MAYOR SAM Broughton has
been blasted for not consulting
district councillors before
signing an agreement over the
management of Lake Ellesmere.
Mr Broughton faced heavy
criticism at last week’s district
council meeting over the Te
Waihora Co-Governance
agreement.
It was revealed Mr Broughton
had signed off the agreement
with Environment Canterbury,
Te Rūnanga o Ngāi Tahu,
Christchurch City Council and
the Department of Conservation
to share responsibility for
Lake Ellesmere and the wider
catchment.
Mr Broughton signed it on
behalf of the council but did not
consult district councillors.
Councillor Grant Miller said
he couldn’t believe Mr Broughton
would sign the agreement without
showing them first.
“I just cannot accept this, I
will not accept this and I believe
it’s core process at its worst. I
think this is a wrong and abusive
process,” Cr Miller said.

WE REPORT today on two new sport and
recreation areas on the way, a reflection
again of the increasing population (see
page 4).
The Kirwee Recreation Reserve will
be extended by 6.5ha, and at least eight
new playing fields will go into a block of land on Birchs Rd,
Prebbleton.
The public will get their say on both. That’s fine and required
but I wonder at times whether this simply holds up the end
result.
District council staff have the expertise to put children’s
play equipment, fitness equipment, pathways, sports fields,
barbecue areas, and trees and other plantings in the right
place.
The more sport and recreation grounds the better. The
district council must be lauded for its decisions.

THE AMOUNT of rubbish
going to landfill in the district
has jumped by almost 50 per
cent in seven years.
The increase has prompted the
district council to adopt a new
plan to deal with the amount of
waste being produced.
The total amount of rubbish
going to
landfill has
jumped 49.1
per cent from
12,506 tonnes
in 2012 to
18,646 tonnes
in 2018.

Management
and Minimisation
Plan is
the district council’s strategy for
the management of solid waste
for the next six years.
Some of the key actions within
the plan are:
•Establish a reuse shop and
salvage yard. This will be at the
Pines Resource Recovery Park.
•Provide a structure and
utilities for a farm waste and
recycling processing area.
•Investigate fortnightly kerbside
collection as opposed to the
current weekly collection.
After adopting the new
WMMP the district council also
voted to adopt a new draft waste
management and minimisation
bylaw to be opened for public
consultation.
The bylaw sets out specific
ways the new WMMP will be
achieved.
If approved the bylaw would
see all kerbside collection
take place at 6.30am instead
of the current time of 7am on
State Highway 1 and 7.30am
everywhere else.
The district council would also
require individuals lodging resource
or building consents for
commercial or industrial purposes
to submit a waste management
plan for the construction
and operational phases.
Event organisers may also
be required to submit a waste
management plan for an event,
depending on the size.
Mayor Sam Broughton said

BLACK ICE CRASH
A motorist was lucky to escape
injury when his vehicle struck
black ice and overturned into
a ditch near Charing Cross

Andy Grant said the vehicle

cricket oval.
Other works will include an
open space area that can be
used for off-leash dog exercise,
informal areas for children’s play,
a walkway surrounding the reserve,
and new tree planting with

The multi-purpose sport and
recreation park will be built on a
22ha site on Birchs Rd, between
Leadleys Rd and Hamptons Rd.

said there is room for eight playing
fields, as well as a wealth of
other features.
“It’s a bit of a wilderness reserve
in some places,” he said.
“There may well be a mini
lake to run your model boat.
We’re looking at some parking,
and a toilet block and changing
rooms, to service the fields

with a further $10.01 million
being invested into the construction
from Springs Ward reserve
development contributions.
An initial community consultation
on the project was conducted
last year, with local sports
clubs, community groups, local
committees and schools identifying
wishes for more sports fields,
a dog park, safe cycle areas and
an adventure play area for older
children and teenagers.
A play area with a BMX and
pump track is also included in
the plans.
The district council purchased
the additional land in 2011 for
$475,000. A further $450,000
has been allocated this financial
year for the main development
works, including earthworks,
turf establishment, irrigation,
vehicle entrance ways, footpaths,
tree planting and playground
development.
District council major projects

Times the time frame for completion
of the plans.
“Council is now working
on more detailed
concepts and designs for
the park, which will be
released for the next stage
of community consultation
in the next two to
three months.”
The final stage of community
consultation, if
successful, will be followed
by a district council vote
to green light the project.
Mr Reid hopes the reserve will
have a uniquely rural appeal.

check that we’ve got things about
right. We also want to get ideas
on any details that people think

the heritage and history of the
area, while giving residents a
space they can be proud
of,” he said.
“Features are expected
to include park and play
spaces, shade, seating and
picnic areas, an off-leash
dog exercise area, pathways
and bike tracks; including
connection to the
Little River Rail Trail.”

In spite of this, district council
open spaces and property asset
manager Mark Rykers emphasised
the importance of the park
for the growing population.
“The development of this new
park is needed to meet growth
requirements,” he said.
It is predicted Lincoln and
Prebbleton’s joint population
will increase 75 per cent by
2028, from 9700 (2015 figure) to
17,000.

on annual and long-term

exciting, but also quite funny
to us, because when we were
making it we were just trying

are happy with
their progress, she

The group will
continue promoting

straws.

“The business is
supposed to wrap
up in November
but we’ve been
talking about
keeping it going
even after that.
“We’ve all really enjoyed
the process and are passionate
about it, so it’s something we are
thinking about.”

confirm a presence of pests.
This follows the discovery by
Lincoln High School students of
rats in Mahoe Reserve last year.
Lincoln Envirotown Trust has
received $2500 from the district
council to launch the initiative.
The money is being invested
into the purchase of the tracking
tunnels, tracking cards, chew
cards, tracking ink and rodent
lures, as well as 30 new DOC 200
trap boxes.
They are being built by Men’s
Shed of Lincoln, which has
previously built successful trap
boxes for Waihora Ellesmere
Trust and Lincoln Golf Club.

manager Dave Fitzjohn said it is
important to monitor where the
pests are so they know where to
lay the trap boxes.
Mr Fitzjohn hopes to see trap
boxes installed in Lincoln Wetland
soon.

big look at what’s out there, and
if traps are required, by the end

LET member Lindsay Barker,
who is actively involved in the
project, emphasised the importance
of culling pests.
“Mice, rats, hedgehogs and
domestic cats can all be a risk to
birdlife,” he said.
“Hopefully, as people become
more aware of the Predator Free
2050 initiative, more people will
become involved.”
Launched in 2016, Predator
Free 2050 is a Government
initiative aimed at eradicating
New Zealand pest life by the
middle of the century.

THE ARTHUR’S Pass Wildlife
Trust is gearing up for an
increase in pest numbers due to
a mega-mast this season.
A mast season occurs when
trees and plants produce high
amounts of seed and
fruits that attract predators.
Arthur’s Pass Wildlife
trustee Pete Neal said
they have recently seen
increased mice activity.
“We’re more concerned
about what comes after.
Mice are like a prewarning
and then the
stoats and rats come and that’s
what causes all the devastation
to the wildlife,” he said.
Mr Neal said the trust is
now preparing for when the
bigger predators show up to
start a more extensive trapping
programme.
“It’s one of the major things
we do out here because we have
so many native species.”
“We’re really hoping for
another good amount of snow
because the cold weather can
kill them off,” he said.
Department of Conservation
ranger Sian Reynolds said they
have been monitoring mice
numbers in Arthur’s Pass and
there has been an increase since
autumn.
“This year’s mast is the
biggest for many years
and the abundant seed
is fuelling rodent breeding
through the winter,
which in turn will feed
stoats and increase the
number of stoat kits
born this spring,” she
said.
“The trapping work by the
Arthur’s Pass Wildlife Trust is
hugely important to protect the
populations of whio/blue duck
and great spotted kiwi/roroa
around Arthur’s Pass village.”
Mrs Reynolds said DOC
is planning an aerial 1080
predator control operation in
parts of Arthur’s Pass National
Park later this year to knock
down the expected rats and
stoats.

THE ROLLESTON Toy Library
is one step closer thanks to a
donation from a local business.
Library publicity and
promotions officer Michelle Sim
said after more than a year of
struggling to secure premises to
operate out of, it has received a
lifeline.
“Chris and Ayyam (O’Brien)
from Storage King have offered
us one of their 6m x 3m storage
units to use for free for two
years,” she said.
The library is also set to go
online. “Members will be able
to browse the toy collection and
submit orders via a website. Toys
will be housed in the storage
unit and orders will be delivered
weekly to a central collection
point in Rolleston.”
It is a significant step for the
library committee, which has
been working on the project for
more than 15 months, Mrs Sim
said.
“It’s the single biggest
breakthrough we’ve had yet.
It has been hard to keep the
faith at times, but we’ve always
remained positive that we’ll see
some results sooner or later. We
are enormously grateful to Chris
and Ayyam.”
Mrs Sim said there is still a
significant amount of work to do
before the online toy library can
open.

world hip-hop dance stage

Chloe Wright finished 10th
at the World Hip Hop Dance
Championship in the United
States last week.
It was the year 11 student’s
first time dancing in the US. She
competed in Phoenix, Arizona,
with her crew of two called Team
Cozy.
“I feel very excited and proud.
After all the hard work and hours
we put into training. It was a
great feeling,” Chloe, 15, said.
“It’s an extremely hard
competition. We didn’t really

know where we were going to
place as we were going up against
45 of the best ‘mini crews’ from
around the world. So to be 10th
in the world feels like a huge
achievement.”

A holiday of sweating
in heat and stressing over illness
IT IS HOT here. Swimming in
sweat and trapped inside in the
heat. But that’s to be expected
from an Italian summer.
We are in Laura’s home town
of Pravisdomini, a rural village
about an hour north of Venice,
staying in the apartment where
Laura’s mum used to live.
So far we’ve only managed to
catch up with a few people and
get out a handful of times due
to the constant heat and poor
Vittoria only just getting over
being sick from the week before
last.
You might remember from last
week that poor wee Vittoria had
not only been on antibiotics but
had vomited in Dubai airport on
our way over.
For the whole of last week she
was off her food (which is a quite
a big deal considering we’re in
Italy) and would vomit at least
once a day. Normally after slowly
having a munch on some cheese
or grapes, some of the only
things she would eat.
Then on Wednesday she came
out in a nasty looking red rash
which was all over her body
by Thursday. With the recent
outbreak of measles at home in
mind, we were worried that it

in to see the local doctor (who
even wore a white coat) who sent
us to the paediatric ward of the
nearby San Vito hospital.
We were obviously stretched
pretty thin emotionally at
this stage after spending days
stressing about Vittoria and not
sleeping well.
Bubs on the other hand
had managed to have a ball in
between vomits since discovering
a love of the tarantella (a type
of music from Southern Italy)
through the magic of a small
singing hamster toy. Weird
right? I mean, we’re not even in
Southern Italy and I still hear
Che La Luna about a million
times a day.
Thankfully said hospital was
incredibly quiet and we were
seen almost as soon as we walked
in. After a thorough check we
were told that it was likely down
to be a reaction to the antibiotics.
Nothing to worry about and
it would clear up on its own in a
couple of days. The cherry on top
was that it didn’t cost as much as
I feared. Less than 60 Euro isn’t
too bad seeing as we’re foreign.
With absolute relief awash
through our systems we went out
to eat on Saturday night with
my sister-in-law Christine, her
partner Fabrizio, my nephew
William, his partner Sara and
their daughter Grace (who’s
around the same age as Vittoria).
The village was celebrating La
Festa del Gran Perdon, a religious
festival which takes place every
five years. Over the weekend
there was music, theatre, games
and a massive barbecue by the
church, a beautiful 600-year-old
edifice that nobody here thinks is
as amazing as I do.
Although it was still hot
enough to fuse your shirt to your
skin it was great to finally get out
and spend some time with family
and see Vittoria finally taste
(literally and figuratively) a little
of her mum’s culture as well.

Icehouse will wind the clock back

FEW BANDS can boast opening
for David Bowie just six years
after forming.
But for front man Iva Davies
and his band Icehouse, this is
exactly what happened.
The award-winning Australian
rock outfit will bring their hitfilled
set to Selwyn Sounds on
March 7 next year.
Icehouse’s line-up has changed
many times since forming as
Flowers more than 40 years ago.
Davies has been there since the
beginning.
He said years of on-stage
experience and songwriting
would be encapsulated in
the band’s Selwyn Sounds
performance.
“I’ve been working with some
of these guys for 35 years and
they are absolutely the most brilliant
set of musicians that Australia
has to offer, I’m completely
confident in saying that.”
Davies said the band was very
selective with where they played
these days, but they wanted to
play Selwyn Sounds because
New Zealand audiences had
always been some of their biggest
supporters.
“The kind of relationship that
we have with New Zealand is
quite a special one because in the
80s when we were in full swing,
we noted even then per head of
population we actually had more
success in New Zealand than
anywhere else in the world.”
But, it is fair to say Icehouse’s
music has been heard and appreciated
by audiences all over
the world.
Davies said the turnaround
from being a band of 20-something
year olds $18,000 in debt to
their management, to achieving
international success had not
been easy.
“It was just ridiculously hard
work.

“The first album [Icehouse
when the band was still called
Flowers] was a massive success
in Australia, it was the highestselling
debut album by any Australian
band at that point . . . I
remember when that first royalty
cheque turned up. At that point
I actually had no home, I was
kind of couch surfing and under
duress living in my parents home
which I hated doing.
“When that first album came
out it was a big success and of
course, we were able to pay off
that debt and end up finally
earning some money.”
Davies said he didn’t believe
the money would keep rolling
in and certainly not that three
years later Icehouse would have
to choose between touring with
David Bowie or Peter Gabriel.
They decided to support Bowie
on his 1983 Serious Moonlight
European tour.
“The sheer scale of it was just
beyond comprehension when
you’re playing to 70,000 people
every show that you do . . . I
remember pulling into one big
outdoor show and there were
about 10 coaches, 10 buses . . . my
kind of head exploded because I
couldn’t conceive 10 buses full of
crew working on a single show.”
Davies said the Selwyn Sounds
crowd could expect Icehouse to
wind back the clock and put on
a performance with just as much
energy as they brought all those
years ago.

Team effort required to regain shield

IF ELLESMERE want to regain
the Southbridge Shield from
North Canterbury on Saturday,
they will have to try to stop
North Canterbury’s Brook
Retallick.
Last year it was the North
Canterbury’s No 10, Retallick,
who scored 21 points in his
team’s victory 36-29 win at
Prebbleton.
Ellesmere team manager, Michael
Sheat said while they were
well aware of Retallick’s talents,
they would need a team effort to
regain the Southbridge Shield.
“That’ll be a good match-up
between (Retallick) and (Shannon)
Donald but we know that if
we concentrate too much on one
player, that there are others who
can cause us problems.”
Ellesmere’s lead-up suffered a
blow when they were beaten 38-
15 by a strong Canterbury Maori
Waitaha team at Kirwee.
However, North Canterbury,
who also lost to Canterbury
Maori Waitaha a fortnight ago,
also tasted defeat on the weekend
to the Cantabrians 35-13.
Ellesmere beat the Cantabrians
15-0 in soggy conditions a
fortnight ago.
Sheat said Ellesmere stuck
to the task well against “a very
physical” Canterbury Maori
Waitaha forward pack.
“We did pretty well defensively,”
he said.
“We just missed some oneon-one

Like portals to paradise, Kirsty Nixon’s large-scale paintings invite the viewer to
pull back the ‘fringes’ of our native flora to reveal quintessentially New Zealand
landscapes hidden in behind. Framed by the structural forms of our native
foliage, like cabbage tree leaves or nectar-laden flax flowers, and almost always
with a native bird or two in attendance, unfolding before your eyes could be
an endless coastline, a deep, green cove or perhaps even a glimpse of the far
horizon.
Kirsty is repeatedly drawn to the New Zealand landscape
in its various guises and while on holiday at the bird
sanctuary island Tiritiri Matangi recently she experienced
a sense of utter peace while watching the bellbirds
flitting about the feeders and hearing their hypnotic song.
Returning home, she became keenly aware of the absence
of native birdsong and thus her new works pay tribute to
the ways in which the melodic voices of our native birds
have the ability to enrich our lives as we navigate daily life.
Based in Auckland, Kirsty has been painting full-time
since 1997, initially in the medium of watercolour but
now having found her home in the freedom and impact of
acrylic.

THE ELLESMERE colts had a
strong final hit-out before they
meet their North Canterbury
counterparts on Saturday.
They took down the Canterbury
Maori colts 24-10 over the
weekend, thanks to a strong
first half in which they adapted
quickly to the wet conditions at
Kirwee.
Team manager Dave Beatty
said the squad are eager to avenge
the loss to North Canterbury
last year and their performance
on Saturday means they are
travelling in the right direction.
Ellesmere raced out to a 17-0
half-time lead on the back of a
dominant scrum and lineout.
“We got a couple of tries from
(the scrum) so the tactic worked. I
felt we buttoned-off in the second
and let them score a couple of
tries, but credit to them, they
fought back well,” Beatty said.
“The track at Kirwee held up
well, despite the rain, and we
were able to play the up-tempo
style of game that we wanted. We
were turning down shots at goal
to take attacking scrums and we
were pushing them backwards
regularly.”

Darfield set for surprise
return to top division

DARFIELD PRESIDENT Dave Beatty
was shocked to find out his team have
been reinstated to the Canterbury
Country premier cricket competition.
The decision to include them was made
last week after Kaiapoi were forced to
withdraw from the competition – which
starts in October – due to
a lack of numbers
Darfield finished at the
bottom of the table last
year and were relegated
from the eight-team
premier grade. They
unsuccessfully tried to
overturn their demotion

But after Kaiapoi’s
annual meeting on August 12, the club
told the Canterbury Country Cricket
Association it would not be in a position
to enter a premier team in the 2019/20
season.
“I was quite shocked to get the news
that we were back,” Beatty said. “After we
missed out trying to make it a nine-team
competition in June, I’d pretty much got
over it.”
Darfield reformed last season after a
seven-year absence.
Beatty said while he accepted the
promotion/relegation rules, he felt his
team were unlucky to end up the cellardwellers
of the competition.
“We had four or five rained out games
and a couple of tight losses, so it was not
an ideal situation. We only lost one guy
from last season because he went on his
OE, but the rest of us were prepared to

go down and try to get us back to the top
grade.
“After Christmas, we’ll have New
Zealand age-group rep Jesse Frew

play first XI cricket in town.”
Beatty said the club’s close relationship
with Kirwee, Sheffield, Malvern and
Greendale means there is now a pathway
into premier cricket for players from those
areas.
Lincoln have earned promotion to the
premier grade after they won the secondtier
senior competition.
There will now be four Ellesmere
teams – Darfield, Lincoln, Weedons and
Leeston-Southbridge – in the premier
competition when the season starts
on October 5. Cheviot, Southbrook,
Sefton and Oxford will also play in the
competition.

Selwyn Awards, a great way
to benchmark
success
Continuing our series profiling the Selwyn Awards 2018 winners. Eurofins won the Large
Business Award.
For Rolleston company Eurofins, winning at the Selwyn Awards was a signal of success for staff
and customers.
Eurofins, based in Izone, provide laboratory-based food, water and land testing services to
businesses across the Selwyn district.
It is part of a global network of over 800 laboratories spread over 47 countries. Peter McLaughlin,
Account Manager for Eurofins Rolleston, speaks passionately about their business successes and
what winning the Large Business Award at the 2018 Selwyn Awards meant to the Selwyn branch
of the international business and their 30 staff.
“We thought we provided pretty good customer service already and winning not only reinforced that
we were in fact doing well, but it also helped our reputation and built trust from local customers.”
They heard about the Selwyn Awards when Mayor Sam Broughton suggested they enter during a
tour of their facilities in 2018.
Eurofins has been going from strength to strength, but they need to continue to grow so entering
into, and winning, the Large Business category was a great way to benchmark their success Mr
McLaughlin says.
“We had never entered any awards before, but it was so easy. From a management perspective,
the application process was great as it prompts you to think about all the facets of the business
and whether you are truly achieving them to the best of your ability. Of course, when we heard the
announcement at the Gala Dinner that we had won we were thrilled!”
The Gala Dinner was a fun celebration, he says.
“It was a great way to show our staff how their involvement contributed to the success of Eurofins
and to thank them for that. The evening was wonderful, there were so many different businesses
and Selwyn residents there, the local entertainment was wonderful and the MC was hilarious.”
After going through the application process, attending the Gala Dinner and, of course winning
the Large Business category, Mr McLaughlin says he would highly recommend other Selwyn
businesses enter the 2020 Selwyn Awards.
One-stop farm waste recycling day coming
to Selwyn
Farmers in Ellesmere and surrounds will have the chance to take part in a new pilot farm waste
recycling event providing a one-stop-shop to dispose of farm plastics, chemicals and oil.
The pilot Agrecovery programme will be in Ellesmere on Monday 9 September. During the day farmers
and growers who have preregistered will be able to drop off chemical containers, silage and bale wrap,
fertiliser and feedbags, waste oil and unwanted chemicals for recycling, or safe disposal. To take part in
the day people must register at agrecovery.co.nz, book a time and indicate the type of wastes they will
be bringing. The location will be provided to registered attendees.
The Council is partnering with Agrecovery for the day. Given our large rural sector, we jumped at the
chance to offer the Selwyn district as one of six places nationwide to get the programme first, Council
Solid Waste manager Andrew Boyd says.
“Council is committed to working with the rural community to help find sustainable options for
disposing of farm waste. The Agrecovery One-Stop-Shop rural waste recycling events provide a great
opportunity for the community to dispose of waste safely, especially in more remote rural communities.
We encourage people to get behind these events and register.”
Agrecovery held two similar trial events in 2018 in Geraldine and Matamata and collected nearly 20
tonnes of rural waste. Geraldine Farm Manager Aaron Gorrie participated in the 2018 event and says it
was a positive day that he hoped others would take advantage of.
“Like most farmers we are committed to sustainable farming. It’s important to leave a legacy for future
generations. We have a Farm Environment Plan in place, and we work hard to ensure we meet the
requirements of the plan. This is a great opportunity to have unwanted chemicals correctly disposed of.”
Welcome to the family at
citizenship ceremony
There was a family atmosphere as new New Zealanders were
welcomed at Selwyn’s latest monthly citizenship ceremony.
The 19 new citizens from 10 different countries received their
citizenship in the ceremony at Tai Tapu Community Centre.
The West Rolleston Primary School Choir opened the evening with
renditions of Crowded House’s ‘Don’t Dream it’s Over’ and the new
Selwyn district waiata and later led the group in the national anthem
Many of the new citizens came as family groups with
grandparents, parents and soon-to-be parents among the mix.
For Dorothy Chilwalo, originally from Zambia, it was a proud
moment to become a New Zealander together with her children
Angela Yendama – a youth worker, newly graduated from the
University of Canterbury – and Chinjila Lunda, a year 13 student.
“I could have taken it a long time ago, but I was waiting for these guys
to grow up and make their own decisions to become New Zealanders.”
After moving from Scotland in 2007 with her two young children
to escape the cold and on the recommendation of friends, the
registered nurse says she fell in love with New Zealand.
“Its home. We loved the place, we loved the people, the culture.”
For Australian Richard Fowler encouragement from his wife helped
with the decision that it was time, after 50 years of ‘enjoying the
fabulous opportunities this country offers,’ to officially become a
New Zealander, while for British couple Peter and Alison Cain it
was a desire to join their young Kiwi born daughter as citizens of
her homeland.
Bidhan Chapagai from Bhutan, who moved to New Zealand four
years ago, received rousing applause when he told the room it was
“a true honour and a privilege to be a New Zealand citizen.”

refreshed Selwyn Directory.
The Council has unveiled an updated Selwyn Directory—a searchable
online directory of businesses in the district. The directory is now
open for registrations or updated details.
It offers businesses the chance to advertise their details including
a map location, contacts, website and social media links and a
summary of their business.
The directory is part of Council’s work to support local businesses
and encourage people to think local when looking for goods and
services, Community Services and Facilities group manager Denise
Kidd says.
As well as providing a free opportunity to promote to customers in
the district to customers the directory will help business to business
links, she says.
“The directory is a great tool for finding local resources to assist your
business. As a smaller district we know businesses are strengthened
by looking at where they can complement each other and by
working together and the directory’s a good way to connect.”

Waste management bylaw
The Council is consulting on proposed changes to the Waste
Management and Minimisation Bylaw 2012.
It’s the Council’s role to manage waste and to help protect the natural
environment. The bylaw forms an integral part of the management of
waste in the district and is referred to in a number of documents, as
well as referenced on kerbside and public litter bin labels.
The key changes proposed in this review relate to kerbside collections
times, waste management plans for commercial or industrial resource
and building consents, as well as events.
This draft Waste Management and Minimisation Bylaw 2019 will, upon
adoption, replace the Waste Management and Minimisation Bylaw 2012.

Facing the
future of food
Embracing innovative food systems is the future for our agri-based economy.
The world of food is changing rapidly. The
planet is under pressure, with consumers
demanding more ethically-produced,
affordable foods than ever before.
Lincoln University researchers are
responding to this by bringing together
expertise from science, commerce and
economics to create a more consumerfocused
approach to agricultural
production.
A Lincoln University Centre of
Excellence, Food for Future Consumers,
has been established to focus on the links
between provenance (including place
of origin, authenticity, land, and agroecosystems)
and food qualities (such
as production values, composition and
preferences).
Head of the Centre Dr Roland Harrison
says New Zealand must embrace a
paradigm shift from a production-driven
to a market-driven agri-food sector.
“Adapting to a future where market
signals are acknowledged and interpreted
requires initiatives that facilitate a wholeof-chain
industry response.
“The benefit to producers will be the
potential to capture a greater proportion of
the value embedded in their products. The
benefit for consumers will be foods that
meet individual standards and expectations,
whether these be about nutrition and
health, authenticity or sustainability.”
Dr Harrison says a considerable challenge
lies in consumers’ increasing demand for
ethically-produced yet affordable foods,
while production systems are under
pressure to improve their environmental
performance.
“The Centre of Excellence takes an
interdisciplinary approach, combining
Lincoln’s expertise in fundamental and
applied sciences with its ability to offer
in-depth consumer and business insights.
The idea is to meet consumer requests for
authentic, sustainably-produced, highquality
products from both traditional and
non-traditional production systems.
“Embracing innovative food systems is
the future for our agri-based economy. We
intend to use the specialised knowledge
within the Centre of Excellence to
generate new knowledge and convert that
into applied solutions for the agri-food
industry,” says Dr Harrison.
“Consumers want to know more about
where their food has come from and how
it is made. They want to know the story
behind the food they choose.
“However, different consumers will make
different choices, selecting from a variety
of different offerings that appeal to their
taste and price points. It is in the agri-food
industry’s interests to service that need in
an ethical and sustainable way.
“Our research will also address these
aspects including the development of
new business models that can preserve
and capture the value associated with

provenance through the value chain.”
Lincoln University researchers will
partner with other organisations working
in the agri-food domain to focus on a range
of research themes.
These include characterising how
production practices affect food
composition, researching cognitive and
sensory aspects of food consumption,
and expanding consumer choices through
business and product innovation.
Researchers will also explore new
technologies that can protect provenance
and provide traceability.
The Food for Future Consumers
initiative is part of a suite of Centres of
Excellence that Lincoln University will
develop over the next three years to address
grand challenges in agriculture, food,
conservation, the environment, recreation
and Mātauranga Maori.

10 Tips to a dust and pollen-free home
• Vacuum regularly: Vacuum 1-2 times a
week to keep your house dust mite, pet
hair and dander free.
• Brush your pets outside: If you regularly
brush your pets, do it outdoors away from
open windows and doors.
• Wash your bedding: Wash your sheets
weekly and dry them in the dryer when
pollen is at its worst.
• Regularly clean furnishings: Choose easy to
wash fabrics for drapes, curtains, cushion
and sofa covers to help keep allergens at
bay.
• Hard flooring vs carpet: Choose flooring
such as vinyl or timber, which are easier to
wash and keep clean.
• Keep pollen and dust outside: Shut
windows and doors on windy days.
• Remove your outdoor clothing: Change
your gardening or walking clothes when
you come inside to avoid bringing pollen
into your home and onto your furnishings.
• Stay indoors: Choose your time to spend
outdoors. Most pollen is emitted between
5am and 10am; however, pollen counts do
vary throughout the day.
• In the garden: Regularly remove dead
plants and leaves; stay away from, or wear
a mask, when lawn mowing.
• In the car: Keep windows closed and set
the air conditioning on recirculate to keep
pollen-laden air out.

Federated Farmers committed
to reducing greenhouse gases
The Action on Agricultural Emissions
discussion paper is a positive first step as
farmers and the Government hammer
out a practical path to reduce livestock
greenhouse gas emissions, Federated
Farmers says.
“We are agreed that a priority is to find a
workable and affordable way that farmers
can measure emissions and sinks at the
farm level and to adopt practices and any
new technologies that will help drive down
methane and nitrous oxide emissions,”
Federated Farmers climate change
spokesman Andrew Hoggard says.
“Where we differ is that the Government
keeps emphasising pricing as the
predominant tool. Federated Farmers does
not agree with universal pricing of methane.
The Emissions Trading Scheme has failed
to reduce carbon dioxide emissions from
transport – in fact, transport emissions
have nearly doubled since 1990. Universal
pricing of methane will be similarly
unsuccessful.”
What Federated Farmers has committed
to is working with the Government to
design a pricing mechanism where any
price is part of a broader framework to
support on-farm practice change. Such
pricing would be set at the margin, that
is, only applying to methane emissions
over the 0.3% per annum reductions that
science says is enough to ensure methane
no longer adds to global warming.
New Zealand farmers are proud to be
among the most efficient producers in
world and, unlike many of their overseas
competitors, essentially stand on their own
two feet as their animals stand on their
own four feet. Farmers here are largely
unsubsidised by consumers (by way of
inflated prices) or taxpayers and that has
been the case for over 30 years, Hoggard
says.
If New Zealand’s milk and meat export
volumes reduce as a result of lower onfarm
production, the gap will be filled by
less efficient producers. This is known as
“emissions leakage” and will ultimately
increase global emissions and food costs.
“So any pricing should only be a tool
to incentivise farmers into taking up
economically viable opportunities to cut
methane, just as the Government might use
incentives or a nudge to encourage people
to switch to an electric vehicle.
“Unlike a fossil-fuel powered vehicle,
there is no ‘electric sheep’ equivalent for
farmers. But there is the potential for
methane inhibitors or a vaccine, albeit
some years away from proof and coming to
market,” Hoggard says.
Breeding low-emission animals and
selecting low-emission feeds are options
being explored in the meantime. The
agriculture sector has committed to work
with the Government and iwi/Maori to
design a practical and cost-effective system
for reducing emissions at farm level –
including a pricing mechanism as part of
the broad framework – by 2025.
Meanwhile, the sector’s proposed 5-year
programme of action is aimed at ensuring
farmers and growers are equipped with the
knowledge and tools they need to deliver
emissions reductions while maintaining
profitability.

Spring cleaning
the non-toxic way
Spring cleaning can be a chore but is also an opportunity to look at introducing
non-toxic cleaning products into your home that can be made from scratch, cost
less and reduce waste and the amount of household chemicals.
To start there are several key ingredients,
for example, baking soda with its proven
virus-killing abilities that also effectively
cleans, deodorises, brightens and cuts
through grease and grime.
Castile soap is completely made from
plant oils with no chemical detergents
or animal products is basic and also cuts
through grease and grime.
Essential oils have naturally occurring
plant compounds to add scent to your
cleaning products particularly if you don’t
like the smell of vinegar.
Natural lemon juice annihilates mildew
and mould, cuts through grease and shines
hard surfaces – and also smells great.
And olive oil is not only good for you but
cooking oil also works as a cleaner and
polisher.
Thanks to its acidity, vinegar is nothing
short of a cleaning miracle and effectively
eliminates soap scum, grease and grime.
Combinations of these ingredients in a
spray bottle can create a range of non-toxic
cleaners for every part of your home and
can often be used in multiple places.
For a heavy-duty toilet scrub that cleans
and deodorises, pour ½ cup of baking soda
and about 10 drops of tea tree essential oil
into the toilet. Add ¼ cup of vinegar to the
bowl and scrub away while the mixture
fizzes.
To get rid of mildew in a shower, spray
pure white vinegar on the area, let it sit
for at least 30 minutes and then rinse with
warm water.
A homemade disinfectant can be made
with two cups of water, three tablespoons
of liquid soap, and 20-30 drops of tea tree
oil.
As an option for bleach, mix ½ cup
baking soda, 1 teaspoon castile soap, and ½
teaspoon hydrogen peroxide. Use a cloth to
apply the mixture to a wet surface, scrub,
and then rinse thoroughly.

Getting protein through a science-based diet

These recipes provide a
science-based approach to
ensuring you get enough in
your diet
Orange kumara and
haloumi fritters
Serves 4
Ingredients
1.2kg orange kumara, peeled and
coarsely grated
320g haloumi, coarsely grated
2 tsp ground cumin
Light olive oil spray for cooking
2 cloves garlic, crushed
4 spring onions, white part thinly
sliced into rounds, green part
thinly sliced diagonally
120g baby spinach leaves
Avocado dressing:
80g medium-sized avocado
⅓ cup (80ml) white wine vinegar
or apple cider vinegar
½ tsp dijon mustard
Directions
To make the avocado dressing,
blend all the ingredients in a jug
with a hand-held blender until

smooth. Season with black pepper
and set aside.
Heat a large non-stick frying
pan over low-medium heat.
Combine the kumara, haloumi
and cumin in a bowl and season
with freshly ground black pepper.
Lightly spray the pan with
olive oil and drop in firmly
packed cup measures of the
kumara mixture, pressing down
to form 8cm circles. Depending
on the size of your pan, you will
probably need to do this in two
batches of four.
Cook for 5min each side
or until golden and cooked
through. Remove and cover to
keep warm. Lightly spray the pan
with a little more oil and increase
the heat to high.
Add the garlic, white part
of the spring onion, spinach
and 60ml water. Cook, tossing
constantly, for 2min or until the
spinach has just wilted. Remove
the pan from the heat and season
with black pepper.
Serve two kumara fritters per
person, layered with the spinach
mixture. Spoon over the dressing
and sprinkle with the green
spring onion.
Roast herb chicken and
vegetables
Serves 4 with leftovers
Ingredients
½ cup finely chopped flat-leaf
parsley
2 Tbsp finely chopped rosemary
1 Tbsp mixed dried herbs
6 cloves garlic, crushed
¼ cup (60ml) olive oil
¼ cup (60ml) red wine vinegar
1.8kg lean chicken tenderloins
1 head cauliflower, cut into florets
7 carrots, sliced into rounds
7 zucchini, thickly sliced into
rounds
750g button mushrooms
Light olive oil spray for cooking
1 cup (250ml) salt-reduced
chicken stock
Lemon wedges and flat-leaf parsley
leaves, to serve
Ingredients
Heat the oven to 200 deg C (or
180 deg C fan-forced).
Combine the parsley, rosemary,
dried herbs, garlic, olive
oil, vinegar and chicken in a
large bowl. Season generously
with freshly ground black pepper
and toss well to coat the chicken.
Divide the vegetables among
two large roasting tins and
lightly spray with olive oil. Toss
to combine, then top evenly with
the chicken mixture.
Pour half the stock over the
ingredients in each tin. Bake,
swapping the tins halfway
through and tossing the chicken
and vegetables, for 25-30min
or until the chicken is cooked
through and the vegetables are
soft.
Divide one-third of the chicken
and vegetables among four for
dinner, with lemon wedges and
parsley. Cool the leftovers, then
divide evenly between two large
airtight containers.
Store the leftovers in the fridge
for up to two days or in the
freezer for three months. Thaw
the frozen mixture in the fridge
overnight. Transfer the chilled
mixture to a baking dish and
reheat in a preheated 220 deg C
(200 deg C fan-forced) oven for
15-20min or until hot and crisp.
Magnificent magnolias need protection
LATE WINTER is the season
when the deciduous magnolias
are at their best.
August seems to force these
gorgeous flowers to open in a
rush.
The breathtaking sight of the
large, tulip-like blooms perching
on bare branches can send
passers-by rushing to the nursery
to buy something similar.
There are dozens of magnolia
varieties, and making a choice
can be a formidable task.
Most grow into small trees
but, if space is tight, look for
one of the shrub-sized star
magnolias.
Because magnolias come from
cool climates with rich, moistureholding
soil, keeping them
happy through hot New Zealand
summers can be a challenge.
It’s important to take the
opportunity to improve the
soil as much as possible before
planting.
Choose a spot that gets at least
half a day’s sun and is protected
from strong winds. Because
magnolias hate being dry, it
can also be helpful to add some
water-storing crystals into the
planting area.
Create a planting hole that’s
about twice the size of the pot
and approximately the same
depth. Take the plant out of the
pot with care (magnolias hate
root disturbance) and sit it into
the planting hole.
Backfill, then water well to
settle everything into place.
Lastly, spread a layer of organic
mulch. This will keep the soil
moist and stop competitive grass
from growing back over the root
area.

We are a small textile manufacturing factory based in a rural area of
Springston, Christchurch, supplying to the domestic and international
markets. The business is growing and we are looking for an
enthusiastic and motivated Manufacturing Technician to join our team.
The role is diverse and varied. Running the factory efficiently on a daily
basis is essential to ensure production targets are met and orders
are dispatched on time. Accuracy, attention to detail and the ability
to work independently are important requirements for the position.
Ideally applicants will have a background in engineering and an interest
in textile manufacturing. Duties include manufacturing, machine
maintenance, processing/dispatching orders and some computer

West Melton Rifle Range

The general public is to be advised that a NZ Army
Exercise will be conducted in the West Melton Rifle
Range area over the period 30 August to 1 September
2019.
The exercise will involve up to 70 personnel from 2/4
RNZIR, Burnham Military Camp.
Training will involve soldiers firing on the West Melton
ranges, living and functioning in the field carrying
weapons in and around the West Melton Rifle Range
Area from 4pm on 30 August to 3pm on 1 September.
Live rounds and pyrotechnics will be used. The
exercise will also involve the movement of troops and
vehicles by day along Old West Coast Road.
