The Potentate’s Message
Es Selamu Aleikum
Greetings Illustrious Sirs, Nobles, and Ladies,
Nobles, Ladies and Friends:
Summertime is here, those lazy, hazy days of summer. The picnic season is here
and I hope everybody is dry. Mother Nature continues to show she is in charge.
Your Elected Divan and Chanters traveled to Nashville for the Imperial Session.
The Chanters competed in competition and the Elected Divan attended the Imperial
Sessions. It is always good to see your counterparts from across the Shrine Kingdom.
August brings the Pote’s Picnic and we look forward to seeing everybody at the
Shrine Complex. Bring your chair and a pop-up tent if you want some shaded area to
sit. Nobles, we have some new members joining, but we still need to find worthy Master
Masons for the full ceremonial in December. Imperial Sir Jeff Sowder’s program is
“Just One.” Each member is challenged to replace themselves with “Just One.”
September will be another busy month with Masa and Virginia Beach, followed
by the Sportsmen’s Raffle September 15th. Nobles, this is our biggest fundraiser.
Continue to sell tickets and enjoy a day of fun and fellowship. September also brings a trip to the 9-11
Memorial. Contact Gary Brown with the Legion of Honor for more information.
October brings the Pretzel Bowl this year. Please plan to attend and support this event.
Yours in the Faith,
TIN LIZZIES PARTNER
WITH SPECIAL
NEEDS KIDS
It started as a need to find a more efficient way to manage a
particular task in the Tin Lizzies pie baking operation. As the
club expanded sales of shoofly pies into food markets, we had to
conform to certain state regulations, one of them being that each
box be stamped with information on ingredients, etc.
Tin Lizzie Chris Yeager, a retired school principal, had the
idea of enlisting specials needs kids to handle the time-consuming
task of stamping the new pie boxes. He contacted Doctor Daniel
Cullen, Supervisor of Special Education who manages Life Skills
Education services for 13 school districts in Northampton, Monroe and Pike
Counties. Dr Cullen, who is always looking for new challenges for his special
needs students jumped at the idea of working with the Tin Lizzies. Before
long, his students from Wilson High
School in Easton were stamping pie boxes
and having fun doing it. Doctor Cullen
and Life Skills Special Education teacher
Linda Moscaritolo developed a Life Skills
program to include working with the club
in baking and selling pies. The Tin Lizzie
partnership is one of several that Doctor
Cullen has established for the students;
another is with Saint Luke’s Hospital
campus in Bethlehem.
Kenny Hummel connects with a student
Dr. Dan Cullen and Special Needs
teacher Linda Moscaritola
Chris Yeager, leader
of the project
At the end of the school year, a special event was held for the students and the Tin Lizzies
were invited. We brought our cars and Charles Rickenbach and Kenny Hummel gave a
demonstration. The kids sat in the cars, tooted the horns, and hade pictures taken. They had a
ball – and so did the Tin Lizzies! After all this is what it’s all about isn’t it?
The kids sat in the cars, tooted
the horns, and enjoyed themselves.
right pose with the Special Needs class. Not seen is Bruce Johnson
THE POWER OF THE TAB
By Sam Ellis
In early June, Carl Frey sent a picture of he and Les Werley accepting
donations of soda can tabs from the Virginville Junior Grange. It was a
nice gesture by these youngsters and it got me thinking.
Saving aluminum tabs from soda cans is standard practice for Shriners.
But I never really gave much thought to how much money we raise by
collecting tabs. I used to think “why not save the whole can?” Then I found
that a tab is pure aluminum where the can is a mix and not pure. So forget
the can.
The Virginville Junior Grange donated 30
bags of tabs to Rajah for the Shriners
Childrens Hospital.
Still to me a single tab alone cannot be worth much. According to
Wikipedia, it takes 1,128 tabs to make
a pound. But I discovered that there is
power in numbers. According to rajahshrine.org, thanks to all of you who save tabs and to
donations from organizations like the Virginville Junior Grange, last year Rajah collected 287
million tabs. That’s 87 tons! Rajah was able to donate $73,500 to the Philadelphia Shriners
Hospital for Children thanks to the power of the aluminum tab.
Noble Walter
"Dick" Bortz
Rajah began collecting tabs about eight years ago. Noble Walter “Dick” Bortz was
Aluminum Can Tab Coordinator for many years. Noble Walter has since passed and today
Terry Hulsizer takes care of organizing and transporting the tabs to a recycling center for
reclamation.
Save your tabs in one-pound zip top bags, coffee cans, shoe boxes, whatever and either
drop them off at the Rajah office or bring them to your next Unit or Club meeting. Even if you
only have a few tabs, when you put them in the can, they really begin to add up. So keep on
collecting those tabs!
AMBASSADOR DAVID RAGAN TO
HONOR FELLOW SHRINER DAVID
PEARSON AT DARLINGTON
On June 26, Front Row Motorsports, Shriners International
the Labor Day weekend.
David Ragan, a Shriner himself, helped unveil his car. It
LEGION OF HONOR
First off, a reminder: the August Legion meeting is on Saturday, August 17th at 9:00 a.m., NOT the
usual 2nd Tuesday.
The Commander’s Ball was a huge success. Our congratulations to Commander Mike and his Lady
Anne. Commander Mike wishes to thank everyone who helped make the ball a great success. 1st Vice
Commander Clint did an excellent job of doing most of the arranging of the event.
Commander Mike also presents his congratulations to Ill. Sir Bill Remo on becoming the Legions of
Honor MASA Commander.
The past few months were pretty active, what with parades in Birdsboro and Bernville in May. Then
July started off with the Independence Day parade in Wyomissing, our regular meeting, the Rajah Stated
meeting, Shrine night with the Fightin’ Phils, our Family Picnic complete with Barnyard Bingo and the VA
Burger Burn. I hope all of you were able to participate in some of those activities.
Coming up is the Pote’s Picnic on August 7. As has been the case for many years, the Legion will man
the clam line. We start bagging those clams at 8:00. It’s a long day, but a fun one. Everyone certainly gets their share of clams and
all the other goodies at that picnic. Please come join us.
We’d be remiss if we didn’t offer our sincere condolences to Ill. Sir Ron Rapp. He lost his Lady Joan on Tuesday, July 2. We
will all miss her humor and her presence at many of our events and activities. Go with God, Joan.
John Grumbein
ORIENTAL BAND
The Oriental Band started the month of May by teaming up with our friends from Lehigh Shrine Club
for the annual Hospital Crusade at Redner’s on Lehigh Street in Allentown. We had plenty of help both
days. It’s always nice to hear the customers at the store commend Shriners for what we do. A few of the
customers have or had either a friend or family member who was a patient at one of our hospitals. Some of
the folks broke into tears of thanks for treatment received. When it was all over on Saturday, the volunteers
headed to the Grumbeins’ home for refreshment. Finally, a day without rain. A big tip of the fez to all who
gave of their time to help raise money for the transportation fund.
The Band is now preparing for the MASA parade. We will have our float in the parade again this year
after a few years of absence. Speaking of MASA, this year our own Don Heimbecker, Sr. will be installed
as the President of the Mid-Atlantic Shrine Oriental Band Association and Dennis Guignet, Sr. will be
installed as 3rd Vice President of the Association.
On a sad note, the Oriental Band would like to offer their most sincere condolences to Illustrious Sir
P.P. Ron Rapp on the untimely passing of his Lady Joan. “Joanie,” as everyone knew her, touched the lives
(and funny bones) of all she came in contact with. She will be sorely missed.
In closing, please remember the children in our Hospitals. That’s the bottom line of it all.
PROVOST GUARD
The summer is moving along a little too fast for my liking. The cold, harsh temperatures of winter
melted into the warmth of spring followed by the heat and humidity of summer and now autumn beckons
with the changing colors of the leaves and moderating temperatures. All in all, it looks like Virginia Beach
weather to me!
Yes, it’s that time when we head to the beach for some relaxation and camaraderie with old friends on
Atlantic Avenue. As we set sail south, we in the Provost Guard have some bragging to do as our immediate
Past President, Noble Dennis Loch, will be taking over the helm of the Mid-Atlantic Shrine Provost
Guard Association when he’s installed Colonel of this proud body of Nobles. Dennis will be sworn into
office during the annual meeting of the MASPGA on Friday, September 6th at 11 AM when we meet for
the business meeting, election of officers and installation. We would like to invite everyone to attend the
installation ceremony on the second floor of the Virginia Beach Convention Center. When you are at the center visiting the Market
Place, look for signs directing you to the Provost Guard meeting room. We will have full coverage of Dennis’ installation in the
next edition of the Rajah News.
Upcoming events also include our participation at the Pote’s Picnic on Wednesday, August 7th at the Rajah Complex, the Rajah
Sportsman’s Raffle on Sunday, September 15th and the Pretzel Bowl on Saturday, October 26th at Albright College in Reading.
The biggest and best food fest of the year is also just around the corner – the annual All-You-Care-To-Eat Provost Guard
Spaghetti Dinner on Saturday, October 12th. NOW, YES NOW, get your calendar out and mark down that date. We’ll once again
have our famous dinner at the Rajah Complex from 3 – 7 p.m. featuring our delicious pasta with meatballs and sauce, salad, bread
and beverages, all for just $7.00 per person, eat-in or take-out. We’ll also have a large array of mouth-watering desserts available
for sale as well. Tickets will be available at the door.
Hey, Nobles looking for a fun night out? There’s always room for one more and you’re invited. We meet on the third Tuesday
of each month at 7 p.m. in the All-Purpose Meeting Room at the Rajah Shrine Complex. All members of Rajah Shrine, new or old,
are invited and encouraged to join us.
CONCERT BAND
Holiday Happenings at the Scottish Rite in West Reading
It’s not too early to start thinking about Christmas. I would suggest that you get out your calendar and
reserve time for two fun weekends called “Holiday Happenings at the Scottish Rite Cathedral” in West
Reading. This year Holiday Happenings is being held on Saturday, November 30th; Sunday, December
1st; Saturday, December 7th and Sunday, December 8th. Families will fill the halls and rooms of the
cathedral, taking pictures with Santa Claus, snacking on cookies and playing vintage arcade games during
this free event. The auditorium will be packed full of entertainment. The Valley of Reading Train Club will
oversee the large train displays that the club spent months setting up in several rooms. Children of all ages
will watch in awe as the model trains speed along the tracks. Doors will open for the Holiday Happening
This year I am pleased to announce that the Rajah Concert Band and Rajah Chanters will be teaming up to promote a Christmas
Program on Saturday, November 30th. Directors Band Master, Noble Bruce D. Rohrbach and Chanter President, Noble David R.
DeTurk will ensure a fun time. Next mark your calendar for another cool time with an army of tubas, “the Merry TubaChristmas
Program” on Saturday, December 1st. Under the leadership by TubaChrismas Coordinator, Noble Bryan D. Snyder and Music
Director, Noble Chuck Runkle, its designed to be a harmonious time with the low brass players. Tuba and euphonium players are
invited to participate. There will be over fifty players ranging in ages from 8 years old to 85 years old. Again, it’s a family time.
Since 1974, tuba, sousaphone, euphonium and baritone horn players from across the nation play Merry TubaChristmas carols, first
with instruments only and then with everyone singing along. Last year the Rajah Legion of Honor presented our nation’s colors and
the tubas performed the Star-Spangled Banner. Hopefully the nobles from the Legion of Honor will join us with the programing
again this year.
By the time this article is published the Concert Band will have performed on Saturday, August 3rd at 4 p.m., at the Bernville
Umbenhauer Park, for the Concert in the Park, sponsored by the American Legion. Next, we will be off to Virginia Beach for
MASA. We hope to be performing in the Hotel Hospitality Lounge and the MASA Parade. Wow, where did the summer go?
ANGLERS
By the time you read this, summer will be more than half over and some of our fishing trips will only
be a memory. Did we catch fish? Yes, but it was hardly a banner year so far due to excessively high and
colder water than usual. Whether it was pike, crappie or bass in lakes or the high creeks for trout fishing, it
was a challenge. We always caught fish but they were not exactly jumping on the rods. No matter we still
have fun and there is always the event that might earn you the coveted “Ryan Award.”
We had a very successful paper drive at the Redner’s Market in Northampton. It seems, at least for us,
that the Memorial Day weekend gets us the most volunteers to work the drive. Once again we collected
over $1,300 from the customers and once again the Krista Hankee Foundation donated $1,000 for our
transportation fund. It’s the least we can do to help kids much less fortunate physically then ourselves.
The weather has not only affected our fishing agenda but has also thrown us a curve ball in our sauerkraut fundraising project.
We surely thought by now that we’d have over 200 heads of cabbage curing to be the final product. We expect to still complete our
project by the end of July so stay tuned for the date of preparation.
Next year should be an interesting year for us. Marv Miller will be our illustrious Potentate and several of us have consented
to be his aides. If things work out as planned, we will also have two Anglers in line to be future Potentates. That says a lot for the
quality of people we have in the club.
Due to the holiday in July, we did not have a monthly meeting so we will have an executive meeting to deal with any upcoming
issues and fishing trips. With the Pote’s picnic the 1st Wednesday in August, our meeting will be held the 2nd Wednesday and may
be a picnic. I will keep you informed after our executive meeting. Please keep Ruth Wicker in mind if you are willing to work one
or two nights a year at Bingo. Please call at 610-799-3944 and tell her she can count on you.
Have a great summer and watch for future events for Rajah Shrine and the Anglers.
INTRODUCING THE SHRINERS HOSPITALS
FOR CHILDREN 2019-2020 NATIONAL
PATIENT AMBASSADORS
Every year, Shriners Hospitals for Children selects two National Patient Ambassadors to
represent the health care system’s patients. The ambassadors spend the year sharing their stories
of perseverance in the face of adversity and the ways Shriners Hospitals for Children has made a
dramatic difference in their lives. It is our pleasure to introduce you to our two new ambassadors
for the 2019-2020 year, Madelyn and Cristian.
Madelyn:
Now 19, Madelyn was born 10 weeks early. Doctors told her parents that she was beautiful,
healthy, tiny – and was born without her left arm. Madelyn’s journey with Shriners Hospitals
for Children began with her first visit to our St. Louis location when she was just 3 months
old. Throughout her childhood, Madelyn used prosthetics, mainly for balance and to help with
various activities. Occupational therapists at the hospital helped Madelyn learn to function and
interact in the world. As she grew older, Madelyn began using her prosthetics less often and, by middle
school, she opted to stop using them. In high school, she participated in competitive swimming and coed water polo. Madelyn is
now a student at Maryville University in St. Louis. She’s made the Dean’s List in her first two semesters.
As an ambassador, Madelyn said “I hope to inspire other kids and be able to show them that they can do anything they put their
minds to.”
Cristian:
Now 18, Cristian was born with spina bifida and hydrocephalus. In his first two weeks of life, Cristian had two surgeries and
went on to have nearly a dozen more. He faced several of the same challenges of many other patients with spina bifida, including
gastrointestinal system and balance difficulties, as well as complications from various surgeries.
For several years, Cristian’s family had difficulty finding doctors who understood how to best help him. That all changed one
day in 2012, when he met a Shriner who referred him to Shriners Hospitals for Children. Cristian was 13 when he had the surgery
that he says changed his life and gave him hope at Shriners Hospitals for Children – Los Angeles (now Shriners for Children
Medical Center – Pasadena).
Devoted to his schoolwork and seminary studies, as well as his part-time job and playing the cello, Cristian has also been active
in supporting Shriners Hospitals for Children.
Cristian is looking forward to his responsibilities as a National Patient Ambassador. “I know that I am who I am because of the
Shriners,” he said, “I hope to share a message of positivity and hope to all those who need it.”
STRING BAND
Greetings from your Rajah String Band,
Please check out our new Facebook page at ‘Rajah Shrine String Band’. Like us, follow us and share us
to keep our page visible. Find information there about our upcoming parade schedule and more pictures.
Click on the Circus Picture to hear a set of the songs we played.
The parade season started July 3rd at Lititz Independence Day Parade, where there is always a big
crowd. They do a great tribute to our Veterans each year. On July 4th at Glenside Independence Day
Parade, the people cheered as we went by, “We love you guys, keep up the great work!” We had a full
float and great weather both days. Thanks to all the musicians who gave their time and talent for the kids.
Looking forward to seeing everyone at MASA. Always a fun trip with our Friday night up and down
Atlantic Avenue and the Saturday parade. Please note the following update...
MASA Friday Night Float Tradition
Because of Insurance stipulations, there are only a specific number of people allowed on the float and EVERYONE MUST be
seated. Absolutely No Standing! No Exceptions!
Here is the protocol order in which we will board the float for Friday Nights ride through town:
1. Musicians and instruments board first
2. After Musicians have set up, their Ladies board next
3. Finally, the current Pote and his Lady
It is with great sadness that we remember the passing of
Joan Rapp, wife of Ronald Rapp PP.
If any members need new shirts or green jackets
embroidered, contact Tom Dietrich.
As always, there is an open door invitation for musicians to
play in the String Band. If you play an instrument come out to
a rehearsal on the second Wednesday at 6 p.m. at the Complex.
With the support of our Ladies, our purpose is that we might
play our instruments so that someday a physically challenged
child may walk and play again. See you at MASA!
of the Annual Session.
CHANTERS
Although our trip to the 145th Annual Session
of Shrine International Convention in Nashville,
Tennessee was not as successful as we would have
hoped when competing at the Shrine Chanters
Association International annual competition, we did
manage to have a great time, renew old acquaintances
and receive numerous accolades from the Imperial
officers. We sang at the Memorial Service held in the
Grand Lodge of Tennessee and we led the singing of our
National Anthem during the official opening ceremony
In the large group category, we finished third, just missing second place by
a couple of points. Although Syria Chanters, Pittsburgh, were second in that category,
our Quartet finished ahead of Syria to place second in the small group category. Moolah
Chanters of St. Louis, MO finished first in both categories of the competition.
On the business side of the S.C.A.I., a new slate of officers was elected with Rajah
Chanters’ Director and Conductor, Noble Bruce Rohrbach installed First Vice President
of the association. Greg Lewis, PP, Rajah Shrine, the out-going President, was elected to
serve on the SCAI Board of Directors.
Category
The Quartet finished second in
the Small Group category
We are also very
proud that our Rajah Chanters float was in the parade in Nashville
and was very well received throughout the entire 2 mile parade
route in the downtown area. We were the only singing group in
the entire parade, which featured marching and musical groups
from among over 100 Shrine Temples that participated.
With the Imperial session out of the way, we are now
concentrating on our trip to the beach to compete at MASA. We
are looking to defend our top spot and to bring home the bacon
once again from Virginia Beach.
Recently we had the pleasure of singing for over 700 persons
at the gathering of the PA Eastern Star convention in York, PA.
We are also practicing for the numerous sing-outs that we have
been requested to provide and look forward to performing at a
venue near you.
Are you a member of Rajah and looking for a way to be
involved in an active and entertaining way? We rehearse Monday
nights at 7 in the Rajah All-Purpose Room and you’re invited.
Walter Lamm
Fellow Nobles, as I write this article, we are enjoying (?) the summer heat. I am already looking
forward to autumn and the start of college football.
The Lehigh Shrine Club held our Annual Bingo at the Complex on Friday, May 17. There were 56
Nobles, Ladies and guests present. A buffet of Caesar salad, meatballs, chicken, vegetables and pie ala
mode for dessert was served. Chief Rabban Marvin Miller and his Lady Marie represented the Potentate.
We played a lot of bingo games with much talk and laughter. The play continued until everyone won a
prize. It is always a fun and very social evening.
Our June 5 meeting was the semifamous
Hawaiian Shirt Night at the
Roger C. Reis Brass Rail. Dinner was steak sandwiches
and pizza and french fries. A delicious
ice cream sundae was served as dessert. After a close (but secret)
vote, my Lady Jan won the prize for the “Best Hawaiian Shirt.”
Actually, it was MY shirt but she took it from me earlier in the
evening. But I got to hold the TV remote control later that night so
it all worked out! Another fun time with our Nobles and Ladies.
A reminder to “Save the Date” for our Interclub Night on
Wednesday, August 21. The meeting will be held at Lehigh Lodge
# 326 on Route 100 in Trexlertown. This is our renowned “All You
Can Eat” meal of ham and eggs, salad, potatoes, corn on the cob,
pie ala mode, and some Camel’s milk. Please make reservations
with our Secretary Noble Earl J. Marlatt.
Our Golf tournament will be on Wednesday, October 9. Further
information will be forthcoming.
We WILL be selling Raffle tickets again this year. We hope to
have them available shortly.
Enjoy a safe and pleasant summer. See you at MASA in the
fall!
Remember to support YOUR Clubs and Units. Without
member participation, we WILL cease to exist!
As always, it’s GREAT to be a Shriner.
HOSPITAL SERVICES
So far it has been a hot summer and the number of children transported to the Shriners Hospital for
appointments has increased. The June 22nd Shriners Hospital of Philadelphia Expanded Board Day was
an outstanding success. With the event being held on a Saturday, there was record-breaking attendance.
The hospital Marketing and Communications Staff provided an eye-opening experience to visitors about
the facility, technology and outstanding staff and doctors that provide assistance in helping the children to
walk again.
You can support the Hospital Service Unit by participating in the Unit’s raffle. The drawing will be
on September 7th with cash prizes ranging from $25.00 to $200.00. Attendance is not required to claim
your winnings.
The parents/guardians of the children wish to express a sincere appreciation to the drivers for their time,
kindness and consideration in transporting their children for their appointments to the Shriners Hospital.
In addition, the Hospital Service Unit parade float is ready for action. However, we are in need of a tow vehicle capable of pulling
a 5,000-pound trailer. If you have such a vehicle and would like to participate in local parades, please contact acting President Noble
Carl Willis to discuss. Your help would be greatly appreciated.
Forks of the Delaware Tin Lizzies
The summer began with parades and the Hospital Crusade. It’s always inspiring when someone
comes up to you during the crusade and relates a story of how the Shriners Hospitals helped them, a
relative or someone they know. The Shriners touch so many people with our hospitals that it is sometimes
overwhelming to consider our service to the community over the years.
Our Annual Tin Lizzie Clam Bake took place on July 13 at Bady’s Grove in Wind Gap. We were
honored to have in attendance Assistant Rabban Walter Newruck and Lady Gail; High Priest and Prophet
Kraig Leiby, who teamed up with Larry Silfies for a couple of games of quoits; and Recorder Les Werley,
who sampled the burgers and potato salad. First Ceremonial Master Don Heimbecker and Lady Carol
stopped by also.
Thanks to club president Dean Mathews for organizing the event along with Ron Barron, Sam Ellis,
Sally Johnson and Garrett Newhartz. Thanks also to Dave Lamar for providing entertainment, singing 50s
and 60s oldies. It was a great day.
On a final note, the club wishes to express our condolences to Rajah Treasurer and Past Potentate Ron Rapp for the loss of Lady
Joan. She was a terrific lady and will be missed by all.
Rev. David
disappeared from their midst.
THE CHAPLAIN’S STUDY
Paul entreats the community in Corinth “…do not accept the grace of God in vain” and quotes Isaiah
“At the acceptable time I have listened to you and helped you on the day of Salvation.”
Paul is trying to get the Corinthians out of a common happening with us, that is becoming set in our
ways and comfortable with the status quo. If you accept God’s grace then take it to its fulfillment, that
is to make it active in your world. Don’t just receive God’s grace - you must pass it on. God’s grace is
meaningless until you give it away to others. When you understand the nature of this God we love, then
you will see why that is necessary.
Jesus quotes Isaiah 61:1-2 “ The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because the Lord has anointed me to
bring good tidings to the afflicted; he has sent me to bind up the broken hearted, to proclaim liberty to the
captives and opening of the prison to those who are bound…” These are the basics of what Jesus did in
his lifetime as the Son of God. Yet when he read these lines from Isaiah in the synagogue in his hometown
Nazareth, the people became angry and put him out of the city and tried to throw him off a cliff. Jesus just
It is through Jesus that we received God’s grace which brings us salvation.
We are called to live in that grace and pass it on to those about us. That is why Paul gives that warning, “…do not accept the
grace of God in vain.” Doing that is like wasting your life just to say that you are one with God.
We are called to live that faith and share it at all times.
