DAY 1: Arrive Hanoi, Vietnam<br />

Arrive in Hanoi, the capital of Vietnam, and<br />

transfer to your colonial-style hotel.<br />

DAY 2: Hanoi<br />

Hanoi is the country’s cultural heart, bearing<br />

traces of centuries of changing dynasties.<br />

Visit Ho Chi Minh’s house, a simple structure<br />

that served as home to the revolutionary<br />

guerrilla leader. Continue to the lotus-shaped<br />

One Pillar Pagoda, dating back to the first<br />

independent Vietnamese empire. Also<br />

visit the infamous ‘Hanoi Hilton’ prison,<br />

where American prisoners of war were once<br />

confined. Ride like a Local by cyclo through<br />

the city’s Old Quarter. This evening, gather<br />

with your fellow guests for a welcome dinner.<br />

DAY 3: Ha Long Bay<br />

Travel to Haiphong to board Orchid and cruise<br />

picturesque Ha Long Bay. Pass the islets of<br />

Con Vit and Gia Luan, their striking karsts<br />

rising dramatically from the emerald waters.<br />

On a course less frequented by other cruises,<br />

wind past Cat Ba Island, Thoi Quyt, Coc Ngoi<br />

islet, and Cua Van floating village. Halt in Lan<br />

Ha Bay, where you can disembark to enjoy this<br />

remote beach. Back aboard, watch the sun set<br />

over the Gulf of Tonkin, before a ‘Chef ’s Table’<br />

demonstration featuring Vietnamese cuisine,<br />

followed by dinner.<br />

DAY 4: Ha Long Bay & Ho Chi Minh City<br />

Greet the day on deck with sunrise tai chi<br />

overlooking the bay. Then, set out to explore<br />

Toi and Sang (Dark and Bright) cave. Return<br />

for brunch on board as Orchid sails home<br />

to port in Haiphong. Back on terra firma,<br />

proceed to Hang Keng Temple and enjoy a<br />

water puppet show. Later, transfer to Hanoi<br />

and fly to Ho Chi Minh City, formerly Saigon,<br />

where you settle in at your hotel.<br />

DAY 5: Ho Chi Minh City<br />

Rise early for a cyclo ride around the city<br />

and stroll through Tao Dan Park, alive with<br />

birdsong, stopping by a memorial park<br />

dedicated to a Buddhist monk. Changing<br />

from cyclo to vehicle, continue along Nguyen<br />

Dinh Chieu Street to visit a weapons bunker,<br />

along with a food and flower market. Enjoy a<br />

breakfast of pho (noodle soup) with locals in<br />

a secret restaurant. This afternoon, take a drive<br />

viewing St Joseph’s Seminary, the Central Post<br />

Office, and Notre Dame Cathedral. Tonight,<br />

gather for dinner at a local culinary hot spot.<br />

DAY 6: Ho Chi Minh City<br />

Travel into the countryside to explore<br />

the expansive Cu Chi Tunnels. On arrival, talk<br />

with a former Viet Cong soldier and, if you<br />

wish, crawl through these small tunnels once<br />

traversed by Viet Cong guerrillas.<br />

This afternoon, Design your Day® – giving<br />

you the freedom to choose the experience<br />

that is best suited to you. Select from the<br />

following options:<br />

OPTION 1: View historic war images<br />

Visit the War Remnants Museum to view<br />

photographs from Bunyo Ishikawa,<br />

a Vietnam War photojournalist.<br />

OPTION 2: Sample sublime street food<br />

Embark on a culinary tour to try some of<br />

the mouth-watering street food cooked by<br />

local vendors. Watch out for the blazing hot<br />

chillies in some dishes.<br />
