evenings, this is such a wonderful time of year, and the perfect

Our What’s On Where pages will help you fill your calendar to 

keep the kids busy. We’ve got a huge range of events listed, many 

of which are free or low cost, meaning it’s even easier to plan the 

kids’ activities over the long summer break. We’ve got everything 

from The Great British Food Festival to Rye Meadlings. Make sure

Ingredients 

• 6 Asparagus Spears 

• 8 Cherry tomatoes, halved 

• 8 Snow Peas, topped, tailed 

and halved 

• 1/2 Bell Pepper, Cut into thin 

strips 

• 1/2 tbsp Olive Oil 

• 1 Sheet (166g) Puff Pastry 

• 2 tsp Pesto 

• 20g Mozzarella cut into pieces 

Instructions 

• Pre heat oven to 200C / 390F 

• Cut the asparagus spears into 

3cm pieces, discarding the end 

3cm. Place in a mixing bowl along 

with the tomatoes, snow peas and 

capsicum. Toss in the olive oil. 

• Place the prepared vegetables 

onto a baking tray and spread. 

Bake for 10 mins. Remove from 

oven and set aside. 


Puff Pastry 

Tarts 

These Puff Pastry Tarts taste amazing and are a great way to expose 

children to a range of vegetables. A flexible recipe that is easy to adapt 

to suit taste or to the ingredients you have available. 

• Cut the pastry sheet into four 

equal squares and then place 

on a baking tray, leaving a space 

between each. 

• Using a small knife score 

(making sure not to cut all the 

way through the pastry) the edges 

to create a border approx 1-2cm 

in from the edge (picture shown in 

above post) 

• Using the back of a spoon, 

spread the centre of each square 

with pesto, staying within the 

score lines 

• Pile a little of the vegetable 

mixture onto each pesto 

covered tart 

• Divide the mozzarella equally 

between each tart. 

• Bake for 15-20 mins until the 

pastry is golden and crispy and 

the cheese has melted.

Professor Brian Cox 

Primary Times teams up with Professor Brian Cox OBE to discuss the importance of science for children, his 

own childhood inspirations, and his exciting world tour ‘Universal: Adventures in Space and Time’ 

How did you first become 

interested in physics and 

astronomy? Was there a 

book or famous figure who 

sparked your passion? 

I was always interested in astronomy as far 

back as I remember, and I think the reason 

for that is it’s the simplest science. You can 

do it without anything, you can go out into 

your back garden and look at the stars, you 

can see the constellations change from 

month to month, you can see the planets 

shift into position. 

In terms of a famous figure, there was Carl 

Sagan who made his series Cosmos when I 

was 11. It was this idea that these points of 

light in the sky are other worlds. The great 

thing about astronomy is that it carries 

your imagination away and you will never 

learn everything there is to learn 

about the universe. 

Our aim is to get the 

nation’s children inspired 

by science. For you, why 

is it important for children 

to take an interest? 

Science is above all else a way of 

thinking, it’s a way of celebrating curiosity. 

The central idea is that we don’t know 

everything. It’s often easy to be afraid of 

not knowing, when actually it’s the most 

exciting thing, because then you can go 

and find out. You might be the person 

who finds out for the first time whether 

there is life on Mars. I think that science 

teaches us to think, nature forces us to 

think in a particular way, and that’s the key 

educational value of science. 

What advice would you 

give to children who are 

aspiring to work in science? 

I would say stay excited and stay curious. 

Understand that if you want to be a scientist 

you can be. It’s easy to think you have to be 

a strange genius to be a scientist. There’s a 

really famous story about Einstein going into 

a school and saying “When I was your age, 

I was no Einstein”. 

Can you tell us a little bit more 

about your upcoming world 

tour ‘Universal: Adventures 

in Space and Time’? 

At one level it is huge, high-resolution 

screens showing these amazing pictures 

from the Hubble Space Telescope. But 

also, we simulated a black hole. We 

used the techniques that were used to 

develop the film Interstellar to simulate 

what it would be like to go and fly up to, 

orbit and dive into a black hole, and what 

we know about what happens. So, it is I 

hope a spectacular experience that’s also 

designed to make us think about our place 

in the universe. 

What top tips could you give 

to parents who are trying to 

introduce science into their 

home for their children? 

Science is about doing science ultimately. 

You get excited about science by doing it, 

and that’s why I think astronomy is great. 

You can get one of those apps on your 

phone that show you what the stars are, 

you’d be surprised by how easy it is to 

recognise what that is in the sky. And I 

believe that’s what it is to deliver a little bit 

of wonder to your children. I can’t think of 

anything that’s easier and more rewarding 

than just that.

Say Cheese! 

Summer is here, you catch your kids in the perfect moment and 

you rush to retrieve your camera, but then they see the camera and 

start posing, and the moments lost. What do you do? Dylan and 

Zee are creative outdoor photographers who have compiled their 

top tips on how to up your photography game with little ones: 

• Be sure that your child is well-rested and happy! Don’t 

photograph them when it’s a good time for you, photograph them 

when it’s a good time for them. 

• No cheese or sausages! Unless you want the stinky “Cheese” pics 

where the kids look like a strangely happy deer in headlights, you 

will want to be capturing your child’s natural joyful expressions. 

• Clothing shouldn’t be distracting. Lean towards simple clothes, 

soft tones that don’t take the attention away from your child. 

• If you want to capture the world from their perspective, be 

prepared to get down and dirty. 

• Be patient, when things aren’t working, laugh and keep shooting. 

Eventually that tide is going to roll, and you’ll be prepare. Children 

have a shoot limit of 15-20 minutes. Make the most of their capacity 

and know when to stop and be present! 

• Explore the outdoors and natural lighting. Hertfordshire has 

so much to offer, there are hidden gems on the fringes of every 

town! Take a stroll off the beaten path and discover rolling fields, 

wild flowers, and dewy forests. Nature often brings out a natural 

curiosity and calmness in children. Use that! 

• Still family portraits are great, but really magical photos are often 

the product of spontaneity. Use the environment around you to 

create action. Get your child having fun thrashing about in dry 

leaves, picking flowers, blowing dandelions, or making daisy chains.

A Day at the 

Museum 

With six weeks of summer holidays on the horizon, it’s a 

wonderful time to visit a museum with the kids. Supporting our 

museums will ensure we keep these not-for-profit, educational, 

and inspirational institutions around for years to come. 

Experiences such as visiting a museum, gallery or site can be a 

meaningful and memorable low cost part of the summer holiday, 

and it’s a fact that people are happier with experiences rather 

than material purchases. You will be sure to have a great time 

and give your children a valuable introduction to culture.

You won’t have to travel far to find one wherever 

you are in the country. 

Get the kids involved 

Let them do some research and choose a museum, and maybe 

even prepare a picnic.

Terrific Tuesday Fun 

Every Tuesday in Bucks School 

holidays is a Terrific Tuesday at 

Chiltern Open Air Museum. These 

are themed craft and activity 

days organised by the Museum’s 

Learning Team. The themes over 

the summer months are on the 

elements: earth, air, fire, water 

and element of surprise. Activities 

include pond dipping, glass painting, 

clay pot making, bubble painting, 

storytelling, build your own bug 

crafts and lots more. Each week 

has completely different activities 

and all activities are included within

The centre for Welwyn Hatfield's 

history is Mill Green Museum. With

Arts Holiday Workshops

What is Children’s 

Occupational 

Therapy (OT)? 

People always say to me “you’re so lucky you love your job” 

Yes, they’re right I do, but I wonder if they actually know what the 

job of an Occupational Therapist entails? 

After qualifying in 2003 I thought that surely by 2019 OT 

would be as well-known as Physiotherapy, but unfortunately 

here in the UK it isn’t. Well I am going to explain the real benefits 

of an Occupational Therapist and how OT can really improve the 

quality of life for a child. 

Everyone has occupations and for children theirs are playing, going 

to school, socialising, getting dressed and eating their food etc. 

Sometimes for various reasons children cannot function as they 

want to in their occupations, whether it be due to physical, sensory 

or cognitive reasons. An Occupational Therapist assesses why 

the child cannot function in the activity and establishes the 

underlying reasons for this. 

I at Superstars Therapy see children in their home and school 

environment. When an occupational therapist sees a child in his/ 

her natural environment, there is an opportunity to observe first 

hand any functional challenges that the child might face on a 

daily basis. Working in the home or school also allows parents and 

teachers the chance to be 'hands-on' in the therapy processes 

which is more beneficial for the child. 

Occupational Therapist’s will assess children depending on the 

area of difficulty. This can include an assessment of the child’s 

play (turn taking, sharing, socialising, messy play tolerance), fine 

motor (hand strength, handwriting, using a knife and fork), gross 

motor (balance, catching ability, body awareness, sitting posture), 

sensory processing (attention, tolerance to noise and touch, 

sensory seeking behaviours, fussy eating), visual perceptual 

(letter formation, copying from the board, colour discrimination) 

and independence in self-care skills (dressing, bottom wiping, 

awareness of hygiene, drinking from an open cup). 

Once we have established the underlying reasons why the child 

cannot function as well as they could in their occupations, the 

intervention includes fun creative activities and individualised 

advice programmes to help the child maximise their potential and 

thrive in their occupations! 

And develop their SUPERPOWERS! 

Occupational Therapists can work across a number of 

different areas but what we share is our love for our job, our 

values and our desire to improve the quality of life for people 

whatever their age or ability.

why we dig it! 

Sequencing, developing chronological conceptual frameworks and spotting clues, 

Primary Times explores how the puzzle of the past enriches primary education 

Reading about people in the past 

can be a dry and dusty affair and for 

primary aged children, it can be limited 

by their reading ages and abilities. Yet, 

experiencing a real Roman building 

or handling original artefacts is an 

amazing tactile experience that 

brings the past into direct and 

immediate focus. 

For primary school aged children this 

concrete tactile experience helps to 

build their conceptual understanding 

of how people lived in the past 

and makes the distant past more 

accessible. It also helps to build a 

sense of time, or chronology. We all 

know that some young children under 

the age of seven think that dinosaurs 

roamed the earth at the same time 

that their grandparents were born! 

Children under seven have not yet 

fully developed their chronological 

conceptual frameworks. Exposure 

to archaeology, (buildings, objects 

and digs), at an early age can help 

to develop this critically important 

concept of time through tangible, 

hands on activity. 

Part of the work of archaeologists is 

interpreting the objects that they have 

found, some of which are too fragile to 

be handled. Therefore, experimental 

archaeologists often make replicas or 

reconstructions in order to understand 

how these objects worked. Wearing 

a replica mail shirt, for instance, is an 

immersive and experiential activity for 

adults and children alike and enhances 

our understanding of how people felt 

wearing armour, and walking into a 

reconstructed Iron Age house can be 

an awe-inspiring experience, which 

helps children to imagine the living 

environments of prehistoric peoples. 

These memorable encounters bring 

the distant past to life and help to 

engage and maintain children’s 

interest in their school studies. 

Archaeology is also about discovering 

past landscapes, where people lived 

and worked. It provides opportunities 

for children to explore their local 

area, even their own back gardens, 

to reveal clues about the people 

who once resided there. It enables 

children to develop a sense of place 

and community through time and 

adds meaning to their immediate 

surroundings. 

Being an archaeologist also means 

being a detective, and children 

love puzzles. Sequencing objects in 

order of time is an activity that can 

be undertaken at home but working 

with archaeological objects is a very 

different experience. Categorising or 

grouping objects such as pottery by 

typology, or the type of shape, and/ 

or decoration, is a skill that not only 

contributes to historical understanding 

but is also a basic building block of 

mathematical understanding. 

Finding and interpreting objects 

is one step in the archaeological 

process. Objects need context if 

they are to be fully understood. An 

archaeologist needs to use many 

skills in archaeological excavation 

and survey work. For example, when 

archaeologists dig a site they do 

not always know exactly what they 

are going to find, and they need to 

carefully record each stage of the 

dig by using context sheets, drawing 

buildings and taking photographs. 

Later when the dig is finished, they 

will analyse all the evidence to draw 

conclusions about what they have 

found. This process is like one huge 

puzzle with lots of different clues. 

Giving a child the chance to access 

archaeology in school and at home can 

open a whole new world of discovery, 

supporting both formal and informal 

learning in a range of subjects. The 

summer holidays are an ideal time 

for exploring archaeology and this 

summer the Festival of Archaeology 

offers a variety of exciting experiences 

from 13-28 July. Why not visit the

the core of the 

Summer holidays 

There are those of us who look forward with 

unadulterated joy to the Summer holidays. 

And there are those of us who don’t. Our little 

darlings are free from the confines of school 

for six weeks. Six weeks can seem like a very 

long time – but it goes all too quickly. 

And how do you prevent your child’s reading 

sliding backwards over the holidays? 

Ensuring that their reading momentum is 

maintained ready for the next academic 

year is essential. Are there ways you can 

encourage and inspire your child to keep 

reading? Maintaining your reading time with 

them is a must. What about reading a book in 

bed with them in the morning? 

An excellent way to encourage reading is 

the Summer Reading Challenge. This takes 

place every year during the summer holidays 

- sign up your child at your local library. They 

then read six library books of their choice to 

complete the Challenge. There are rewards 

every time a book is finished and a certificate 

for everyone who completes the challenge.

Another idea is to read with your child a 

book whose plot is set near where you live 

and then to visit that location, bringing the 

book to life. In London there are many, many 

places central to the plots of children’s 

books of all ages. For example, a visit to 

Kensington Gardens links to ‘Peter Pan’ by 

J M Barrie and then you could go on to see 

Kensington Palace where Queen Victoria was 

born and spent her childhood. Lucy Worsley 

has written a book about this time called, 

‘My Name is Victoria’, which tells the story of 

Victoria Conroy, childhood companion to the 

young Princess Victoria. 

A visit to the London Eye could be combined 

with reading Siobhan Dowd’s ‘The London 

Eye Mystery’. It’s worth a visit to Paddington 

Station to see where author Michael Bond’s 

Paddington Bear arrived. Also, for fans of the 

Harry Potter books by J K Rowling, why not 

visit Platform 9 ¾ at King’s Cross? 

To ring the changes, museums and galleries, 

such as the Victoria and Albert, Natural 

History, Science museums and the National 

Portrait Gallery run events throughout the 

summer which will appeal to all ages. 

There are also many day summer camps 

offered for children which are a boon for 

those parents who are at home and for 

those who are not. There are many on offer 

throughout London offering a variety of 

activities and challenges and these are well 

worth exploring. 

But maintaining your child’s reading 

throughout the holidays a must. Children 

have a golden gift which comes naturally, 

imagination. And books nourish that 

imagination, reaping benefits that 

last for ever.

school to Secondary school 

Reducing nerves and anxiety, developing 

wellbeing, confidence and self-esteem 

The Secondary Transfer process 

is the transition from the comfort of a child’s Primary school to 

“big” school. This transition can be daunting and scary enough, 

but where schools are “selective” children are required to 

undertake a Secondary Transfer Test, or 11+. 

Tests vary 

covering a range of topics such as Verbal Reasoning, Non Verbal 

Reasoning, Maths, English. The SW Herts Consortium have an 

Academic test, (Verbal Reasoning and Maths) a Music test, (2 

stages) and a Sports Aptitude test specifically for Queens school. 

The SW Herts Consortium 

advised in January 2019, that this year’s test would be in a new 

format provided by GL Assessment with different types of verbal 

reasoning questions. This will introduce a separate question and 

multiple choice answer sheet. As children are not taught Verbal 

reasoning in school, parents will need to support their child 

outside the classroom, either through working with their child, or 

by engaging a tutor. 

Tutoring 

is just one part of the preparation. Children in Year 5 may have 

not faced the formality of a big hall exam, away from the comfort 

of their own school hall, tutors house or kitchen table. 

Training 

like an athlete, dancer or actor training should form part of 

their preparation, helping children prepare for the main event. 

Exposure to a test environment where the consequences of

Research 

has shown that students under perform by 20% in their first 

test due to stress and anxiety, reducing in the second and third 

tests. Students become less concerned about the environment 

leaving them to focus on delivery and ability. 

Children need to be children 

however all the training must not be lost over the summer break. 

The introduction of short mini tests covering VR and Maths is a 

good compromise over the summer holidays, either in book form 

or an online platform. This can then be followed with some more 

focused revision and preparation prior to the test is September to 

ensure peak performance on the day.
