THE STATE OF WORTHING
XR
WORTHING
CAMPAIGN
From the land plenty and from
the sea health
Sometimes mottos can teach you a thing or two.
Here in Worthing we have our roots in mackerel fishing,
market gardening and health hangouts for sickly royals.
These days it can feel like we are lurching from one potential environmental
catastrophe to another, with rising sea levels, plastic pollution and poor air quality all
proving to be very local problems. We live with the evidence every time we walk on
our stony beach, shop in our supermarkets, sit in another traffic jam on the A27. So
our message this month is to get back to our roots. Do a litter pick, grow your own,
go zero waste, get on your bike - we’re full of ideas about local community projects
and groups this issue who can help you do just that. Let’s make some changes.
Ex terra copiam e mari salutem indeed.
Let’s go to Ferring!
IF IT’S GOOD ENOUGH FOR DEREK THE DOG, then
it’s good enough for us! We talked to the locals for the
lowdown on this seaside gem.
n Walk down the Rife to the sea and along to the
Bluebird Café on the beach - it’s dog friendly, and
you have to try the Seaside Smoothies!
n Our kids love visiting the animals at Ferring Country
Centre, and you can pop over to Kingsley Coffee
afterwards and paint a pottery unicorn
n Andalucia restaurant serves the best tapas ever with
fantastic live Spanish music – but make sure you book!
n Pop in for a pint at The Tudor Close or The Henty Arms
(you’ve just missed their July Beer Festival but stick it
in the diary for next year)
Best of all there are no street lights, so you can see the stars!
WORTHING MATTERS
50 sides of Worthing with Jean Raleigh
Here & Now spoke to Jean Raleigh, who runs
Worthing’s first zero waste shop Larder on
Montague Street and is part of the team behind
Plastic Free Worthing.
WHY WORTHING? We often hear about the plastic pollution in the
oceans, but many don’t realise Worthing has its own offshore Marine
Conservation Area called Kingmere which includes the Worthing Lumps
and is a black sea bream breeding ground. What better reason is there to
be proud of our town and not pollute our beaches with single-use plastics?
When were you happiest?
When we won a Sunny Worthing award for a grassroots movement; it was
at that moment we knew we had to deliver and get our town accredited
Plastic Free Community status.
What has been your most embarrassing moment?
When we won a Sunny Worthing award for a grassroots movement when
we had not even started on our mission! We had no idea the idea had that
much support!
If you could bring something extinct back to life, what
would you choose and why?
We want to keep the rare and wonderful Baillon’s Wrasse fish from going
extinct by celebrating and protecting our local Marine Conservation Zone,
along with our many other equally deserving local wildlife creatures.
Who would play you in
the film of your life?
It would have to be some Oompa Loompas with litter pickers.
Which book changed your life?
No-one is Too Small to make a Difference by Greta Thunberg.
Who would you invite to rave with you on
Worthing beach?
Anyone and everyone, as long as they bought their own water bottles and
cups and paper reusable decor and took their litter home!
What single thing would you do to improve Worthing?
Have every event declared to be a Plastic Free Event with Refill taps
everywhere painted up so they are celebrated and used.
What would you donate to Worthing Museum?
A single-use plastic water bottle as a ridiculous example of the follies
of the past.
What event did you last pay to go to in Worthing?
Worthing Pride at Beach House Grounds.
Thanks Jean! If there’s someone you would like us to
interview for 50 Sides of Worthing, let us know at
COMMUNITY MATTERS
From trash to cash
I knew for sure that sustainability had
entered the public consciousness when
an elderly relative cheerily informed me
that he was wearing a pair of bamboo
underpants.
BAMBOO IS, HE INSISTED ON TELLING ME, both selfregenerating
and surprisingly soft to wear. There was
probably more, but I’d stopped listening.
Which is a shame, because we’ve all got more to learn about
what to wear and how long we should go on wearing it. Most of
us are still throwing things away before we need to. That may
not be the message you expect to hear from a charity that raises
funds from textile recycling, but that’s the truth of it. Not all
underpants are made of bamboo.
When you finally have no choice but to throw those old clothes
away, just before they smell or become legally indecent, please
don’t let them end up in landfill for the next two hundred years.
Put them in one of Worthing Community Chest’s big green bins
and we’ll turn your old trousers into grants for local community
groups and events.
Recycling socks and sandals have helped us fund all sorts of
green projects, including the very first Green Dreams Festival
back in 2016. So it makes perfect sense for us to be there again
this year on Sunday 29 September, collecting your old mobile
phones, tablets, cameras, games consoles, jewellery, stamps
and unwanted currency. We’ll stop all that going into landfill too
and then we’ll turn it all into cash and then we’ll give the money
back to more green projects in our town. It sounds like a really
good plan.
The Chest
need to
keep raising
those funds
because we
need to keep
supporting
Green Dreams
Field Place,
Worthing
the new, grass roots community
activity that’s springing up all over the
town. That’s why we’re setting up a
new funding stream aimed specifically
at smaller or newer community groups
that may have little or no experience
in applying for funds.
We’ve set the limit for this new
fund at £750, and we’re not the
only ones. Worthing Community
Chest and West Sussex County
Council had exactly the same idea
at exactly the same time, choosing
exactly the same amount. That can’t
be a coincidence. It means we’re all
seeing the same potential for new
and sustainable community groups
in our town. These new grants will
be easier to apply for than the larger
grant stream we already run, and our
staff and volunteers will be available
to assist you all the way through your
application.
Your group could
be a lunch club
or a playgroup, a
neighbourhood
association
or a group of
green space
volunteers. Or
it could be an
idea you’ve had
that we haven’t
even got a
name for yet.
You might even
want to plant
RESPONSIVE HYPNOTHERAPY
I think we all sometimes wonder
whether something is worth paying for.
NONE OF US LIKE TO WASTE MONEY. We want to make
sure that we are buying a therapy which will help us 'get better'.
I trained as a nurse in Oxford many years ago and have worked
for many medical companies over the years. 3 years ago, l
discovered the benefits of Responsive Hypnotherapy and l
decided to train as a therapist myself to be able to offer this
marvellous solution to others.
I have seen many for 'lack of confidence' / 'no self-worth'. For
example, the girl with critical exams looming or the stewardess
who suddenly feared going to work, the business man who felt
he could no longer do presentations, the young sportsman who
lost the zest for his game whenever he missed a goal or the
unfaithful lady who felt extremely guilty.
Some come to remove phobias, amongst many; fear of spiders,
dentists or (can you believe it) mash potato.
I have seen several for anger-management. For example, the
temper-tantrum dad and the shy lady who did her best to put
people off asking her any questions.
It is great helping people get rid of their bad habits; such as
the nurse who drank 4 liters of fizzy drink a day, the mum who
sucks her thumb or the long term alcoholic easily drinking 24
cans of beer a day.
Nina's Hypnotherapy
RESPONSIVE HYPNOTHERAPY
Fast Effective Permanent
£65 / hour, 2 sessions usually suffice.
Based on science.
Nina Vinther Dip. AdvHyp, Lic. RHyp
40. THE.ZONE (see reviews)
The Zone, 40 Sompting Road, Lancing BN15 9JX
T. 07785 292555 www.ninashypnotherapy.co.uk
BUSINESS FEATURE
With Responsive Hypnotherapy l do not need to 'dig deep'
into sad/scary memories. I do not need to 'open a can worms'
to give therapy. I just need to know the general subject and l
will help the client remove the unwanted emotions connected
to that memory. As long as my clients do their 10-second
homework every day, the 'change' is usually permanent.
Ask yourself this: How much is it worth to you:
• To remove your anxiety or bad habit?
• To feel great about yourself and your abilities?
• To feel stress-free and much more contented
with your life?
• How badly do you want to sort out your stuff?
• Will it make a huge difference to your day...
if the 'bad stuff' has gone?
l will need a minimum of 2 hours to sort out your matter,
though if l am helping with a diet-matter, for example placing
an 'imaginary gastric band', then it will take 3-4 hours and the
price will also be different.
I do offer a free half-hour consultation, for you to decide if
this is the right therapy for you or a family member. n
LARDER
WORTHING
MAKE A DIFFERENCE
Be the change
As a coastal town, we come face to face
with marine pollution on a daily basis. We
asked the people of Worthing what they
were doing to reduce their own carbon
footprint.
HERE ARE SOME OF THE MOST POPULAR and inspiring ideas
they had.
RECYCLING
A UN report last year found 90% of plastic waste has never been
recycled. With bin collections going to every two weeks from 16 Sep,
let’s get waste savvy.
“Do you know what the council can recycle? I’ve just found out West
Sussex is one of the few to accept butter wrappers!” Becca
Check out the full list at adur-worthing.gov.uk/recycling/what-wecan-recycle.
“Once we started collecting our crisp packets for recycling, I was
genuinely horrified at how much we were binning” Tom
Recycling in Lancing take many items that the council can’t recycle,
from asthma inhalers to crisp packets, at local collection points.
Worthing Boys’ Club, Brownies and Scouts and Men in Sheds take
various items to recycle or repurpose, while Worthing Community
Chest run regular pop-up recycling events.
TRAVEL
Most car journeys are under five miles. Scoot to school with the kids,
or cycle to the shops. Hire an orange Donkey Bike in town.
Set up a car share through ecarclub.co.uk or the West Sussex
Carshare Scheme. Make your next car electric.
ENERGY
Change to a green energy
provider using bigcleanswitch.
org. Adur & Worthing Big
Community Switch offers a
collaborative energy buying
club. Community Energy Local
runs a drop-in at St Paul’s every
Wednesday with free energy
advice.
FOOD & DRINK
“I always carry a reusable cup,
shopping bag and water bottle
(use the Refill app to find places
to fill your bottle for free)” Tim
Cut back on meat and
dairy. Try The Artisans’
Pantry or Teba for
vegan supplies, and
check out p18 for
some great vegan
eateries.
TRANSITION
TOWN
WORTHING
Reduce food miles: head to
local farmers’ markets, use seasonal box schemes like Wayside
Organics, A Share of the Crop or Happy Hens, or pick your own at
Roundstone.
“Say no to disposable cutlery, plates, straws and stirrers” Sarah
Ditch plastic by using stores offering zero packaging and refill
options, like Larder, Ceres or Streets Cafe. Switch to glass milk
bottles with Milk & More or the deposit schemes at Teba and West
Station News. Use greengrocers (Pixies or Sussex Produce Co in
Goring), butchers (Guildbourne Meats or WD Hunt in Broadwater)
and fishmongers happy for you to bring your own containers.
Catchbox promotes sustainable fishing by encouraging people to buy
from three local fishermen still working: John Booker, the Marchants
and Mr Jenkins opposite Onslow Court.
Grow your own. Community garden groups work together to grow
fruit and veg to share: look up Transition Town Worthing (TTW),
TCV’s Growing Communities Project, We Are Food Pioneers,
Breathing Spaces and Creative Waves. For a larger-scale project, get
involved with Sustainable Sussex in setting up Sompting Community
Farm.
Forage (sustainably) for blackberries, mushrooms and sloes this mont;
join Foraged by Fern’s local hunts to learn what’s out there.
“Keep a food diary for a week to work out your household’s food
waste. Planning ahead, cooking in bulk and freezing meals is better
than chucking away leftovers” Emma
Everything from foods scraps to pet poop can be composted (the
latter can’t be used on food crops). If it’s too good to chuck, local
initiatives like The Community House, Worthing Soup Kitchen and
The Empty Plate Cafe distribute surplus food to those in need. The
Coffee Camp and South by West offer leftover food on social media,
or try food sharing apps like Too Good To Go and Olio to stop food
going to waste.
“I save and freeze vegetable offcuts and cheese rinds to make stock
(in a biodegradable bag)” Serena
Who knew teabags contain plastic? Try out some loose-leaf UKgrown
Tregothnan Tea from South By West. Coffee fan? Coffee
grounds are a great fertiliser; many cafes including Waitrose give
them away for free.
Replace clingfilm with beeswax wraps; Sam at Sussex Forest
Activities runs workshops for £10.
HEALTH & BEAUTY
Use solid deodorants, soap and shampoo and conditioner bars. Check
out Plastic Free Worthing champions Clean Mind Pampering or make
your own.
We use around 300 toothbrushes in our lifetimes. Switch to bamboo
alternatives with plastic-free floss and toothpaste.
Fight the fatbergs with plastic-free sanitary products, such as cloth
pads, period underwear and menstrual cups (the average woman uses
240 tampons a year). Change to sustainable recycled or bamboobased
loo roll and bulk buy to keep costs down.
Pop along to Sussex Cloth Nappy Library’s drop-ins for a reusable
FINANCE CORNER
BUSINESS FEATURE
Getting on the property ladder!
So how hard is it to get onto the property
ladder? The challenge is normally either not
having a deposit and/or not having enough
income to take out the mortgage.
THAT SAID, THERE ARE PLENTY OF WAYS to become a homeowner,
and often a chat with an experienced and independent mortgage
adviser could open up opportunities you may not be aware of.
Deposit - There are plenty of schemes that will allow you to buy
a home with just a 5% deposit (5% of property value). This can be
savings, or a gift from family or a third party. Some grandparents are
even taking lifetime mortgages to give an early inheritance and help
their grandkids get on the property ladder.
Buy vs Rent - The crazy fact is that, for most, it’s cheaper to pay a
mortgage each month than rent your home. Often, the reason people
can’t buy is down to lenders not willing to lend enough. There are ways
of boosting this. Buying with others boosts income, and two friends
buying together to get on the property ladder can be a good stepping
stone to owning on your own.
Some lenders will lend more if you have a guarantor. This is where
another person, normally a family member, guarantees the mortgage
will be paid. This can be a short-term arrangement, and normally they
wouldn’t be on the property deeds.
Help to Buy schemes can enable first time buyers to buy 75% of the
property, meaning they don’t require such a large mortgage so they can
afford to buy. They can purchase the remaining 25% when their income
increases over time.
Lastly, Shared Ownership schemes are available to some. A housing
association will sell a share in the property and rent you the remainder.
You can buy much smaller percentages
and, over time, purchase additional
chunks of the property.
This is a snapshot of the options
available. If you are serious about getting
on the property ladder but aren’t sure
how to do it, pop in to see one of our
expert mortgage advisers and we will
be happy to explain your options and a
route to property ownership.
WHERE TO EAT & DRINK
Go nuts for the environment
With a recent UN report highlighting
that switching to a plant-based diet can
help fight climate change, Here & Now
thought it was time we checked out some
of the incredible vegan restaurants on our
doorsteps in Worthing.
WORTHING’S FIRST VEGAN EATERY Cactus Kitchen Gals sells
breakfast, lunch and dinner options with local produce and an
ever-changing specials board. Kids get in on the act with their own
menu, plus there are workshops, set menu nights and a private
order service for birthday cakes.
NRG Cavern prides itself on a menu focused on balanced
nutrition, and you can take your pick from vegan croissants
for breakfast, rainbow falafel sandwiches, Buddha bowls and
much more. There’s a regular supper club, a kids menu and the
smoothies are irresistible!
Down on Montague Place, Wine & Reason sells vegan food from
Sunny Worthing award-winners Vbab including vegan kebabs,
katsu curry and vegan fish and chips. There’s a takeaway option for
those who fancy nipping down to the beach. Don’t miss the triple
cooked chips!
Nestled opposite the main library, The Happy Teapot has a vegan
menu with versions of meat dishes such as burgers, nachos and
tofu dogs, but it’s the extensive range of mouthwatering vegan
cakes and milkshakes to die for that will keep you coming back
again and again.
Scoot up the alley next to Superdrug and you’ll find The Artisan’s
Pantry on Field Row serving incredible homemade vegan food,
from cottage pie to tasty fry-ups. They also stock a range of hardto-find
vegan products including Vegusto alternative cheese,
Love Seitan, Follow Your Heart, Suma Coop, KamAlive Chocolate,
cupboard items and vegan skincare.
Streets Cafe on Tarring Road has a great array of vegan and
gluten-free options. Keep an eye on the Facebook page for popups
from the likes of Halloumilicious and 2 Blokes and a Kitchen,
plus there’s soft play, a great range of cosmetics, groceries and
cleaning products to buy and even a vegan Mr Whippy!
There are many other great vegan options all over town including
Bungaroosh, Finch, The Egremont, Malt, The Orchard Cafe, Munch
and Pizzaface to name just a few.
If all this talk has left you feeling inspired to try out a plant-based
diet, head over to Teba on South Street where you can pick up an
extensive range of international foods and vegan meat, cheese and
dairy substitutes. n
ARTS & LITERATURE
Lighting
the way
Returning for its third year,
Worthing Light Festival
(13-15 Sep) is a stunning
48-hour display of
sustainable art installations
lit by renewable energy
sources on Worthing Beach.
OFTEN THOUGHT-PROVOKING, it is
run by the East Beach Artists Collective, a
not-for-profit group of over 25 artists, with
sponsorship from Worthing Community
Chest, Sussex Community Foundation,
Rampion Offshore Wind Farm and the Arts
Council England.
“The message is beautiful art, renewable
energy, and a lot of the sculptures are made
from bits and pieces that have been used
again, so it’s very much about recycling
and protecting the planet,” explains festival
organiser and local artist Jessica Gill. “We
want to inspire people to look into their
artistic side and contribute back into our
community.”
All art installations only use
renewable energy or a 12V
battery. Many of the exhibitors
and artists involved are known for
exploring sustainability in their work,
from beachcombing, foraging and hunting
through bric-a-brac sales for reclaimed
materials and inspiration. Last year’s winner
Roy Kelf created a polar bear from recycled
plastic milk bottles.
Local community arts organisation Creative
Waves will create an interactive light art
‘space’ on the beach for children and the
young at heart, while Ben Gates will bring
his orchestral objects made from recycled
materials to the beach for kids to play on and
create music.
Circus and fire arts performers Poi Passion
will deliver spectacular LED light dance
shows emerging from the sea on Friday and
Saturday evening, and there will be music
including classical, tango, steel band and
ambient folktronica throughout Friday and
Saturday. The exhibition is open to all day
and night for free and starts to close Sunday
midday. More info worthinglightfestival.
co.uk.
Down the road in Shoreham, literary
festival Wordfest opens this month (7
Sep – 13 Oct) with the topical theme
‘Shaping the Future’. Events will be
exploring what lies ahead and how
we can help to shape it, with speakers
including Stanley Johnson outlining
efforts to protect ecological diversity, author
John Higgs discussing his book on 21stcentury
living The Future Starts Here, and
a whole weekend of debate and discussion
on climate change opened by Peter Owen-
Jones.
Alongside plenty of literary offerings, there
will be talks on subjects such as the local tidal
estuary, the chalk landscape of the Downs,
our relationship with the sea and the status
of Shoreham Port as the UK’s first ECO
Port. Young people can get involved with a
workshop where they can challenge decision
makers and develop projects to protect the
environment (Sun 6 Oct), and there are many
other readings, workshops and events to
enjoy. More info shorehamwordfest.com n
Worthing Theatre Trail
Back with a bang for their second year, Worthing Theatre
Trail hits various venues around town for two weekends this
September (21-22 & 28-29 Sep).
IT ALL STARTED WITH LOCAL COUPLE Gary and Sue Krost, who wanted to promote local talent
and bring it to a number of different locations for free.
“With venues generously donating performance space, acts can afford to put their show on without
having to charge entrance fees,” explains Sue. “The talent can be any age, shape or size. The writers
and performers are encouraged to produce original or new versions of existing pieces, and people get
to experience theatre without it costing them a thing.”
Now with an expanded team and funding from Adur and Worthing Trust, plus Indigo restaurant and
Spark Foods, the Trail comes to eight venues, with 13 acts and over 40 performances. Performances
range from one man shows to ensemble pieces, storytelling to sketches, intense drama to lighthearted
comedy. No booking required as all performances are free. More info on Facebook or
The pros and conns
of Silas Marner
As we move past the
summer, we are looking
towards a new season of
incredible entertainment
in Worthing.
WITH FANTASTIC LIVE THEATRE, music, comedy and so much
more, make sure you grab a copy of our new season brochure, which is
full of events at your fingertips!
To start off, we are very excited that the incredibly talented Worthingbased
Conn Artists Theatre Company are returning to the Connaught
Theatre from Thursday 26 to Saturday 28 September with their new
adaptation of George Eliot’s Victorian classic Silas Marner.
This world premiere follows on from their hugely successful production
of The Four Men in 2017, an adaptation of writer Hilaire Belloc’s
account of his comical yet poignant adventures as he rambled across
the Sussex Downs. That show marked the company’s first ever regional
tour, while this new production sees them travel nationwide after the
opening in Worthing.
A timeless novel by one of the leading female writers of the Victorian
era, Silas Marner is the heart-warming story of a poor weaver,
wrongfully outcast from society and forced to take in a young orphan.
Their mutual friendship leads to joy, love and his redemption.
As the associate theatre company at the Connaught Theatre, the
not-for-profit Conn Artists Theatre Company aims to produce high
quality theatre that is vital and illuminating for the local community
and beyond. They champion quality live drama in Worthing, providing
opportunities for local artists to perform and productions to inspire
students and young people with an interest in theatre in the local area.
Come along and support this talented local professional theatre
company in what promises to be an enthralling experience.
Silas Marner is produced in association with Worthing Theatres and The
George Eliot Fellowship. Tickets are available from worthingtheatres.
Listening Party: Primate by Grenades
Flames lick from Primate, the debut album
by Grenades.
YOU CAN FEEL THE HEAT RISING from the surface riffs that
hem you in from the very first intro track. Like walls of fire, it is a
claustrophobic, righteous, meticulously crafted album that takes
you, blindfolds you, then bundles you into the boot of a car –
and you're happy to go.
Rapture is the penultimate track and by the time you get there
you feel it coming on. As lead singer Django Black sings, 'Our
flesh is edible, the truth is we're animals.' You have let the earth
rise around you; you have let yourself sink into the earth as the
skeletal tendrils of the music curl over you. Take them in. It's all
important. This is important.
Hugely, highly recommended. n Joe Bunn
THOMAS H GREEN - MUSICAL TIME MACHINE
Back in the mid-
1960s, if you’d
popped into The
Dragoon pub for a
pint (Market Street,
demolished at the
start of the 70s
to make way for
the Guildbourne
Centre), you might
have tapped a toe
to the band there.
JED ARMSTRONG, ON
DRUMS, was at the beginning
of a career that would crisscross
the globe, although he
little knew it then.
“I wanted to see the world,” he
says wistfully. “I used to sit out
by the bandstand in Worthing,
looking at the moonlight hitting
the waves at night, wondering
whether I’d ever be able to see
what was at the end of these
vast oceans.”
Born in Surrey in 1942,
Armstrong’s family moved to
Worthing as his father’s London antique business
slumped during World War II. While his dad rose to
become the top carpet salesman in Bentalls (now
Beales), Jed developed a fascination with skiffle. His
grandmother bought him a snare drum and he built up
his own kit from there, briefly playing with Worthing
outfit The Faraways.
He lived in London in 1962 and became friendly with
Chris Karan, drummer with the Dudley Moore Trio. He
recalls great times at Peter Cook’s club The
Establishment, but soon
moved back
to Worthing.
Not long
afterwards
he hooked
up with the
Worthing Swing
Orchestra,
where he met
keyboard player
Keith Emerson
(later of Emerson, Lake & Palmer). Also in that band
was bassist Godfrey Sheppard, who, together with
guitarist John Greenwood, would form a trio with
Jed, becoming residents at Brighton’s Harrisons Bar
in the mid-60s. Keith Emerson would sit in with them.
“He was very shy then, I used to egg him,” recalls Jed,
“but he also had this extrovert side, a way of making
people listen to him. He was a wonderful jazz pianist;
he could sight read beautifully and had wonderful
imagination and spirit.”
JED (LEFT) ON
HIS FIRST CRUISE
SHIP JOB IN 1971
During this period Jed played with names such as Ronnie Scott, Tubby
Hayes, Don Weller and Bobby Wellings. He was starting to earn a living
from music, working, amongst other things, on the BBC police drama
Softly, Softly. But it was two separate nights of drinking that earned Jed
a footnote in pop history.
career, meanwhile, also took off. In 1971 he joined
the Ray Markham Band for a Norwegian Caribbean
Lines cruise. Jed enjoyed the experience but
reckoned the organization lax and decided to cut
out on his own. Leading the Jed Armstrong Quartet,
he spent the next five years touring the world on
cruise ships, from Australia to America, Japan to
the Mediterranean. It was a dream come true.
“I absolutely loved it,” he says gleefully. “Musicians
were called ‘leading hands’, at the bottom of the
officer rankings. A 25,000 tonner would have a solo piano, a trio and a
quartet who shared duties at different times, and there were cabarets to
be backed too. I couldn’t believe I was seeing the world like this; it was
just fantastic.”
While Jed revelled in the happy times, it was not all plain sailing.
The first was with Rod Stewart in a Muswell Hill pub in 1969. Stewart, at
that point, had a solid reputation but hadn’t made it. He’d recently signed
to Mercury Records as a solo artist but was scrabbling around for songs.
As the evening boozily progressed at Stewart’s bungalow, Jed related
how his pal Martin Quittenton, of the band Steamhammer, was writing
some tasty songs.
“I told Martin afterwards,” says Jed, “but he wouldn’t ring Rod, so I took
him out drinking at the Central Hotel’s cellar bar by the station [now the
Grand Victorian]. Martin absolutely adored these Gold Labels [strong
barley wine], so I ordered four of them, which was expensive then.
Eventually I said, ‘Are you going to ring Rod now or what?’ I got him up
to the telephone box, pushed him in, and put my back to the door so he
couldn’t get out. He came out a bit dazed and said, ‘He wants me to go
up on Tuesday.’ He stayed at Rod’s bungalow for a week…”
The result was that Quittenton ended up playing on Stewart’s first four
albums and co-writing Maggie May, You Wear It Well and others. Jed’s
“My worst trip was on the Blenheim with Fred Olsen Lines,” he
remembers. “There was a storm on the Bay of Biscay, so dreadful,
pitching into the waves all the time, all the shops were smashed up, the
catering crew were trying to get into the lifeboats, people thought they’d
had it. I staggered down to the dining hall and there were people with
cut heads, bruised, bashed about, but the piano was strapped down, the
pianist playing, and the English passengers were all singing On Mother
Kelly’s Doorstep.”
After the cruise years, Jed formed a pop covers band called Wave who
became one of the first such acts to play Dubai. They built a career in
the Middle East and were playing La Boheme Club in Tehran when the
Iranian Revolution hit in 1978. Jed had to get his band and their money
out amid the mayhem.
“The doors of the place were always getting burnt down,” he recalls, “and
eventually they were replaced with iron doors; you could hear guns at
night. I spoke to this guy who had a marvellous dance troupe – Debbie
McGee was in it – and he said, ‘Don’t worry about it, it’ll die down, I’ve
seen loads of these things.’ But it really didn’t die down, did it?”
Jed continued to work as a drummer as the 70s turned into the 80s,
touring Germany with the Pete Moss Big Band, going to the States with
comedy quartet The Mutton Chop Band – with whom he lived in a log
cabin in Colorado’s Rocky Mountains – and working with Scottish singer
Robin Mather in a keyboard’n’drums duo, but increasingly, now with a
young family, he preferred working closer to home.
JED (FRONT) WITH THE MUTTON CHOP BAND IN COLORADO
While he maintained a lifelong
friendship with Keith Emerson, who
died in 2016, Jed moved out of music
at the start of the 90s, setting up
a successful antique shop, Elijah’s
in Arundel. However, he can still
sometimes be found supporting
his old pal Godfrey Sheppard at
Worthing Jazz Society’s nights at the
Hare and Hounds pub. n
SPORT & WELLBEING
Get fit for the future
We often think of sport and
wellbeing as going hand in hand,
but is it possible to get fitter and
go greener at the same time?
Park and ride
WALKING, RUNNING AND CYCLING are not
only great ways to reduce your carbon footprint
but also to burn fat and keep your heart healthy.
Cycling your commute is a great way to cut your
emissions, with many local businesses running bike
to work schemes. If that’s not an option for you,
use pedal power to run errands, with hire options
like the Donkey Bike scheme available year round
in the town centre.
Obviously, the better you look after your bike, the longer it will
last and the less waste you’ll produce. If your cycle needs a
spot of maintenance, head over to one of the local community
workshops in Durrington and Lancing, where they will help you
without charge (donations welcome). They also lend out and sell
secondhand bikes, which saves them from landfill and is better
then buying new.
Don’t forget that old bike tyres and inner tubes can be reused;
community group Men in Sheds collect these for recycling as
well as crafting new items such as woven doormats.
Revive your community spirit
THE GOOD GYM combines getting fitter with helping others,
whether it’s running to someone’s house and helping them
put up some shelves, sorting cans for the food bank, or
visiting someone who’s lonely. They run weekly sessions from
Splashpoint at 6pm on Mondays. Membership is a voluntary
£9.95 per month; sign up at
Green Gym follows a similar
concept, although it usually involves
a gentler warm-up and cool down
routine alongside activities such as
planting trees, sowing meadows and
establishing wildlife ponds. All sessions
are fun and free; nearby locations
include Portslade and Northbrook. Find
out more at tcv.org.uk.
Other local activities include Worthing
Plogging, a regular meet-up organised
by the local Green Party, which
encourages participants to pick up litter
at Manor Sports Ground whilst walking
GOODGYM WITH CREATIVE WAVES
or running for 5k. If groups aren’t your thing, don’t forget simple
actions such as beach cleans can easily be combined with a
stroll, dog walk or even activities out on the water such as
paddleboarding.
your local health club to make some changes? There’s a lot that
they can do; look no further than South Downs Leisure, which
was one of the first declared Plastic Free Worthing Champions.
The company has made a number of sustainable changes at
its centres, including using solar panels, a ground source heat
pump, reclaimed water and reduced flushes for toilets, as
well as installing beehives at both Splashpoint and Worthing
Leisure Centre and bee-friendly planting at Field Place. There
are recycling stations at all sites, and the centres sell refillable
cups, defaulting to china wherever possible, have banned plastic
straws and use locally grown produce.
Similarly, Henry House on Heene Road won the Worthing
Green Business Award thanks to initiatives such as a rainwater
harvesting system which treats and filters water collected
from the roof for use in the pool, a grey water flush system
for the toilets and solar thermal panels to heat the pool, sinks
and showers, to name just a few. Owner Karen Simporis even
installed a bike rack back in 2009 and gave everyone who
cycled to the centre a free fairtrade banana!
Use a refillable water bottle
SINGLE-USE PLASTIC is one of the biggest offenders when it
comes to sports pollution. There’s no excuse not to be using a
refillable water bottle these days, and better still while you’re
out jogging you can make use of more than 50 locations around
Worthing which offer free refills (@RefillWorthing or download
the app). n
JOE BUNN’S BARDIC TRIALS
GENERAL LISTINGS
Marvel with me
“Let's put Worthing back on the map.”
THAT'S WHAT THEY SAY, ISN'T IT? Those people who think they're
doing something splendid for the town. Back on the map. Like it fell off
Google because the people of Worthing played too much bowls. Here's a
thought for you: what if, like in America, Worthing is in the centre of the
map? What if I told you that we could become as rich and powerful as an
American film studio?
It's really quite simple: we just invent the Worthing Cinematic Universe.
Like the Marvel one, only Worthing.
We've got the sets. Worthing is awash with buildings that could pass for
shady government facilities, and I'm not even talking about the actual
ones. There's the building near Lidl that looks like there are robots being
built within its walls. What is the Dome Cinema if not the base for an
elect group of Heroes? And that new Worthing Observation Wheel: I
mean, there's got to be a plot involving that somewhere, a plan to make it
spin so fast that everyone gets really dizzy.
Next up, we need a villain, some horrible treacherous fiend who
threatens to rebuild Teville Gate whilst maniacally laughing. Some evil
eyebrowed monster who wants to replace our sandy beaches with stony
ones.
And a hero, someone with a cape that flows like the waves on the sea.
A Captain Worthing, if you will. Someone to punch seagulls right out the
sky before they swoop down and eat your chips.
It's time, again, to turn to you, to come up with the inhabitants of this
Cinematic Universe.
Who would be the superheroes? Who would be the villains? And what
stories would you include?
Draw me some concept art, pitch me a storyline, film me a film. I mean, if
you want to, I'm not your boss.
Remember what I said about maps? Putting Worthing back on the map?
What with the internet, and smart phones making maps irrelevant, why
do we even need to be on the map at all? Maps are boring. Why don't we
put Worthing in the pictures instead? n
#WORTHINGWORKS
Interview: Andrew Wilday, Salvage Sounds
Exhibition at
Sustainability is the theme at Here & Now
for September, which coincides with a
beautiful and fascinating pop-up musical
instrument shop at Colonnade House by a
unique Worthing business.
HERE & NOW SPOKE TO ANDREW AT
SALVAGE SOUNDS about their family-run
“alternative luthier” business, specialising in
the creation of non-conventional stringed
instruments using re-purposed parts and
upcycled materials.
Andrew can take an old cigar box, empty
coffee tins, the registration plate of a longscrapped
vehicle or a wooden pencil case, then
design and craft quirky but fully functioning
musical art pieces in their own right. “For
some, it’s wall art first and musical instrument
second,” says Andrew, “but it is funny that
everybody seems to mention how they have
hung it somewhere they can easily pick it up
and start playing. Accessibility is what it is all
about: accessible instruments at an accessible
price point. Getting people playing music
and involved with the pieces is always more
important to me than profit.”
So Andrew, why Worthing?
Does being here bring any
advantages?
Like many, I moved to Worthing in adult life as
an outsider, with no particular preconception
of the area, and immediately felt at home. In
the last few years things have really kicked on a
level with so many good things happening like
the Creative Hub at Colonnade House or the amazing facilities at
Durrington Northbrook MET campus, and Here & Now mag - for
its celebration of Worthing culture and life in the town. And, in a
town which is a calmer, less intense version of its more famous
coastal compatriot, a business like Salvage Sounds has a better
chance of being noticed, standing out from
the noise and creative saturation.
Colonnade House,
3-8 Sep
Check out Insta
salvagesounds or
salvagesounds co.uk
How do you connect into
business locally?
Our creations have reached eight or nine
different nations across the world that
we know of, but nothing brings greater
pleasure than doing business locally and
connecting with the community. Our
strategy is based around an annual one week pop-up shop at
Colonnade House (our third is coming up from 3-8 Sep), when
instruments on display are sold and new orders taken. We’ve
collaborated a couple of times with Northbrook MET (most
recently S’Kool Fest 2019) and I’m looking forward to being
involved in Green Dreams this year.
In terms of networking structures for creative businesses,
there’s no shortage of options. Barry Williams at the West End
Gallery (who also has a focus on recycled materials in his work)
runs a monthly Artists’ Breakfast, and there are groups like
Beyond Brighton or Freedom Works. For us the events put on
by Colonnade House have been excellent. I even met our new
primary supplier of coffee cans at one event, for use in our Canjo
bestseller!
There’s a rise of the 5-9pm businesses, people
setting up something in addition to their full
time job. Do you have any advice for people
looking to turn their love of something into a
business?
5-9 plus overtime! It does need to be something you love and feel
absolutely passionate about. Keep that in mind and remember
the real reasons for doing what you do, rather than becoming preoccupied
with return on investment. Thinking of the business as a
hobby first and business second can get you through tough times;
you might gladly pay good money to feel as happy and challenged
as you do. A very understanding family also helps!
How has starting this
business changed
your outlook?
We find we now look at the world
differently and often catch ourselves
scouring the edges of pavements
for discarded nuts, bolts, screws and
bottle-caps that might be incorporated
into one of our creations, or looking
in the window of every charity shop
for wooden boxes that may have the
chance to become reborn as a ukulele! n
