from the editors
Not a long time ago in an awesome workplace,
not so far away… two project managers -a team
lead and a recent hire-, sat down to discuss
about projects (of course) and also ways to
improve communication in their department,
when a marvelous idea came across their
paths: To write about project management
news and updates, best practices for engaging,
motivating and inspiring others, hilarious jokes,
random interesting stuff and surprising advice
on wellness, life style and health among other
interesting facts. But the main question was,
what could be the best possible way to bring all
this information together?
After several days of brainstorm, a great idea
arose: to create an electronic issue, with a
monthly release to consolidate different
articles and news with a fresh modern yet
professional look.
And it was our story, the story about an idea
that became a reality with the release of this
first Pathways issue.
So, why Pathways?, you may ask... and the
answer is simple, it conceptualizes our vision:
to make each and every article and news within
this release a pathway. Here you will find
different pathways of communication: a
convenient pathway to learn, a modern
pathway to explore and open our minds to a
new collaborative, fun and professional way of
sharing information, always looking forward to
the future and more pathways to come.
Pathways pretends to compile information,
articles and infographics that will be gathered
and released on a monthly issue for you to
enjoy and make it your own. So whatever
interests you may have, we truly believe here
you will find the right pathway to gain more
insight about it.
We are excited about this new journey! And
remember that we are all on the same pathway
together.
Healthy Work
Environment & Stress
B Y S U N H I P A R K
Have you ever thought about what makes a good and
healthy work environment? What kind of factors are most
important for you to enjoy your job? If you ask these
questions to your peers you will probably get different
answers but what would you respond to these questions?
Or, are we just thinking in "salary"? Of course, we all want to
get paid but what are you making different to get paid AND
to enjoy your job?
You will probably be asking, how can I be positive if I have a
lot of things to do and I'm feeling stressed? Do you really
know what the stress is? The stress is your body's way of
responding to any kind of demand, this can be caused by
both, good and bad experiences. Stress if the body's
reaction to harmful situations, whether they are real or
perceived. The stress is not always unhealthy as long as you
identify what level of stress you have.
Even if you are feeling well, it's normal to experience brief
periods of stress. If you are experiencing short periods of
stress it is an appropriate reaction that help us to overcome
strain. Long periods of stress can trigger a lot of physical
and psychological symptoms that may have a negative
impact on your daily routine.
If your stress is not reduced and you are experiencing it for
long periods of time, then it will have more serious
consequences.
Take time to
look after
your self
BY ARMANDO RAMOS
Most of the time we are so absorbed in our daily
activities: job, college, meetings, traffic, shopping...
that we forget about ourselves. This article doesn't
pretend to be a guide for tips to get a better life,
instead it pretends to be a humble list of
recommendations that will help you to reconnect
with yourself and take care of that one super
important person in your life: YOU!
1. Exercise your body on a daily basis. For most of
us, this is a difficult goal to achieve (I personally
struggle a lot with it), however, exercising in a daily
basis definitely makes you feel better, boost your
energy and makes you a healthier person.
2. Read a book or magazine. Reading Pathways is
a must!
Quality of
life is...
being able
to take care
of yourself
Make sure you sleep enough to keep your metabolism active and allow
your body to recover from the activities you done the day before.
5. Organize your expenses. Financial health is key for your personal
wellness. Debts and financial disorganization will make you feel anxious
and will impact your physical and mental health, will make you run out
of money quickly and won't allow you to reach your goals. You need to
keep a budget and adhere your expenses to it. Do not forget to save
20% of your income!
6. Spend time with friends and family. Interpersonal and family
relationships are a key factor to keep a good mental health. Make your
weekend about you, your family and friends, not work!
7. Education. Make sure you have enough time to educate yourself. It
doesn't matter if you get enrolled in college, an online training course,
art clases or learning a new language in Duolingo, what is really
important is for you to keep growing your knowledge and abilities and
stay up-to-date on technological changes. As the motto mentions:
Knowledge is power.
8 . Give some love to a person in need. We may think that we can
cover the needs of others by giving them money or things to cover their
physical needs, but giving love and support to someone in definitely
more important. You will get impressed about how much it does
impact someone to demonstrate you care; but trust me, it does impact
you in the same way. Helping others, taking care of others and loving
them really makes you be a better person.
9. Travel. This is definitely my personal favorite! Travel will not only
open your mind to a new perspective of life and places, cultures and
people but will allow you to enjoy new experiences and take you out of
your comfort zone. It is great when you do something for the first time
and it is awesome when you meet new people with different points of
view.
DID YOU
KNOW?...
DINOSAURS
B Y A R M A N D O R A M O S
MANY PEOPLE MAY THINK
ABOUT DINOSAURS AS GIANT
AND DANGEROUS REPTILES
THAT LIVED SEVERAL YEARS
AGO. NOT EVERYTHING THAT
WE LEARNED AT SCHOOL
ABOUT THEM IS TRUE, RECENT
DISCOVERIES HAVE RESHAPED
WHAT WE THOUGHT ABOUT
THEM.
HERE YOU WILL FIND SOME
INTERESTING FACTS ABOUT
THESE ANIMALS THAT LIVED
SEVERAL MILLION YEARS AGO
1.Dinosaurs and humans never
coexisted. The Mesozoic Era
(Divided into Triassic, Jurassic and
Cretaceous periods) occurred
roughly 66 to 252 million years ago
while homo sapiens emerged
roughly 300,000 years ago.
2. Many Dinosaurs didn't have
scales, instead, they had
feathers. As ancestors of modern
birds, dinosaurs likely had
elaborate and colorful plumes
that resemble those of peacocks
and other birds such as flamingos.
3. The time span between the
existence of the Stegosaurus and
T-Rex is longer than the one
between T-Rex and Humans.
Stegosaurus lived around 180-150
million years ago during the
Jurassic period, while T-Rex lived
around 64 million years ago during
the Cretaceous period.
4. Brontosaurus didn't exist. It
was an incorrectly identified
dinosaur created by putting the
head of a Camarasaurus on the
body of an Apatosaurus.
5. Not all the dinosaurs were big.
Actually, some dinosaurs such as
Nemicolopterus crypticus were so
small that had a wingspan of less
than 25 centimeters
2. Whenever you have a spreadsheet with a
humongous amount of information, columnwise
or row-wise, and you need to select either
the complete row or the complete column you
can do on your keyboard Shft + Ctrl + Arrow (up
or down for row/left of right for column).
3. If for some reason you need to calculate
total number of days in month, you can use the
following
formula:
=DAY(EOMONTH(TODAY(),0)).
You all know about Excel, correct? You know
that software program created by Microsoft that
uses spreadsheets to organize numbers and data
with formulas and functions. Sounds like a
simple and straightforward program to use,
right?
Well, in some instances it is but in some other is
not. But hey! Nowadays, on an ever-evolving
environment that we all work on, it is critical to
use tools like Excel to manage tasks more
efficiently, be more productive and better yet;
impress your clients.
4. Why no calculate your age? =”Your age is “&
DATEDIF(Date-of-Birth,Today(),”y”) &” Year(s), “&
DATEDIF(Date-of-Birth,TODAY(),”ym”)& ”
MONTH(s) & “& DATEDIF(Date-of-
Birth,TODAY(),”md”)& ” Day(s).”
Make sure to replace “Date-of-Birth” with
your actual date of birth.
5. Transpose (rotate) data from rows to
columns or vice versa
Here are some tricks you can use and make
your own:
1. If you ever feel the need to jump from
worksheet to worksheet without the need of
using the ; you can use your keyboard and
type Ctrl + PgDn and Ctrl + PgUp.
Boost
your
Mood
A proposed habit to start
your day on a healthy way
B Y J U L I O G O D O Y
So, you wake up early in the morning and take a hot
shower, get dressed, grab your breakfast and run your way
out to beat traffic; just to find out there is a traffic jam and
the worst of it is, there is no reason for it. There you are,
running late, anxious and nervous because you won’t make
it on time. You get to the office, exchange a couple jokes
with your friends and get into your daily activities. The day
is gone, and you head back home, spend a couple of
minutes with the family and go to bed, just to get ready to
start the routine the next day. And the question is, where in
this routine of yours is your “me” time?
Humans have been created to achieve goals, grind their
way to the top; and to do this you have to set some time for
yourself; healthy mind must be held in a healthy body,
right?
So, how do you do achieve this on such a tight schedule?
The answer is easy, make the time. Easier said than done,
right? WROOONG. Human beings were made to adapt but
it takes some time; some studies have revealed it takes
about 21 days to get used to a new habit, so why not get
started today? No? tell that to this guy:
EXCERCISING RELAXES AND
MAKES YOU HAPPIER
Jokes aside, exercising will help you release or
produce endorphins, serotonins and
norepinephrines which, long story short, will relax
you and make you happier. And, what if I told
you, you don’t have to spend two hours at the
gym everyday to get started but just by waking up
20 minutes earlier you can start with a 10-minute
workout (I’ll tell you how shortly). So why wake
up 20 minutes earlier if I only need 10?
As you know, leaving 10 minutes earlier can save
you up to 20-30 minutes in traffic, relieving you
from the stress and anxiety that being late will
cause to you and, these 2 things combined will
pump up your energy and boost your mood
through the day. I don’t say it will be easy but
give it a try this month and wait for the next Life &
Health edition where we will talk how some small
shifts on what you eat can also boost your mood.
Oops, almost forgot, here is how you can get
those hormones going
