The last few weeks have been
it all started with Beyonce, wife of
nation sports is the cherry on the
not left out. The 19-year-old who
plays for Villarreal was one of the
breakout stars of the 2018/2019
season.
He came to the attention of
people when he ran ragged Real
He proved his performance that
P comments on Manchester City's spending
in the transfer market, rejecting the notion that
Liverpool cannot compete with the Premier
League champions financially.
The Reds have been relatively quiet in the summer window in
terms of signing new players, with teenage starlets Sepp van den
Berg and Harvey Elliott the only fresh arrivals at Anfield so far.
City, on the other hand, shelled out a club-record fee of £62.8
million to bring Spanish midfielder Rodri to the Etihad Stadium
from Atletico Madrid earlier this month, after identifying the need
to bring in cover for 34-year-old Fernandinho in midfield.
Klopp has defended Liverpool's lack of activity in the market by
claiming that only City, Paris Saint Germain, Real Madrid and
Barcelona can "constantly" bring in the world's biggest names.
The German boss will take his side to Wembley on Sunday to face
off against Guardiola's side in the Community Shield and his
counterpart has come out to try and set the record straight.
The City manager dismissed Klopp's comments as "not true" before
insisting that he "cannot spend £200m every season" at the Etihad.
"It bothers me because it's not true that we spend hundreds of
millions every transfer window," Guardiola said at a press conference
on Friday.
"It's Liverpool, 'You'll Never Walk Alone'. It's not a small team. It's
Liverpool. Of course, I don't like it because it's not true. Last season
we spent £17m -- one seven -- on just one player.
"We cannot spend £200m every season. That is the reality. Other
managers can say what they say but I can only say that is not true."
Nwosu hails Osimhen's move to Lille
Henry Nwosu believes Victor Osimhen’s move from Sporting Charleroi to
Mauroy outfit will help in his development.
“It is a right step in the right direction. He did very well at Charleroi, scoring a lot
of goals and I believe he will perform better in Lille,” Nwosu told Goal.
“He is growing, he is still young and Lille is a place where he can improve more
The Sports minister we
need – Peter Oboh
BY JACOB AJOM
PRESIDENT Mohammadu
Buhari has been called
upon to give the sports sector
the best minister it has ever had
in view of the enormous
potentials available in that
sector.
Speaking to sports journalists
at his office in Apapa, former
British and Commonwealth
Lightheavy weight champion
Peter Oboh advised the
President to appoint a sports
loving and God-fearing
individual as sports minister.
“We are tired of seeing people
who come to the ministry and
assume the position of
dictatorial emperors whose
personal interests override
national interest; whose primary
Peter Oboh
aim is how to get more from
sports than what they can give
into sports,” he said.
Oboh remarked that the
Nigerian sports sector needed
someone with a clear vision as to
what and where he wants Nigeria
to be in the next four years. “We
have a lot to do in terms of sports
development from the
grassroots,” he said, pointing out
that “we should learn to take
advantage of our huge
population. Nigeria is not just a
nation, it is the united state of
nations with diverse
endowments in talent and skill.
We have wrestlers in South
South, sprinters in the South West
and South East, long distance
runners in the north,
basketballers in both north and
south, and so on. We need a
minister who can identify these
areas of comparative advantage
and direct our developmental
efforts in those directions.
Enough of talking ministers. We
need action ministers,” Oboh
restated.
He said a minister who knows
his onions should court the
patronage of the private sector in
the execution of sports
programmes, “Nigeria is blessed
with some of the richest
individuals in the world who can
contribute enormously to the
development of sports in the
country. The likes of Dangote,
Otedola among others can do
more if well approached. We
need a minister who can court and
win them over to sports.”
