quote from the covenant is a
follows: “Families also play a vital role in supporting
the operational effectiveness of our Armed Forces.
In return, the whole nation has a moral obligation to
the members of the Naval Service, the Army and the
Royal Air Force, together with their families”. These
are sentiments to which we certainly subscribe at
TNHA.
We are also keen to further links with all members
of our local community. The sound of live music and
the aroma of sausages on the BBQ marked National
Care Home Day at Meadow House in Swaffham.
Students were delighted to accept an invitation to
talk to residents and to view their various art exhibits
amongst which was a stunning sensory tree and
some amazing seaside scenes. We look forward
to extending our links further with Meadow House
particularly through our Art and Drama Programmes.
7
Meanwhile back at school some rather interesting
experiences were in process. Our more curious
scientists were testing the ‘stretchiness’ of slime,
fruit batteries, flame testing and dissolvable pigments
in Skittles, during this exciting Year 8 Science project.
The experiments were researched, designed, planned
and eventually tested, by the students themselves
designed to prove or disprove their hypothesis.
Continuing the theme of investigation – our Food
Technology students visited Elveden Estate, which
is one of the largest
single farm units in
lowland Britain. The
trip was designed to
show the route from
‘farm to our table’ and
students were able
see first-hand some
of the processes and
machinery used on
this huge estate comprising of 22,500 acres.
Our monthly news concludes with a report on
our annual sports day (held over two days). The
weather was kind and saw students representing
their ‘college’ in a variety of sports. On the first day
students competed in traditional field events such as
Javelin, Shot, Discus, Long
Jump, High Jump and Triple
Jump. However, during the
second day all students
and teachers took part in
events ranging from the
Principal’s Challenge, tug
of war, ‘wellie wanging’,
sports quizzes and penalty
shoot-outs. The event
culminated with 200m &
100m races and students
had a chance to cheer on
our ‘fitter’ members of staff
taking part in their own relay! Congratulations to
Falcons College who were the overall winners this
year!

Sacred Heart School
Less Forest School more Duke of Edinburgh Award!
The rain fell, the wind blew but in true British fashion
we rose to the occasion and had a splendid day.
The children enjoyed making flower kebabs,
climbing the tower to admire the rain soaked view,
splashing in puddles and jumping in the mud. We
tried our hand at Hapa-Zome (leaf bashing) to make
wonderful transient art work before retreating
indoors to create green men out of clay. We finished
by pond dipping and many of the children got to
hold a newt.
The trip of the first term was spending a day at the
Sainsbury’s centre in Norwich, where we looked at
the Brian Clark exhibition. The day was incredibly
useful for the GCSE art students where we collected
ideas and inspirations from his work to bring back
and into our own work.
To raise money for the Drama and Music department,
with the amazing help of Miss Williams and Mrs
Pickard we organised a series of movie nights for
everyone in the school. The evenings were a hit and
everyone who came seemed to enjoy themselves,
with the film, pizza and ice cream. It was lovely to
spend some time with our classmates outside of
school and make some memories.
Year 11 Leavers Sacred Heart School Report
The year kicked off with house music which although
was challenging at times was very fun and rewarding
by the end, performing in front of the whole school,
parents and judges. Well done and thank you to our
amazing house captains for all of your hard work.
Every year the Christmas Bazaar is a highlight and
this year was no exception. However, this sadly
would be our last and instead of working as a whole
form, we worked in our Houses to create our house
tombola stalls to raise money for the school.
Also as a Year 11 tradition we spent many break
times organising the annual Christmas Party that
included snacks, music, and games and of course
the best part was the dressing up. Everyone came
together to have an afternoon of fun that we hope
everyone enjoyed and will remember for many
years to come.
Recurring key highlights of the year were the House
Sports Events. Everyone participated in basketball,
hockey, football and netball. I personally believe
these events show the true passion and love this
school has with everyone getting involved and
working as a team, I think we will all really miss this
Overall, it has been an incredible year with lots of
laughter and fun and I truly believe none of us will
ever forget the amazing experiences we have had at
Sacred Heart School.
What a wonderful day, we were not put off by a little drizzle
to start with and cheering when the sun came out for us.
We would like to thank everyone who supported our
fete. We had some lovely stallholders, petting pony
which was adored, large tractor and a limo to look in
and sit in, free archery to try, the bbq, cake, whippy
nicks ice cream, and refreshments were enjoyed
sitting in the sun and everyone was serenaded by
the wonderful Jo of Jo Manning Music (can be seen
time. The Meeting Place isn't just for people who
go to church, it's there because of the great need
to provide a place to chat, sit quietly, play board
games etc. Perhaps you're new to the area? If so
why not drop in and see us. You can be sure of a
warm welcome.
Each session has a themed ‘Sharing Circle’;
illustrated and acted stories from the Bible;
children’s discussions; songs; prayers; and birthday
celebrations.
The next meeting will be in church at 10.00am on
21st September. All are welcome.
Mothers’ Union
The Swaffham branch of the Mothers’ Union usually
meets on the 2nd Thursday of the month. Our next
meeting will be on Thursday 8th August and is
entitled, “Over to you”, an opportunity to discuss the
latest Mothers’ Union projects and ways we can be
involved. Enquiries to Julia on 720041
Gift Day – St Peter And St Paul
On Saturday 3rd August the parish church will be
holding its 2019 Gift Day. Why? Well, the running
of our parish church is very costly and although
many people in the regular congregation are
already giving generously, this Gift Day provides
an occasion for others to contribute; those who
value the church ‘being there’ for them at times of
sadness, and times of joy, for instance. A Gift Day
is therefore an opportunity to make a donation
towards this. Special envelopes will be available in
church nearer the time, and may be brought back
into church at any time, especially during the day
on 3rd August. Thank you in anticipation.
PS. Sadly the ‘Table-top Sale’ mentioned last month
is unlikely to happen, but if there is a decision to
go ahead, a notice will be in evidence on the day!
Churches Together In Swaffham and District
At our meeting held on the 10th July 2019 we
welcomed some new members and said a sad
farewell to Fr. Gordon Williams, our current Chair,
who is retiring in September.
Items discussed - The Christian Aid Street and
envelope collection amounted to £485.15 and the
collectors were thanked for their hard work.
This year the venue and title of the Carol Concert
have changed - it will be a Festival of Carols and
will be held in the Parish Church on Thursday 12th
December. The Dereham Salvation Army Band
have been asked to play again.
The Foodbank is seeing increasing numbers and
Dereham Foodbank is having to use reserve stock
to meet with demand.
We reviewed the Lent Reflections and it was
thought that the content of this years booklet was
too detailed and too complex. the Good Friday Act
of Witness was well attended but this year it was
very noisy at the Buttercross due to road works
and the sound system had to work off batteries
as the socket had been covered over during the
renovations.
We held our first ever Churches Together Picnic
in June. Unfortunately, it was the wettest, coldest
day but it was well attended and everyone enjoyed
it. Churches Together are Knitting Angels which
will be given out to Care Homes and Hospitals at
Christmas. A group of keen knitters are meeting
in the Methodist Church to produce as many as
possible.
Our next meeting will be on the 11th September
when we hope to welcome Rev’d Jacqui Horton, the
new Methodist Minister and Fr. Mark Hackerson,
the new Catholic Priest.

Merle Boddy Centre
At the end of June I was invited to the
A.G.M of Swaffham Young Farmers. The
Merle Boddy was chosen as their charity
of the year and for this we were very
grateful. I just wanted to share with you what a well
run meeting it was, the enthusiasm in the room for
the committee jobs was enjoyable to encounter.
From the old committee going out, to the new
one taking over, the room was buzzing for the year
to come. We at the Merle Boddy wish all the new
committee a great time in all the activities for the
year to come.
This lovely lady celebrated her birthday in style,
modelling a very fetching birthday hat and a radiant
smile that speaks volumes.
We would like to thank Linda, Ben and Laura for all
your help in making the bingo such a success and of
course to all you fantastic bingo experts who attended
the event. You made my job of calling a real pleasure,
to tell you I was nervous just doesn't come close to
how I felt. Thank you to everyone who gave us such
wonderful prizes, the wheelbarrow was the star of
the show. The grand total of £901.54 was made and
we are so grateful for all your support.
My girls have gotten inventive again and this is the
result, some beautiful button bowls. They took a bit
of patience from their creators, but what a lovely
item to take home.
Our very own Jo Anthony has given her and her
husband Alan a challenge to do, the Race to the
Stones ultra marathon, from the Chilterns to the
Avebury Stones, a distance of 61 miles following the
historical Ridgeway Walk across the north Wessex
Downs. If you would like to sponsor Jo please give
us a ring on 01760 724527. We wish them both a
speedy and a blister free walk.
We are again putting on an afternoon tea on Sunday
4th August, the cost is £6 per head and includes lots
of cream scones and cake to enjoy. It will start at 3pm
and end at 5pm, please book as space limited 01760-
We are holding another quiz night at the Conservative
Club on 13th September at 7pm. Open to teams of
up to 6 people with quiz master Stan Sole, so brains
at the ready, looking forward to seeing you there.
35 years and still going strong,
Swaffham and District Lions
celebrated this significant
milestone with a highly successful
dinner and dance at Knights Hill Barn, King's Lynn, on
Saturday night. Other Lions from Dereham and King's
Lynn and Lionesses from Swaffham, helped mark
the occasion, at which the Vice District Governor
Ujjal Kular and Swaffham Town Mayor Councillor Jill
Skinner, congratulated Swaffham Lions on their past
successes and looked forward to their continuing
commitment to service in the community. The Vice
District Governor also delivered warm congratulations
from the Lions International President Gudrun
Yngvadottir to the club and presented John Collins,
Swaffham Lions President with a commemorative
pin. Music for the night was provided by local band
residents and staff. Swaffham & District Lions
Swaffham Lions held their Presidents Change Over
lunch at the Crown public house in Munford. The
twenty seven guests enjoyed a three course meal,
before John Collins, who will be President during the
thirty sixth year of Swaffham Lions, outlined his plan
Swaffham Lions were invited to an Open Day at
Meadow House Care Home to see the facilities. With
thirty eight rooms and seventy two staff, the residents
of all ages who mainly suffer from MS, are well cared
for. The Open Day included a display of the crafts
that had been made by the residents, BBQ, cakes
and drinks. The music was provided by Chris Wilson
who had the residents rocking in their wheel chairs.
It was uplifting to see so much joy being shared by
for the coming year.
Swaffham Lions had a busy weekend attending three
fetes, Swaffham Infant School, Necton Festival and
Swaffham Cottage Hospital. The well supported
Infant School Fete, where the young people, as well
as parents and grandparents, enjoyed the Lions Pig
Race game with lots shouting their pig to the finish
line. The Swaffham Lion made an appearance much
to the delight of young and old. At Necton the Lions
displayed their Message in a Bottle and handed out
free bottles to the visitors. On Sunday the Pig Race
was at the Cottage Hospital entertaining the staff and
visitors.
Beachamwell WI
At our July meeting, Beachamwell
WI welcomed Poppy Rose, who
described herself as a “transgender
lesbian poet all rolled into one”, and what an
interesting evening she gave us. Between readings
of her striking poems, Poppy told us about her life.
Born a male but from her earliest memories sure
that she was by nature female, she was forced by
prejudice and bigotry to live a lie. It was not until
she was in her fifties, that she felt able to make the
transition which has at last brought the peace and
happiness she craved. Unflinching in her honesty,
Poppy gave us an evening which was both moving
and life-affirming. The WI’s mission is not just
social but educational, and Poppy gave us a whole
new perspective on an issue, which has become
more current in recent years as times (at last) are
changing.
In complete contrast, our August speaker is a
forensic scientist, Brian Heard, whose talk is
entitled “In search of the smoking gun”. Visitors,
those who are not thinking of joining our WI, are
most welcome to join us in Beachamwell Village
Hall at 7.30pm on August 1st at a charge of £3.50.
Prospective new members are always welcome to
come along to one meeting and look us over, free of
charge. Just turn up on the night or contact Helen
(01366 328589).
Swaffham WI
At our last meeting, held at the
newly refurbished Methodist
Church on 3rd.July at 7.30pm, we
had an extremely interesting talk by Bill Muir. This
was on his past experiences in taking part in various
quizzes. These ranged from, some time ago, on
Radio, then on Television's University Challenge,
then more recently on Mastermind. Bill informed
us of how these competitions were arranged &
participants chosen, all quite complex! but he had
obviously enjoyed it all & had very good results.
Our next meeting, on Wednesday 7th.August
7.30pm will be an annual 'Birthday Party' with food
& soft drinks plus entertainment by two members of
'Three's Company' group Leah & Irma with poetry,
prose & song. We would love to see visitors so do
come along if you wish to see if the W.I. interests
you. We also arrange various outings e.g. Theatre
visits, Coach trips, Walks plus group activities 'Knit
& Natter', 'Card Making', 'Ten-Pin Bowling' etc.
What a lovely time we had with
Denise Treissman, trying out our
skills at screen printing cards and
fabric which we took home with us. Denise our
speaker for the July Meeting gave us a talk about
her subject and a demonstration which was so
interesting and creative. This was followed by a
welcome cup of tea and a biscuit. Also time for a
nice chat.
Competition - A dried flower picture was won by
Dad’s Army Day
Saturday 3rd August 10am to 3pm
Attenshun! Captain Mannering and his Walmingtonon-Sea
platoon will be on parade in Swaffham on
Saturday 3rd August.
All the familiar faces will be there with Jones’
Van and, rumour has it, Mr Churchill may pay a
visit. There will be live music from Chrissie and
John Drury of Timescape and George Cushing
with his Street Organ to help to recreate the 40s
atmosphere. Swaffham will be stepping back to the
40s for the day so why not join in and come along
dressed for the era? This year we are very pleased
to be able to offer children a free chair ride, a real
old fashioned thrill!”
Several military charities will be there on the day
including SSAFA, Scotties Little Soldiers and Help
for Heroes. And of course all our regular Swaffham
Market attractions with stalls both on the Market
Place and in the Assembly Rooms and the weekly
auction at 11am. A great day to see Swaffham at
it’s best.
we want to ask for your suggestions, would you like
more comedy, drama or documentaries?
You can send in suggestions to swaffhamnewsletter@
CELEBRATING
President’s Corner
Swaffham 5
If I can start at the end
of the month and work
backwards this month
for a change. Swaffham
Rotary is now in its New
Year 2019/20, starting
on July 1st and with that
there is a “Changing of the
Guard”. Malcolm Whittley
has finally completed his
year and handed over the
Chain of Office to me as
President of the Club. It was
Malcolm’s 3rd time and it will be my second time. The
first time was 10 years ago so I hope I can remember
the mistakes I made and hope I don’t repeat them! The
Handover meal was held at Swaffham Golf Club with
over 55 people attending and enjoying a thoroughly
excellent meal.
I’d like to take this opportunity to thank Malcolm for
all his tireless work for the Club and ultimately for the
good of Swaffham and District, by supporting various
societies and organisations such as Escape, Merle Body
Centre, Nicholas Hamond Academy & Litcham High
School to name just a few.
The Club visited the RSPCA centre at East Winch
during June and were shown around these fabulous
facilities by the Centre’s Manager Alison Clarke. It was
amazing the depth
and breath of the
rehabilitation work
the Centre gets
involved in. Besides
the “normal” seals,
adults & pups
and hedgehogs
(hedgehogs being
the number 1 category) they handle all varieties of birds
and bats, most of which are handed in by the public.
The most “exciting” visitor that was handed into the
Centre , to date, ( and this is not a competition) has
been a Black Mamba presented in a cardboard box tied
up with a piece of string. Mambas are normally nicked
named “3 Steps” because that’s how many you’ll be
able to take once they have bitten you , so they say.
This is not from personal experience; I have been quite
willing to take someone’s word for it!
One of the most pleasant events of the Rotary years
was towards the end of the month with the annual
Strawberry Tea party, this year held in the Assembly
Rooms. We endeavour to reach out to as many elderly
people as we can in the local community, living in
sheltered housing or otherwise, and treat them to
cakes & sandwiches, strawberries & cream, and this
year, a lively singer who took us through the charts and
occasionally down memory lane! There is no entry fee
YEARS
18
and it was pleasing to see a well-attended do with over
65 people packing out the room.
To keep with the culinary theme, The Presidents’ wives,
Jenny Ward & Sue Whittley were at hand to hand out the
certificates & aprons to the winners of the Young Chefs
Awards at the Nicholas
Hamond Academy. Some
great cooking and ideas
were on show and they
were worthy finalists.
Rotary has been pleased
to support the Town
Museum as part of Rotary
In Swaffham’s 50th
celebrations. Sue Gattuso,
from the Museum, the
last group of over 20
people around the town pointing out the history and
associated stories. The previous 2 events hadn’t been
blessed by the weather or attendance, so everyone was
glad that we ended on a high note. Now people have
got to know perhaps it is something we can extended
into next year.
The Capture Swaffham photographic challenge
continues to be well supported by everyone with some
stunning entries being entered. The Challenge now is
to capture the summer events and the Town in bloom.
It would be nice to capture all the stall holders on the
market and owners of the shops, standing proudly
outside their premises – any takers?!
A Fond Farewell to Don Saunders
moved nearly seamlessly into employment with Family
Action working in local schools and organising family
activities and trips.
When funding dried up for my work with Family Action
I left Swaffham, only briefly, to work in the Children’s
Centre in Watton. Although the work in Watton and
its surrounding villages was hugely enjoyable and
rewarding the funding once again was withdrawn, but
for me the timing couldn’t have been better. The Iceni
Partnership manager, at that time and now Chairman,
Dennis Tallon was stepping down and I was offered
an interview to fill the considerable boots that he had
filled. I didn’t have to think twice, I was coming back
home and with the job I’d always dreamt of.
The time has come to say a fond farewell to
Don after eight years at the helm of the Iceni
Partnership, during which time he has seen budget
cuts by central and local authorities. This has
led Don to strengthen his team to help the local
community with advice and help, as well as running
the community fridge and freezer scheme which
has saved tons of food going to waste.
Don’s legacy will be how the Community Centre
has become the hub for the community with all the
tenants working as a team to give local people the
support they require. He has also built up a rapport
with other local groups as well as local and district
councils who often seek his advice and support for
local initiatives.
We wish Don a happy well deserved retirement
with his family, but knowing Don I don’t think it will
be a pipe and slippers time.
It was 8 ‘o’ clock on January 2nd 2002 when I arrived
"
"
in Swaffham for my first day as Education Manager
at the Ecotech Discovery Centre, little did I know
that Swaffham and its residents would make such
a strong impression on me that I’d still be here over
seventeen years later.
In those days I lived in Wymondham and faced a 25
mile bike ride to work combined with having to tread
the 305 steps to the top of the wind turbine and then
back down again, several times a day, I was somewhat
fitter and certainly slimmer than I am nowadays.
My time working at Ecotech was curtailed by closure,
a re-opening under the management of Business
Link and then finally another re-organisation
under new management. Fortunately prior to my
Ecotech employment coming to an end I’d worked
in partnership with Family Action, then FWA (Family
Welfare Association), and the Iceni Partnership. This
partnership work certainly worked to my advantage as I
20
It might have been an ‘April Fool’ joke, but my first day
as Manager of the Iceni Partnership was the 1st April
2011 and I was overwhelmed with information and
do’s and don’ts and there were a few doubts in my
mind, even in those early days, if I was really up to the
job. In true Swaffham style I was supported, nurtured
and encouraged and the confidence to build upon the
brilliant work of previous managers and directors began
to grow. Over the past eight years the Iceni Partnership
has grown and expanded but it has always stuck to its
original reasons for its existence, working for and with
the community.
"
No one person can achieve what the Iceni
Partnership has achieved over the past eight
years and this success has been seen the
efforts of a team of full and part-time Iceni
employees buying into the ethos of a community
organisation providing and offering a one-stopshop
approach. The relationships between other
Swaffham organisations, over the past eight years,
have improved to the point where, egos and personal
interests have been forgotten and everyone agrees
the Town is truly pulling together to improve the life
chances and environment for all its residents.

The Community Centre is now recognised, locally and
nationally, as an example of a true ‘Community Hub’
which houses support organisations, either as residents
or on a drop-in basis. Advice and support can be sought
on everything from childcare, pension rights, debt
advice, substance abuse, etc, etc.
The Iceni Partnership has to operate as a business,
not to make huge profits but to provide a sustainable
income for its community support activities and to
maintain both the Community Centre and Assembly
Rooms in a condition that Swaffham can be proud of.
Managing a successful business is not an easy task,
especially for someone who’s not a natural business
man but the hardwork to master Sage accounts,
reconcile bank statements and manage cashflows has
all been worthwhile when you see the difference the
Iceni Partnership has made to ordinary people’s lives.
The last eight years have been the most enjoyable
of my working life, hardwork certainly, rewarding
definitely and if I’m totally honest I would love to carry
on but the body is giving out and deep down I know it’s
time to step aside and let someone else take over the
Partnership reins.
After the end of July I’ll no longer be the Manager of the
Iceni Partnership but you can rest assured I won’t be a
stranger to Swaffham, I’ve made too many friends to
even think about cycling away into the sunset.
Don Saunders
A Warm Welcome to Claire Cotterill
Everyone at the
Iceni Partnership wish to extend
a warm welcome to
Claire, as are new Iceni
Partnership Manager,
she will be following in
the footsteps of Dennis
Tallon and Don Saunders
on a well warn path. We
are sure that Claire will be
following the ethos of the
Partnership of working
and developing the
community as well as managing the Iceni Partnership
assets. She joins a strong team which has been
developed by Don, with the support and direction of
the Board of Directors. Claire, who lives locally with
her family, has been involved in running a Community
Centre as well as large community events. She is a team
player and is very approachable and will be an asset to
the Partnership.
I
am delighted to be given the opportunity to take
over the mantle and legacy Don and his team have
worked so hard to achieve. I am proud to be given
the responsibility of serving the community that I
call home.
"
Our family - my husband and 3 children, moved here 6
years ago and have never looked back. Now, not strictly
a Norfolk girl, I’ve spent the last 40 years as an Essex
girl! Although, recently tracing my family history I have
discovered that my spiritual home place is actually
Heacham - maybe that’s why our family feel so at home
here? - actually, it’s just the lovely warm welcoming
nature of Swaffham! My background has always been
in a customer and service driven environment, for
many years I worked in the telecoms industry as a
Customer Services Manager, then moved in Project
Management when I needed to relocate the business
from London to Scotland. This experience gave me a
great opportunity to run and develop my own bridal
gown and wedding planning business in the heart of
London and Essex. More recently, my time working for
Necton Parish Council looking after the Community
Centre, has ensured my core values of working with
people to enrich their lives and well being is key to the
growth of a community were realised. I am very grateful
to Necton Parish Council for allowing me the freedom
to develop a community engagement programme and
take an active role in developing community events.
"
"
Over the coming months I am keen to work
and learn with the Iceni team to deliver
our goals and objectives in providing award
winning service and enriching lives and
creating initiatives that benefit the whole community.
I am also keen to hear what you think and what you
would like from the Community Centre, so please
come and say hello, tell us your ideas and lets see
where this new chapter takes us.
"
Finally, I’d like to extend my best wishes to Don for a
long and happy retirement. Thank you for all your hard
work and dedication to the Swaffham community and
the Iceni Partnership - you will be greatly missed by all.
The Magpie Centre
It’s All Systems Go For Craft And Country Fair
Visitors to the Magpie Centre, home of West Norfolk
Riding for the Disabled Association, enjoyed the Open
Day on June 23, opened by West Norfolk Mayor Geoff
Hipperson. This year marks the 50th anniversary of
the RDA movement and the day comprised show
jumping, dressage, side saddle and carriage driving
demonstrations, resulting in a profit of £700 for the
Centre.
Next up is the Magpie Centre’s biggest annual event,
the Craft and Country Fair, held in the glorious grounds
of Wallington Hall, PE33 0EP (on A10 just north of
Downham Market). This runs from 10.00 am to 5.00
pm on Sunday, August 18. Tickets, available on the gate
only, are £6.00 each for children and adults, £18.00
per family (two adults plus two children) and Under
5’s FREE. Sorry, but no dogs can be admitted except
service/assistance dogs. Star attractions include a
ridden Heavy Horse Display, Archery, Carriage and
Pony Rides, Falconry and not only Classic Cars and
Bikes, but also Commercial Vehicles and Tractors
dating from yesteryear. Highlight promises to be the
Royal Air Force flypast of its WW2 Lancaster bomber,
during the afternoon, weather permitting.
Craft lovers can expect a hall full of treats as the
indoor arena is packed to capacity with craft stalls of
all kinds, which they can enjoy, accompanied by the
music of a ukulele band, while food and drink stalls
cater to every taste. The day also offers draws for two
incredible ‘money can’t buy’ prizes. All adults paying
£6.00 to enter the event will receive a ticket for the
Grand Prize Draw, whose prize is a Harvard T6 Trial
Flying lesson. This aircraft was used for training pilots
to fly the legendary Spitfire and is a real adrenaline
rush for pilot or non-pilot alike!
For something more sedate, His Grace the Duke of
Rutland has donated a very special prize: a ride for two
people in his 1908 Renault, a private tour of Belvoir
Castle and a picnic in the Castle grounds. Tickets @
£2.50 will be on sale on the day and the draw will take
place at 4.30 pm.
Help with setting up the arena for the Craft Fair on
Saturday August 17 is also required. We need some
sturdy types to unroll the coir matting which enables
wheelchair users to access the craft stalls, so if you,
and maybe a group of friends from your local club/
pub or church can help anytime from 10.00 am to
2.00 pm on Saturday August 17, please call WNRDA
Chairwoman Rosie O’Grady on 01366 500104.
Swaffham History Group
At our last meeting members enjoyed a photo
presentation by our IT guru, Peter Coombes, who
had recently returned from a five week tour of New
Zealand.
This picture shows him with his wife, Sue, under a
waterfall at Milford Sound Fjord, just one of the many
wonders of the natural world that they enjoyed.
After travelling via Hong Kong to Auckland, where
they stayed a few days with relatives, Pete and his
wife undertook a 3,800 mile road journey around
both North and South Islands.
During their stay they visited Thermal Wonderland
at Wai-o-Tapu with its hot springs as well as Rainbow
Springs Nature park; the Royal albatross centre at
Dunedin, an old gold mining town at Arrow Town,
and the famous Pancake Rocks at Punakaiki, as well
as several Maori Heritage sites.
The weather was not always kind, including the
postponement of a whale watching trip, Their final
leg of the journey from South Island back to North
Island was somewhat hampered by the collapse
of a bridge in an earthquake near Te Anau. Pete's
photography was superb and much admired by the
Group.
Our group still welcomes new members. For details
Swaffham Community Hospital LOFs
On Saturday 14th July we held a garden party at the
Hospital. Thanks to all that helped organise this event
and of course those of you who attended and helped
make it a success. Staff and patients joined in to make
it an enjoyable afternoon.
On Saturday 17th August we will have a stall at an
event organised by one of our ex committee members
at her home in Brandon Road.
A future fundraising event for your diary: This time
something new: James Parry, a Norfolk based writer
will talk and discuss about a lady called Emma Turner
who is a well known photographer and naturalist.
It is to take place on Wed 4th Sept in the evening
at the Assembly Rooms. There will be a welcome
drink, cheese and wine, plus pay bar. Tickets will be
available soon through the usual Ceres Bookshop and
“Just Hair”.
On 7th September it will be time again for our Town
street collections. Help is always welcome for this, so
please contact me if you can lend a hand.
On a more formal note, as a charity we held our annual
general meeting on Monday 13th May to formally
adopt last years accounts and a Chairman's report.
The report and minutes are available on request.
Next Coffee morning at the Methodist Church is
Saturday 21st September.
Thanks to Barbara Summerville at Oxborough who
opened her Gardens again this year to the public to
raise funds for the Hospice and also for us.
We also received a cheque from the Town Council
after being one of the two past Mayor's charities in
18/19. The other was the Merle Body Centre.
Our Garden at the Hospital is enjoying good use and
the new plants etc are getting much more established.
As ever we welcome new people to join our small
committee and help us with our activities. If you think
you might be interested, call me for an informal chat.
We continue to receive lovely letters and donations
from past patients and their families. As ever be
assured we put the money to good use.
Swaffham & Litcham Home Hospice
On the 29th April 2019, Clare Wood ran the London
Marathon raising monies by way of sponsorship
for the Home Hospice. Supported by her husband
Richard, she raised £752, this figure being prior to
any Gift Aid that can be claimed. Our thanks to Clare
and to her friends, family and work colleagues who
supported her. She is pictured below with Sarah
Leggett, our Deputy Co-ordinator, shortly after the
presentation to us of the monies raised.
Swaffham Players
Swaffham Players have been relaxing, or at least
catching up with the housework, after their popular
music-hall show “A Little of What you Fancy” in April.
We enjoyed a challenging treasure hunt and slap-up
tea in June. We’re also looking forward to an equally
slap-up BBQ in September, and a quiz when the nights
are drawing in.
But the Muses are hard taskmasters. Rehearsals have
just begun for a drama entitled “Up the Beanstalk
Again”, to be presented at the Swaffham Conservative
Club on October 18th and 19th. It’s an exciting and
challenging show, and we’re looking forward to getting
our teeth into it.
Looking further ahead, next year is our 50th
Anniversary! We’re hoping to put together a special
celebration show. Details are far from finalised at the
moment, but we’d like to encourage past members
to get in touch, possibly to reprise parts from old
shows, or fondly remembered acts and party pieces,
and at the very least to revive old friendships and
connections.
Nicky, our secretary will be very happy to hear from
you on 01760 721568 and, as ever, from anybody
interested in meeting us and joining as a new member.
Swaffham Dementia Café
We have also received just over £1000 from the
proceeds of a cake stall and a mock auction which
were part of the Sheep Fair held in Swaffham
Market Place on the 25th May. Our grateful thanks
to the members of the Wayland Show committee
who were involved.
By the time you read this, the Phoenix Singers
will have held a concert raising monies for us. The
concert took place at the Community Centre on the
12th July. Our thanks to them for supporting us.
As an organisation, we need to raise in the region
of £100k in addition to central funding received,
to enable us to continue to provide the wide range
of services we currently offer and therefore events
and sponsorship from third parties such as those
mentioned above are vitally important to us.
Adrian Adcock, Treasurer
We meet on the first Wednesday of the month
from 10am till midday in the Assembly Rooms. We
provide games, quizzes, activities, sometimes craft
work, sometimes entertainment and visits from
organisations who offer help and support for people
with dementia and their carers and families.
For more information ring Celia Batty on 01362
coffee and biscuits, or occasionally cake! You will be
very welcome.
very informative presentation of how to do home
composting including what containers to keep your
compost in and what to put in your compost. Mary was
definite that home made compost is vastly superior to
anything you can buy in the garden centres and much
better for your plants and vegetables. Mary brought
a number of information leaflets on how to compost
and how composting works. Below are some of the
DO’s and DONT’s for composting materials:
DO’s: Uncooked fruit & veg; grass cuttings; animal
manure with straw; hedge clippings; urine (good
activator); annual weeds; cardboard, glossy paper
from magazines;
DONT’s: Meat and fish scraps; bread; dairy produce;
tins; plastics; citrus peel; raw onion.
Our next meeting is on August 22nd at 2.30pm at Holme
‘Gardener’s Question Time’. So come along with your
questions and join us for an afternoon of horticultural
enjoyment. New members always welcome.
Swaffham Sparklers
Last September the Swaffham Sparklers, members
of the Red Hat Society, organised one of the World’s
Biggest Coffee Mornings to support Macmillan Cancer
Support. With the help of the local community and
members of other Chapters of the Red Hat Society
who supported the morning over £700 was raised.
Swaffham Sparklers feel that this is an important
charity with many of the group knowing friends and
family who are living with a cancer diagnosis so it was
decided to run the event again this year to support the
wonderful work done by Macmillan Cancer Support in
providing physical, emotional and financial support.
Alongside the coffee morning there will also be a
tombola and bottle stalls, jewellery and preloved
clothes, hats.
This year's coffee morning will be held at the
Conservative Club, London Road, Swaffham on
Thursday, 19th September from 10.00am to 2.30pm
All are welcome to come and support this wonderful
charity.
Sue Travis, Co-Queen of Swaffham Sparklers

Swaffham Jazz Club
For July’s session we welcomed The Colin Mason
Quartet - Colin on drums, Chris Kirk on trumpet,
Mark Ferguson on keyboard, Mike Smith electric
bass, with Eleanora vocals and keyboard and Tap
Robinson on electric guitar. An interesting feature
of the evening was how every so often it sounded
as though there were two trumpets playing. I asked
Chris to explain this weird effect. He said he uses an
attachment on his trumpet which can pick up the
sound and relay it to a ‘voice coder ‘ which then
feeds two notes into the amplifier, one a third - or
fifth - higher than the note Chris is actually playing.
The result is that he is, in effect, playing a duet!
As I have reviewed this ensemble several times,
what follows is an interview with Chris.
He was born and brought up in the village of Old
Coulston, Surrey. Both his parents were pianists
who liked to play the popular hits of the day. His
elder brother learnt to play the piano and became
keen on jazz. He used to take Colin to see top jazz
groups at the Fairfield Halls, Croydon. Then aged
eleven he started drum lessons with Rex Bennet, the
resident drummer with the BBC Big Band. Having
lessons from a top professional from the start is
one of the reasons he has such a sound technique.
He gives as his main influences, Ed Thigpin, Oscar
Peterson’s drummer and Joe Morello, Dave
Brubeck’s drummer. He then got interested in
Jimmy Hendrix’s drummer, Mitch Mitchell. Colin
first played in public with his brother at a school
concert. He thinks the two main problems in playing
the drums are the co-ordination of two hands and
two feet when you are just starting - rather like
when you learn to drive a car - and when you start
playing with other people, being careful not to
overpower the other members in a small group. In
order not to upset the neighbours he has built a
false wall in his practice room and triple-glazed the
windows - as well as stuffing his drums with bubble
wrap to deaden the sound.
Colin is now a master craftsman who we are proud
to have performing regularly for us.
The Pheonix Singers
The Pheonix Singers gave a performance of songs
spanning three decades from the 50s, 60s or 70s on
Friday 12th July. Everyone who gave up watching
Wimbledon was treated to a good mix of music and
were entertained by the Choir and their guests. Matt
Lee (a professional viola player) with his accompanist
Steve played some well known pieces including a
great medley of James Bond themes. Ian Clews, better
known as 'Senor Momento' was accompanied by the
Choir in a couple of pieces. Once again these ladies
put their talents on show with some good harmony
singing. All the proceeds of this concert will be
donated to the Swaffham & Litcham Home Hospice.
Don't miss the Pheonix Singers' next concert, which
will be in the Methodist Church, Swaffham on 6th
December at 7.30pm. Do come along and enjoy some
seasonal music in the newly refurbished church. The
Pheonix Singers donate all their proceeds to charity,
so please give them your support.
SCALGA
Greetings from the allotments
The weather has been kinder to us recently, not too
hot or wet, in fact just right for the plants to get a
move on. Of course we have more courgettes than
we can deal with and I am frantically looking up tasty
ways to deal with the glut. Apparently courgette cake
is a good standby.
Some of us (including ourselves) have had a touch of
blight on the potato tops. We quickly chopped the
leaves off. Fortunately the tubers themselves seem
unaffected and this year we have had more success
with the texture of the potato once boiled. Cara
seems to be the best for us at the moment.
In mid- July we attended the Beachamwell Open
Gardens day. We had a small stall on which we
tried to raise more awareness of the Swaffham
Allotments. People were kind enough to give us their
time and attention; hopefully we may get a few new
members. The gardens of course were wonderful,
only surpassed by the highly professional assortment
of cakes, scones and sandwiches on sale in the village
hall. This has led us (subject to approval) to open
the Shouldham Lane allotments during National
Allotments week. This year, because we have not
had time to prepare we are just inviting those who
are interested to come along and gain an insight
into what we do. This event will be held on the 18th
August from 11am until 4pm. Hopefully we will get a
good attendance which will enable us to plan in more
detail for next year.
Our best kept allotment judging was held on the
10th July. The judges had a hard task visiting all the
members' plots. Not only are the criteria a visual
thing based on neatness etc. but also it covers water
conservation, diversity of planting, composting,
attraction of wild life and much more. A job not for
the faint hearted!! Especially as they arrived when
some plots were in turmoil (see below)
Also on the 10th July plot holders arrived to find that
their sheds had AGAIN been broken in to, Chickens
had been let out and were running loose, some were
stolen. Two birds were found suffocated inside a
bucket with the lid on. This invasion and theft has
happened 9 times to one of the members. These
cruel and vile actions cannot be allowed to continue.
SCALGA are offering £100 reward to persons being
convicted of these crimes. We are aware that there
are a lot more unpleasant things happening but this
mindless cruelty and persistent contempt of the
law and the general public must not continue. The
Police have been very supportive but in these underfunded
times they have a difficult task. Someone
36
somewhere must have information that could help
stop this?
We were planning to open the allotments in the Open
Allotment Week 11th to the 18th August however, in
the light of these continual invasions on the plots,
what should have been a delightful happening has
had to be scrapped.
On a happier note, our resident pigeon has again
built her nest in our vine and she is sitting quietly
undisturbed while all the work goes on around her.
At least she doesn’t have to go far for food and water;
it’s straight over the fence and into the chicken run
to pinch the food. No wonder she is well nourished.
The chickens don’t seem to mind sharing.
The living salad from the supermarket that I divided
up is yielding a lovely crop of different leaves that cut
and come again. Not bad for 99p.
With the last of the strawberries I made strawberry
gin. This was not my original idea, our neighbours
very kindly gave us some to taste and it was so nice
and refreshing I had to share it. This can be made
with or without sugar and is wonderful as a long
drink with tonic and ice cubes. Try a bit of mint to
add an extra dash of flavour.
• 100ml blended strawberry juice
• 200ml gin. Blend together and store in the fridge.
• Mix together and hey presto a very satisfying drink.
'Of the Strawberry: Doubtless God could have made
a better berry, but doubtless God never did.'Dr.
William Butler 1536 – 1617. As he lived until 81 in
those early times, perhaps strawberries were the
answer?
Mayor's Parlour
What a busy and exciting month
this has been, meetings galore
and lots of civic events.
The Lions Dinner was a real
pleasure to attend, this group
of people never fail to surprise
me with their activities and dedication to the
community. The Home Hospice AGM brought us
up to date with the wonderful work they do and
how many people come through their doors.
Most of you know I am a Methodist and was
pleased to be invited to their celebration service
for the refurbishment of the Chapel. There’s a most
amazing mural covering a whole wall, depicting
people throughout the ages when Methodism first
started, well worth a visit for young and old.
I am an Honorary member of Rotary this year, a
group of lovely people who work hard supporting
people locally and abroad, there’s always such
camaraderie at their meetings.
The excitement has come with the thoughts and
aspirations of the present council to press forward
urgently regarding Sports and Leisure, good
facilities are desperately needed for the Town.
Lots of areas are being explored, I’m sorry I can’t
be more explicit, let’s hope next time!
It’s good to see the market thriving, a few new
stalls and the regulars who really make the market,
there’s a real friendly buzz about. Thank you for
supporting the market, when I was last in the
office we were quite worried about the footfall
and the possibility of it not being sustainable as a
thriving market, this I’m pleased to say has altered
and seems “Lion’s the place Den” to go in a Saturday. Our cafes
and Public Houses are second to none, such a good
selection, plus our great auction, all these things I
feel are turning Swaffham Market around .
The Dad's Army Day is on Saturday 3rd August from
10am - 3pm in the Market Place. There will be a
road closure, exhibits, stalls and entertainment,
dressing in that era
is welcome, hope to
see you there.
As I write I’m looking
at my honeysuckle
which has gone wild,
it’s beautiful, hope
you’re able to make
the most of these
lovely Summer days.
In Touch With Your Town
'In Touch with your Town' is put
together by the Town Clerk Richard
Bishop or occasionally by the Deputy
Town Clerk Claire Smith. It deals
with some of the most topical items
of the day and the odd item where the Council want
to share information with the Town.
Recreation Ground Toilet Project
Work is underway at the Recreation Ground Toilets
to reinstate the facilities. The doors are on and the
roof has been made sound. Please take note the
roof has been painted with anti-climb paint. If you
go up there you will end up being covered in a not
very pleasant sticky grease. The new sanitary ware
will be installed soon, and the doors will have a
timed lock as the facilities will not be available after
dark. There will also be a disabled toilet, and this
can be opened by a RADAR key. Local tradesmen
and the Town Council are working together to get
these open for the summer holidays and it is hoped
all will be finished by the time this newsletter is
distributed. Thanks go to James Edwards from
Swaffham Stoves, and Craig McColl from CJM
electrical who have put in their own time and
resources into the project.
Allotments
Unfortunately, there continues to be disturbances
and thefts at the allotments. The Police are aware
and have attended to take details of the incidents.
Please make sure all are reported so that the Police
can get a clear picture of what is going on. For
the security of the site, please could all allotment
holders close and lock all gates as you come and
go.
Filming At The Council Meetings
The first Council Meeting was filmed and streamed
‘Live’ on the Council Facebook site on 10th July.
The Live link allowed residents to view the meeting
and listen to the debate for the first time. All
Full Council meetings going forward will now be
streamed and available on Facebook.
Cemetery
The Cemetery on Brandon Rd is looked after by
our outside team who mow the grass around
the headstones and graves. Whilst we try to be
sensitive to how families and visitors tend graves,
we ask that no plants or shrubs are planted directly
into the graves, we are not able to mow around
them. We try to keep the area as tidy and attractive
as possible, which we know is appreciated by many
visiting the cemetery.
Town Councillor Surgery At Swaffham Market
The Town Council agreed at their July meeting
to hold a weekly ‘Town Councillor Surgery’ at
Swaffham Market. Please come along and talk to
your local Councillors about any of your concerns,
they will be there from 10am – 1pm every Saturday.
Recent Press Release - Sport And Leisure For Days
Field?
It was agreed by the Council at a special meeting on
27th June to take time out to look at an alternative
plan to develop a sports and leisure concept for
Days Field. It is a new concept essentially exploring
the principle of putting together a number of
services all in one place, to see if the economies
of scale and shared footfall can deliver a viable
project that could meet the Towns needs for Sport,
Leisure, Community, Civic, Heritage and Visitors to
the Town. The Council has recently re-applied for
planning permission for a development of 51 houses
on the site. All options previously considered are
still on the table, however, it has been agreed ‘in
principle’ by the Town Council to investigate further
with key organisations in the Town, Breckland
Council and Norfolk County Council, to establish if
there is any appetite for a new project that could
then be discussed in detail with the townsfolk of
Swaffham. Swaffham Town Council need to resolve
this potentially controversial subject of developing
and disposing of the former allotment site at Days
Field. A decision previously deferred to the new
Council, in the last six months of the previous
administration. Town Mayor Cllr Jill Skinner said:
“At first glance the potential for this project is
certainly worth investigating. The Town is in a
unique position at the present time with so many
things up in the air, we are awaiting the Sports and
Leisure feasibility report from Breckland Council,
we have the Green Britain Centre still closed and
the future is uncertain. It is time for our Town to
prepare itself for the future, we have made a good
start with our Neighbourhood Plan, now it is right
for us all to be more proactive to shape the kind of
Town we want for our children and grandchildren,
this should be our legacy. All we ask of people is
when we come and talk to you, please approach
this with an open mind, this could be exciting for
the Town, so let’s enjoy the ride together, we all
want what is best for our Town.”
Town Clerk Richard Bishop said:
“The Plan if realised would transform the sports
and leisure facilities on offer for Swaffham, but it is
only at an embryonic stage at the present time. We
need now to have those important conversations
with all interested parties, to flesh out the details
38

in a fully costed Business and Project Plan. It is
only when other organisations come on board,
will we know whether there is any project at all.
In theory it looks good and if we get the support
we need, then we will have enough information to
share with the public, who will have every chance
to lend their support, as we need everyone pulling
in the same direction. The set of circumstances we
have at present are ‘once in a lifetime’ in terms of
opportunity, so I am pleased that the Town Council
have agreed to at least try.”
Sport And Leisure – Update
Since the press release went out, the necessary
conversations have commenced, and good progress
is being made. The problem with projects of this
type, when a concept is agreed ‘in-principle’ it is
not a case of 20 questions to be answered, it is
more like 120 questions. So, there will be reports
from time to time in the newsletter and when the
Council are ready, if this project is deemed viable,
then they will consult with the public. The cost
projections and risk assessments are in progress,
we are not expected to have sight of the Breckland
commissioned ‘sport and leisure’ feasibility report
until early September, at which time we hope to
be in a position for the Town Council to make a full
assessment of all available options.
