circus performance on the Prom, take a spin in the big
wheel, catch a film outside - there’s so much stuff going on
in the sunshine. Make the most out of the last long bank
holiday weekend of the year, with the Rotary Carnival, and
say goodbye to summer in style. You’ve earned that extra
A new hope
“However small we are, we should always fight for
what we believe to be right. And I don’t mean fight
with the power of our fists or the power of our
swords… I mean the power of our brains and our
thoughts and our dreams.”
WISE WORDS from our new Children’s Laureate Cressida Cowell, and a fitting
way to sum up the actions of so many of the children and young people we have
featured in this issue. From striking for climate change to running their own
businesses, expressing themselves through art and writing to helping others, these
kids are the future we need, right here and right now in Worthing. Let’s believe
in them, support them and help them grow. After all, doesn’t it take a village (or a
seaside town) to raise a child?
BUSINESS FEATURE
FINANCE CORNER
The equity release explosion
Lifetime Mortgages are on the up. These
are mortgages that are available for those
aged 55 or over but are fundamentally
designed for those in retirement.
THESE DAYS THE SCHEMES have moved away from the label
of equity release and are better known as lifetime mortgages.
These products fall into two camps. The first is where you
borrow funds against your home and the interest is added to
the loan so there is nothing to pay each month. The second is
where either all of the interest or a defined proportion of the
interest (chosen by you) is paid so that the debt either remains
the same, or increases at a slower rate. Both types are repaid on
either death, vacating the home to move into permanent care or
on sale of the home and downsizing.
These schemes have a wide range of uses but these typically
include:
• Repaying an existing mortgage where you don’t have the
means to repay it and don’t want to downsize yet.
• Raising funds to update the home or make it retirement
ready. These home improvements can be anything from
a minor alteration to a complete renovation.
• As a gift or loan to family members in need, typically an early
inheritance to enable loved ones to get on the property
ladder themselves.
• Enhancing lifestyle so that you can fully enjoy your
retirement and use the money in your home to do so.
Schemes here often offer a drawdown facility so provide access
to a large sum that can be drawn down in lumps of £2000 or
more as needed. The benefit here
is that you only pay interest on the
funds utilised.
If you would like to know more
about how these schemes work
or what may be available to
you please contact the Emerald
WORTHING MATTERS
50 sides of Worthing with
Libin Mohamed
THEY KEPT
GETTING THE
WRONG TRAIN
BACK TO
WORTHING
Here & Now chatted to Libin Mohamed,
a 15-year-old who came to the UK as a
refugee from Somalia after her mother
was shot and wounded.
NOW SETTLED IN WORTHING, Libin combines caring for her
mother with her studies, volunteering as a Youth Advisor for
Worthing Community Chest and being an elected member of
Worthing Youth Council.
Why Worthing?
After coming to the UK, we lived in London. My parents wanted
to visit Brighton one day, but they got on the wrong train and
ended up in Worthing. My mum liked it so much that they kept
getting the wrong train back to Worthing. Then there were
riots where we were living, so when I was two my mum moved
us to the place she liked. I love the security and friendliness
of Worthing. You can meet new people so easily, and there
are opportunities for me here that I don’t think I would find in
London.
When were you happiest?
That’s easy; it was when I was trusted to
co-chair the Worthing Community Chest
AGM last year! My mum came and saw me
up there presenting from the throne in the
Council Chamber in front of all those people
and she was so proud.
What has been your most
embarrassing moment?
It was the first time I tried to make a speech
at the Youth Council and completely mucked
it up.
If you could bring something
extinct back to life, what would you choose?
I would bring back the big old mobile phones like they had in
the first series of Friends. Then there’d be no pressure to spend
money on the latest phone every few months, we could just
talk to people instead of doing everything through social media
(which can be good for some things, but not for the bullying and
hacking and negative images we see), and my studies wouldn’t
be disturbed every time my phone pings or flashes. Plus it
would keep us all healthier carrying around those 1kg brick
phones!
Who would play
you in the film of
your life?
The donkey from Shrek. It feels like we’re on the same journey.
Which book or piece of music changed
your life?
Malala Yousafzai’s biography. I read it when my lovely English
teacher gave it to me when I was 12, and it changed my life. I
always thought I had to wait until I was older to do anything
significant, but knowing she is a Muslim girl like me, I was
inspired by the difference she has made to herself, her family,
her country and even the world.
Who would you invite to party with you on
Worthing beach?
I’d invite our town crier! He is such a fun and smiley person! He
is always at events, ringing his bell. He makes me laugh and feel
happy and I think he symbolises for me that Worthing is not
your ordinary, boring town but full of character, just like him!
What single thing would you do to
improve Worthing?
I would create more social gathering places, like community
houses or youth houses. There was one down my street where
I got the opportunity to meet other people, go to places and
try things like horse-riding that my mum couldn’t take me to.
I know it’s hard to believe but I wasn’t very talkative and I
didn’t get out much and we didn’t meet our neighbours until I
went there. It’s a shame that places like that have closed down
because there’s no funding. I would also like Worthing to be a
bit more culturally diverse.
What would you donate to Worthing
Museum?
I love my Somalian heritage, so maybe some information about
my life and the stages I went through living in this country,
starting from my parents’ refugee background.
What event did you last pay to go to
in Worthing?
Does the Race for Life count? I paid to do that along the
seafront promenade and I raised sponsorship and bought the
t-shirt. That’s all I can do to help at the moment, but maybe
when I am older I can find a cure for cancer.
Thanks Libin! If there’s someone you would like to see us
interview for 50 Sides of Worthing, let us know at
COMMUNITY MATTERS
A running start
For all the good causes they support,
and despite the marvellous carnival they
give us in August every year, most of us
would struggle to associate the Rotary
Club with young people doing exercise.
A RETIRED GENTLEMEN’S luncheon club with ritualised
graces and speeches? Let’s be honest – yes, that’s what a lot
of us imagine. Young people running around an athletics track?
Not so much.
The adult distance is 5k, but the junior event will cover 2k, a
much more manageable distance for young people who might
be completely new runners. It will be open to anyone from
4-14 years of age, starting in September, and then happening
every Sunday morning on the athletics track at Worthing
Leisure Centre.
“It will be free for young people to enter,” says Marlene. “The
track will be a really safe environment for them. We want
young people getting out of bed every Sunday morning excited
about getting down to the track in search of a new personal
best.”
DETERMINED
TO CONNECT
WITH PEOPLE
OF ALL AGES
It turns out we can all be forgiven our
appalling prejudice because the new
president of Worthing Rotary, Marlene Butler,
would barely disagree. “There’s much more to
us than most people realise, but we know we need to update
our image,” she cheerfully concedes, “and putting some funding
into the launch of the Junior parkrun is just
one of the ways we’re going to do it.”
Junior parkrun
Determined to
connect with people
of all ages, the Rotary
Club are working in partnership with
Worthing Community Chest, South
Downs Leisure and the Council to help
some local mums set up the youth
version of the parkrun that dominates
the seafront every Saturday morning.
JUNIOR PARKRUN TO BE LAUNCHED
AS A YOUTH VERSION OF THE
SATURDAY MORNING PARKRUN
Children with special needs are welcome
to join once their disability is registered
with parkrun. The aim is to create a truly
inclusive atmosphere. “More people,
more active, more often,” as South Downs
Leisure likes to say.
Prom walk
To help get things
going, the Rotary
and Worthing
Community Chest
have also teamed
up to organise a
fundraising Prom
Walk in August. Young people (and older
ones too) are invited to sign up for a 5k
or 10k walk, a gentle introduction to a
world of exercise that might one day
lead to the Junior parkrun or even the
slightly wilder Dark Run at Tide of Light
in November.
There are, as any vaguely attentive Worthing resident knows
all too well, plenty of fundraising walks along the seafront.
There are walks in the light and
there are walks in the dark. And
marathons and half-marathons
and obstacle races and 10ks and
triathlons. But this brand new
addition to the crowded field
does have something slightly
different going on. While the
entry money will go to the
Rotary and the Chest, every
walker will be able to raise funds
for their own community group
or chosen charity. They can even
choose to raise funds for the
Junior parkrun and help to get it
up – and running! n
MAKE A DIFFERENCE
We're the generation, we're the inspiration
Protecting the environment is one of the
most pressing concerns for young people
today, and more and more of them are
making sure that their voices are heard
with national movements springing up to
fight for their future.
want us to do it. But because no one’s doing stuff and we need to
spread the word to get people to stop, they support us.”
Ettiene: “I am the Eco Council Leader at school so I do talk to the
class about it. A lot of friends have asked me questions about it.
“Our family is quite into this sort of thing and eco-friendly so
they’ve been very supportive of it. Our uncle and auntie have
worked for the Wildlife Trust in different places, so we’ve grown
up with that sort of environmental influence, and my dad shows
me the videos of Greta Thunberg doing her
speeches and the strikes in London and other
places that are that much much busier.”
So, do you take inspiration from
Greta Thunberg?
Ettiene: “Yes, she’s very inspirational. She’s
very brave and doing a great thing.”
Where do you see it going next
locally?
OUR LOCAL
BRANCH OF
YOUTH STRIKE
4 CLIMATE
has grown
from just two children in
May to over å50 at the last protest in June. The next action is
planned for September (info FB @worthingclimateaction or
YouthStrike4Climate Worthing) but we spoke to the two children
who started it all, Ettiene, 11, and nine-year-old Travis.
H&N: What inspired you to get the Worthing
movement going?
Ettiene: “Our cousins who live in Devon, they were doing it, and
then seeing all of the news around it was kind of something we
wanted to do. I think everyone wants to grow up in a world where
you can do things like getting a job or having children and not have
to think, well, should I actually be doing this or is it not worth it
because of what’s happened to Earth.”
Travis: “I wanted to take part in helping the environment and not
just let everyone else start it. I knew that maybe that if we didn’t
start it, it might not have started. The other people who did it [in
June], I think they did because they heard we were doing it.”
Do your family and friends support you?
Travis: “If we were taking time off school and it wasn’t necessary,
if people were acting to save the environment, then they wouldn’t
Ettiene: “Since we started, when it was just the
two of us, last time there were a lot more people
on the march, so we’ve obviously inspired people, which is really
good. And since there’s more people, they can spread the word to
more people, who can spread the word to people they know. So I
think there’ll be more and more people every time, hopefully.”
Do you have any top tips that children can
do at home?
Travis: “I think to start off, if you can’t do lots of stuff, when
you’re not using your room, turn off lights.”
Ettiene: “Whenever we go into shops, and they ask if you
want a bag, I ask if it’s plastic or paper. I’ll get it if it’s paper, but if
it’s plastic, just think again. And if you can, recycle food waste. Less
food waste going to landfill and the composting and that can be
used again and it’s kind of a cycle. Just little things like that.”
Where can young people in Worthing go for
more information?
Ettiene: “These are some ones you should check out. Worthing
Climate Action Network (Worthing CAN) were really great,
Michelle came down and sat with us on our first protest, and
promoted the second event in Worthing. If you’re quite new to this
and you’re interested, they can give you more information.
“Also, Journey to Zero Waste Worthing is how Worthing can
be better with recycling, as they say, zero waste. There’s also
lots of videos with the strikes up in London and of Greta
Thunberg which are very interesting and inspirational.”
MAKE A DIFFERENCE
Find your voice
There are so many ways in
which young people can
make a difference and find
their voices within our local
community.
HERE’S A ROUND-UP of just some of the
projects going on, but be sure to check out our
green issue next month which will be bursting
with more ideas.
Like Ettiene’s, many local schools run eco-clubs,
with activities ranging from analysing air quality
near the school, turning off items that are not
being used, campaigning for better road safety
and reducing colour photo copying and the
amount of paper used by the school.
This year, Thomas a Becket Junior is celebrating
ten years as a Green Flag Eco School, an
internationally recognised award for excellence
in environmental action and learning, earning
itself a place in the Eco Schools Hall of Fame.
School initiatives include nominating a child in
each class as Energy Monitor to ensure electrical
equipment is turned off when not in use. They
also have Eco Rangers who check classrooms
each week and reward the most energy efficient
class every term.
VOLUNTEER FOR CCPS
Joining TAB Junior in the Eco Schools Hall
of Fame, the E.Y.E. Project (Eco, Young and
Engaged) is a sustainable learning project helping
local schools and young people within them to
make a positive difference to their environment.
In June, the project ran the Primary School
Plastic Challenge aimed at encouraging children
in schools across West Sussex to think about
their plastic waste and how to recycle it. The
challenge culminated in the annual Eco-Summit,
when children from primary and secondary
schools across Worthing, Adur and surrounding
areas came together to discuss the environment
through workshops, activities and discussions.
For younger activists, Plastic Free Worthing
has just introduced a Superhero Certificate
for all children that take part in their beach
or park cleans. Recent picks have taken
place at Victoria Park and from Coast and
Sea Lane Cafe. Check out their FB page @
plasticfreeworthing for more info.
Young volunteers from the age of 14 years are
welcome at the CCPS Playscheme during their
summer break. The scheme meets for four weeks
during the summer in Storrington and Oak
Grove College in Worthing, entertaining special
needs children with trips and activities including
canoeing, swimming and bouncy castles. It gives
recognised accreditation if you are doing a DofE
award and offers valuable experience for those
planning on a career with children. More info
ccpsorganiser@gmail.com or FB
@ccpsplayscheme.
Another great way to fill your summer holidays is
volunteering at your local library as part of the
Summer Reading Challenge. Young people ages
14 years and up are encouraged to get involved
by explaining the challenge, listening to children
talk about the books they have read, and giving
out the all-important rewards! There are other
volunteering roles available for young people from
time to time; check with your nearest library.
Swap Shop Shoreham is a new initiative on FB
(@SwapShopShoreham) for children and young
people to swap or sell outgrown or unwanted
clothes and prevent them ending up in landfill.
The Neighbourhood Store in Shoreham is also
looking at starting swishing events for teenagers;
let them know you’re interested at
WHERE TO EAT & DRINK
If you’ve been down to
your local watering hole
recently, you might have
notices a few changes
afoot. We’re not talking
snappy decor or a raft of
new beers on tap – pubs
are staking their claim on
their role as the heart of
the community.
Raise the bar
COW & OAK QUIZ
GAMING RETRO-BUTION
THE LOCAL BOOZER is a lynchpin of
the British way of life, and in many ways
it reflects the changes to our society
over the last few decades. Pubs are a
symbol of whatever community we tend
to find ourselves in, and often reflect the character
and interests of their owners.
Just look at what’s on offer in our local boozers and
bars. You could spend a month attending a quiz at
every different pub in Worthing and still possibly
not have scratched the surface, from the
legendarily difficult one at the George and
Dragon, to the fundraisers for Superstar
Arts at the Corner and Beach Houses, the
snappily titled Sorry I Haven’t a Moo! at the
Cow & Oak and the fiercely competitive
Jenga pub quiz at The New Amsterdam, to
name but a few.
Speaking of games, head over to View Cafe
Bar for their All-Aboard Games Night for kids
and adults alike, where you can bring your
own board game, join in everything from card
games to Warhammer and stay as long as you
like. The Park View has a weekly pool and poker
competition. Over at The Libertine Social, there’s
Gaming Retro-bution with a huge selection of
retro consoles and games to play for free, plus
light guns and plenty of competitors, while The
Vine boasts a retro games table where you can
battle Donkey Kong and Pac Man.
There’s food for thought with regular talks and
chats, including Worthing Skeptics at Brunswick &
Thorn, plus speakers at The Grizzly Bear including
romance psychologists, serial killer profilers,
neuroscientists and folk musicians. Many pubs
form meeting hubs for organisations from local
artists to working parents, independent business
owners and digital media workers.
WHERE TO EAT & DRINK
Plenty organise regular pop-up events
with local eateries, from Momma
Cherri and DD’s Jerk ’N' Ting to Kitgum
Kitchen and Halloumilicious, or niche
breweries who are happy to chat craft
beer to customers. Others hold family
fun days, from Easter Egg hunts and
carols around the piano (a Corner House
festive institution now!) to mini festivals,
including the Summer Busk and MUSH!,
taking place at multiple venues across
town, as well as the infamous GunFest
over the August
bank holiday
at The Gun in
Findon. And
there are lots
of quirky oneoffs,
including
Finch’s
memorable
Draw for
Drinks (best
art wins a
tipple).
THE VINE'S RETRO GAMES TABLE
Of course, it goes without saying that
local pubs have also upped the ante
when it comes to food and drink, from
sophisticated gin menus at places like
the Egremont or The Libertine Social, to
creative cocktails and even a traditional
cream tea at The Whisk(e)y Rooms.
There’s a host of live music, and many
have now expanded into supporting
other performing arts, such as the
Worthing Theatre Trail in September,
with not-for-profit organisations such
as The Inn Crowd and Pub Is The Hub
involved in creating performance spaces
and even libraries, pop-up tea rooms,
shops, post offices and delicatessens in
local pubs.
It’s all part of creating a relaxed and
shared community space that works
for everyone, somewhere to go and
meet other people, in a convivial and
even inspiring atmosphere. What are
you waiting for? Get down to your local
boozer today! n
The drinks
are on us
Jack
The Grizzly Bear
“The Old Fashioned, elegant in its
simplicity, is my perfect choice for a
summer evening, strong enough and zesty
enough for those who like their vitamin C
kick. We barmen don't get enough of that.”
ARTS & LITERATURE
Young arts run free
Picasso famously stated that every child
is an artist, and there’s no doubt that
giving children the chance to express
themselves creatively encourages their
ability to imagine, think, innovate and
even fail.
HERE & NOW HAS TAKEN A WHISTLE-STOP TOUR around
some of the projects taking place locally to get children and
young people involved in art; we’d love to hear from you if you
know of any more!
Many local high schools and colleges have
just produced end of year shows for students
to display their work, including Northbrook
and Durrington High School (which recently
exhibited at Colonnade House). Five
schools and colleges participated in June’s
Worthing Artists’ Open Houses (WAOH)
show, an experience which Darcie
Elizabeth, who exhibited at Venue 19 this
year, feels is essential for the developing
artist.
“I study illustration at university so
ART K ART CLUB participating in exhibitions is important to me,”
explains Darcie. “They are great networking
opportunities. It was my first year doing it and a valuable
experience for learning how to curate my work. I’ll definitely be
doing WAOH again!”
in London (14
Jul-4 Aug).
Olivia Tomlinson
from Worthing
College has had
her animated
short film Mono
selected for the
show, which
consists of work
from young
people aged 7-19
from schools all
over the UK. Her
film was one of BY DARCIE ELIZABETH
only 139 artworks
selected out of 6,200 submissions.
Olivia said, “I really wasn’t expecting it to happen, but it’s a very
exceptional opportunity. It’s such a massive confidence boost;
you always think someone else’s work is better than yours.
Showing my work at the Royal Academy is an absolute honour.”
For primary-school-aged children, organisations such as
Creative Waves and Same Sky continue to champion access
to the arts for young people, while a wealth of workshops and
classes have sprung up in recognition of the fact that creative
minds shape the future. Art-Ful, Art-K and Art Smudge and
Doodle all work with children from 4 to 16 years, while West
Sussex County Council runs the Jellyfish programme through
the FindItOut Centres in Worthing and Lancing for teenagers
interested in art and music.
Another local young artist will be making waves this summer at
the first Young Artist Summer Exhibition at the Royal Academy
ART-FUL is running children’s holiday workshops focussing on
animation and cartoons and Harry Potter-inspired art, as well as
drop-in slime and pottery painting sessions. Info art-ful.co.uk
ART-K teaches art to children aged six and up, as that is typically
the age children start to draw realistically, which means they are
ready for guidance to develop their love of art and hone their visual
skills. FB @artkworthing
ART SMUDGE AND DOODLE meets at the Shoreham Centre
on term-time Saturday mornings to encourage creativity in children
aged 4-12 years. FB @artsmudgeanddoodle
APW has a programme of summer workshops for children covering
everything from zendoodles to Michel Keck collage dogs. Info
apwarthouse.wordpress.com
Meanwhile, local artist Amelie Baer Collyer from Action
Painting Workshops has nearly hit her fundraising target
to open a Community Art House in Worthing for everyone
from young to old. The plan is to use profits to offer free and
subsidised access to children, young carers and those in receipt
of certain public services, as well as work experience, a free
library and free monthly talks with local creatives. Pop over to
@APWArtHouse on
FB to support the
project. n
Ed. Note:
Hazel has taken
a well-deserved
month off after
WAOH. She’ll
be back in
September.
outdoor performances of Dip (Sat 3 Aug), which
celebrates how humans find and connect with each
other, and the hilarious Giant Balloon Show (Sat 24
Aug) outside the Pavilion. Children will also enjoy the
puppet show Look Up (Sat 17 Aug) which follows
a child who is fearless, playful and wondering if
everyone has forgotten how to look up and see
the birds. n
REVIEW SPIDER-MAN
Spider-Man:
Far From Home at
the Dome Cinema
Spider-Man may be known
for sticking to walls, but will
this film stick with you?
Spider-Man: Far From Home is
great! I feel like we needed
a more upbeat film after the
grave events of Avengers:
Endgame. And this film mixes
the right amount of comedy with
action. I believe we have one of
the best Spider-Man films, definitely up at the top with
Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man 2 and Jon Watts’ Spider-Man:
Homecoming.
This film is sure to stick around, and I would definitely
recommend that you see it. n
It’s time to Look Up
from our phones
With a glorious summer shining through
and kids everywhere keeping their
beloved parents busy in the holidays,
it’s the perfect time for all of us to look
up from our phones and tablets and
experience
life away
from our
screens.
ONE EVENT IN
PARTICULAR
I would love to
highlight to you
is my top pick
in our Summer
of Circus season. At the Pavilion Theatre on 17 August, we have
a magnificent show called Look Up, a celebration of what we
can see if we step outside of our everyday lives and embrace
the world around us. The show takes place on a self-supported
custom-made aerial rig and explores the relationship between
circus performer, puppet and audience.
The story follows Robyn, a child puppet, who is fearless,
playful and not interested in phones or work, but instead has a
fascination with birds and flying. He wonders why everyone else
is only looking down, and explores the wonderful world around
him away from technology, embracing nature.
Tickets for Look Up cost just £6.50, and there are two intimate
performances at 11am and 2pm. You can discover more by
visiting worthingtheatres.co.uk.
formed in mid-1992,
when the UK based
pop star Paul Young
found himself with
some down-time and phoned a few musician friends with
the intent of starting a Tex-Mex band. In 2002 the Pacs
reacted to supporters of the band and recorded their first
album. A collection of 12 original songs that ran through
their influences of the Texas Tornados, Doug Sahm, Flaco
Jimenez, Roy Orbison, The Band, Chuck Berry, Ry Cooder
and Calexico, the album pulled in an impressive array of
positive reviews.
Listening Party: Beneath the Surface by Aren Drift
This may be an EP, but in its scope Beneath
the Surface by Aren Drift is absolutely EPic.
NOT IN THE MODERN, co-opted car insurance, internet gaming
form of Epic, but a proper, belting, blockbuster Epic – in a mere
four tracks.
CREDIT: KATERINA TUMOVA
The music soars above, like some majestic, legendary bird; you
leap to grab hold of its feet, and you are sent flying with it.
The perfectly melded guitars, bass, drums and vocals are like a
winter chill to the face, slapping you with monster thumping riffs
and lyrics. If Beneath the Surface were a film, then it would be a
meticulously directed saga, each part in its rightful place, shade
and light in perfect unison, the perfect length.
AREN DRIFT ARE: AREN (RADKA NEMCOVA), VOCALIST, BACKING
GUITAR, SONGWRITER, PRODUCER; MATT PLUMLEY, LEAD GUITAR;
DOMINIC CALLIHANE, DRUMS; THEO CORCORAN, BASS
Yes, if it was a film then you would need to watch it; but instead,
watch Aren Drift, whenever you next get a chance, and listen to
this EP, before they hit it big. n
THOMAS H GREEN - MUSICAL TIME MACHINE
Dave Fenton
moved to Worthing
a year ago. Now
the Time Machine
materialises in his
back garden to
sweep him off.
HE’S BEST KNOWN FOR
BEING FRONTMAN of The
Vapors, and they, in turn, are
best known for one monster
hit, ‘Turning Japanese’, but
there’s more to his life than
that.
THE VAPORS CIRCA 1980
The Life & Times
of Dave Fenton
from The Vapors
THE VAPORS AT A RECENT CONCERT PHOTO: SI ROOT
Dave Fenton was born 66
years ago to a headmaster and
a housewife. The second of
three sons, he grew up in Reigate until the age of 12
when his family moved to Redhill, but it was before
that, in late August 1963 at the Gaumont Cinema in
Bournemouth, that his life changed forever.
“The family was on holiday,” he recalls. “I was ten
and my brother was eight. We got the choice of
going to the funfair or seeing a gig. The Beatles were
playing with Tommy Quickly and Billy J Kramer & the
Dakotas. I chose the gig, and thankfully my brother
backed me up. After that, I just wanted to write
songs myself. I got a secondhand acoustic guitar the
next Christmas.”
By 15, with hair as long as his school would allow,
he was playing folk clubs around Croydon and
Surrey. He went to Nottingham University to study
law, and became heavily involved in the social
committee. One of his jobs was to get bands on
and off stage, including Roy Harper, Chicken Shack,
Osibisa and Captain Beefheart (“He was brilliant!”).
On 9 February 1972 Dave again encountered Paul
McCartney, who was playing his first live dates since
1966 with his new band, Wings, on an impromptu
tour of Britain’s universities.
“He just turned up in a van one lunchtime, and we
said, ‘Yes, you can play’,” recalls Dave. “From there
it was just a matter of getting an audience together,
which really didn’t take too long!”
In 1977, Dave became a fully qualified lawyer. He
began working for a firm in Guildford, but also sold
his car to buy an electric guitar. He soon embraced
the new punk sound.
“I loved it, the ethic that anyone can do it,” he says. “It encouraged
me, because I’m quite shy but I like writing songs. I couldn’t find
anyone else to sing them, so I ended up fronting a band.”
DAVE AND BRANKA FENTON
PERFORMING AS THE VAPOR
CORPORATION
His life might have been very different if his firm hadn’t given him an
ultimatum. “In 1978 they asked me to sign a new contract for another
year, but they put a provision in that I couldn’t play in a band,” he
remembers. “They felt that brought the firm into disrepute.”
Dave took the plunge and threw himself into music. He quit the law
firm to work in a fruit shop, but a year later his band, The Vapors,
were spotted by Bruce Foxton of The Jam, who saw them play at the
Three Lions pub in Farncombe. He got them a couple of support slots
on The Jam’s May ’79 Jam ‘Em In tour.
On first, they nevertheless received an encore, impressing Jam
manager and Paul Weller’s dad John, who agreed to co-manage
them with Foxton. They soon had a record deal with United Artists.
The Vapors’ debut single ‘Prisoners’ appeared in late ’79, and they
supported The Jam on their Setting Sons tour. The single did nothing,
but early in the following year they released a new song called
‘Turning Japanese’. It was a massive hit, in the UK and abroad.
“It was an amazing time,” smiles
Dave. “One of the things that’s stuck
in my head forever was when I was
woken up by the radio alarm playing
my own record.”
Unfortunately, although The Vapors
didn’t know it, this short period was
their commercial peak. “EMI bought
out United Artists,” Dave explains.
“We had no friends in our own record
company.
“Following that we were in the charts
at No.3 and The Jam were No.1
THE VAPORS NOW
TURNING JAPANESE: THE UNSTOPPABLE HIT
[with ‘Going Underground’].
John and Bruce said ‘Sorry,
chaps, we haven’t got time
to manage you’. So we
effectively lost our record
label and management at same time.
“The follow-up to ‘Turning Japanese’ was ‘News at Ten’. We went to
see our new A&R man and he didn’t even know we had a single out
that day. Despite this, it was still the charts’ highest climber, but the
BBC had a strike so we couldn’t do ‘Top Of The Pops’.”
‘News at Ten’ stalled just outside the Top 40. It was the beginning of
the end. The Vapors produced two albums of spiky, socially aware
new wave guitar pop, ‘New Clear Days’ (1980) and ‘Magnets’ (1981),
but the writing was already on the wall.
“Our A&R bloke came to rehearsal to hear us play what would have
been our seventh single,” sighs Dave. “We jammed it out to him, then
we all went down the pub. He bought us a pint, said,
‘Cheers! Brilliant!’, shook all our hands, then went and
cancelled our studio time. That was the last straw.”
In 1982 Dave quit The Vapors, which finished the band.
He spent the next decade in The Vapor Corporation,
known as TVC, with his girlfriend (now wife) Branka
and her brother, but never quite made it. His main
income came, instead, from sound engineering at
Croydon’s Cartoon Club, until he eventually returned
to law, becoming a successful music lawyer. He
recently took early retirement.
In 2016, although drummer Howard Smith couldn’t
commit, The Vapors reformed with original guitarist
Edward Bazalgette and bassist Steve Smith, alongside
TVC drummer Michael Bowes. They’ve recorded a new
album with Steve Levine (producer of Culture Club’s
biggest albums), are touring the States as part of Lost 80s Live, and
this autumn will be supporting From The Jam, featuring their old mate
Bruce Foxton.
“My kids come to the gigs and my wife does merch,” says Dave. “My
son even plays guitar when Ed can’t. He’s better than me! People
say ‘Do you mind being a One Hit
Wonder?’ and I say, ‘It’s better
than being a No Hit Wonder!’ I’m
satisfied by the way things have
gone. It’s amazing people still want
to listen and that I still have a fairly
reasonable income from stuff I did
40 years ago. Who can say that?”
Who indeed! n
DADIFESTO
That'll learn 'em!
Paulo Coelho, the Brazilian author of
The Alchemist, once said, “A child can
teach an adult three things: to be happy
for no reason, to always be busy with
something, and to know how to demand
with all his might that which he desires.”
NOT TO PICK HOLES in this brilliant fella’s views, but I can
think of plenty more than three. Pretty much every time I have
hung out with my small person since the day he was born I have
learned something new.
It is utterly inconsequential that many of these valuable lessons
have been on subjects about which I didn't realise I needed to
know. So, given that I am now in the position to pass such sagelike
views on to you good folks, I thought I would do just that.
1
2
You can ruin a person’s whole day by giving
them a different-coloured sippy cup.
Tiredness is for the weak.
It doesn't matter if you woke up at 4.30am then raced
around non-stop all day like Wile E. Coyote chasing the
Roadrunner whilst mainlining Haribo, bedtime is for
3
4
suckers. Never underestimate
the fact that your child can
be utterly convincing, in the
middle of an exhausting
OK, so cheat is a strong word.
What I actually meant is “play
by the rules”. You know “the
rules”? Yes, the same ones liable to change at a moment’s
notice on the whim of the banker. The banker can only be
someone aged seven. And God forbid anyone wants to
read the instructions.
Try as you might, you will not truly influence
So you’ve never been...
SKATEBOARDING
ONE OF MY FRIENDS at school once bought a skateboard to walk around with in the hopes of
passing himself off as cool. That was until someone pointed out the clean wheels were giving him
away. Don’t be like him.
Why go? With skateboarding added to the programme for the Summer Olympics next year in
Tokyo, now is the time to perfect your flip tricks and ollies. And if the kids need any inspiration,
eleven-year-old Sky Brown is set to compete as part of Team GB.
Where can I do it? There are skate parks in Homefield Park, on Beach Green in Lancing
(which came about after lengthy campaigning from local children) and in Shoreham.
I could do with some pointers! Dale Lay runs the free South Coast Skate Club on
Saturday mornings in Homefield Park for kids and adults alike (FB @SCSCWorthing). Or head over
to Brighton Youth Centre where they run sessions for younger children at their indoor skate park to
teach them the basics, as well as She Shredders for girls from 13 years up.
What about the kit? Family-run Alleyoops is a good starting point down on Worthing
seafront, or head over to Chi and talk to Jamie at ESP.
Anything else? Pro-skater Lucy Adams, UK’s number 1 in 2013, worked as an active
communities officer for young people in Worthing until 2016 and is now chairwoman and a founding
member of not-for-profit body Skateboard England. She even custom made her own skateboard with
local luthier (maker of stringed instruments) David Simmons. n
Love everyone like a rock
I recently read that old favourite
childhood tale Stone Soup, and was
struck by how pertinent the story is.
IN IT, TRAVELLERS COME TO A TOWN, or village, with little else
but a cooking pot. They ask the townsfolk for some food, as they
are hungry, but no one is willing to share with them. So they fill
the pot with water, and a single stone. When asked what they’re
making, the travellers say “Stone soup!” and extol the virtues of
how wonderful this dish tastes. They say that they’ll share with
the person asking, but only in return for a little something to go
in the soup, to give it some more flavour. This goes on, until they
are left with a hearty, plentiful soup, which can be shared amongst
everyone. It’s a fable about the value of sharing.
My immediate thought was that we could probably do with some
more sharing in Worthing. More stone soup should be made
available. So, I reckon we could create an event, a festival if you will,
based around that concept. We could call it the Stone Soup Picnic.
We get a giant cauldron, gallons deep, we build a fire, and we fill
that cauldron with water and hang it over the top of the fire. Entry
to our little festival is sharing. Sharing some vegetables, some
spices, some herbs, or sharing something by way of entertainment,
if you don’t have enough money for food. The entertainment would
be a stone soup as well. Anyone who can sing or dance or tell a
story (which is everyone) can get up and do it, and they get a share
of the soup, and the night.
We let that soup bubble away, until the end of proceedings, when
it is shared amongst everyone who has given something to the
evening.
It really could, and should, be that easy. And I will do it. In the
autumn, or the winter, of this year, I will hold one of these Stone
Soup Picnics. I’ll start small, then see what happens. You’re all
invited, of course. See you there. n
STUFF THAT MATTERS
How to (still) be young
in Worthing
Yo yo yo! It’s Eden Green back on the
mike! Only this time she’s 16 and much
wiser.
IF YOU’VE NO IDEA WHAT I’M ON ABOUT, I shall enlighten
you dear reader: in March 2018, I completed my work experience
at Here & Now magazine where I wrote a sensational (if slightly
pessimistic) piece on activities for young persons in our wonderful
region. In fact, it was so sensational that the kind folk at the
magazine have asked me to write a follow-up to see if any real
change has been observed by yours truly. Before I bless you all with
my new insight, perhaps you should first give the original a little
eyeball:
How to be young in Worthing
bored of 2p machines
very quickly.
Bowling? Expensive.
Restaurants? Even
more expensive.
WORTHING
PRIDE 2019
I decided a different
approach was needed, and thought I’d
take advantage of Here & Now’s connections by asking people
in the office (because the entire magazine is dedicated to things
going on in Worthing, so someone was bound to know) and via
Facebook. I got a plethora of responses: I learned of RSOPA, who
offer theatrical classes to teens, I was told about Blueprint 22,
with projects for young people along the South Coast, and I heard
about the #Scratchpad project. However, there was one notable
theme: none of these things were permanent fixtures.
I CAN REALLY
SEE WORTHING
MAKING THE
EFFORT TO
INCLUDE THE
YOUTH
Worthing is renowned for its elderly population, and there are
many places that cater to their needs – so what is there for the
youth to do? Now when I say youth, I don’t mean four-year-olds at
arts and crafts sessions or nine-year-olds who go to roller-skating
parties: I mean the teenagers of Worthing, who make up 9% of its
population.
“Oh, get off your phone, play outside,” say the
parents, followed by, “Don’t be out after dark
though, and let me know where you are at all
times, and don’t go out alone, and don’t wear
that, and...”
Well, do you want me to go out or not? Telling
me to go out is not helpful when there’s
nothing to do. My trips to town consist of a
traipse round the shops, a nondescript piece
of sugary dough from Greggs and, because
you can only go to the cinema so many times,
I’ve now taken to untangling the slinkies in
Hawkins Bazaar as a source of entertainment,
or playing hide and seek in Debenhams, or
looking at the pictures of dogs in the dog books in Waterstones,
or just seeing who can drink a bottle of water the fastest (these
are all very real things we actually do). As fun as these things are,
they’re not the same as heading down to Brighton and hitting the
laser tag, or the fair on the pier, or walking round the Lanes. Why
is there nothing teenagers travel to Worthing for?
I made it my mission at Here & Now to find fun things for people
my age to do in Worthing. I considered the various venues in
the town: the leisure centres were alright, but if I ask someone
to come to town with me, the last thing they want to be doing
is exercise. The mini golf was something I enjoyed, but it wasn’t
always open. The Pier amusements? Well, yes, but you can get
What the town needs is a venue open all hours (or at least until
curfew) just for teens. A place with everything: table tennis,
football table, vending machine, pool table, pinball machine,
music, mocktails - even some beanbags would do! A place for
young people to socialise (or not), an escape room where parents
aren’t allowed.
This seems like a pipe dream, but it really is achievable, with areas
like Teville Gate, Union Place and the Lido in need of renovation
and the council taking suggestions. Think of the tourism it would
bring in; young people would travel into Worthing instead of out!
A youth club you don’t have to join but can just turn up to; let’s
face it, a £2 entry fee is better than a £20 bowling lane, and it
would keep your darn teenagers off their darn phones (for a while
at least).
Here endeth the old article.
So there’s that, and I must say, a year and a half on there’s still
a significant lack of youth centre, and Teville Gate remains
very much a fenced-off mystery. This said, I’ve observed some
differences in youth activities; it is possible that it is because I am
now 16 and all of a sudden these activities are no longer forbidden,
or that now I’m ‘more mature’ *cough* my parents have allowed
me a little more independence, but I must say, my post-GCSEthree-month-summer
hasn’t had a dull moment yet! A quick visit
to the Here & Now website and I’ve learned of at least five things
I could be doing to fill up my August, from music workshops to a
weekly quiz. I can really see Worthing making the effort to include
the youth; I managed to attend Worthing Pride, and the all-ages
atmosphere only reinforced my conclusion. I hope this attitude
continues to grow, as we are not where we need to be yet, but it’s
safe to say that Year 10 Eden would be happy. n
