LEGION OF HONOR
First off, a reminder: the August Legion meeting is on Saturday, August 17th at 9:00 a.m., NOT the
usual 2nd Tuesday.
The Commander’s Ball was a huge success. Our congratulations to Commander Mike and his Lady
Anne. Commander Mike wishes to thank everyone who helped make the ball a great success. 1st Vice
Commander Clint did an excellent job of doing most of the arranging of the event.
Commander Mike also presents his congratulations to Ill. Sir Bill Remo on becoming the Legions of
Honor MASA Commander.
The past few months were pretty active, what with parades in Birdsboro and Bernville in May. Then
July started off with the Independence Day parade in Wyomissing, our regular meeting, the Rajah Stated
meeting, Shrine night with the Fightin’ Phils, our Family Picnic complete with Barnyard Bingo and the VA
Burger Burn. I hope all of you were able to participate in some of those activities.
Coming up is the Pote’s Picnic on August 7. As has been the case for many years, the Legion will man
the clam line. We start bagging those clams at 8:00. It’s a long day, but a fun one. Everyone certainly gets their share of clams and
all the other goodies at that picnic. Please come join us.
We’d be remiss if we didn’t offer our sincere condolences to Ill. Sir Ron Rapp. He lost his Lady Joan on Tuesday, July 2. We
will all miss her humor and her presence at many of our events and activities. Go with God, Joan.
ORIENTAL BAND
The Oriental Band started the month of May by teaming up with our friends from Lehigh Shrine Club
for the annual Hospital Crusade at Redner’s on Lehigh Street in Allentown. We had plenty of help both
days. It’s always nice to hear the customers at the store commend Shriners for what we do. A few of the
customers have or had either a friend or family member who was a patient at one of our hospitals. Some of
the folks broke into tears of thanks for treatment received. When it was all over on Saturday, the volunteers
headed to the Grumbeins’ home for refreshment. Finally, a day without rain. A big tip of the fez to all who
gave of their time to help raise money for the transportation fund.
The Band is now preparing for the MASA parade. We will have our float in the parade again this year
after a few years of absence. Speaking of MASA, this year our own Don Heimbecker, Sr. will be installed
as the President of the Mid-Atlantic Shrine Oriental Band Association and Dennis Guignet, Sr. will be
installed as 3rd Vice President of the Association.
On a sad note, the Oriental Band would like to offer their most sincere condolences to Illustrious Sir
P.P. Ron Rapp on the untimely passing of his Lady Joan. “Joanie,” as everyone knew her, touched the lives
(and funny bones) of all she came in contact with. She will be sorely missed.
In closing, please remember the children in our Hospitals. That’s the bottom line of it all.
